My opinion is that that particular line you cite is a holdover from the 3.5 version of the game that should be rewritten or just cut from the game—it's slipped by the errata so far because it's flavor text, not actual rules text, so the rules mongering seems to have missed it.

Characters are automatically proficient with any natural weapons they possess (pg 141). While the rules call this out with the caveat "possessed by their race", I think it is a fine and fair assumption to add to any gained due to a spell or class feature (the polymorph subschool calls this out in fact, pg 212).

There is no explicit rule in the Core Rulebook that says a Medium creature can't ride a Medium mount, but it is implied in secondary rules, such as the description of the riding dog and horse and the description of the paladin's divine bond. And it's explicitly called out in the beast rider archetype: "The animal chosen as a mount must be large enough to carry the beast rider (Medium or Large for a Small character; Large or Huge for a Medium character)."

Post, by Sean K Reynolds

The player wants to lower a monster's DR. Don't make the player weasel around the wording in-game to accomplish that, you know what they want, don't screw them out of what they're obviously asking for just because their characters don't know what DR is. If you're the GM, you're there to provide fun challenges for the players, you're not their opponent. They have brains, you have brains, everyone use your brains and don't make the combat screech to a halt because you want a player to trip over the wording of an obvious, easy wish.

Re: Jason: Is concealed spellcasting possible with metamagic?

Back to the topic at hand, since the rules are silent here, I think it is well within the GMs purview to impose a penalty to the Spellcraft check to identify a spell without components (V, S, M). Since there is no real increase for spells with just one, I would guess that this penalty is not very large, perhaps only as much as -4.

I agree that would be better. Unfortunately, we didn't do that in the Core Rulebook (partly because the Bestiary wasn't done yet, and partly because we didn't want to refer players to the Bestiary), and when people model a new ability, they usually base it on the existing presentation of a similar ability, which means you're going to get this language weirdness.

I wouldn't double it. Think of it as "this item requires me to hold it in my hand to activate it," and "hand" is a quasi-slot. "Slotless" items are really those that you don't have to manipulate in any way to gain the bonus (luckstone, ioun stone, etc.).

Dervish Dance isn't supposed to reward tricky-thinking two-weapon fighters, after all. None of those three weapons allow a monk to use his level-based unarmed damage; they just do the damage listed on the weapon table. This isn't errata (they were never intended to allow monks to do that, as they can already deal lethal or nonlethal at their discretion), it's a clarification of the use of terms like "with unarmed attacks" in the descriptive text of those three weapons (they aren't unarmed attacks, and mentioning unarmed attacks at all confuses the issue).

As for whether a new ability has a plus or a gp value: the purpose of armor and shields is to protect the wearer against melee and ranged damage. If the new property makes the armor better at doing that, it should be a plus-based property; otherwise, it should be a gp-based property. It gets a little blurry for some of them (energy resistance is gp-based but spell resistance is plus-based), but if the summary of the ability is "this really needs to be an armor property" vs. "this could just as easily be a ring, robe, or necklace, it should be plus-based.

It's deliberate. The celestial and fiendish templates were redesigned to make them simpler to apply, since applying them to summoned monsters during game play is the primary use for them. It also helps to limit the abuse one can heap on the lower level ones—if you want to do some REALLY tactical stuff with summoned monsters, that's an advantage of summoning things like devils and demons and azatas and archons.

That doesn't mean that the PC should have NO control over his summoned monsters, of course. He should be able to direct who the summoned monster attacks, and what attack options the summoned monster uses, and where it attacks from. The GM, of course, has final say in how tactical he wants to let a summon monster spell get, of course.

Exactly. And that was driven home by the fact that once I introduced the feat, everyone took it and a few players were all "I wanna rebuild my character for that feat." Too good.

Dervish Dance does not work if you wield a weapon in your off hand (see the last sentence of the feat description). It's very much meant to be a feat to bolster the one-weapon build, which is, in my opinion, pretty neglected. It's ALSO meant to benefit clerics, bards, and other spellcasters of Sarenrae in particular, who'll want their off hand free for spellcasting anyway.

