Keaton Larroquette |

Here Lemmy Lemmy Lemmy, here Lemmy, Lemmy, Lemmy.
Keaton says as he looks around the burnt room. A moment later there is a chicken hawk screech, and the hawk perched on the table.
Get to work, let me know if you find anything out the ordinary. Something that would cause a fire; natural or unnatural.
Keaton starts searching the room for any clues. He perks his head up to his new elf companion.
Hey I am Keaton, nice to meet you. So tell me about yourself! Afterwards we can ask some other workers some questions.
Keaton goes back to searching expecting to told a story.
He will search the walls, floor, behind anything left in the room, he will check for hidden storage pockets, and sift through the ash (and taste it). The hawk will also do a complete search of the room.
How would you like us to search?
Explain actions or dice rolls?
Lemmy is my familiar

Molok Granite Fist |

Nod his agreement to Cade, Molok leaves the Inn and moves towards the centre of the village. Consulting the handout the young boy gave him, he locates the Constables office and heads off to speak with the man.

Narnel Falerathon |

Narnel begins to investigate the room for signs of the fires origin.
I am Narnel, and I hail from a monastery to the southwest. I fear for the stability of nature in this area due to my discoveries in years of solitary study. I hope to bring balance to nature by searching out the areas of the most instability and rectifying the problem at its source. This area may have such sources.

“Yes, you may,“ Vaneros answers, trying to mimic his father’s aloofness as best as he remembers it. ”The journey from my family’s holdings in Neverwinter has been long and I’ll need to replace some of my equipment before I venture forth. A friend of mine dropped your name when we were talking about the journey and I hope he didn’t promise too much.” My old man used to say: always appeal to a merchants conceit.
”I might need a set of boots, some gloves, maybe a pipe, or a place to buy one?” He continues while waiting for the merchant to show his wares. Vaneros takes off his long travelling coat, revealing a fine set of leather armour with two daggers strapped to it.
While trying on an expensive-looking set of boots, he starts inquiring further. ”As I think about it, do you by any chance know a man called Berren?”

Keaton Larroquette |

Keaton perks his head up from his search, so many questions for his new companion.
Huh, so let me get this straight. You are from a monastery, living in isolation, reading books, during your reading you discovered that nature is... not good, and you want to make it better? Have you fact checked any of the books, or read any books not inside the monastery? Sometimes isolation can get the better of people, and they can go a little... nevermind. Just saying the ride up here was nice; the grass was green, the sky was blue, and the goats were still goats.
They sure did look like goats.
Do you have any of these books with you? Is there someone that helps you read the books, maybe he is invisible, or no one else can see? Are you an eunuch?
Great, alone with the crazy guy. Hope I am within screaming distance of the kitchen staff. This is just like the guy we picked up stranded on that island alone, interesting at first, but when he started thinking we were not real and started defecating in the corners it was time to get rid of him. Not sharing a room with this loon. I wonder if he cut it off himself or it was punishment for something. I feel bad for this Elven fella, I would probably go mad too if I lost my main mast.
Keaton gives a forced smile, had to tell if it is pity or if he is worried.

Laial ponders, Was that too much, I hate talking to other priests, why did I volunteer to come here of all places?

Kenna Icemane |

After everyone else rushed off to talk to the townspeople, Kenna is left alone at the tavern. She considers her options for a while and then walks up to Kaylessa once more: "I'm sorry, Lady Irkell? Which is the tallest building in town?"

Location: Kitchen of the Swinging Sword
Who's Here: Keaton Larroquette and Narnel Falerathon
Keaton and Narnel search around the soot filled kitchen, from the naked eye it seems that pretty much the entire part of the room was touched by the heat and flame of the fire. Besides the stone of the walls and ceiling which does not look to have been damaged once some soot is wiped away.
However the duo soon notices that the deepest and darkest soot is in the middle of the room, probably where the fire started. However no scorch marks on the floor underneath the soot show any signs of a fire directly burning there. If the table was what was in the center of the room then why is it still here? It looks like it would have been a total loss.
You can also easily tell where items in the room that were lost and already removed had been by the concentration of fire marks on the walls. How a fire burned this hot but did not escape into the main part of the inn is a complete mystery and really does not seem to make any logical sense.
There are no soot or burn marks outside the door that leads to the hall except on the kitchen side of the door. After investigating the door further it seems it is more soot covered than actually burned even on the kitchen side which would suggest that any actual flames never touched the door itself.
However the back door to the outside was almost completely destroyed and now what remained of it had already been taken down and now lay on its side in the room. Going out the door and looking at the outside of the building was much like the hall, besides some soot and a few burn marks where the door burned there was no other marks on the outside of the building as well.
It is as if the flames through all three of the fires had never escaped from either doorway. Other than that little bit of information that was all that could be obtained from both men's and familiars physical search and investigation of the room.

