The Scales of Fate

Thursday, July 9, 2020

Pethjun tightens the bandage around her left bicep, wincing just a bit as the fibers of the cloth meet the open wound. “So, you want more Sewer Dragons in your Society, huh? How we gonna protect ourselves from things like this,” Pethjun kicks the slain body of a nearby otyugh, “if you take all our best warriors and explorers?” Trapmaster Tok and Chief Yiddlepode, standing nearby, nod their heads and turn to their Pathfinder friend Drandle Dreng, waiting for an answer.

“Well,” Dreng begins, “didn’t we come down here and help you put these things down before too many kobolds got hurt? And just think of how much stronger your tribe might become when veteran Pathfinders retire back here, bringing their magic weapons, arcane secrets, and experience with them? The Society and the Sewer Dragons have been allies for a long time; let’s make it official. I’ve already convinced Valsin that we need you all now more than ever, and you need us. Who warned you about that merchant who was giving you a bad deal on the maps and relics you were looking to trade, eh?”

Red kobold holding a short spear

Yiddlepode steps forward before Pethjun can respond, drawing herself up to her full height and managing to make it seem much more impressive than the three feet she actually stands. “You’re a good friend, Dreng. And the Pathfinders have treated us fairly for all the years we’ve known each other.” Yiddlepode turns to the kobolds standing nearby, many wounded from the recent fight, but all focused intently on the current conversation. “Spread the word! From this day forward, any Sewer Dragon who wishes to join the Pathfinder Society may do so with my blessing. It is a large world, with much change and much opportunity swirling around us. Let us take this opportunity to spread our influence and gain new knowledge. Let the world to come be shaped by dragons!”

As Dreng watches the cheering kobolds pump their scaled fists into the air, a broad guffaw cracks his face in two, his head rolling back in unrestrained mirth. “Let the world to come be shaped by dragons, indeed” the venture-captain laughs, before a dark cloud passes across his features. “I expect we will need nothing less than dragons on our side in the days to come.”

The Pathfinder Society organized play campaign has been, since its inception, a game where the community of players across the world can shape the stories we tell and play a hand in determining the course of Golarion. Over the years, the Society has completed many adventures alongside kobold allies, including both the Sewer Dragons and other kobold tribes across the Inner Sea and beyond. It is my pleasure to announce that, when the Advanced Player’s Guide releases in August, kobolds will be joining the ranks of always-available ancestries for Pathfinder Society players. We’re excited to meet the new kobold recruits in just a few short weeks! Until then…

Explore! Report! Cooperate! (And maybe set a few traps for unwary enemies!)

So, are kobolds going to be allowed in play after the APG releases? I can just see an all-kobold Society game now.

Seriously, when I started my last PF2 game, I had a table full of goblins. And one half-elf. It was chaotic fun, especially when one of them decided to snack on the dead, diseased cow.

Yep! Kobolds will be allowed for all players when the APG releases.

This is fantastic news, thanks to everyone involved who made the sanctioning happen pre-release.

There are so many bits of additional lore hidden in this blog, as well... for example:
* kobolds clearly love the smell of cabbage;
* kobolds are morning people, since Drandle Dreng never schedules meetings during respectable hours;

What other speculative conclusions can we find hidden here?

Welcome to the Society, our Kobold friends!

(I was also hoping for tengu... They may be the first ancestry I spend Achievement points upon! However, kobolds do make lore sense considering how often they have allied with the society.)

Yay for more small races!

Yeah, that's on me as I've been looking at the APG as part of the block of "August 1st releases"that normally coincide with GenCon, but it is actually scheduled for release July 30.

A good decision as it wouldn't have made sense to allow goblins but not kobolds when they're much more common in Absalom and as allies to the Society!

Looking forward to seeing more scaly friends and more good news!

I've honestly wanted this since playing Sewer Dragons of Absalom.

I'm guessing +DEX/+WIS/-STR for ancestry, but I can't wait to find out!!! :P

They're not (at least, not collectively)! The otyughs started it, and none of them were wearing hats.

As a vocal dissident against many PFS Leadership decisions in the last 6 months, I'm happy to say this is awesome!

Sanctioning of a ACP free character option BEFORE it even gets published is exactly the kind of stuff that makes me super happy as a paizo customer. Great job guys! This is real good progress and its great to see.

So happy to see this! Totally awesome!

I was always a little hesitant about giving away my kobold boons to a certain friend who was obsessed with the little yapyaps when I had a few "ideas" for characters myself...and now I'll get to explore them in 2e without any reservations!

If I may ask, which part do you "not like"?

That other people are having fun using different options? That the setting embraces the same idea of diversity that the company does?

I guess the same question could be asked of Class options and Deities. Man this would be a boring setting with only half a dozen of each.

Nobody is forcing you to play a Kobold.

The unanswered question is, will this only effect PF2? Or will they become always available in pf1?

I can't speak for anybody else, but PF1 did sometimes seem a bit strange due to racial mixes. Especially when there was NO member of ANY Core race in a 6 party group.

That said, I love the idea of the Kobolds. They feel much LESS forced to me than goblins do, largely because they HAVE been allied to the Society for so long.

Now I just have to decide whether to rebuild one of my higher level characters as a Kobold :-).

*Straight out jaw drop*

That is the best news I've heard since the release of 2E! I was... not a fan of Goblins becoming a Core race. I felt it was a hard transition from the "burn everything/murder midgets" of past canon to them being a semi-civilized race. I campaigned early on for Kobolds to be that new race instead, citing how they have had positive interactions with other races in known history (the Sewer Dragons being among them). Alas, Goblins won out... and as the unofficial mascot of Paizo, I understood. I fully expected Kobolds to be released as a playable race, but I also figured we would have to earn that right, much like we will for those found in other source books.

I am pleasantly surprised! This is a GREAT move!

This is not a debate. This is merely my personal opinion that I don't like the Star Wars Cantina feel of the other campaigns in my fantasy.

Spoiler:
I don't have to love every single rule in the campaign. I doubt anyone does. Some people don't like the alchemist rules. Some people don't like the restricted replay rules. Some people don't like the accessibility rules. Etc. My opinion is just as valid as anyone else's. I didn't disparage you or anyone else for wanting to play a kobold. I am merely disappointed it was made an always available option such that I could wind up at a table of five kobolds and me which is not my vision of Golarion. That doesn't mean its deal-breaker. I'm not going to grab my dice, throw a tantrum, and run home.
