Pathfinder Society Year 4 Rule Updates

Greetings, Pathfinders! As the beginning of the Year of Boundless Wonder approaches in August, we wanted to let you know about the changes coming to the Pathfinder Society program. Aside from the updates in this blog, we don’t have any other rule changes or alterations to the program planned; this year should be quieter on that front, rather than the radical changes we’ve had in previous years.

June 2022 Scenario Previews

The Drift is malfunctioning, Triune has fallen silent, and countless citizens of the Pact Worlds are lost to the chaos! Amid this upheaval, Fitch and numerous Starfinder volunteers trawl Pact Worlds space aboard the Master of Stars, searching for survivors in need of aid, derelict starships, Drift debris to investigate, and clues that might shed light on the source of the Drift Crisis itself. When a starship belonging to an ally of the Society is discovered immobile and powerless, Fitch dispatches a team of Starfinders to investigate. But the PCs’ simple quest to check in on a friend quickly becomes a rescue mission that will take them far beyond starship corridors to an annexed Drift beacon and the metaphorical doorstep of the mysterious “4th.” Starfinder Society Scenario #5-04: Fragment of the 4th is a scenario for levels 9–12 by Isis Wozniakowska.

Pathfinder Society: Year 4 Announcement

Following the dramatic conclusion to the Year of Shattered Sanctuaries, the Pathfinder Society has been entrusted with a vast hoard of treasure! The Grand Lodge’s vaults overflow with an abundance of magic items and valuable relics. The structure even holds a few strange creatures, such as a wise-cracking animate skull that claims it can’t remember anything about its past yet insists it can still cast powerful spells. It’s up to the Pathfinders to learn what these oddities are, where they come from, what they do—and why a nefarious enemy from the Society’s past wants to claim the contents of the vaults for herself!

This month we’re back on the trail of legendary explorer Jelev Rasheen! Well known for her voyages at the dawn of Drift travel, Jelev made regular trips into the Drift, returning every few years with holds full of treasures and relics from distant worlds. Organized Play: Pathfinder & Starfinder Interactive Preview

It all started when Starfinder launched and John Compton (lead of Organized Play development at the time) kept threatening me with a “Time Capsule Boon” where he’d let Pathfinder Society Characters transition into Starfinder Society. It was something of the atomic bomb equivalent of threats to be uttered in the office. The idea of crossing the streams between the campaigns was ludicrous. LUDICROUS, I SAY!

The Growing Pathfinder Society

During Year 3: Year of Shattered Sanctuaries, the Pathfinder Society finds itself under attack as dangerous threats loom over lodges across the Inner Sea. Fortunately, the Society’s recruitment efforts over the past two years have been successful. To represent these changes as well as other developments in Pathfinder lore, we’ll be updating several of the Pathfinder Society Achievement Point boons to make it easier to create characters of several different ancestries. These adjustments will go into effect when Year 3 launches on August 19th.

Pathfinder Society Scenarios: A Tip of the Hats

PaizoCon draws near, and that means we're approaching our last month of regularly scheduled scenarios—at least from a production standpoint. May scenarios have to be ready extra early for PaizoCon GMs, June Starfinder Society Scenarios have an early launch at Origins, July's adventures all have to be ready early for Gen Con, and our Pathfinder Society scenarios have to be ready early for Gen Con GMs. We've got a good handle on getting everything done by then. But there's no denying that it makes for a stressful 6+ months of production, and there are days when I'd love to retreat somewhere dark where I can just escape it all for 4 hours.

Full Moon, Hot Blood

As we brainstorm adventures, the team often comes up with ideas that we have to shelve for months or even years before they come to fruition. When we were looking at our season's schedule months ago, we had several open Tier 3-7 slots, and at long last there was the opportunity to realize one of my dream two-part series that's perfect for the Halloween season. It's been floating in my head since a shortly after Pathfinder Society Scenario #5-16: Destiny of the Sands, Part 3: Sanctum of the Sages, which has a somewhat famous and temporary character augmentation. The idea that we could use that concept for something as strange as a monstrous template, though... that's always been a bit of a dream. Thankfully, Linda was ready to take the lead on developing our Mysteries Under Moonlight series, and she's going to jump in to say some more.

