Reports from the Field Part 3

Hiya, it’s me Jenny Jarzabski (Senior Developer) reporting in from the field! I got to spread some Veskmas cheer by running the playtest demo at Pax Unplugged, and I’m here to tell you all about it! This playtest is an encounter designed to test out some of the basic rules of Starfinder Second Edition. Reading on might spoil the demo’s content, so for those of you planning to attend Owlcon (in February) or Norwescon (in March) where some Starfinder team members might be running this demo, you’ve been warned!

November 2023 Organized Play Monthly Update

I am very sorry to report to you all that Linda Zayas-Palmer’s last day with Paizo was October 20th. Linda has been with Organized Play for more than a decade, from her time as a GM to being hired at Paizo and eventually leading development. She's launched two separate Organized Play programs, which is a feat few can match. We will miss her terribly, and I will miss her especially as a partner in crime (metaphorically, of course; we never did any crimes that you can prove). If you are so inclined, please leave a nice message for her in the comments below!

May 2021 Organized Play Update

When Paizo hired me, there were a lot of hazards that I expected to come with the job. Traveling a lot? Hasn’t been an issue yet, but I’m prepared for that. Spending more on dice? That’s alright, I don’t have to buy rulebooks anymore, surely that’ll be an even trade (it’s not, but don’t tell my budget). Increased stress from dealing with the public? I worked retail, I’ll be alright. The thing I didn’t anticipate, however, was that my job would become impossible to describe to people.

Organized Play Scenario Prices

Beginning January 4, 2021, prices for all Pathfinder Society (second edition) and Starfinder Society scenarios, as well as the Pathfinder Bounties, will increase due to rising production costs. High-level scenarios (level range 7-10 and higher) received an additional increase due to the extra time and attention needed from authors/developers related to added complexity of play at higher levels. To help our community with budgeting costs, we plan to produce no more than one high-level scenario per month across both Pathfinder and Starfinder Society lines.

Organized Play Monthly Update

In many ways, I’m relieved to see the home stretch of 2020 and that the new year lies just beyond the horizon. With Covid, murder hornets, wildfires, protests, elections, and beloved icons passing, this year packed more into it than I’d expect in a decade. I felt the lack of conventions the most. You, our community, mean the world to me and it physically hurt not to get to meet up with you and get to chat about gaming, organized play, and maybe even our favorite television shows (though I have a great store of talking points now!). As vaccine availability allows us to reopen, I urge everyone to not rush back into games spaces, but to do so responsibility in an effort to keep our communities safe! We will be back together again soon, but only by being careful can we all be together again.

Giving Thanks to Our Community

Today is Thanksgiving in the United States, and several other countries celebrated their day of giving thanks over the past months. While celebrations look very different for all of us this year, we wanted to take a moment to give thanks to our Paizo community. Without you all, the worlds of Pathfinder and Starfinder would be just stories we told ourselves. We’re grateful for all your support, and wish you well as this year comes to a close. We also want to thank the Organized Play community organizers for supporting our programs in the face of tremendous adversity. Without the venture-officers, we would lack structure and without GMs, games. To all of you who spend time planning schedules and completing tasks behind the scenes, a huge shout out of thanks!

August Update— Release Schedule, Sanctioning, Spotlights and Conventions!

Wow. Eleven weeks. That is how long it's been since we decided to move PaizoCon online. In those eleven weeks, we’ve organized three major online conventions with over 2,700 games. Huge thank yous to all the GMs, HQ, and organizing committee volunteers who jumped in to help us bring the program online. While we aren’t finished with our online events (Virtually Expo and PAX Online are coming up soon), there is a bit of breathing room for us to evaluate our methodologies and streamline some best practices. The reality is that we aren’t going to have large in person gatherings for the rest of 2020 and potentially into 2021, so we want to establish workable methods to keep our organized play programs functioning in our new existence.

