A fun break from dungeons

4/5

Recently I had to improvise a session's worth of adventure in a long-running campaign, and had no idea what to do. Looking at my shelves, I spotted my never-before-used [i]Tournament[i] map pack and decided to go with a local festival and tournament. It turned out to be great fun, and the map pack provided plenty of good activities for the PCs to participate in. There's a fenced off area for some (wooden) sword fighting, a long area archery range, a field for jousting, tents that can be flavored at stalls or games, and wooden stands for the audience to sit and watch. An interesting feature I've never seen in other map packs is that many of the tiles have arrows that show how they're designed to fit with others--quite handy. Admittedly, tournaments aren't likely to come up that often in most campaigns, but this map pack is certainly fit for purpose.

I was just watching A Knight's Tale a couple of days ago. It might be interesting to drop a similar side-story (or, with the right PC, make a character goal) into a campaign.

In any event, a tournament makes a nice break from dungeon-crawling and is chock full of role-playing opportunities.

How many cards are used to make the combat arena?

I was thinking a gladiator arena would be a good idea for a flip-mat, with the arena on one side and gladiator/monster pens on the other.

The combat arena in this case is an above ground, fenced off region. It takes up four tiles.

As for your other thought.. you might be very pleased with our upcoming schedule.

Excellent! And when might we hear more about the upcoming schedule?

So if I want a gladiatorial type map, should I be holding off? :)