If you pinpoint an invisible target, you know what square it's in, and can attack that square, with the invis creature getting total concealment.

If you don't pinpoint the target's square, you don't know what square it's in, but you can still pick a square where you think it may be, and attack there. If the invis target IS there, it gets total concealment (just like you had pinpointed its square). If the invis target ISN'T there, the attack misses (there's nothing to hit). If the GM is smart, he'll roll d% whether or not the invis creature is there, so that the player doesn't know if he missed because (1) of the miss chance, or (2) because there's nothing actually there.

AC tapers off compared to attack value because you WANT everyone to be able to hit more, especially as they start getting iterative attacks. If AC didn't taper off, the iterative attacks (and attacks from classes without a 1-for-1 BAB) would fail most of the time.

After all, if you scale monster AC vs. fighter attack roll, the best fighter attack should hit 50% of the time, the first fighter iterative would only hit 25% of the time, and the 2nd fighter iterative would only hit on a 20. And at level 10 the cleric and rogue would be 15% worse than the fighter, with an increasing class disparity the higher levels go.

When a bard activates a bardic performance, he must decide if it's an audio or visual performance—one or the other. It's certainly cool to include what KIND of performance you're doing, be it song or dance or flute or comedy, but that element falls under the aegis of roleplay, not rules.

So Valeros can make a full attack with two swords, or a single attack with either sword; a lion can make a full attack with claw/claw/bite, or a single attack with any one of those attacks.

Jason and I think the "you lose all extraordinary and supernatural abilities that depend on your original form" rule covers it. If you're not in satyr form, you don't get your satyr racial DR.

(Note that it says "form," not "type," so changing form is sufficient.)

Thus, you could use your move action to get into position to line up a target or targets in the case of greater bladed dash, or as Bardez noted, it allows you to cast the spell as part of spell combat, move to your target and attack them and still leave the magus with the rest of his or her full attack.

An attack action is a type of standard action.

Vital Strike can be used in place of an attack action. This means that whenever you take an attack action, you can use Vital Strike instead. An attack action is a type of standard action. While this is nearly identical to Cleave, there are a few subtle differences. Anything that applies to an attack action would apply to a Vital Strike attack, whereas it would not, necessarily, apply to Cleave. The two feats cannot be used in conjunction.

If you have 4 encounters per game night (which is a busy night), that means about 5 games for each level-up. Multiply that by 4 levels (level-up to 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th) means about 20 games before you hit level 5.

Armor spikes are treated as light weapons for the purpose of threatening adjacent squares. Light weapons require the use of limbs, so you would only be able to make attacks with them if you have a free hand. Thus, wielding a two-handed reach weapon would negate your ability to "wield" (and thus threaten with) armor spikes. This isn't necessarily clear in the rules, but I just discussed it with Jason, and we're both on the same page about the intent.

The rend universal monster rule grants the creature an additional damage roll after successfully making two different attacks. Since it's a melee damage roll from a different attack than the first two, it gets Power Attack as well.

The alchemist is a weird kind of variant spellcaster, but he doesn't actually cast spells; he mixes elixirs and uses them to activate his "spells." As such, methods that enhance spellcasting, such as metamagic (or metamagic rods) won't help an alchemist's extracts. They're more or less variant potions, not actual spells.

Elemental touch, while usable by other class, was designed with alchemists in mind. Alchemists can't target other creatures with their extracts, so rather than being a touch spell, it gives the caster a damaging touch attack. Hope that clears it up a bit?

So yep, it's a buff spell. You don't get an attack that first round. You could cast another spell (drink another extract) while it was in effect on you.

Re: Double Barrel Pistol Questions

Comments:

1. It is one action, two attack rolls. I fire as a standard action, it is two attack rolls. If I fire as part of a full-attack action, it is one of those attacks, but two attack rolls.