With two online conventions under our belt, we’ve got our processes down. That being said, there are still several more in the pipeline – Virtually Expo (to replace UK Games Expo) and Gen Con being the next on the horizon. Besides conventions, we have lots more going on in the OP realm, so I’m going to end my musings with a huge thank you to all our GMs and volunteers organizing games. As the world starts to resume in-person gatherings, I’ll note each community will decide when and how to approach in person gaming and request that all our players work with their organizers to take suggested precautions and keep our community safe, healthy, and happy.

June Update— AcP, Stars, Spotlights and Conventions!

Sighing, Janira puts her quill down, reaching for the cup of tea sitting next to her on the desk. Cautiously she takes a sip, testing the temperature before settling back into her seat and finishing the cup. “Well, that’s done,” she murmurs at the papers before her, before glancing at the stack sitting neatly on the back corner of the desk. She sets the empty cup back on its saucer, then picks up her quill and retrieves the top paper from the stack. “Once more into the breach, old friend. Let’s get this wrapped quickly, so that we can go see how the newest initiates fared on the obstacle course. I bet Marcos the newest Envoy’s would get through fastest and I want to see if I won.”

I’ve reviewed resumes for the new Organized Play Associate position, posted a blog with Pathfinder Society (second edition) sanctioning, and made progress on onboarding our venture-officer volunteers from the Organized Play Foundation. There are other tasks, that we aren’t quite ready to reveal, that got crossed off the to-do list. While not over the hill, we made progress up the slope.

Do you want to GM at a con?

With all the snow falling around the office, I thought a bit of Frozen humor appropriate. Since I ran away from the snowmageddon to the warmer climes of Virginia, I’d ask our community to send good vibes back to the Paizonians braving the wrath of Baba Yaga to keep operations and books moving forward.

May Update—Spotlights and Conventions!

My calendar reminders say 18 days to PaizoCon, 24 days to UK Games Expo, 36 days to Origins, and 85 days to Gen Con. The team is neck deep in preparations as we head towards the finish lines. Who's getting excited? Last week, we posted a blog that had information on our convention special events—PFS #10-98: Siege of Gallowspire, SFS #2-00: Fate of the Scoured God, and PFS(2) #1-00: Origin of the Open Road. March Update—Paizo twitch, Spotlights and Conventions!!

I spent much of February traveling to different conventions and leave again this weekend for a week of GAMA trade show fun! In my absence, organized play lead developer John Compton took to the Paizo twitch channel with Marketing Manager Dan Tharp for a discussion of upcoming bits and bobs about the Paizo organized play programs, with the predominate focus on the remaining storylines of Pathfinder Society Season Ten, the launch of Pathfinder Society Year One, Starfinder Society Season One, and the Adventure Card Guild. Without further ado, John's recap:

Calling for Volunteers!

The Organized Play Foundation (OPF) is putting the final touches on their call for volunteers for Paizo organized play programs. Paizo requested volunteers for Pathfinder Society Roleplaying Guild, Pathfinder Society Adventure Card Guild, Pathfinder Society Academy, Starfinder Society, and Pathfinder Society version 2 at PaizoCon, Origins, Gen Con, UK Games Expo and PAX Unplugged. Registration launches on Friday, January 18, 2019 at 9a.m. EST. To register, visit OPF Convention Volunteer Page and complete questionnaires for the events you wish to attend. Due to how requests are processed by convention organizing committees, you will need to complete a different questionnaire for every event you wish to volunteer for. Registering early on will ensure maximum choice of program and level of volunteerism, though cancellations mean volunteers are often accepted up to the week before the event.

Last Wednesday I was on a plane bound for Washington, D.C. and MAGFest. I returned Monday from one of the highest energy conventions I've attended. This week, I'm catching up on tasks so that I can fly out to SCARAB next week. Come hang out and say hi! Spotlight: Charity Conventions

Over the past year, Society GMs and players opened their hearts (and wallets) in support of other people. While the reasons varied from sick children to cancer research to wounded servicemembers to animal shelters, the generosity of our community didn't waver. Thank you and a huge round of applause to all the organizers on the list for the extra effort it takes to include a charity component in your event. Through the efforts of your labors and the generosity of your players, someone's day brightened.

