The Pathfinder Arena survey determines which heroes we will include in the heroes' expansion pack. Find it online at the Pathfinder Arena Official Facebook Group!

The core box of the game will feature fourteen monsters and four heroes: Kyra (Human Cleric), Merisiel (Elf Rogue), Valeros (Human Fighter), and Ezren (Human Wizard). We have already revealed all four heroes' miniatures and ten of the fourteen monsters.

The first expansion pack includes two new heroes and new features to enhance the game's longevity and increase the number of strategies to win the game. According to the class, each hero has weaknesses and strengths, which influence the way the character is played in the game. Moreover, each hero has access to exclusive features, including armor, weapons, skills, and magic.

Giochi Uniti and Paizo aim to involve the community as much as possible in the game's creation process. It is just the first survey, but more will follow (e.g. about the monsters' expansion pack).

The range of heroes eligible for the survey is the remaining eight iconic heroes: Fumbus (Goblin Alchemist), Seelah (Human Paladin), Amiri (Human Barbarian), Harsk (Dwarf Ranger), Lem (Halfling Bard), Lini (Gnome Druid), Sajan (Human Monk), and Seoni (Human Sorcerer).

This week we send out the final chapter of The Shroud of Four Silences. For those still experiencing technical difficulties receiving emails, we’ll leave signups open to get these (at a rate of a chapter a day to help you catch up). Additionally, we’ll have an ePub version of this story available here on paizo.com and the Kindle store as soon as possible, and we’ll be doing this again once we work out some of the kinks in the email garden hose, so to speak. LISAVET, WELL-READ ACOLYTE

Lisavet found two callings in the Dawnflower Library. She was not only drawn to the faith of Sarenrae, benevolent goddess of the sun and healing, but also adored the numerous and varied books within the library. Although trained as a healer, she spent most of her time reading adventure stories. When the opportunity came for adventure of her own, Lisavet put her self-doubt aside and embraced her faith, becoming a righteous hero. Lisavet’s adventures are described in The Shroud of Four Silences.

Lisavet is just the sort of person anyone would want to find at a local shrine or hospital: caring, intelligent, and eager to provide whatever assistance she can. Although she puts on a greater show of confidence than she sometimes feels, she knows that Sarenrae will never let her down.

• Having suffered a strange wound that resists ordinary attempts to heal it, the heroes must come to a specialist like Lisavet.
• While perusing an ancient folio, Lisavet discovered a map to a forgotten shrine of Sarenrae in a forlorn section of wilderness. She needs aid to reach it and restore it to its former glory.

Hi! We’re Jasper’s Game Day and we’re here to change the world, one game at a time!

Our journey began back in 2017. After losing two friends to suicide in a ten-month period, our creator, Fenway, teamed up with her mentor, Satine Pheonix, to use TTRPGs to help prevent others from going through similar losses. Partnering with local conventions, they used the games we all love to play to raise money to support local Suicide Crisis Centers to aid with resources and spread awareness.

Since that humble first event, Jasper’s Game Day has grown into an international movement that is raising more money than Fenway and Satine could have imagined. In 2020 alone, over $100,000 dollars has been raised in the name of Jasper’s Game Day for fighting suicide.

While active all 365 days of the year with streams and games, the main event is Jasper’s Game WEEK. This annual event in May has brought together gamers from around the world with guest DMs and players, many of whom are household names in the TTRPG community. When first starting, Jasper’s Game Day focused mainly on Dungeons and Dragons but has since grown to include players of different TTRPGS, including Vampire: The Masquerade, Star Wars, and, of course, Pathfinder and Starfinder. Thanks to our new partnership with Paizo, we look forward to expanding our tables with members of the Pathfinder and Starfinder community.

This month brings you a fantastic new scenario in the form of Pathfinder Society Scenario #2-11: The Pathfinder Trials by veteran author Sean McGowan. Originally intended to be a special interactive for the past year’s convention season, world events had the team reconsider the role of this product. We took the time needed to turn this product into a repeatable scenario geared towards new players and experienced (but still 1st level) Pathfinder players.