Unseasonably Warm?

If you haven't heard the stereotypes, Seattle has a rather dreary reputation for being constantly cloudy, rainy, chilly, and damp. That's only about 80% true; our summers (starting a little before PaizoCon) are quite beautiful and warm. However, it's around late February that I'm rather desperate for the feel direct sunlight and warmth. Solstice Scar Update

At PaizoCon 2017, Pathfinder Society Roleplaying Guild launched a new form of multi-table interactive special (usually shortened to just “a Special”). In doing so, we changed up two big assumptions from past Specials. First, other Specials traditionally kicked off a new season and included integral plot developments that really incentivized playing that Special as soon as possible. Second, those Specials were each built to be self-contained, to portray snapshot events that never evolved, and needed to be built from the ground up each time. As we explored new ways to provide Specials to more conventions—particularly to those taking place between January and May, by which point many people have already played the big Special that debuted at Gen Con the previous year—we developed Pathfinder Society Special #8–99: The Solstice Scar, a modular Special comprised of numerous 90-minute-long parts that can be swapped out over time to tell an evolving story.

Quoth the Tengu, "Adventure More"

One of the great advantages of working in the organized play medium is that we produce so many scenarios. That means that when there's a lot of fan interest in a certain area, group, or topic, we can usually look a little further down the schedule and say, "I think we could make some room here." Every since Pathfinder Society Scenario #6-13: Of Kirin and Kraken we've had more requests for adventures set in Kwanlai and featuring tengus. For that matter, ever since Taldor was a Pathfinder Society faction, players and GMs have asked me when they'd be able to bring about serious reform in that nation—admittedly some were asking so that they could snag a better noble title. This month we're doing both, and we're really pleased with the scenarios releasing today.

Keeping Busy With New Adventures

Phew! I always think of the months leading up to PaizoCon and Gen Con as the busiest time of the year, and while that's true, it often downplays the holiday season's tight schedule to get all of the scenarios ready a little earlier so that our colleagues can head off for some well-deserved rest at the end of the year. I've been loving this season from the moment we started planning it, and every batch of scenarios makes me love Season 9 of Pathfinder Society Roleplaying Guild a little more. Not only are we gearing up for a series of Sovereign Court adventures leading up to the War for the Crown Adventure Path, working on an exciting Exchange storyline, outlining a powerful Silver Crusade arc, and using the Pathfinder Adventure Card Guild to pursue one of the perpetrators behind Pathfinder Society Special #9-00: Assault on Absalom, but we're also in the early stages of locking down Pathfinder Society's Season 10. If you've seen team members cackling with barely-contained glee on social media, it's likely for these reasons and more.

Familiar Faces, Unknown Enemies

The Year of Factions' Favor has several intended themes—most notably a chance to feature factions' storylines in exciting ways—but Linda and I have found that this season lends itself to two themes that are equally gratifying: bringing back past NPCs and having them team up with the PCs directly to do awesome things. If you've followed earlier Pathfinder Society stories, you'll no doubt recognize several of these characters, as well as many more in the months to come. Disparate Elements, Epic Stories

While we're excited for the launch of so many new adventures at Gen Con in a few more weeks, Season 8 cannot be overshadowed with its last two scenarios. Just as the Society has gathered extraordinary tools with which to crack the Untouchable Opal, so too has Season 8 brought together exciting scenarios to explore the elemental planes. Both of these adventures are fitting capstones.

