He stood quiet while everyone yelled at each other with swords drawn.
Stand down. I trust her. Let us return to the taproom and find this war cleric. This prisoner is a spineless snot, throwing poisoned spiders at us. Is that a crime here, attempting to injury an inn employee? I think he is being used as a pawn in Molok's mystery third person idea. If he cannot provide any useful information I would like him punished to the full extent of the laws of the inn, or make up some laws to punish him by. New law for throwing poisoned spiders at your inn keeper.
Death stare at the prisoner.
I believe you are the now on my s+~@ list.

The guards take the merchant into custody and Chalaska as well as the group returns to the taproom. The patrons are slim and with the order being that no one leaves the inn until things are settled most keep to their rooms. However the war cleric is easily spotted, sitting in the taproom having supper.

Addressing the war priest when he enters the commonroom.
You there, a moment of your time please sir cleric of destruction. Have you seen anything out'a the ordinary in the last hour or so? Some items of importance have been stolen.

![]() |

As the party approaches they see a big man ensconced head-to-toe in a flowing mail made from chain of heavy links. His coif is currently doffed, so he might better attack a platter laid heavy with steaming meats and a small mountain of stewed turnips.
On his back rides a massive sword made for two hands, and it's martial spirit makes you think he would better be called 'warrior' than 'priest', but his right gauntlet is painted a glaring white, marking him a follower of Torm, and no stranger to glorious combat.
As Keaton approaches and questions, the big man pauses to swallow a bite and rinse his mouth with a swig of water. He cleans his lips with a quick swipe of his left sleave and replies, his deep voice growling like two boulders slowly grinding each other to dust.
"Have I seen anything out of the ordinary? I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Goblin attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched orc warbands glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. And I've seen all those moments lost in time, like tears...in the rain.
But have I seen aught amiss in this last hour? No, good sir, I've seen naught amiss save my meal interrupted by an agent questing after important items now stolen.
Perhaps, did you expand on that which you seek, I might be able to lend greater hand in thy mission of import."

Molok Granite Fist |

Molok sizes up the "priest" and his weapons. While the sword might look impressive to a human, it still was a few feet short of his own massive blade. The look of the man, however, was impressive and Molok decided that here might be a fellow warrior worthy the name.
Are you sure his name is not Roy Batty? I could have sworn Priss was here just a moment ago...lol

Keaton Larroquette |

Hearing the warm up speech and long winded answer the battle cleric gave made Keaton's eyes bulge slightly.
So no?. Hell big fella, if you want to help us find this trickster thief then come with us. I will have a waitress put your plate aside and keep it warm. My name is Keaton, this is my merry band of doers. What is your name friend?
Speaking to Chalaska
What is the most important thing those keys could open. We should start there and work our way to least importance. Two groups, Chalaska will lead one group, I the other.

Chalaska answers Keaton roughly "Obviously the most valuable thing that those keys open was the room we were just in. The gate keys would be useless with guards all over the gate now. Unless they made it out prior to us finding the keys missing. The only other place keys were missing from was the meeting rooms in the southern inn tower."
One of the guards speaks up "We did find the buttons my lord, Chalaska is the head of security. Might I suggest that we... have someone search her room. Nothing like this happened while Nalaskur was in charge. Maybe he should have been here."
A couple of the other patrons in the taproom speak up in jeers "Didn't someone have a note about her?", and "Chalaska is responsible for security." and "Maybe she felt slighted when she wasn't asked to watch the inn herself."
The outburst again drives Chalaska to anger as she walks over and strikes one of the patrons across the face as the other ones cower away. "Shut your lying mouth!" she screams at the man.

Speaking to the group calmly
OK I do not usually yell, but do excuse my rudeness.
With that he wiggled his fingers and a loud horrible horn sounded in the center of the room trying to drown out the commotion. A look of intense vulgar anger takes over his face while he yelled.
Will people calm down and shut up before I start turning you all into blocks of ice to chill the ale!
When he has control of the room again he clears his throat with a small cough, returning to a normal tone.
Now, yes we will search Chalaska's room. I believe she is being framed and they most likely left a clue or something there for us to find. But I still believe she is innocent. We are falling into the thief's plans, confusion, the more we point fingers the more we run around in circles, and the more time there is to cover tracks. So, a quick search of her room please to see if there is any misdirection from the thief.
First, yes please whomever has the note give it here.
Did anyone actually watch Nalaskur leave the walls? I have only known him for an hour or so and this would be a cleaver ruse if he was to pull a heist.
Next, I require that we be given flour from the kitchen in buckets. If our intruder is invisible he will not be for long.
Next, if I have to yell again there will be consequences, you are to raise your hand and wait to be called on.
Next, Chalaska, I believe you, mind your tone with your allies.
Next, let us check the southern tower.
Then I will cast magic to detect magic auras. After each step I will reevaluate this plan and make adjustments as needed. Any questions.
The last bit was said more as a statement, Keaton did not appear to be requesting any questions from those present.