During The Pathfinder Trials, a junior group of Pathfinders is set against unique trials from each of the Pathfinder Society’s three deans. The Masters of Scrolls, Spells, and Swords each prepared a challenge catered to their respective schools of tutelage, and it’s up to the PCs to devise a means of overcoming them. Once the PCs complete these challenges, they receive a well-earned rest, as well as one extra chance to prove their skills as Pathfinders.

ELEUKAS, COURAGEOUS GUARD

Eleukas grew up in Otari, working hard in the logging camps and getting to know the townspeople. When he was old enough to join the Otari town guard, even the curmudgeonly Captain Longsaddle couldn’t deny that the muscular lad had martial talent. What he didn’t realize is that Eleukas also has heart. Though unsure of his own abilities, Eleukas joined with his friends to avert a serious threat to Otari, as described in The Shroud of Four Silences.

Eleukas is an excellent example of a local folk hero. He’s willing to raise his magical axe, Visperath, for coin, but he’s more likely to raise it to protect the innocent.

• While the heroes are investigating strange happenings in Otari, Eleukas lends his aid as someone who can make introductions to helpful townspeople and perhaps even convince Captain Longsaddle to overlook well-intentioned misdemeanors.

When the mysterious lighthouse called Gauntlight glows with baleful light, the people of Otari suspect that it’s an ominous prelude to sinister events. Heroes must explore the ruins around the lighthouse and delve into the dungeon levels below. Hideous monsters, deadly traps, and vengeful ghosts all await the heroes who dare to enter the sprawling megadungeon called the Abomination Vaults!

If you are new to Pathfinder or an Adventure Path, welcome! The Abomination Vaults Adventure Path Player's Guide is your spoiler free introduction for getting started. Inside you will find the following three chapters:

1. Coming Together

• The Abomination Vaults Adventure Path begins near the small town of Otari on the southern shore of the Isle of Kortos. A robust and spoiler-free description of the town can be found in this player’s guide. While this gazetteer does mention things that aren’t frequently discussed in polite company (such as the rough crew that hangs out at the Crook’s Nook), the contents of this gazetteer are considered common knowledge among Otari’s citizens. It’s possible for some (or even all) of the heroes to hail from Otari, but that isn’t necessary. Although most of the campaign’s action takes place in the dungeon about a half hour to the north in the swampy Fogfen, the heroes will return to Otari many times and should come to rely on its people.
  The heroes might or might not know each other, but all of them should have a friend in common: the town’s eccentric oddities merchant, Wrin Sivinxi.

2. Cosmic Caravan Pantheon

• As friends of Wrin Sivinxi, the heroes all know that she follows a pantheon of deities collectively known as the Cosmic Caravan. Any hero who wants to can also follow this pantheon. The rules for following a pantheon are set forth on page 92 of Pathfinder Lost Omens Gods and Magic.

3. Otari Gazetteer

• Otari is a thriving, diverse lumber town and trade port with a storied past and its fair share of sinister secrets. Founded by a group of adventurers over 400 years ago, the town has weathered attacks from kobolds and strange monsters, economic woes and windfalls, and cycles of prosperity and strife. Today, the town is a prosperous community and one of the largest settlements along the island’s southern coast, other than the metropolis of Absalom.

While Ruins of Gauntlight contains typical Pathfinder action and adventure, it also presents themes of suicide. Before you begin, understand that player consent (including that of the Game Master) is vital to a safe and fun play experience for everyone. You should talk with your players before beginning the adventure and modify descriptions or scenarios as appropriate.

Planning For The End

The Abomination Vaults Adventure Path takes characters from 1st level to 10th level and concludes at about 11th level. There are certainly opportunities to continue the campaign (such as with the Fists of the Ruby Phoenix Adventure Path, which starts at 11th level and begins in the next volume after Abomination Vaults concludes). As such, keep in mind that if you’ve got your eye on a particular 12th-level feat or 15th-level class feature, it’s not something you’ll likely get the chance to select during the Abomination Vaults Adventure Path.

Today, I’m excited to publicly welcome the newest member of the Organized Play team, Mike Kimmel. Mike’s been one of Organized Play’s most dependable freelancers for years now, and the whole Organized Play team is glad to have him on board. He’s already hard at work on polishing Pathfinder Society Scenario #2-13: A Gilded Test, and you’ll be seeing plenty of his work in the Pathfinder Society line in the future. Take it away, Mike!

