Year in Review: Organized Play in 2021

Thursday, December 30, 2021

Greetings, players! As we close out 2021, I wanted to share with you some of my favorite things: numbers and data! Let’s review some of the accomplishments and events of 2021, shall we?

Major Conventions: 4; PaizoCon Online, PAX Online, PaizoCon Online Europe and Gen Con Online
PaizoCon Tables: 839, run by 243 GMs
PAX Online Tables: 81, run by 38 GMs
PCOE Tables: 260, run by 115 GMs
Gen Con Online Tables: 429, run by 132 GMs
Other Supported Conventions: 80, running nearly 4,000 tables of adventures worldwide

Scenarios Released: 57, including 2 interactive specials
Rulebooks Sanctioned: 10
Adventures Sanctioned: 31
Ziggys Saved: 1
Sanctuaries Shattered: Wouldn’t you like to know
Total Tables Run Worldwide: Over 15,000!

When I look back at this year, I think the theme is resilience through uncertainty. Between shipping crises (remember when the boat was stuck? good times!), the ongoing pandemic, and shakeups at Paizo, this year has been tumultuous, to say the least. But this is the best community out there, and you all have rolled with the punches, adapted to the new terrain, and kept playing with us. I can’t thank you all enough for everything, and I can’t wait to see you all in 2022.

Before I leave you, I have a message from Mike Kimmel to share.

Hey everyone! The end of the calendar year also marks the end of my first year on the Organized Play team. It’s been a year filled with challenges, rewards, and adventures. One of my fondest memories of the year was being able to write my first adventure outline for Paizo, which led to a little bounty called Hillcross Roundup. I’m looking forward to outlining and developing more adventures and tackling more challenges in the months ahead. Later this year, we’ll be wrapping up the Year of Shattered Sanctuaries and jumping into Year 4. I can’t wait to share these exciting adventures with you! I hope I’ll have opportunities to meet and interact with more members of the community in 2022, whether that’s online, in person, or both. I want to hear all about your adventures!

Stay safe and warm, and until next time - Explore! Report! Cooperate! And we’ll see you in 2022!

Thank you Alex and all the great volunteers out there that organized so many games and helped us cope with the pandemic! I don’t know where I would be now with all of you!

Thank you for a wonderful year of adventures and friendship. One of my fondest memories this year was getting you at my 5 Nova table at SkalCon, watching everyone fight around the Bluesmobile that Dracomicron brought for his Steward character. I had so much fun GMing for that whole group, but it was lovely having you there, Alex.

Hugs,

Note: this does not refer to any allegèd Faction leaders, but rather to Zigkentharbon, Starfinder internal adjustment claims analyst, who was saved from 13 attacking Dire TPS Reports by a skittermander who was sextuply-wielding staplers and red pens blessed by a Chief Enumerating Officer of Abadar.

It was a great year of gaming and I hope that 2022 is an even greater gaming year! Hopefully we can get back to more live gaming and see each other at live events and maintain our online gaming as well.

Do not Read if you have not played a certain scenario or the Specials!:
I'm very cranky about a certain resolution because our ENTIRE table called it at point of rescue, and rhe response of pretty much every Senior Starfinder to the team was apparently "Nope, no problem, no big deal, don't worry about it, it's okay".

And then things happened. Between that and the fact that the Pathfinder Society knew about Hounds of Tindalos and the Starfinder Society didn't I'm beginning to wonder if the SFS leadership was lobotomized or something...

To correct a bit of misunderstanding...

Spoiler:

The Starfinder Society isn't a continuation of the Pathfinder Society with all their records and such, not at all. It's more people who found some of the chronicles (which are certainly sensationalised to some degree) and went "Wow that'd be cool!" and made up something new based on very limited information.

The Starfinder Society was founded shortly after the end of the Gap, and drew its inspiration from the incomplete tales of the Pathfinder Society

Hadn't considered it in the context of that spoiler, but that's not inaccurate. Suddenly it makes things so much more sensible -- it' wasn't as I indicated in the first spoiler.

Spoiler:
It's even worse, the Starfinder Society was founded by Pathfinder wannabes that found all the wrong books.

Back on track, though, glad we saved Ziggy and we had so many tables and events DURING A PANDEMIC and hopefully that helped us learn new and better things about social distancing, personal health, and safety during conventions and events as a whole!
