OPC Musings

I’m gonna drop a hot take at the top of this blog: I think PaizoCon was a success this year! Everybody who’d been there before couldn’t help but comment on how different it felt, but as someone with no base of reference, I had a great time. We ran over 100 Organized Play games in the ballroom, including our first hybrid special. I got to hang out with some of my awesome coworkers and meet some fantastic community members, and I spent way too much money in our store!

No, it wasn’t a perfect show. There are things to iron out before Gen Con and things to improve for next year. A non-zero number of people (myself included) tested positive for COVID after the show (I’m doing fine, thanks for asking). Overall, I’m so thrilled with my first physical PaizoCon

I have a ton of things to talk about in this blog—it might be the longest blog I’ve ever written—so strap in, and let’s blast through these updates!

Year of Boundless Wonder

At our PaizoCon panel, Pathfinder Society developer Mike Kimmel announced the title for Year 4: Year of Boundless Wonder! We’re very excited for this new metaplot, featuring a treasure hoard full of wondrous items and treacherous secrets. More information about the year’s stories, as well as any rule changes, will be forthcoming between now and the year’s launch at Gen Con Indy and Gen Con Online. For now, be sure to check out our panel on YouTube and the announcement blog.

Achievement Points Update

I have good news and bad news!

The good news: last week, tech rolled a code update that, among other things, should start every new player with 80 Achievement Points for both Pathfinder and Starfinder Society and retroactively grant those points to current players as well. One of the most consistent complaints about the program at large is that new players can’t play weird characters from the jump. This 80 AcP grant is enough to purchase an uncommon ancestry, some new character options, or just resurrect your character a couple of times after making… interesting choices. We hope that this will ease a new player’s introduction to the system and benefit those of you who have been working diligently to save up for something shiny as well!

The bad news: doing so apparently broke AcP entirely in new and exciting ways. We’ve had reports of some people not seeing the grant yet, and other reports of events not awarding AcP for sessions anymore. Obviously, this is a problem, and tech is actively working on fixing it. Please know that fixing this is my highest priority, and I hope to see the issues resolved soon. Thank you all so much for your patience!

PFS Faction Pins

A couple of months ago on Paizo Live!, I announced that we’d be getting new faction pins in the store for PaizoCon. Unfortunately, thanks to shipping chaos, they missed it by one day and arrived just after the show closed. Luckily, they’re now available in the Paizo store!

Paizo Organized Play
Envoy’s Alliance
Grand Archive
Horizon Hunters
Radiant Oath
Verdant Wheel
Vigilant Seal

The Accessory Perks page has had an update in the works for some time. Now that these pins have arrived, that will hopefully be the motivation I need to put the final touches on the page and get it live so that these pins provide an in-game benefit. Until then, enjoy the bling!

Major Convention Recruitment

PaizoCon Online Europe 2022

We’re currently recruiting GMs for Gen Con Online as well as PaizoCon Online Europe! Earlier today we posted a blog with more information on both, so for the sake of brevity here I will link you over there for more information.

Sanctioning

We released a ton of products, and sanctioning for other products, in May. So many that I don’t have time for fun commentary and I’m just going to list them all out!

Pathfinder Society

Starfinder Society

Upcoming

Next on our sanctioning radar, in no particular order, are:

  • Dark Archive
  • Outlaws of Alkenstar Adventure Path
  • Redshift Rally
  • Pathfinder Lost Omens: Travel Guide

New FAQ Answers

Prior to PaizoCon, we posted a couple of new answers to crafting-related questions on the PFS FAQ page. I will reproduce the text here, but the most current version can always be found on that page.

Can I upgrade permanent items?
Yes, players may upgrade permanent magical items or items made from special materials using the Crafting rules on page 535 of the Core Rulebook. Players may not upgrade adventuring gear or consumable items in this manner.

Can I pay the cost difference to upgrade a permanent item instead of using Craft to do it myself? Yes. The Pathfinder Society has numerous crafters that assist their fellow agents. Use the rules for upgrading magic items on page 535 of the Core Rulebook.