Lots of travel, but after this I'll only have two shows left in 2018. Around this travel, I'm still focused on catching up on the backlog of tasks and looking forward to convention planning for 2019. Future of Pathfinder Society Update

When we announced the Pathfinder Playtest in February, some of the first questions revolved around what Pathfinder Society would look like in the new edition. One of the questions the organized play team asked was what gave the Society its heart - made it the robust organized play system it is - and what could be improved. We've spent the last six months analyzing the past ten years of Society play, from how we organize scenarios to what role the Society has in the greater Pathfinder universe. We also asked our community feedback, posting several threads soliciting commentary on some of the key pieces of the Society. While we still have months of playtesting to go and aren't ready to make final decisions about what to include in our new Society, we did want to revisit the forum threads where we posed questions to the community, discuss the emerging trends, and refocus the discussion towards the most likely options.

So we've put a wrap on Gen Con 2018 and are already talking about 2019! Once again the Sagamore Ballroom rang to the sound of games, this time in three different systems - Pathfinder, Starfinder, and Pathfinder Playtest. We had a special during each evening slot, accompanied by awesome visual maps put together by Paizonian Andrew White. The presentation for Pathfinder Society Scenario #10-00: The Hao Jin Cataclysm by Mike Kimmel, featured the vocal talents of editor Jason Keely and customer service rep Sam Phelan blended together through the mastery of Ben Loomes of Syrinscape. Solstice Scar Update

At PaizoCon 2017, Pathfinder Society Roleplaying Guild launched a new form of multi-table interactive special (usually shortened to just “a Special”). In doing so, we changed up two big assumptions from past Specials. First, other Specials traditionally kicked off a new season and included integral plot developments that really incentivized playing that Special as soon as possible. Second, those Specials were each built to be self-contained, to portray snapshot events that never evolved, and needed to be built from the ground up each time. As we explored new ways to provide Specials to more conventions—particularly to those taking place between January and May, by which point many people have already played the big Special that debuted at Gen Con the previous year—we developed Pathfinder Society Special #8–99: The Solstice Scar, a modular Special comprised of numerous 90-minute-long parts that can be swapped out over time to tell an evolving story.

As January draws to a close, planning for our big conventions starts in earnest. Volunteer solicitations for PaizoCon and Gen Con went out, but that is the first step in a long list of tasks. Last week, the Organized Play team met and made decisions as to what scenarios/events to offer at each of the big conventions – PaizoCon, Origins, and Gen Con, as well as what special events would be on offer at UKGE and PaizoCon UK. Now we need to get granular and start looking at the daily schedules and numbers of tables.

This weekend, badges for Gen Con went on sale. We sent the message out that our volunteer call would go live on Wednesday. So here it is! With over 300 volunteers and around 1700 tables of organized play games running, Gen Con is easily our largest event. This means even more attention on processes and efficiency. The changes below are the same adjustments we made to PaizoCon and are aimed at bringing all the large conventions into the same logistical umbrella.

PaizoCon Oz 2017, There and Back Again

In October 2017, I travelled to New Zealand to take part in PaizoCon Oz 2017. My first opportunity to attend PaizoCon Oz, the prospect filled me with lots of excitement and a bit of trepidation. I hadn't journeyed to the Pacific in almost ten years. It is a long plane flight, involves crossing the International Date Line, and meant visiting a country I was unfamiliar with outside of movies. But the lure of meeting a large group of hitherto unknown Society members, gauging their interest in our newest organized play program, Starfinder Society, and playing a game in the Green Dragon Inn at Hobbiton outweighed my trepidation and so I made my way across the Pacific Ocean.

In the Pacific Northwest, our weather turned and rain now envelopes our Redmond office in a mist. Falling temperatures, transitioning leaves, and blustering winds replaced the bright sunshine and warm weather. The rough storms of the past weekend left us tossed about and quite a bit of debris and detritus blown about, but all are accounted for. For other Pathfinders, the inclement weather patterns of the past few months test their resiliency and survival skills. While we have heard from Venture-Officers and players on the eastern seaboard of the US, they still face difficulties with flooding and power outages. I spent the past five days in Fort Wayne, Indiana, attending the Winter Fantasy Convention hosted by Baldman Games. What a blast! With a small but dedicated Pathfinder presence, we played lots, laughed lots, and rolled quite a few dice. I enjoyed introducing new players to the Pathfinder Society.