Earth, Fire, and Shoanti

In the final months of the Year of the Stolen Storm, the Pathfinder Society has secured all but one piece of what it needs to destroy an artifact and unleash a powerful force of good. As we gear up for this finale, the organized play team is gearing up for Gen Con—all three Pathfinder Society scenarios, three Starfinder Society scenarios, a Pathfinder Society multi-table interactive special, a Starfinder Society pregenerated character special, five new Starfinder Society quests, a huge portion of the Adventure Card Guild's new season, and several dozen new boons for distribution at conventions over the course of the year. Of course we have precious few weeks to go before those start arriving in Gen Con GMs' downloads, and there are several exciting scenarios coming out this week.

The Pathfinder Society recently won the Sargava Chalice in the eponymous footrace, but few know that the trophy cup is actually a cyclops relic dating back to Ghol-Gan. In Pathfinder Society Scenario #8-21: Champion's Chalice, Part 2: Agents of the Eye, the PCs carry the chalice deep into the Kaava Lands, where the relic can grant them a unique window into the past and a fallen empire. Author Nicholas Herold takes us to a long-forgotten corner of Golarion's history in this Tier 1-5 scenario, and it's up to the PCs to avert an imminent crisis with the help of desperate allies.

Adventures Worth Holding Your Breath For

Just as the Seattle area transitions from chilly and wet to "sunny yet inexplicably still raining," so too is the Pathfinder Society Roleplaying Guild team eager to get outside and explore some exciting locations. We're also pleased to have an exciting Season 9 schedule in place along with the name and logo, much of which we'll announce at PaizoCon 2017, so be sure to attend the PaizoCon Preview Banquet and the organized play panel the following day to ask any questions you have. In the meantime, let me share a few more secrets about this month's scenarios—both of which lead into our PaizoCon releases!

Adventures in the Isles

2017 has been a busy year so far! Tonya recently announced our revised Retail Support Program to provide boon support to public, non-convention events. Linda and I are busily outlining and assigning the rest of Season 8, we've locked in Season 9, Linda's made tremendous strides in updating our FAQ, and we're preparing the next batch of scenario product pages—including at least one surprise for an upcoming convention. The team's also enjoyed incorporating significant crossovers between the Pathfinder Society Roleplaying Guild and the Pathfinder Society Adventure Card Guild, including some fun Adventure Card Guild developments to the Scarab Sages narrative in the ongoing Season of Plundered Tombs. On top of that, we're busily flying around the country to meet with organized play communities in person, with Tonya having attended DunDraCon in San Ramon, CA this past weekend and Mark and Linda attending TotalCon in Marlborough, MA next weekend. On top of that, I've been helping out on several cross-department collaborations that I imagine we'll announce a few months from now.

Elementals Armed to the Teeth

It's been about a week since I returned from my sixth SCARAB, a delightful 4-day gaming convention in Columbia, South Carolina that I've been attending since before I started working at Paizo—and it's now one of the biggest Pathfinder Society Roleplaying Guild events worldwide. Each year it's been a great experience, and this year was no exception. I've definitely returned with some fun stories. I'll fondly remember the high-level group of adventurers who navigated a dungeon almost entirely by repeatedly casting augury, and the high-level group that nearly decided to throw both major NPCs under a bus and declare themselves queens of a small village makes for a thrilling tale. I can't forget the giantslayers who neither understood giant nor could identify a peryton, referring to instead as a "deer-headed marmot-squeezer." Perhaps best of all was getting through an entire scenario without rolling initiative because we decided that throwing a immense rival party on another plane of existence was a much more fun alternative to raiding someone's home. Thank you Del Collins II, Matt Polkowsky, and the SCARAB crew for putting on a great event, and thanks to David Shaw, Amanda Plageman, Brent Gass, Matt Beebe, Leslie Foster, Chris First, and many others for some great games.