GM Recognition

Campaign Coins

At PaizoCon, we awarded six new Campaign Service Coins. These Coins are given to volunteers who go above and beyond the typical volunteer duties to support their communities and Organized Play. Nominations are always accepted; volunteers may be nominated by emailing organizedplay@paizo.com with their name, region and a description of their service. As we begin to return to physical events, we hope to resume awarding these in-person, so letting us know what upcoming events they’re attending is also useful.

Congratulations to: David Peever, who now holds a Campaign Coin and Organized Play ID #852
Jocelyn Hamilton, who now holds a Campaign Coin and Organized Play ID #853
Preston Hudson, who now holds a Campaign Coin and Organized Play ID #854
Dennis Muldoon, who now holds a Campaign Coin and Organized Play ID #855
Glen Parnell, who now holds a Campaign Coin and Organized Play ID #856
Nicole Heits, who now holds a Campaign Coin and Organized Play ID #857

GM Ranks

Whether stars, novas, or glyphs, achieving a 5 ranking in any program involves a substantial amount of time. To achieve the 5th milestone, a GM must run 150 games, of which at least 50 must be unique scenarios and 10 special scenarios as well as run between one and three games for venture-captains (program dependent). A conservative estimate of the time needed to reach the 5th milestone is 650 hours!

This month, we had one GM earn their 5th Star for PFS1 and one GM earn their 5th Nova for SFS.

5th Star: LeRoy Byrd

5th Nova: Nikolaus Beattie

Congratulations to our new 5-rank GMs, and thank you for your dedication! If you believe you’ve achieved your 5th rank but haven’t been announced, email us at organizedplay@paizo.com.

Upcoming Conventions

In addition to our major shows, convention season is in full swing! We have tons of events around the world scheduled for this summer, and we encourage you to support your local shows! Any convention that has filed for event support can be found on our conventions calendar.

Until next time—Explore! Report! Cooperate! And enjoy the Year of Redemption’s Rise!

I want to echo Alex's sentiments about PaizoCon - it was great getting to be there, and meet so many people in person (especially those that previously were only "virtual" acquaintances). Also seeing the energy in the Org. Play room the whole weekend was motivating, energizing, and rewarding for me personally. I hope that I get to meet even more of the awesome people in our community at GenCon.

Also, congrats to all of the new coin holders, especially one of my partners in crime - David Peever! Welcome all of you to the club, for each and everyone of you has earned your place at the table.

I've had the great pleasure of working directly with David, Jocelyn, Dennis, and Nicole over the past few years. I must say that these campaign coin awards are richly deserved, as are Preston's and Glen's! Congratulations to all of you, and thank you so much for your dedication to our campaigns!

Also, huge congratulations to Nik and LeRoy on 5-Novas/Stars! It takes so many hours of prep-time and running to get to where you both are!

PaizoCon Online was also a great success, and is still ongoing in the form of our Play-by-Post and Play-by-Discord players and GMs! Everyone who was a GM or HQ volunteer on either side of the convention should feel very proud - we put on a great show this year!

And lest it be missed, the work Alex Speidel puts in to make the games we enjoy run smoothly cannot be overstated. Thank you, Alex, for everything you do during "con season" and beyond!

Congrats to everyone involved.

This was my first time to PaizoCon and while its not exactly a pilgrimage, it felt long overdue.

Now to rest up and prepare for gen con.

Any chance that someone can get the page for the Organised Play pin updated? Whilst I'm sure that the image of the back of it is accurate, it's not very helpful. :)

OK, I accept that you may be joking, but; even in your image that is the wing-clips on the back of the pin.

The product image for the front of the pin, which looks like the Organized Play logo, is on the right-hand side.

For those of us in a bad state (no new AcP, sessions not awarding future AcP) should we hold off making any purchases with existing previously earned AcP? Or will the expected fix account for that?

Congratulations, all you crazy stellar and interstellar numismatists!

Awesome to see the new pins! I'll rejoice to see these faction logos displaying properly on the forum one day. ;)

And the one real-time PaizoCon scenario I managed to attend was awesome! Been enjoying my PBP scenarios actively in progress. Great stuff.

My understanding of what's causing the errors is that once it's fixed, everything should snap back to reality, including any purchases you make in the meantime.