*****briefly before Keaton********
Aterro nods as he is brought up to speed on the current predictament, and rises, facing the group and preparing to give his opinion, when then the air is rent with the CRACK of an authoritative palm against a peasent's cheek.
Like a boulder loosed from a steep hilltop, the mail-clad cleric slams into the back of Chalaska pinning her briefly against the wall. A voice used to barking commands over the tumult of the battlefield sounds around the room, "The words of the peasant will NOT be met with the force of the TYRANT! Torm's precepts of justice will NOT be broken in my presence! Do NOT presume that your authority of the law places thy WILL to be ABOVE the LAW! Do NOT met out force without proper authority again!"
The hulking form of the mailed war-cleric turns and the right fist of Torm points at the guard that spoke about the buttons. "You are a FOOL to speak secrets about an investigation into HERESY in an open room. You will SPEAK when you are SPOKEN to, and we shall see if your actions mark you as TRAITOR after the current crises is past!"
The large, war-scarred head then turns and takes in the room at large. "We require silence and secrecy. Clear the room."
A moment pauses as the patrons look at each other, wondering if he is serious. "I said clear the ROOM!" and an armored fist flips over the table nearest to him, sending mugs and plates to all corners.
As the patrons clear, Keaton's voice booms over the commotion, restoring order.

Keaton Larroquette |

Looking at the war cleric.
Gods Damm it. Are you a religious nut, zealot without a conscious? Of all the days. Put Torm on the back burner a minute you are making the confusion worse. When we find the thief you can bring him to justice or do what you gots' to do, but right now simmer down, simmer down.

Buckets of flour are brought from the kitchen at Keaton's request as the customers clear the area after the scuffle.
When Chalaska finishes addressing Keaton she says "We will search my room next, I have nothing to hide." She then draws her longsword with one hand while drawing her shortsword with the other as she steps toward the war priest.
"YOU are a guest here, DO NOT touch me again or your god will be figuring out how to sew you back together." she says as she takes up a very threatening pose as the guards draw weapons and come to her aid, since she is the head of the swords.
"IF you think you can take me then I will BE GLAD to step outside and give you a shot at it. Otherwise CLEAN UP YOUR DAMN MESS." she says as she readies an action to strike if the proper respect is not given.

Your words have honor and truth, but your delivery leaves a lot to be desired. Welcome to the party, sir. I am Narnel.

Aterro nods at Narnel and grins wryly. "Aye. So I've been told before. Good to be welcomed, sir."
He turns on the guardsmen, the white gauntlet of Torm pointing at them. "Put up thy steel, pups. Following orders is benevolent. Following orders into Chaos is Heresy."
Now he turns on Chalaska. "And YOU are Chief of Security, or so I've been told. So sheath thy wrath, for I have done you a great service this day. For, on the morrow, when you are called before the City Council to explain...all of this. And they ask, 'Why hast thou struck a citizen of this fair city?' would you rather say 'I believe my authority higher than yours, so I struck him because his words did not please me,' or wouldst thou say "I was moved to passion by the crimes, but the clergy of Torm hath righted mine sight, so I am already made to rights with it.'?
And, need I remind you, that you are -currently- the PRIME target of investigation into this crime? Do you really need to add assault on the public, as well as," now he looks at her weapons, the only heed he's paid them, "drawing steel on a cleric of Torm?
Were you a man I would accuse you of needlessly trying to prove thy manhood, though it occurs to me that the lack of the tool might not preclude the desire to swing it."
Aterro bends and takes up a bucket. "When this is all done I shall speak with thy pastor. It seems some verses of Humilty and Duty are required. For the now, lead on as Keaton has said, unless...you wish to add 'hindering an investigation' to the list of crimes that are acquired this day."

Well now, this may be one of the most elaborate frame-ups I have ever encountered.
He leans close to Keaton, and whispers to him,
Let us have her at least held under suspicion of the crime until we sort this out.

![]() |

Despite himself, a large grin cracks the big cleric's stony face. "Oh. Yes. Let us at least do that."

![]() |

Aterro continues. "So, of course this is a good plan, but, perhaps, someone with a softer tongue than I should take the lead? Give her chance to respond to kind request. If she will not yield in the face of a mountain of evidence...well, then, her and I, we shall have words."

Keaton Larroquette |

Are you a dumb person?
Spoken to Chalaska, with a pause afterwards.
Are you a dumb person?
Spoken to a guard that knows Chalaska, also with a pause afterwards.
All, save for the representative of Torm, know Chalaska is not a dumb person. What we are looking at is what a dumb person would do, or what someone trying to frame someone would try and achieve. I see this to prove her to be more innocent, especially since she requested we search her room so we could move the investigation forward to find the true thief.
To Chalaska
You were in your room when the alarm went off, yes? Who else would of been nearby to put these items in your room easily?