Hello! I’m Mike Kimmel, and last week I joined the Organized Play team as the newest Organized Play Developer. I’ve been freelancing for Paizo for the past six years following my Top 4 placement during RPG Superstar 2014. Some of my recent work includes the upcoming Starfinder Society scenario The Vast Experiment: Fast Choices, as well as contributions to the Lost Omens: Pathfinder Society Guide and Starfinder Alien Archive 4. I am also the founder of Freelance Forge, a forum community where current and aspiring freelancers can network and hone their skills.

One of my most memorable experiences working with the Org Play program was volunteering as a GM for GenCon 2018. I got to run seven sessions of the second edition playtest and one interactive special. I also witnessed the debut of my own interactive special, Pathfinder Society 10-00: The Hao Jin Cataclysm. I’ll never forget that event, and I look forward to attending many more conventions in the future, in person and online.

When I’m not working on role-playing games, playing role-playing games, or thinking about role-playing games, I am probably doing something to relax: spending time with my family, reading a book, playing Zelda (again), walking my dogs, or forcing anyone in the radius of my dad joke aura to make Will saves. Over the last few months, we’ve provided a number of new mechanics in the blog to give Game Masters running Otari-based campaigns a few more tricks to add flavor to the region based on the exploits of the heroes in Liane Merciel’s ongoing novella, The Shroud of Four Silences. We’re getting to the end of that tale, with Chapter 11 going out to our mailing list this week. To avoid spoilers, we’re hiding this week’s GM’s Toolkit entry below—keeping it secret, if you will—for only those who know the true villains at the heart of the story or who don’t mind learning it before reading it for themselves. Norgorber's Many Masks

The evil god Norgorber is unusual in that he maintains many guises. His four aspects are Blackfingers, god of alchemy and poison; the Gray Master, god of thievery; Father Skinsaw, god of ritual murder; and the Reaper of Reputation, god of lies and secrets. His worshipers usually follow just one of these aspects, although the heroes in The Shroud of Four Silences discover something that those cultists dedicated to the worship of all four aspects of Norgorber might create.

Norgorber’s worshipers delight in being as crafty as they are cruel, and they might fashion any number of wicked items to further their sinister plans. Followers of Norgorber might create one of these masks, bearing the aspect of Norgorber they worship.

Secret-Keeper’s Mask — Item 3+

Rare, Divination, Enchantment, Invested, Magical

Usage worn; Bulk —
Each of these full-face masks is made of stitched materials—often including humanoid skin—and has a single, bulbous eye. While wearing the mask, you gain a +1 item bonus to Deception checks to Lie and the mask doesn’t impair your vision. The mask can also be activated, with an ability based on its type.

Type Blackfingers; Level 3; Price 60 gp
This featureless mask is made of thin, papery skin. Its single eye is a fragile bubble of venom-filled glass.

Activate [two-actions] Interact (divination); Frequency once per day; Effect You twist the mask’s eye and peer at an object. You know whether the object is poison or has been poisoned, but you don’t learn the number or type of poisons present in the object.

Type Gray Master; Level 5; Price 150 gp
This monochrome mask is made of tattered rags of gray and black cloth and bleached fragments of skin.

Activate [reaction] Interact (illusion, visual); Trigger You succeed on a Thievery check to Steal an item of negligible Bulk; Frequency once per day; Effect You create an illusory duplicate of the item you just stole. This duplicate has the appropriate appearance and weight, but it doesn’t make sounds or generate smells. The illusion vanishes after 10 minutes, or earlier if anyone examines or manipulates the illusory duplicate (such as to try to use it).

Type Father Skinsaw; Level 6; Price 250 gp
This mask is a patchwork of tanned skins, each with a distinctive scar. It is contorted into a caricature of a face with a leering eye.

Activate [reaction] Interact; Trigger You deal persistent bleed damage to a creature; Frequency once per day; Effect The bleeding wound you cause is particularly mutilating. The DC of flat checks to recover from the persistent bleed damage is increased by 2, and the target creature has a –2 status penalty to Deception, Diplomacy, and Performance checks while it is bleeding and for 1 minute after it ceases bleeding.

