Okay, but not Great

3/5

I haven't used Giant Lairs much, but it did come in handy during a certain portion of Rise of the Runelords. One side of the map is the interior of a giant keep, complete with massive chairs (2x2), beds (3x2), and tables (8x2)! In Pathfinder terms, it's sized appropriately for Large-size creatures (ogres, hill giants, etc.) but would still be too small for Huge and bigger creatures. Still, it appropriately puts things in perspective for PCs who dare intrude. The layout is done well, with a massive meeting hall, a common sleeping room, a king or queen's quarters, etc. I'm less impressed with the other side, which depicts what I guess is an outdoors camp in the wilderness and a cave leading into a hillside where goods are stored. The exterior part of the camp is pretty much just boulders and trees like in a dozen other flip-mats, and there's not much particularly "giant" in the cave portion. The sheer size of giants come alive when we see "normal" things (furniture, doorways, etc.) sized for them, so I would much rather have had another building interior--lots of variations and possibilities could easily be imagined.

One good side and one meh side leads to a "shrug" evaluation--if you plan on having a lot of giants as enemies in a campaign, this could be useful (but it's not essential).

Too small for giants!

2/5

THE GOOD:
The giant lair side is pretty usable for a few occasions.
It can even be combined with the "Cave Chambers" and "Cave Tunnels" map packs.

THE BAD:
The fortress side is too orderly and too small for a giant tribe - luckily the "Bigger Basic Flip Mat"
http://paizo.com/products/btpy9ds5?Pathfinder-FlipMat-Bigger-Basic
out in june will fill that gap.

THE UGLY:
So far the fortress side is not appearing in the Giantslayer AP
(at least not in Part 1 and 2)which would make it more useable.

Announced! Cover image and description are not final.

Will there be a specific tie-in with two Giantslayer combat locations?

I'm really hoping one of these sides will be a Storm or Cloud Giant Lair (Undersea Cavern or Cloud castle). There are several gaming maps/tiles out there that can make passable Hill, Stone, Frost or Fire Giant lairs, but none for the more exotic giant types. (Maybe if I said pretty please?) :-)

I kind of HOPE they do Frost and Fire Giant Lairs and then tie in with the map pack, Giant Halls! Showing the Hallways of both Giant Lairs! Now that would be SWEET! "Hey just a suggestion"

I like the idea of this even if it looks a little small for giants. ;-)

Do these places appear anywhere in the Giantslayer AP?

The first image looks like a part of that giant training camp...

Neither appeal in terms of giants. Fort way to small to manuevere through. Not really sure the general size of a flipmat works for non medium liars. Not being overly critical. A decent flipmat for huge giants would be unwieldy for most tables!!

Not bad, though it appears the first side could have been pushed out a few squares, losing nothing but some (largely useless) rock and snow squares. Still, the border provides a very nice sense of place.

Definitely will buy one hardcopy. Not reusable enough for buying the PDF. I'd like to see far more generic maps..indoor and out. Camp sites, forests, maybe some non giant goblin caves.

Are there ever any package offers with paizo maps to include the print version and the pdf? If I could buy both versions for a discounted price I would buy both. I love the big printed versions but having the flexibility of the pdf on the ipad or whatever or even just for prep would be sweet if I felt like I wasn't have to buy the same thing twice.

Pathfinder Maps subscribers receive a free digital copy of the maps when the print version ships; otherwise, we do not offer a bundle deal.

That's a GREAT reason to subscribe then, eh? Thanks for the fast info, I didn't know, but that's exactly the kind of thing I was hoping for.

This flip-mat is used in part #4 of the "Doomsday Dawn" playtest.

This will certainly help sales. ;-)

But wouldn't February be a bit late for the playtest?