Where Winter is Always Warm

This is the time of year when I hear requests for wintry scenarios that involve trekking through Irrisen, delves into ice caverns, or toboggan-jousting (sounds dangerous—please don't hurt yourself trying it). While there are no doubt tales yet to be told of misfit toys that (in the true spirit of Pathfinder Society Roleplaying Guild) come to life and take over a tribe of gnolls, I'm not a big fan of cold weather—much less reinforcing how nippy it's getting in much of the northern hemisphere by playing an adventure that culminates in getting eaten by an icicle ooze. No, we're instead fleeing the frosty climes by vacationing in the elemental planes: the Plane of Air and the Plane of Fire, to be precise.

Off to the Planes!

We launched Pathfinder Society Roleplaying Guild's Season of the Stolen Storm with the promise of exploring the elemental planes, yet so far, the season has maintained a conspicuously Material Plane focus. Part of that's a lesson learned from Season 6, whose two dozen scenarios incorporated advanced technology in modest quantities yet developed a nothing-but-tech reputation because many of those scenarios debuted near the beginning of the season. This year we've been ramping up our extraplanar storyline more gradually, including Pathfinder Society Special #7-99: Through Maelstrom Rift as a peek behind the scenes of developments on their way and Pathfinder Society Scenario #8-05: Ungrounded but Unbroken as the Society's first on-screen step onto the elemental planes. At the same time, we've provided an oft-requested return to Galt, a story of redemption in Dtang Ma, an evergreen Tier 3-7 scenario, and more.

No Trick, But a Serious Treat!

October scenarios always present an interesting challenge because they coincide so well with Halloween yet are also early enough in the season that I'm itching to develop the yearlong metaplot further. In the past we've had some creepy October adventures like Hall of the Flesh Eaters and To Judge a Soul, Part 2: Karma Reclaimed, but we've never had one with explicit Halloween imagery. This time, I carved out a piece of the Season 8 schedule like a chunk of pumpkin flesh from a cheerful jack-o'-lantern, tentatively naming the adventure "No seriously, Halloween." Linda and I didn't know quite what the plot would be until we combined it with another concept that had been percolating in our collection of madcap ideas. Then it all came together so beautifully that Linda couldn't resist writing Pathfinder Society Scenario #8-06: Reaping What We Sow herself. If we follow the jack-o'-lantern analogy, Linda is the candle—so often a cheerful source of light and warmth. From within the haunted depths of a jack-o'-lantern fortress, however, her creative energies shine with a truly sinister radiance. In this Tier 1-5 adventure, the PCs travel to a small town in northern Galt on a mission of peace and redemption, yet it can so quickly become a tragedy of blood and tears. Come for the Shelynite pumpkin-carving festival! Stay for the legacy of vengeance and terror (with notes so a GM can lighten the mood or play up the horror as befits the audience)!

Delve Into Alien Worlds

Once Gen Con ended in August, Linda and I had a chance to breathe after pushing ourselves to create an immense number of adventures for the Pathfinder Society Roleplaying Guild. By breathe, of course, I mean we kept busy with sanctioning a big pile of modules and Adventure Paths (many of which we're queuing for a big release next month); outline and assign a big chunk of Season 8's adventures; and perform some long-range planning that takes us through 2017 and beyond. When it came time to start developing September's adventures, it had been so long since we'd done any scenario development that the process seemed strangely alien.

Familiar Places, New Adventures

Many up-and-coming Pathfinders start their careers in one of the evergreen adventures designed for 1st-level characters. Our four current evergreen scenarios are First Steps—Part 1, The Confirmation, The Wounded Wisp, and The Consortium Compact. One of the goals of these evergreen scenarios is to include options for both players and GMs that keep the scenario fresh with multiple playthroughs. To that end, we just released an update to The Wounded Wisp, revising a particular handout to be relevant to upcoming events in Season 8. The new handout appears at the end of the scenario's handout section, along with the versions of that handout from Seasons 6 and 7.

Pathfinder Campaign Setting: The Inner Sea World Guide (PFRPG)

Calling All Seekers!

