Imagine the Impossible!

In a land still scarred by a war between two undying archmages and their respective nations, reality defies the rules binding the rest of the world. Cities crafted by wishes and fields harvested by the walking dead lay in between lands where magic warps and twists with an undefinable will. Explore the history of immortal wizard kings, wield explosive and unusual technology, and channel awe-inspiring legends in a region where the present is still haunted by the past, and echoes of destruction still shudder across the minds and souls of those who brave the Impossible Lands!

Written by: Mariam Ahmad, Saif Ansari, Alexandria Bustion, Basheer Ghouse, Michelle Jones, TJ Kahn, Matt Morris, Dave Nelson, Shiv Ramdas, Mikhail Rekun, Michael Sayre, Tan Shao Han, Ruvaid Virk, Jabari Weathers, and Brian Yaksha.

Great book, inconsistent editing

4/5

A longer review was eaten by the website, so this will be a bit shorter than originally planned.

This is a great book, well worth the buy. It has fantastic art and great exposition for all its major areas.

I did find a distracting number of errors throughout however, ranging from simple typos (such as the Alkenstar stat block indicating 93% dwarven population; or the description of Bhopan's Eternal Bloom palace not aligning with the provided map in cardinal directions), missed words in sentences, and confusing inconsistencies (such as the myth of Dongun Hold's "eternal stews" being incompatible with the fact that the city doesn't use fire for cooking for a season every year). Paizo usually has an excellent standard of editing and proofreading, which is what makes these errors all the more glaring.

I also personally do not understand the niche the Vishkanya ancestry is meant to occupy. The others are all great, but I fail to see what really sets the Vishkanya apart aside from "misunderstood", something already readily represented in other player options like the tiefling. They might have had a place as a heritage, but they seem to lack substance as a full ancestry.

Another Fantastic Addition to the Lost Omens Line

5/5

This book is fantastic. It introduces a number of great ancestries, with enough page count to make them rich and exciting options. It describes a number of fantastic adventuring locations with a radically different feel from anything else you'll find in the Inner Sea. It's great at offering inspiration for adventuring ideas; each of the three cities in Nex made me want to run a campaign based in that city.

And the art - I'm not a big art person in general, but the art in this book is AMAZING. Probably the most evocative, imagination-inspiring, and beautiful art I've seen in any Paizo book. (And that's a high bar!)

This book is neck-in-neck with the (phenomenal) Mwangi Expanse book for my favorite book in the Lost Omens line.

This will be a godsend for all the AP content we’re getting in the Impossible Lands this year! The Lost Omens book on the Mwangi Expanse was a necessity for my Strength of Thousands campaign, and I’m sure this will be no different.

Been waiting for this one for ages; glad to finally have it official.

The Impossible Lands are one of the regions that feels uniquely Golarion, with so many stories to tell and fascinating cultures. Very glad 2e is giving the continent of Garund its due - and Jalmeray gives us some much-overdue Vudran love as well. I'm so excited!

Now... any guesses on new Ancestries? That sure looks like a heroic Girtablilu on the cover, and Ghorans are so far MIA in 2e. Maybe some Vudran options in Jalmeray? I'm hoping the local Gnolls and Kulenett dwarves get some attention here, too.

If we put Ghorans and Girtablilus together with the four ancestries described in the Vudra gazetteer in AoE (Vanara, Vishkanya, Kashrishi, and Ratajin), we'd have a total of six new ancestries — which is how many were introduced in TME.

Edit: Not sure if I should hope for playable Girtablilus, however, since they're large-sized creatures. Maybe this book will finally open the gates.

It is clearly a party of only gnolls. So I clearly expect this book to have 12 pages of gnoll feats and heritages.

Who could have seen this coming? :O

Jokes aside though, very excited for this, the lost omens books have been killing it so far and that cover looks sick!

Very excited about some of the names attached to this too, fantastic writers we've seen before like Allie Bustion, Michelle Jones and Mikhail Rekun, but also some new faces, including some indian writers!! Gives me a lot of hope that Jalmeray will be handled well and maybe lead into a Vudra book in the future..... (Saif Ansari's Vudra article was incredible and it's a crime we don't have more.)

