Pathfinder Tales: Starspawn

Behind the Book—Starspawn

If you ever get the chance to meet Wendy Wagner in person, you'll likely come away a little dazzled by the joyful energy she projects. It's practically impossible to not to get swept up in her enthusiasm about any topic you happen to latch on to, be it a favorite recipe or a fantastic horror flick. Whatever the project, Wendy is sure to bring a real passion to it.

Behind the Book—Liar's Bargain

It's no secret that I find Tim Pratt hilarious. I first got a taste of his snarky humor back in 2012 in his first Pathfinder Tales novel, City of the Fallen Sky—and Skiver remains one of my favorite supporting characters—but it was in 2013's Liar's Blade that he introduced the charming con man Rodrick and his talking sword Hrym and won my heart forever.

Pathfinder Tales: Pirate's Prophecy

Behind Pirate's Prophecy

See, Chris is one of those authors that editors like me dream about. Not only is he a fabulous writer, perfectly balancing action and character development, but he also lives and breathes Pathfinder. He knows Golarion inside and out, and has a mastery of the rules that never ceases to amaze me. (Seriously, if you only knew the number of times he's brought up an interesting corner case or rules exploit that caused hours of discussion among the designers and developers...) Combined, those two aspects of his writing make his books a delight to read, both as a reader and as a gamer. How would naval combat work in Pathfinder? What kinds of magical defenses would a Chelish ship have? How could a naga best disguise herself as human? How might a sorcerer use magic to infiltrate a coven of paranoid witches? Chris uses the rules of magic not just as a storyteller looking to forward a plot, but as a person living in that world would, which means there's always something I can take away from his books for use at the gaming table.

For those of you that are big fans of monsters like me, paging through a bestiary is always a delight. While we pull many of our devious and dangerous creatures from folklore, we also draw from pop culture from time to time. Many of us here are fond of horror movies (and monster movies), and it's no small surprise that a number of our monsters are inspired by the movies we so love.

A Farewell to Web Fiction

For the last five years, Wednesdays have held a special place on this blog. Every Wednesday, it was our distinct pleasure to present a new chapter of serial Pathfinder web fiction. Some stories were from authors you already knew, tied into the latest Pathfinder novels. Others were from first-time Pathfinder authors, trying out new characters in front of a live audience—the entire internet.

Hell Unleashed: 10 Infernal Secrets

Just in time for the Hell's Rebels and Hell's Vengeance Adventure Paths, Pathfinder Campaign Setting: Hell Unleashed hits later this month. For this entry into the Unleashed series, Jerome Virnich and I broadened the book's focus to encompass more than just dragons, just undead, or just any one creature type. Instead, we investigate a spectrum of Hell's servants, be they immortal fiends, damned mortals, or more terrible things in-between. Also expect a few other nasty tricks you've never seen in an Unleashed book before.

Four Tales, Ten Heroes

Last year the Pathfinder Society Organized Play campaign introduced a new system for sanctioning Pathfinder Tales novels. Rather than create a Chronicle sheet for each new book, we introduced the "Pathfinder Tales, Volume IV Chronicle sheet," so named because it represented the fourth distinct set of four Pathfinder Tales novels. This means a player only needs to print the Chronicle sheet once to enjoy the benefits of reading four books. As has always been the case, a player must bring a printed or digital (legally obtained and including a watermark indicating such) book to a sanctioned Pathfinder Society event to unlock a novel's Chronicle sheet boon.

Pathfinder Legends: A Visual Companion

Right after the debut Pathfinder Legends full-cast audio drama was released, my wife and I got stuck in an unexpected traffic snarl (which shouldn't have been too surprising, living in Seattle, and all). To kill the time, I put on the CD, and my wife—Shelyn bless her—obliged me by listening. It didn't take very long before she was getting into the story and following closely. There were a few instances when she made me pause playback, however, so that I could explain what certain locations, creatures, and characters looked like. It hit me then that not everyone listening to Pathfinder Legends may play Pathfinder or be familiar with some of the fantasy tropes that those of us who've been playing D&D or variants thereof for decades can sometimes take for granted. One of the reasons the audio drama is so captivating is that it doesn't include a lot of exposition dumps or narration, meaning some of the physical descriptions one might expect in a novel or RPG experience just aren't there.

Mythender in Golarion

One of the great things about working at Paizo is the after-work gaming culture. Sure, there are home games, but there are also one-shot rounds of RPGs that I might not have tried otherwise. What's more, they're run by GMs who are passionate about sharing their latest non-Pathfinder discoveries. A little more than a month ago, Paizo editor Ryan Macklin decided to run a game of Mythender, a roleplaying game about killing gods. That's right, the characters are Mythenders, powerful heroes that straddle the line between mortality and the divine in their quest to rid the world of all Myths. The game's website describes it in better and greater detail, but suffice it to say it's an intense, action-packed experience that involves handfuls of dice, encourages over-the-top descriptions, and is well suited to heavy metal background music.

Pathfinder Adventure Path #76: The Midnight Isles (Wrath of the Righteous 4 of 6) (PFRPG)

Notoriously Good

In this volume of the Wrath of the Righteous Adventure Path the PCs journey to the Abyss at the behest of Queen Galfrey to get to the bottom of the sinister plots before them. While there the PCs visit the Midnight Isles where they have to gain notoriety in order to obtain a meeting with the realm's ruler—Nocticula, demon lord of assassins, darkness, and lust. Even though Nocticula allows nearly anyone into her realm, not all of the denizens there are going to be happy to see the PCs poking around the Abyss. Though this animosity might make things more difficult for the PCs, it certainly helps them gain notoriety. Getting into fights with demons, openly showing affiliation to lawful or good deities and organizations, and competing in blood sports all helps earn notoriety. For example, the PCs can earn a solid chunk of notoriety if they enter the arena of Battlebliss and defeat its reigning champion Gelderfang. Can the PCs pilot a safe course through the intrigues of the Midnight Isles to achieve victory? Until you can get your hands on Pathfinder Adventure Path #76: The Midnight Isles to find out, enjoy these fine illustrations.

Misfit Love—Kamadan CR 4

Misfit Love Tuesday, November 29, 2011 Shhhhh... Don’t tell anyone, but here at Paizo we love our classic and misfit monsters. There is a tendency to look back at some of the oddball monsters that popped up in the sources of our youth and lament on how strange or even dumb they are. We take a different tact. Instead we revel in their strange and iconic natures. Any chance we get, we look for reason why even the most inexplicable monsters might exist in a fantasy world. ... If you’re a fan of...

The Ironroot Deception—Chapter One: The Snare

The Ironroot Deceptionby Robin D. Laws ... Chapter One: The SnareGad feels the roughness of the burr-oak's bark as its branch constricts tighter around his ankles. Blue eyes sear out at his elven captor. ... The tree that dangles him stands at the edge of the Shudderwood. Its roots snake through a weed-choked...