The Pathfinder Society Roleplaying Guild has produced a huge number of great adventures over the years, but few can compare to series Eyes of the Ten, a four-part extravaganza of high-level play and dire revelations about the Society and its enemies. Just ask any veteran of the campaign. When Eyes of the Ten survivors meet up at conventions, they excitedly swap stories of "Here's how we handled this faction mission," "We saved that NPC by doing this," and "Yeah, that monster nearly ended us—twice." A lot of that excitement comes from the powerful story and wild destinations, but a big share of the exhilaration comes from something we do all too rarely in Pathfinder Society: play high-level characters. In fact, nearly 5 years have passed since the last installment of Eyes of the Ten released. In that time the campaign has included a few higher-level opportunities in interactive specials and sanctioned high-level printed adventures, but the organized play program hasn't really published more high-level content that it can call its own.

Revisiting Themes, Characters, and Chronicles

This month is exciting for a host of reasons. First, February marks the anniversary of when I began working at Paizo, and I'll soon observe the conclusion of my third year on the job. February is also when I first started playing Pathfinder Society as part of a home group in Georgia six years ago, which eerily makes this the point at which I have participated in the campaign for an equal amount of time as a participant and volunteer as I have as an employee. I plan on celebrating this curious milestone by continuing work on an exciting, upcoming project for the organized play campaign—one I'll reveal soon enough! In a more official sense, you'll note that both Linda and I are brandishing deadlier titles that we trust will keep the pugwampis at bay.

Back to Cherished Haunts

I recently returned from Columbia, South Carolina, where I was a guest at SCARAB, a gaming convention with a very strong Pathfinder Society presence operated by Regional Venture-Coordinator Delbert Collins II. This was my fifth year making the trip, and it's always a really great opportunity to see familiar faces, play a few adventures, and shout my throat raw while GMing. The kill count stayed relatively modest, barring two gentlemen laid low during Pathfinder Society Scenario #7-11: Ancients' Anguish who acknowledged their characters' demise with admirable grace and both came back to life in order to finish what they had started. I also enjoyed my first chance to actually play Pathfinder Society Special #6-98: Serpents Rise, as presented by Venture-Captain Matt Polkowsky.

Looking Back and Looking Ahead

2015 has been a good year for Pathfinder Society Roleplaying Guild adventures. We set some ambitious goals, including doubling the number of interactive special events and providing several new exclusive scenarios that let players portray Aspis Consortium agents and the kobolds that live below Absalom—far more ways for aspiring 5-star GMs to run their 10 special adventures. We reassembled the powerful Sky Key and activated it to see what would happen. We have since struck back against the Aspis Consortium for its unprovoked (okay, only somewhat provoked) attack on the Grand Lodge in this first half of the Year of the Serpent, and there's more excitement to come in 2016.

The Evergreen Desert

November's adventures fit two of the toughest kinds of scenario to write. The first is the load-bearing adventure, one whose contribution to the campaign's ongoing plotline is so central that it must work properly. The second is the Tier 1-2 evergreen scenario, which far and away sees the most play of any adventure during that season of Pathfinder Society Roleplaying Guild. I know that from replay alone, the latter needs to be especially clean, effective, and fun because so many people will see it—often again and again while taking characters from 1st to 2nd level. These needed some especially capable authors.

Pathfinder Society Scenario #6–10: The Wounded Wisp (PFRPG) PDF

Updated My Journal

November is upon us again, which means it's time to release a new evergreen mission for the latest crop of wide-eyed Pathfinder Society agents. These low-level, replayable scenarios are designed for new players and veteran players alike. For new players, they include context and pointers for the PCs on a level that would feel out of place in a 1–5 scenario, with 5th level characters receiving advice meant for trainees. They are evergreen, tied to the Pathfinder Society's mission as a whole, so they stay relevant and focus on the information that is useful background regardless of the season. For our most prolific players, replayable scenarios are a way to bring characters through level 1 without expending the limited resource of scenarios they have not yet played. We expect that some people will play an evergreen scenario many times, and so it's important that we make sure that the scenario has surprises in store for people on their 5th playthrough. The replayable scenarios have randomized elements and other GM options to introduce variety and support multiple approaches that the PCs might take. With each replayable scenario (including this month's new release), we've increased the number of ways that the GM and players can customize their experience. My favorite part of evergreen scenarios is the way that they bring new players and experienced players together. Anyone can grab a first level pregen, pull up a chair, and join in.