ACP is apparently still broken? I’m not getting ACP for anything since PaizoCon…

Tech is aware of the problem and is currently reviewing the code to fix this issue. Once it’s fixed, you won’t have to do anything but refresh your points to fix the errors. Achievement Points can still be spent currently. We hope to have good news on this front very soon!

At the end of May, we also announced that we would be awarding every player a starting player grant of 80 Achievement Points for both Pathfinder and Starfinder Society. You may use these points to unlock an uncommon ancestry, other fun uncommon options, or just as a cushion for a couple of resurrections should your low-level character meet with an untimely critical hit. The aforementioned issues with Achievement Points are also blocking this grant for a small number of users, but that should be fixed shortly as well.

So, everybody got the 80 acp, it might not just show up yet on some people, and once it's fixed, they'll show up when you refresh your points.

Liberty's Edge 3/5 *

Right, but how do I know if it showed up or not? I only check my points a few times a year when I am considering buying a boon. I have no idea how many points I have earned, how many I've spent, and how many I should currently have.

I really hope the 80 AcP grant will show up as a line in your session info.

Dark Archive 4/5 *** Venture-Lieutenant, Finland—Turku

Ah, so what you're saying is that if you now check your points and they show 400, you wouldn't know if it included that extra 80 acp or if that extra was still missing?

Well, normal games give 4acp, 4xp, and 4 reputation. Convention games give slightly more. Your ACP should be roughly equal to the total xp on your 2e characters, minus any boons you might have purchased, or you could check the "summary" page and check how much reputation each of your characters have in total - your AcP should again be roughly equal to that, unless you've failed several secondary/primary missions.
GMing gives double the amount of AcP, so if you've GM'd a lot, then your AcP will be higher than your xp or reputation.

I guess you could use those stats to estimate whether or not the 80 acp is already included in your total or not.

For example:
My 8 characters have total fame of 459. I have 45 tables of GM credit. GM credits give double points, since nearly all of the games I've ran have been assigned to characters, half of those double points are already included in the 459 fame. So 4x45 = 180pts more, for a total of 639 points. I **should** have about 639 acp.
I've spent 160 on a sprite, 80 on a kayal, and 80 on a changeling, for a total of 320 aco spent, leaving 319 acp. However, I have 411 acp. That's roughly 90 more than what I've calculated, so it seems that my 80 acp have already been included.

("roughly", because I've run some games on conventions and on gamedays and those give slightly more acp, but then some adventures also give you bonus reputation, which is why the difference between my estimate what I should have (319+80=399) vs what I have (411) exists.)

Dark Archive 4/5 5/55/5

Well if you haven't played much of 2E or Starfinder, it can be pretty easy to spot since you automatically get them regardless. Which is probably the fastest way to due the math without having to do the math if that applies.

I have almost 4 full pages of 2e credit, so that's why I was hoping to avoid calculating it manually. I do notice I still have 0 points for SFS. That doesn't necessarily mean I didn't receive the 2e AcP, but it might be an indicator. Then again maybe I won't get the SFS AcP until I actually make an SFS character and play.

Hi all! As I'm sure you're aware, we've had some issues with AcP and GM credit not being awarded properly lately. I am delighted to announce that these issues are 95% fixed at this time! Any future sessions reported should grant AcP and GM credit correctly, and any new OP IDs generated should include the 80 AcP starting grant for both Pathfinder and Starfinder Society.

As for the 5%, well. There are some people who didn't get the 80 AcP for mysterious reasons and will need to be kicked manually, which I now have the power to do! If you fall into this category, first try refreshing your points once more using the button on the GM/event coordinator tab. Assuming that doesn't work, please email orgplayreportingerrors[at]paizo[dot]com with the affected OP ID and I will manually kick them into behaving. Some people have also had issues with sessions awarding erroneous PFS1 GM credit; this can be solved in the same manner.

I encourage anybody with issues to email in; the fix is literally two button clicks and I would hate for people to neglect emailing me just to avoid being a bother. I want to fix these problems, please let me!

Thanks for your patience on this issue. I'll be working with tech going forward to ensure that issues like this don't go unresolved for weeks at a time. If you have any questions or other issues, don't hesitate to reach out at the above email!

You should have the 80 acp even if you haven't played any SFS scenarios.