Type Reaper of Reputation; Level 3; Price 60 gp
This mask is made of gray and black tiles sewn together. It has a messy, inky spiral over the mouth.

Activate [one-action] Interact (auditory, linguistic); Frequency once per day; Effect You touch the mask’s spiral and identify a target creature within 30 feet. For the next 10 minutes, any normal speech you utter can, at your discretion, be inaudible to all creatures except the target creature, who can hear you clearly regardless of ambient sound so long as it is within 1 mile. This ability doesn’t silence magical words, such as the verbal component of spellcasting or commands to activate magic items.

This week, we conclude our preview of the forthcoming Pathfinder Battles: Darklands Rising set of prepainted plastic miniatures from our partners at WizKids. Before we get into looking at the final figures in the set, I wanted to provide an update on Darklands Rising’s release. Due to a number of logistical issues, some game distributors have not received their orders of Darklands Rising, so WizKids has pushed the release date back 2 weeks to February 3, 2021. This should give the remaining product time to make it to distributors and then to retail stores in time for everyone to have the same street date. We hope this won’t cause anyone any problems, and thank the community for your understanding.

And now, we delve back into the bowels of the earth to reveal the final batch of figures in this amazing set! We’ve shown off the many Darklands denizens like drow, deep gnomes, and urdefhans in the set, but none of the fey, so let’s remedy that, shall we? Here’s we’ve got the Leprechaun, Grodair, Lurker in Light, and Norn. Of these, none is really linked heavily to the Darklands, but they can nevertheless serve as potential foes or allies of adventurers in just about any campaign, including those set beneath Golarion’s surface. The Leprechaun is a Small common figure, the Grodair a Medium common, Lurker in Light a Small uncommon, and the Norn is a Large rare.

Fey are generally represented as the guardians or custodians of the natural world, so it’s fitting that we also included the Arboreal Regent in this set to accompany them. This Huge uncommon figure can serve both as a treefolk character as well as an animated or awakened tree (which isn’t the same thing!) Similarly, the Wood Giant, also a Huge uncommon figure, can serve as friend or foe depending on what the party wants to do with the forests it calls home. The decidedly less amiable Cavern Troll, a Large uncommon figure, serves a less foliated, more crystalline foil to his fellow giants, and fits right in among the Darklands’ many threats.

Rounding things out in Darklands Rising are two rather frightening animals, two classic fantasy beasts, and a weird aquatic aberration. They are the Emperor Cobra (Large uncommon), Giant Toad (Large uncommon), Leucrotta (Large uncommon), Peryton (Medium common), and Quoppopak (Large uncommon).

And that, as they say in show business, is a wrap! Pathfinder Battles: Darklands Rising is available for preorder now and will be available everywhere miniatures are sold on February 3. Next week, we’ll take off for the far horizons of distant worlds as we take our first look at Starfinder Battles: Planets of Peril, the first full set of prepainted plastic miniatures based on the Starfinder game and setting. Hello friends far and wide!

We are very excited to be given the opportunity to partner with Paizo, and knew we had to try something new with it, though at that stage we were unsure what that would be. After we had met with the Paizo team for the first time, and the creative juices were flowing, the idea of doing something big for Pathfinder Second Edition kicked in. We had an interesting thought: what if you could truly, completely customize your dice to your character? Not only by selecting dice colors that match the color palette of your character but also unique glyphs to represent their class, their abilities, their weapons, and their choice of spells.

Introducing Adventurer’s Curated Dice Collection by Level Up Dice - a customizable dice set that fits all of your character needs. A way to not only purchase the specific dice you need to make the most out of your hard earned gold, but also a way to curate a set for your wizard with force damage d4’s and fire damage d6’s, or your ranger with their sword d12 and bow d8 (including the deadly d10!)

The first step in fleshing out this idea was taking in the sheer scale of this project. Level Up Dice decided: if we’re going to create something completely new, we have to do this the right way. Now, to do this and to limit risk we need to use a material we’re familiar with and is highly customizable, which is where we decided on aluminum. It allows us to make the 200+ highly detailed glyphic designs we need to implement this new system properly. This also contributes to working toward the goal of doing this across multiple materials... (hint hint)

Alex’s rogue set

To show you exactly what we mean, we’ve taken Alex, the CEO and mastermind behind LUD, and made a set specifically for his rogue he’s playing: two rogue d20’s, three precision damage d6’s to cover the sneak attack, and two knife d4’s for their dual weilding daggers. It's all he needs, no fluff, no dice sitting in the corner of the tray unused!