Icy Peaks and Cold Trails

This month the Pathfinder Society finishes a two-part series, To Judge a Soul, which has traveled Amanandar and its neighboring regions as the PCs work with the Venture-Captain Bakten to uncover centuries-old secrets that touch upon at least half a dozen major regions in Tian Xia. One of the campaign's most prolific and acclaimed authors Larry Wilhelm concludes this storyline with Pathfinder Society Scenario #7-08: To Judge a Soul, Part 2: Karma Reclaimed, which travels into Zi Ha, bastion of the samsarans. The campaign rarely gives mountains the attention they deserve, and this was an excellent opportunity to revisit a rather underserved demographic: the yetis. Our star Glacial Rose looks a little confused that the PCs want to enter her precipitous home, but I won't spoil whether she's friend or foe. I also won't spoil the final villain's delightful art, which is possibly the happiest I've ever seen a BBEG (big bad evil guy). Play this scenario so that you can see it in context, and I think you'll agree.

Three New Faces

This month the Pathfinder Society is sending PCs to two regions little explored by the campaign. The first is Tamran, an oft-assaulted city that serves as the capitol of Nirmathas in its ongoing conflict with Molthune. We've known that a Pathfinder lodge existed in Tamran for about a decade; in fact, that lodge's foundation is the reason that Molthune became so hostile to the Society (clearly the Decemvirate were picking sides). What was never clear was who operated it. When you play Pathfinder Society Scenario #7-07: Trouble in Tamran, you'll get a more formal introduction to Venture-Captain Oraiah Tolal. She's a fascinating character in part because she combines so many elements rarely seen in the canon roster of venture-captains: she's a divine spellcaster, her patron is one of the "minor deities," and she's a halfling. Of course, there's much more to her than aligning with a few in-world demographics, and I look forward to her giving more missions in the future.

Blast from the Past

With the Year of the Serpent in full swing, many players have had an opportunity to clash with the Society's old enemy, the Aspis Consortium. While that organization plays a major role in the season's plotline, Linda and I are also revisiting some older stories, continuing more recent narrative threads, and exploring places that the campaign has never seen. We'd like to pull back the curtain a bit on how we came up with the outlines for the August scenarios. As you might guess there are some MINOR SPOILERS ahead—more to help you choose which character to play, and less to ruin the story.

I check the messageboards with considerable frequency, even when I'm working on the considerable number of scenarios and other amazing adventures to debut at PaizoCon and Gen Con. What I see is that many people enjoy the challenge that Season 4 presents with some finding it a little tough and a minority claiming that it still isn't hard enough. Balancing encounters to present a respectable challenge without being unbeatable for a typical group is always on my mind as I outline, assign, and develop scenarios, but I can respect that there are players out there who want to face ever-stronger foes.

When a Faction Turns Out the Lights

Ever since we divulged which factions would disappear, the forums have been humming with speculation, questions, and clarifications about exactly how the whole faction retirement process will work. In brief overview, we are removing two factions from the available options for Pathfinder Society Organized Play. These factions are not necessarily disappearing from the face of Golarion, but for a variety of reasons they are withdrawing their direct involvement in the Pathfinder Society. Two new scenarios, #4-21 Way of the Kirin and #4-23 Rivalry's End, allow Lantern Lodge and Shadow Lodge faction PCs respectively the opportunity to play through their factions' conclusions. Of course, anyone can play these scenarios, but there's a special something waiting for members of the above factions. On August 14th, whether a person has played the scenarios or not, the two factions will be removed, and all existing Lantern Lodge and Shadow Lodge characters will have to switch factions.
