Confessions of a Recovering Paizo Blog Addict

When the Paizo Blog first started back in spring 2007, I was new to the Pathfinder fan community, and to be honest, Pathfinder wasn't even a thing. I rarely read it, because wasn't quite sure what the people who made my favorite magazines thought they were doing making D&D content that wasn't officially approved and licensed as canon and therefor allowable in my game (yeah, I was one of those gamers). I read the blog occasionally, but that was it.

Yo, Scurvy Dog, I Heard You Like Villains...

Yarrr! Pirate sounds and words! Yarrr! Dear readers, before we start looking at cards from Pathfinder Adventure Card Game—Skull & Shackles Adventure Deck 2: Raiders of the Fever Sea, I want to take a couple of moments to share some thoughts about the comments on my last blog. I'm sort of curmudgeonly for a woman in her twenties, so some of these thoughts may seem a bit harsh, but deep down, I'm actually a marshmallow. If I had more coffee in my system, all my thoughts would be rainbows and kittens, but alas, I'm out of java.

Pathfinder Tales: Stalking the Beast

Gaming as Storytelling

Writing and gaming are inextricably linked for me, so I suppose it's little wonder that I ended up authoring game books. I've been playing various roleplaying games since junior high, starting with Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, and I soon saw that one of the biggest differences between a good and a passable GM is the ability to spin an exciting yarn. Gamemastering isn't just about knowing the rules—to be honest, I've always been a little loose in that regard. I think it's more important to be able to vividly describe things and to impart a sense of forward momentum—to know when to run with the die roll, and when to fudge things.

... Illustration by Jon Hodgson ... The Unluckiest Owlbear Monday, February 22, 2009I'm not sure when it happened, but at some point along the way, the owlbear kind of ended up being the official Kingmaker mascot. Sure, the PCs will be facing evil fey, lizard and frog men, undead monstrosities, bandits, trolls, giants, dragons, and worse during this Adventure Path, but they'll also be facing a lot of owlbears. Some of which are really rather memorable. ... Anyway, once we realized how...

Home for the Holidays Wednesday, December 23, 2009With most of the Paizo editorial staff being transplants from across the country, the holidays tend to be the one time of the year where we put aside talk of goblins and statblocks and deadlines for a few days (or at least try to).