Once this process was extended to the whole team the excitement was palpable, and we will be sharing our teams sets with you all very soon! For now, the one thing we found incredible and something we thought would get you excited is that we have a potential of over 8,000 dice to choose from in this initial launch alone! Below, we’ve displayed a small selection of these dice for you to see!

With so many options, we knew almost immediately that the best way to bring this to all of you would be with a Kickstarter. It was the only way to properly manage the myriad factors in a project of this scale. So, what now?

Greetings gamers and non-binary beings, and hello to the extended Paizo family and community. This is Patrick, the GM and podcast host of Cosmic Crit LLC, and I’m excited to officially announce that we signed our licensing partnership with Paizo!

What exactly is Cosmic Crit?

Cosmic Crit started with six friends back in 2016 as an online Pathfinder First Edition gaming group. When Starfinder launched in 2017, we recorded our Dead Suns campaign. On it we had Drew playing as Gnak Sizrack, Gibert playing as ANDIS-147, Myles as Rami, Rebecca as Alyndra Vallis and Tyler as Edrass Vaaranas. Enjoy this standalone encounter inspired by these events, which you can add to any Pathfinder second edition game, whether it’s one set in Otari (like Troubles in Otari, the Pathfinder Beginner Box, or this month’s debut volume of the Abomination Vaults Adventure Path), somewhere else in the Age of Lost Omens setting, or a campaign of your own creation.

Heaving Kobolds — Moderate 4

This encounter takes place underground, in or near kobold warrens. An ogre long ago moved in with the kobolds, demanding food and tribute from the smaller creatures. The kobolds have coddled the ogre somewhat, as they realize the brute provides a good defense of their territory, but they don’t realize that the ogre views the kobolds as ammunition rather than allies.

Creatures: This fight likely begins when the kobolds slink out of hiding to attack, but the ogre hurler joins the battle quickly, tossing the kobolds at intruders before entering melee. The kobolds fight bravely while trying to avoid being the closest one to the ogre. The overconfident ogre fights until slain, but the kobolds break and run as soon as the ogre falls.

OPM Musings

But I would walk 500 miles and I would walk 500 more…

With the calendar turned to 2021 and vaccines starting to rollout, we’ve got a chance that some of us will actually get to travel to conventions. Unfortunately, we aren’t quite at the point where it is safe to attend events in person. So for the next few months, our presence will remain digital. We’re in talks with a few shows about being virtual guests and will let you know more as soon as we make the final determinations. If you have a digital show between now and April and would like some organized play participation, please email the team at organizedplay@paizo.com with your event particulars.

Not traveling gives us a few more months of internal process smoothing and a chance to finalize a few projects. In addition, Alex’s first anniversary at Paizo approaches. His presence on the team brought much needed stability to program functions and the venture-officer support. I look forward to doing even more now that we’ve acclimated him into the program. Most of the planned projects involve behind the scenes activities, but we hope that they make the forward-facing aspects even better for our community.

Alright, that’s enough musing from me. Without further ado, let’s get to the list of updates for this month!

New OP Developer

As we announced in last week’s blog, Mike Kimmel has joined the team as our newest developer! A prolific Paizo freelancer, Mike wrote many beloved adventures for Organized Play, such as Starfinder Society Scenario #1-22: The Protectorate Petition and Pathfinder Society Scenario #7–10: The Consortium Compact, as well as backmatter for Pathfinder Adventure Path #135: Runeplague and parts of several Lost Omens rulebooks. He also founded the Freelance Forge community, a forum for current and prospective RPG freelancers. You’ll hear more from him next week, but we’re thrilled to bring him on board and can’t wait to see what our fully-staffed team produces going forward!

Digitization

We originally set the final day for Fame purchases in Pathfinder Society as December 31st. I’m happy to say we all took a much needed holiday break. This does make getting final decisions through the pipeline a bit problematic. So we decided to push the deadline out to January 31st, 2021. This is it, though, the final extension. Once February hits, Fame will be gone as a purchasable currency.