I think that art is actually drawn from one of the P1 Campaign books, unfortunately.

I would like to see some of the ancestries talked about in the Vudra gazetteer in AoE show up. I want Rhinofolk, not as good as Elephantfolk, but close second.

Getting Psychic and this in the same year took a pretty good dent out of things to beg for! Rounding out the continent with a Golden Road book and an eventual trip to Fallen Razatlan are next on my list to cheerlead for... but I'm gonna shut up for a little while :)

I'd hope for at least one Ancestry native to the mountains, or maybe one displaced by the rise of Geb and Nex. While all those Vudran options sound like a joy, I'm skeptical we'll get four Ancestries who aren't found on mainland Garund at all.

A recent thread of mine about Iblydos had one of the devs say they don't want to tackle it until they have a Mythic-equivalent finished. I don't believe it's considered part of the Inner Sea region, which is why it was in Distant Shores.

Well, looks like I won't be running Outlaws of Alkenstar or Blood Lords till this drops. Lol.

Curious if this will touch on Southern Garund at all. Certainly not anything major, but a bit on the bordering locals would be a nice bonus.

I do like that they haven't done the "let's do campaign book for regions where every single country got 1e campaign setting book already!" and instead they are taking advantage of region format by focusing on regions where none (or only one) of individual countries ever got book for them.

(I'm personally waiting for that casmaron and southern garund book, but impossible land is great thing to detail as well)

Out of the Vudrani/Jalmeri ancestries, I'd put some money on the Ratajin (alongside either the Vishkanya or Vanara, as a returning staple) - the Vudra article from AoE describes them as "curse-twisted", and LOWG describes Jalmeray as being particularly heavy on the likelihood of contracting a curse - and even has a section where curse-afflicted folk can safely isolate themselves, which would make them particularly fitting there.

Ghorans are a given as well, and there's a nonzero chance for Wyvarans as well, given they live in the mountains between Nex and the Mwangi Expanse.

Off the coast of southwestern Casmaron, roughly halfway between Vudra and the Impossible Lands.

The price is a bit interesting, indication of this book being massive or just a slight price increase?

Will a Deluxe Edition be made available at launch? Or should we wait for the product line to catch up to the previous ones first?

I dearly hope it's indicative of a big book - curiously though, it's the single most expensive standard LO hardcover right now (Mwangi Expanse was 49.99 @ 312 pages and Absalom was 54.99 @ 400 pages).

If this is consistent, we're looking at something in the realm of 450 or so pages.
Which would be just blow-the-doors-off-levels of amazing, but also quite impressive, considering the relatively short author list here! (Roughly 10 fewer than on the aforementioned books.)

Great to see! Folks have been wanting this. And the price suggests maybe it's a similar size to Mwangi?

The Nexian channeler archetype for the PF1 Medium sprung to my mind.

I'm sure we'll be going into more detail about the book, including its content and price, in the upcoming months, but it's not my line, so I'll let the leads (or Erik) drop information as they see fit ^_^.

But on that note I've overheard some REALLY COOL stuff from Eleanor and Luis about this, so get ready...

Kinda neat how this setting book will pull from the last three rulebooks (and maybe even the fourth depending on final content for Dark Archive). I thoroughly enjoyed Mwangi Expanse and am looking forward to seeing each region get the extensive examination they deserve.

Overall, I think the Lost Omens books have been a major improvement over the 1e splat books.

I mean, organized play sure does touch a lot of the in-world content, including some places that have only ever been explored through PFS adventures.

I'm very curious about the potential religion section in this book; the one in the Mwangi Expanse was awesome.

I'm expecting a smattering of Vudrani deities that are popular in Jalmeray, but also there's the exciting possibility of new deities on the mainland - I bet there's some cool unique faiths to be found in the likes of Alkenstar and Nex.

And of course, regional takes on existing deities - you aren't telling me that Nethys isn't all the rage in Nex, or Urgathoa in Geb.