A Little Comic Relief

We have been working hard on the soon-to-launch Season of the Runelords (we're previewing it this weekend at Winter Fantasy in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and it's not too late to get in on that!) and we're trying something a little different this time.

Back to Cherished Haunts

I recently returned from Columbia, South Carolina, where I was a guest at SCARAB, a gaming convention with a very strong Pathfinder Society presence operated by Regional Venture-Coordinator Delbert Collins II. This was my fifth year making the trip, and it's always a really great opportunity to see familiar faces, play a few adventures, and shout my throat raw while GMing. The kill count stayed relatively modest, barring two gentlemen laid low during Pathfinder Society Scenario #7-11: Ancients' Anguish who acknowledged their characters' demise with admirable grace and both came back to life in order to finish what they had started. I also enjoyed my first chance to actually play Pathfinder Society Special #6-98: Serpents Rise, as presented by Venture-Captain Matt Polkowsky.

Yesterday saw my return from the frozen north. It seems I brought some of the white stuff with me as western Washington weather takes a plunge into ice and snow. Makes me want to curl up in front of a fire with a steaming cup of cocoa and a fluffy blanket. Instead, I will grab a mug and chat with you all for a bit.

Pathfinder-by-Post

In my brief stint handling both development and campaign coordination duties, I've had a chance to interact with many of the venture-captains and venture-lieutenants while fulfilling convention support requests. One of the most surprising was for PbP Gameday IV from Jesse Davis, venture-captain of online play (PbP stands for play-by-post, explained more below). To give you a sense of perspective, some of our larger regional conventions over the summer run about 120 sessions of the Pathfinder Society Roleplaying Guild; this request had 149 sessions with 81 GMs—and that wasn't counting any of the ones who already had their scenario PDFs. I was very excited to share the news of how strong the online play community is and the wealth of gaming opportunities available for anyone with an internet connection.

More from the Rusty Dragon

I’m writing this from the floor of PAX Prime, where we’re running thousands of gamers through Pathfinder Roleplaying Game and Adventure Card Game demos here in our home town of Seattle. It’s always a blast to rub shoulders with gamers at this convention, as it has a youthful, joyful buzz that makes it the perfect way to (pretty much) end the summer convention season.

Minnesota Pathfinder Society Gives Back the the Community

At Paizo, we get an overwhelming amount of feedback surrounding the growth of the Pathfinder Society. Many of these are positive reports of our volunteers and Venture Officers building strong gaming groups and communities within their region. And occasionally, we hear back about how these local chapters are turning their passion for gaming and PFS into a platform for giving back to people in need. We were contacted by the Minneapolis/St. Paul lodge recently, and wanted to share with you how they've decided to make a difference through their local convention, Skål Con.

25 New Reasons to Attend a Convention

Every season since the Year of the Ruby Phoenix at Gen Con 2011, the we've released a new set of convention-exclusive boons that Pathfinder Society Roleplaying Guild players can win. The next year I wrote the Season 4 boons as a volunteer, making a few rewards that have reappeared over the years: Expedition Manager (what if a boon let you do real archaeology?), Treasure Map, Missing Mentor (can a standalone boon tell its own story?), and the infamous Xenophobia (what if there was a boon that ate all of your race boons?). I have no doubt that boon writing played an important part in my being hired by Paizo, so you can understand that I have a special fondness for the process.

UK Games Expo has replaced Gen Con as the biggest games convention in the UK. Four massive halls are packed with trade stands, costumed heroes and heroines pace the corridors, famous authors hold forth in seminar rooms, national tournaments are fought out across the tables and separate suites are dedicated to wargames, board games and roleplaying games of all description. Naturally Pathfinder has a whole suite to itself and the cream of the UK's GMs are running the latest Pathfinder Society adventures from Season 6, as well as many old favorites.