We know there are still a few items that we haven’t imported to either AcP or faction reputation or game rewards. We took the transition process slowly to make sure we’re doing it right and not breaking anything more than we had to. Some of the outstanding items, such as a method of bequeathing rewards between character and alternative methods to revive dead characters, are questions we will answer in the next few weeks and will share with you once we make decisions.

Sanctioning

Right before Christmas, we announced sanctioning for the latest Pathfinder adventure, Troubles in Otari, which offers a great transition from Beginner Box play to utilizing the full Pathfinder ruleset.

We’re also excited to announce that the Starfinder Society Additional Resources have now been updated! This update includes the character options from the Threefold Conspiracy adventure path, which were accidentally passed over when we released the chronicles.

Looking forward, work on Pathfinder Adventure: The Slithering nears completion and we hope to upload sanctioning before the end of the month. After that, we’ll shift gears to rulebooks, focusing on Starfinder Alien Archive 4 and the upcoming Pathfinder Lost Omens: Ancestry Guide (releasing in February), before we jump back into adventures. We’ll keep you all updated as we have news to share.

GM Achievements

Whether stars, novas, or glyphs, achieving a 5 ranking in any program involves a substantial amount of time. To achieve the 5th milestone, a GM must run 150 games, of which at least 50 must be unique scenarios and 10 special scenarios, as well as run between one and three games for venture-captains (program dependant). A conservative estimate of the time needed to reach the 5th milestone is 650 hours!

One GM received their fifth star in the last month. We had no one reach 5 Novas or 5 Glyphs.

Conventions

In their holiday message and update, Gen Con announced that they were postponing badge registration and event submission until they have a better idea of what the year will bring. Once we know their plan, we’ll have more info to share about volunteering for that event. We’ll have information on volunteering for other Paizo-sponsored conventions soon as well. There are just a few questions left to answer before we are ready to push go!

Otherwise, we have a few events on the calendar already to look forward to in 2021! If you don’t see a convention on the list that you think should be there, contact the event organizer and ask them to register their event for organized play support.

Happy New Year, Pathfinders! While it’s been nice to have a few weeks to spend with our families, we’re all back in the office* and ready to kick 2021 into high gear. What better way to usher in a follow-up to the year that shall not be named than with a life-size goblin figure from our partners at WizKids?

News of this monster** leaked over the summer, and we were coy about it in large part because we weren’t quite sure exactly how it was going to turn out. But WizKids took the entire pickle jar with this one, and we’re finally thrilled to be able to show it off.

While I could post some digital mock-ups of the goblin like we do with many of our miniature previews, that would hardly do justice to this marvel, so I asked Paizo’s Chief Creative Officer and Publisher, Erik Mona, to get a few pictures of the lone copy of the life-size goblin we have in the office*, which he’s jealously guarded since he first got ahold of it in September.

While goblins don’t write, that won’t stop them from reading, especially not from a book with such handsome illustrations accompanying the thought-stealing words.

And they say goblins don’t like dogs.***
Goblins are known for drinking or eating just about anything, so it’s no surprise our little buddy ushered in the new year with a few bottles of “goblin fire red”.****

This 3-foot-tall goblin figure is available now. We haven’t gotten them in the warehouse yet, and since they’re larger than anything we’ve ever shipped out before, we aren’t offering the ability to preorder them until we can provide accurate shipping costs on each order. We’ll be sure to let folks know when our allotted tribe arrives for not-setting-things-on-fire so that you can order them and put an end to their really-nothing-is-on-fire-we-swear shenanigans.

When your little bundle of mayhem shows up at your door (whether you order from us, your local retailer, or WizKids directly), be sure to post your own pictures of him among your pets, books, and adult beverages (for scale, of course) on social media and tag our official accounts. We might even collect the best ones and show them off in a gallery of gobliny goodness at a later date.

