3 / day

Rules Questions

Possibly the wrong place to ask this, but:

Indirect spoilers for the first two books:

If a character description says:
3/day: Dimension Door, Hideous Laughter
Can he cast them three times each or three spells a day from that list? I always assumed it was the latter, but Kikonu's suggested tactics have him teleporting, hitting the players with more spells, then teleporting again.

Similarly, if an intelligent magic item description says:
3/day: Resist Energy, Remove Paralysis
Can it cast them three times each in a day?

In general each of the abilities listed in such way can be used separately, they do not came from the same pool of daily uses so it's 3 uses of first ability and three uses of the second ability.

The sole exception would be Sorcerer spells which would be listed as (Bestiary 1 Rakshasa example):

Spells Known (CL 7th)
3rd (5/day)—lightning bolt (DC 16), suggestion (DC 16)
2nd (7/day)—acid arrow, invisibility, minor image
1st (7/day)—charm person (DC 14), mage armor, magic missile, shield, silent image

That's what's confusing - they're listed in a way that looks just like that.

For example: Bralani Azata
Spell-Like Abilities (CL 6th)
2/day — lightning bolt (DC 15), cure serious wounds
So if a player summons one, it can fire off two lightning bolts and still cast two cure spells afterwards?

Is there any written confirmation of this, ie that if they have sorcerer or oracle levels, they come from a shared pool, but if they're anything else (eg spell-like), they're from separate pools?

Having levels in Sorc/Oracle (or Bard, Inquisitor, Summoner, whatever) has no direct relevance (e.g. dragons casting spells like a sorcerer)

.

If the header says 'Spell-like abilities', every one of them can be used the indicated times per day.
If the header says 'Spells known', the spells in a line share the slots.

So, your friendly Bralani will be able to toss two Lightning Bolts and still cast both cures.

Not that I'm doubting you, but what is the source of your information?

Sovereign Court Developer

Drejk and Midnight_Angel are correct. Each spell-like ability can be used the listed number of times per day.

The problem comes from using the same language in the stat block for both spell-like abilities and sorcerer spells, but sorcerer/oracle spells function differently, sharing the use slots per day.