2. You can use both shots of a double barrel pistol with dead shot. Both attacks take a -4 to the attack roll. Each shot gains each attack roll with the same effect, but with lower accuracy.

3. Tricky. I think this is what I think you are doing. Starting with a double pistol in one hand, firing all but 8 bullets (four attacks, 8 attack rolls) with the double pistol (at base attack plus double barrel pistol penalties at +12/+7/+2/-3 for each) then use the glove of storing to get your second pistol in the off hand (since you can't reload without without a free hand) to get the off-handed weapon attacks (two at +12 and two at +7, just counting base attack and penalties for two-weapon fighting and the double barrel pistol). Of course you would have to drop or put away the first pistol so you could reload the barrel. All of those shots at a misfire of 1-2.

Now all of that follows the letter of the rules...I guess...except for the fact that to pull it off, you rarely have a weapon in each hand, if I'm understanding your thinking clearly. If that's the case, I think I would call shenanigans.

Archetypes apply to a single class.
You can have very similar archetypes for two different classes (and even use the same name), but an individual archetype's writeup always focuses on one class.

So, frex, if your "Magey VonMagerson" archetype swaps out the "familiar" class feature and you'd want sorcerers and wizards to be able to take it, if you were writing it for a book, you'd have to write it up as a sorcerer archetype and then as a wizard archetype--two separate entries.

Air elementals are made of... air, thus they're about the same weight as the ambient air. Thus, they tend to sit in place, or perhaps fall slowly, and probably don't take falling damage under normal circumstances.

I don't see anything in the rules for wild shape, elemental body, spellcasting in general, or supernatural abilities in general that says "this/any spell effect ends when the caster/recipient is unconscious." Thus, the druid stays in wild shape even if KO'd.

Bodyguard is intended to require you only to be adjacent to the ally you're defending, not to require you to threaten their attacker. Requiring you to threaten the attacker makes the feat MUCH less useful, since then you can't block ranged attacks or reach weapons or attacks against targets with concealment or cover or anything else that would prevent an AoO. My intention with tying it to the AoO mechanic was simply to make it an ability you could use more than once per round, rather than wanting to tie it specifically to all the implied mechanics of AoOs. I had thought about just making it an immediate action, but that limits it to once per round and takes your im/swift action. I figured that was an appropriate mechanic for In Harm's Way, but the defensive bonus of AA was modest enough that I thought it entirely fair to not limit it that way.

You make an overrun attack as normal. The feat does nothing unless your combat maneuver check exceeds your opponent's CMD by 5 or more. At that point, the opponent is knocked prone as normal, but you stop (rather than moving through the opponent's space) and can make an immediate unarmed or natural weapon attack against the prone opponent.

Without the feat, the opponent is knocked prone, you move through his space, and you don't get an immediate attack. Likewise, simply moving up and attacking the opponent doesn't knock them prone.

I can't see a lock of hair, even superstrong hair, dealing P or S damage.

As for grappling, it says, "Her hair can manipulate objects (but not weapons) as dexterously as a human hand", which sounds like you certainly could grapple, disarm, steal, and so on with it.

No, natural weapons already have TWF-like math built into them. You're already attacking with two hands at no penalty (better than TWF with a light weapon and the TWF feat), you can't use TWF feats to get extra attacks out of it (mainly because you never get iterative attacks with natural weapons).

"Pinpoint" has a specific meaning in the game: you know what square it's in, so even if you can't see it, you can make an attack into that square (instead of groping around to find it or randomly choosing a square you hope it's in). So it shouldn't tell you what weapon they have (or probably much more than "only taking up one square, probably only two legs."

If you are swallowed, you are restricted in your actions (as per the grapple condition). You also have the option of cutting yourself free (which you don't have for a normal, non-swallow, grapple situation).

The bit about "just try to escape from the grapple" is a reiteration of the normal option for being grappled; it's not limiting your options to just cut-or-escape.