Welcome to 2021! How about a playtest to start off with a bang? After not participating in the Pathfinder Secrets of Magic playtest and reading the feedback from our players and GMs, we put our heads together to come up with a way to engage our Organized Play community that worked within the Pathfinder Society framework. We settled on a model based on the Starfinder Society method that will allow our community to participate in the Pathfinder Guns & Gears playtest (see the announcement here). This framework works within established Society guidelines, doesn’t leave credit on unusable characters, and encourages players to get involved. We believe this method is flexible enough to use for future playtests and will add a section to the Guides to Organized Play to provide guidance to players and GMs.

But enough with the whys and wherefores. Let’s get to the details:

Playtest Period: Pathfinder Society participation in the Guns & Gears playtest runs from publication on January 5 to February 5, 2021. Once this period has expired, players can no longer use the gunslinger or inventor playtest classes until their publication in a future Pathfinder product.

How It Works: We're opening up Society play for the playtest classes via the use of custom created characters that operate much like our pregenerated characters. We believe this should encourage players to test the waters with custom builds, be it with current scenarios or through our growing stable of repeatable options.

Creating a Playtest Character: Prior to playing a scenario during the playtest period, a player can determine if they want to playtest either of the new classes. The character must have all levels in a single playtest class, and not take archetypes. Although archetypes are important for the playtest as a whole, we're limiting play to single classes in the Organized play portion of the playtest for simplicity. Depending on the tier of the scenario, the player can then use a 1st-, 3rd-, or 5th-level character using the eligible playtest classes and created using the following guidelines.

• 1st Level: The character can be made using the character creation rules presented in the Pathfinder Core Rulebook and Guide to Organized Play: Pathfinder Society.
• 3rd Level: This character follows the same rules as above, except they can select one 2nd-level and two 1st-level permanent items. In addition, the player can spend up to 25 gp on other available equipment.
• 5th Level: This character follows the same rules as above, except they can select one 4th-level, two 3rd-level, one 2nd-level, and two 1st-level permanent items. In addition, the player can spend up to 50 gp on other available equipment.

Credit: Choose which of your characters will receive the credit at the beginning of the adventure. The credit earned for playing a Guns & Gears playtest character follows the same rules and guidelines as applying credit for a pregenerated character, presented in the Applying Credit section of the Player Basics page of the Guide to Organized Play: Pathfinder Society.

With all this in mind, we encourage our players to take an active part in the Guns & Gears playtest, both by sharing your opinions online in the playtest forums and by completing the playtest surveys. We hope that by opening up the means in which players can create and customize characters for the playtest, that we can see some unique and fun builds using these new classes and that such tests will provide the design team with priceless field-agent feedback!

Over the past couple months, there’s been a lot of speculation about what our next book might be, and what classes and rules might be contained within its pages. Wonder no more! It is my pleasure to announce Pathfinder Guns & Gears, slated for release in late fall of 2021.

Golarion is a world of magic and mystery, but it’s also a world of clockwork soldiers, pistol-twirling pirates, and marvelous innovations. With gnome tinkers in Absalom, clockwork mages in New Thassilon, dwarf snipers in Alkenstar, and the gun mages of distant Arcadia, Golarion offers a wide array of character concepts that haven’t been supported in Pathfinder Second Edition until now. Guns & Gears will include rules for siege engines, firearms, clockwork inventions, and vehicles unlike anything released so far. On top of that, we’ll be introducing two new classes, both of which you’ll be able to see in this month’s playtest.

The first class marks the return of a Pathfinder First Edition favorite. As many of you have probably guessed, the gunslinger has returned! This is a brand-new version of an old favorite: the gunslinger has been rebuilt from the ground up with new subclasses and abilities unique to Pathfinder Second Edition, including a sniper subclass specializing in devastating opening attacks. Bonus points for those of you who might not be as enthused about having firearms in your home games: we’re playtesting the gunslinger with built-in options for replacing firearms with crossbows. Now, your snipers and drifters can find their place in any campaign! And no, playing a character with this option won’t require a feat or archetype!

The gunslinger is joined by the first class entirely new and unique to Pathfinder Second Edition: the inventor. Master gadgeteers, inventors can interact with mechanical devices in the heat of combat to influence the direction of the fight, leverage their powerful innovations to deal out devastating attacks, or transform themselves into unbreakable armored bulwarks. Other inventors might prefer to instead rely on their trusty clockwork companions to hold the line while these PCs use their skills and cunning to heal or support the party.