Kenna Icemane |

The petite half-elf who has been silently following the events from a corner of the room, crouched more like a cornered animal, finally gets up and, picking up a bucket she follows.
--------
With the evidence found she speaks up meekly: "This is too easy. With all the stolen things here, I believe this was about discrediting her, not about taking the gold and making her the scapegoat.", Kenna turns to Chalaska "Could this Nalaskur, or someone else, be after your position? Or out to just remove you from it."

![]() |

Aterro lets Keaton talk. He makes sure that Keaton holds on to the missing keys, but he himself will hold the missing gold and the button-less shirt, since surely the suspected criminal an her allies ought not be entrusted with the evidence of their crime, and he, only having just arrived, is really the only one beyond suspicion, hence the best to hold evidence.

Chalaska went on the defensive as whispers in the group talked of locking her up.
She then answered Keaton's words "I was not in my room when the alarm was sounded, if you remember I am the one that raised the alarm with you when we went to get the keys out of the office to lock up for the night. Since then the only time we have been out of each others sight is when you went to deal with the merchant and my group went to the strongroom."
"It would have to be someone that knew the inn's routine.... knew my routine.... and knew where my room was. That would leave a lot of staff as well as swords that would have that knowledge." she adds.
Turning then to answer Kenna "Me and Nalaskur do not see eye to eye, that is true. But we are both Zhents. I am ordered by them to keep a eye on him and I suppose he has the order to keep an eye on me. It's a check and counter check that keeps the balance I suppose. By getting rid of me, I would only just be replaced by another. He is the innkeep, a job I do not covet. I am a soldier and leading the swords is what I fit better doing."
As Brother Aterro grabs up the gold Chalaska barks "This priest, we have just met him and he gets the gold? This does not fit. Keaton, do you know this man better than you are letting on or is it common for your type to be run over by someone you just met?"

Aterro scoffs as more venom spews from the grating woman. "I an not 'getting' the gold like some common house-thief or a bickering merchant of trinkets. I am 'holding' this evidence of a crime, including -your- button-less shirt, as the only person not currently under suspicion. No offense meant, good Keaton.
And he is NOT being 'run over'. He simply demonstrates the good sense of trusting a member of the clergy, and a representative of the local chapter of Torm.
WOULD that you showed a hundereth-weight of this man's tact OR restraint and we would have solved this crime by now. Perhaps if you paid this much attention to your duties in the first place I would never have been targeted by thy venomous and uncouth tongue! Confound it, woman. If you spent as much time searching for the criminal as you do sewing distrust, we would already have the villain in chains."
Bannock feels the battle-heart rising within him, but he calms himself for the now, taking his time in examining the ripped shirt and placing it a belt-sack. Venerate the immortal Torm that he be given strength enough to tolerate city's guard!

Keaton Larroquette |

What are you doing, ummm... Brother Cleric of Torm? We are going to lick that gold right back where it came from, the shirt too. Let us do that now.
Keaton leads the way back down to the locked room and puts the gold and shirt back. He looks for a ledger or inventory list that has the contents of the room.
Can my companions please search this room for hidden things or doors. This may of been a distraction to get us out of the room.

![]() |

"Ye gods, man. Are you going to stick that right in the same place it was taken from? That lock is compromised now! After the keys were taken, she--or, whomever the thief was--could've made copies, or at least wax imprints! I know that I would trust myself more than a locked room that has already been unlocked, at least until a culprit is behind bars.... But, I do not mean to tell you your business. So you say, so you say."

Molok Granite Fist |

Molok barely keeps from laughing out loud at the antics of this group. He does not know who took what, but in his mind a 3rd person is to blame. Also, as these are Zhents, he has no lost love for their plans going awry.

As the one group heads off to search Keaton's room Chalaska and Keaton discuss what has transpired so far...
"How someone got into a locked room and the key box that requires two keys to open is what concerns me the most. Room locks are standard fair and anyone skilled in the art of using tools for such matters can make easy work of them." she then reaches into her belt pouch and produces a key "My room key is right here."
"Well, I don't know about discredit, it looks like that sort of ruse, but with two hundred gold still missing I would say at the moment that thievery is still the best option. If you had not chosen to come back here and compare the ledgers and count everything we would not have known the extra gold was missing."
"Everything the Zhents hold here is in this room, anything of value anyway. I am still curious about those southern tower rooms that the keys were missing for. The keys have been found in my room so obviously whoever did it has no further need for them but I wonder why they were taken."
"That cleric is going to be trouble, he runs off at the mouth to much. Maybe out there, dealing with bandits and animals he can get by with it, there are many here that may kill such a man in his sleep, not on the battlefield."
"We don't have a real lead, we are running in circles, literally chasing our own tails. Accusing each other... well accusing me anyway."
"Now that we have the keys back we should lock the outer gates, it is after dark and the gates should have been closed and locked over two hours ago."
As Keaton searched under his shirt he found that the key was still there.