In general, SLAs use the sor/wiz spell level for DCs if the spell is on multiple spell lists, so you should assume that an SLA is arcane unless the source of the ability suggests otherwise (such as a spell that's only on the cleric list, or an SLA from a cleric domain, or uses Wisdom to determine DCs instead of Charisma).

Area effects (effects that say [b]Area[b], or refer to a cone, line, cloud, burst, or spread) usually affect all creatures and objects in the area, unless they explicitly say you can exclude certain targets or that some things are unaffected (like holy smite, which has no effect on good creatures). Targeted effects require you to select a certain number of targets to affect, and regardless of sloppy language (creature/enemy/ally/opponent/foe) should affect the creatures you target.

I talked to Jason (Stephen is out today), and we decided it's okay if you want to deal with bonus feats in the "add new skills and feats" step instead of the "integrate class abilities" step.

I don't think there are any skills that require you to have a particular feat (but there are feats that require skill ranks), so it might be in your best interest to do skills, then feats, but in most cases it doesn't matter and they can be treated as the same step (or "at the same time," as Studpuffin said).

Typically this is done because we trust the GM more to create challenges that are appropriate to their gaming group. I would take that into account when making a simulacrum, and when you make it into a monster with half the HD, the GM gets to design it. Monster design is in the GM purview after all.

This is another balance point of the game. While not explicitly said in the rules, most people know it and take it for granted. We definitely design with these assumptions in mind.

"How to qualify for this feat" is one chunk of rules, "how to use this feat" is a different chunk of rules. If the how-to-use chunk doesn't reference the how-to-qualify chunk, then the how-to-qualify chunk doesn't determine whether or not you can use it.

Post, by Sean K Reynolds

You can use your channel to either activate the grayflame weapon OR to use Channel Smite.

Basically, activating grayflame is a swift action that requires you to spend 1 use of channel energy. The fact that there are other swift-action uses of channel energy doesn't change or augment that.

The them in the second sentence refers to "your mind-affecting spells." Not spells in general. Thus the arcana, as written, and taken as a whole, allows you to affect corporeal undead with your mind-affecting spells as if they were humanoids.

Target typically means someone you want to hit. In most circumstances (except for cases when you are dominated or confused) you get to choose your target and it is typically synonymous with opponent. In this case, if you don't have a second target, you don't have to attack your ally.

To answer the original question, you can gain the benefits of Vital Strike when you take the attack action, that is a standard action where you make one attack. You cannot use it when you take a full-attack action where your make multiple attacks.

Also, keep in mind that while the design and development team does enjoy to interact with all of you, and even give our feedback to rules issues, off-the hip (and after hours) rules discussion by the staff should not be taken as an FAQ or errata for the game as a whole. If you are using random posts to justify your build in Pathfinder Society or as a player in other games…you really should cut that out. Just a bit of friendly advice from this designer.

Threatening with Snap Shot certainly does provide a flanking bonus to your melee teammate. You are 100% correct. But the Snap Shot character isn't getting flanking benefits herself since she isn't making a melee attack.

The rule that a creature under a medium or heavy load cannot fly is a feature that Pathfinder RPG discarded. It does not appear in the Fly skill entry, and the fly spell specifically calls out a second speed for creatures under medium or heavy load.

I have had it pointed out that a mount cannot fly if in medium or heavy armor, and encumberance functions as though it were the equivalent armor. That makes it sound as though the meat of your complaint is still valid, at least for the bat. It could grab you in its mouth and carry you for short distances, but operating as a battle mount might have to wait until it gets another point or two of Strength. This makes the bat no less effective as a melee combatant for your first few levels, though, and as you noted, ant haul can easily overcome the limitation.

Yes, you can take the feat, but it does no good, unless you have a tail. If you are human (no tail) and take the feat, there are ways in which you could gain a tail (including GM fiat) get a tail, hence it is not part of the prerequisites.

Since they don't have verbal components, as long as someone isn't directly able to watch you (to see the telltale signs of casting as mentioned in Jason's super-old forum post on the topic), it's easier to get off a bunch of psychic spells from, say, around the corner without everyone hearing you.