With the launch of today’s playtest, you’ll be able to check both of these classes out for yourself and see what they bring to the game! We’re excited to hear your thoughts and insights over the next month as we work to make these new classes the best they can be.

Happy holidays, one and all! Whether you're celebrating the season, stuck working, or enjoying business mandated days off, I don't think it's an exaggeration to say we could all use a bit of festive cheer this year. Winter traditions range from the sweet to the downright malevolent (check out Krampus in our upcoming Bestiary 3), but by far one of the strangest is the Welsh tradition of the Mari Lwyd. This spooky, shrouded creature has a horse's skull for a head. It shows up either during Christmas or the New Year—depending on how much the local church freaks out about its presence—and carols at the doorways to peoples' houses, demanding entrance using Welsh rhymes. Those who let the Mari Lwyd inside must offer the creature hospitality, usually in the form of alcohol and cheese. (Golarion scholars are still debating the absolute definition of “cheese”, but the general rule is that if you have to ask if something counts, it doesn't.)

Of course, most people don't want to give up their holiday booze and cheese to a creepy skull-horse! Those who seek to deny the Mari Lwyd entrance must sing back, telling it to leave. The festive Welsh rap battle, known as Pwnco, continues until one party runs out of ideas and is defeated. Should the Mari Lwyd lose, it will be on its way. If it wins, the household invites it in, but only—most critically—after the occupants make it promise to behave. Otherwise, the creature parties too hard, wrecking the place in a joyous frenzy.

Many Pathfinder monsters are wicked or hostile, but the Mari Lwyd is simply out to enjoy the season. Are your characters and players up to challenge this frightening being to a contest of rhymes? Or would they throw a Kraft Single at it and hope it goes away?

Mostly Harmless The Mari Lwyd is out simply to enjoy the season. The Mari Lwyd's attacks have the nonlethal trait when attacking creatures, unless those creatures attempt a hostile action on the Mari Lwyd first.

Persistent Wassailing The Mari Lwyd cannot be disrupted by common means. It always knows if a building is truly unoccupied or if the occupants can speak and hear and are merely refusing to sing back, and it is immune to silence and similar effects of up to 5th level.

Melee [one-action] jaws +24 (magical, reach 10 feet), Damage 3d10+10 piercing

Melee [one-action] hoof +24 (agile, magical, reach 10 feet), Damage 3d8+10 bludgeoning

Pwnco [three-actions] The Mari Lwyd begins a rhyming contest, requesting entrance to a closed home, tavern, or other building that has occupants who can respond in it. It rolls a Performance check. Before the Mari Lwyd's next turn, one occupant must respond to the Mari Lwyd’s request by spending three actions to Perform a song of their own. The DC for the respondent’s song is equal to the result of the Mari Lwyd’s Performance check. If the building is occupied and no one responds, this has the effects of a critical failure.

Critical Success The respondents win the Pwnco, causing the Mari Lwyd to depart.

Success The response is good, and the Pwnco continues. The Mari Lwyd must use Pwnco again on its next turn. It takes a –2 circumstance penalty to its Performance check or increases its current circumstance penalty by 2, whichever is worse.

Failure The respondents lose the Pwnco! The Mari Lwyd demands hospitality, causing the door to unlock and open and any barriers at the door to move out of the way. If the door is magically sealed, the Mari Lwyd attempts to counteract the effect (counteract level 11, counteract modifier +22). If no occupant of the building offers the Mari Lwyd alcohol or cheese before the start of its next turn and demands that it behave itself, the Mari Lwyd can use Festive Rampage at the start of its next turn.

Critical Failure As failure, but due to the ineptitude of the response, the Mari Lwyd counteracts magical effects with a counteract level of 15 and modifier of +30, and it must be offered twice as much alcohol or cheese.

Festive Rampage [free-action] Requirements The Mari Lwyd enters a building after winning the Pwnco, and was not both told to behave itself and offered alcohol or cheese; Effect The Mari Lwyd flies into a destructive celebratory rampage. As long as the Mari Lwyd remains in the building, it gains resistance 10 to all damage and its strikes ignore 10 Hardness. The Mari Lwyd loses the benefits of this ability if it attacks a living creature, and typically smashes furniture instead.