It's only a few minute walk to the south side of town, where Jalessa Ornra's butcher shop stands. It's a series of four buildings in a row. The first building has a painted sign of ham being carved by a cleaver, accompanied by no words. This building serves as the workplace and shop of Jalessa. The second building is the smokehouse, most well known for creating Jalessa's famed smoked and salted pork jerky. Joined to this building is an underground cellar where meat is stored. The third building has wash hanging from a clothesline just in front of it and is the home that Jalessa and Harburk share. The fourth building is a bunk-room that the four assistant constables use as lodging.
Inside the first building, the shop, Jalessa attends a counter at which she has a chalkboard that lists the day's prices and available cuts. Scattered throughout the large singular room are a few barrels of meat and the smell of preservative hangs in the air.

Jalessa herself is a small woman with a wide grin and short, well-kept red hair. She currently wears a deep purple dress and a simple silver pendant. Upon seeing the goliath, her smile only grows wider. "Well, hello!" as Molok explains his reason for coming to Jalessa she responds "Let me fetch the Constable for you."
The woman disappears through a door behind the counter and returns a few moments later, the tall and lean Constable Harburk in tow.
Harburk Tuthmarillar

Constable Harburk in Red Larch has offered 50 gold pieces for taking care of the banditry problem on the Cairn Road.
He currently is wearing his butcher's outfit, and the apron is stained with blood from his latest work. He nods curtly to the goliath, offering a simple "Hello."
Jalessa rolls her eyes at her fiance, and she addresses the goliath again, "Forgive my fiance. He gets ornery when he gets pulled away from his work. Did Kaylessa send you? He's been looking for someone to deal with those bandits ever since they showed up last tenday. I told Kaylessa to send us someone that was able bodied and you sure look the part. However I thought a group would be best. Perhaps there are others?"
Harburk scowls, but his eyes flash as he realizes who he's looking at. "Aye, that woman is stubborn as a mule. If you're willing to take them on I've got a 50gp bounty set aside for whoever deals with 'em. Maybe you'll look into that silliness with the "Fell Magic of Lance Rock" when you're done. I am sure Kaylessa told you about that as well. Now that is a true fool's errand, but if it makes Kaylessa happy then by all means."
Soon the man realizes maybe you are not here for that reason and looks at you inquisitively. "?"

"Old Berren, hmm you a friend of his? I guess it don't matter, he got all stirred up over something, said he was headed north. About two months ago now I guess. Hasn't been back. Not that I know of anyway. But us Tarnlar's are not known to get involved in gossip, nor shall we. He was all interested in that first fire down at the inn and then he took off. "Truth be told there is not much business for my quality of clothing here in Red Larch either for that matter. You might occasionally catch someone passing through that'll buy something. The normal townsfolk here are simple farmers." he then kind of tapers off as if he has told you to much.

Constable Harburk in Red Larch has offered 50 gold pieces for taking care of the banditry problem on the Cairn Road.
"Well as far as the bandits go, there are six of them - at least, six of them that came to town. There could be more or a leader operating them, but if there is I haven't heard word of it. They carried swords and wore basic armor - nothing heavier than a shirt of chain mail. They wanted to try and extort some of the goods from our marketplace, but my men and I drove them off before they could do any real harm. Didn't appear they wanted a whole town up in arms against them." he explains.
"Had one of my boys track them to the southeast down Cairn Road, he lost their trail about five miles out, but I had reports of a couple other travelers being accosted out there in the same area. I just don't have the manpower here to handle anything outside the town itself. However I am looking for a good group to work for the town in the matter of investigating a few things. Tell this Cade that you work for... I believe that is what you said his name was. Well just tell him that perhaps your group takes care of this bandit problem and I'll see about deputizing him in the service of the town. It would be nice to put some of these wild and crazy rumors to rest." he continues with a sort of smirk on his face as if to see if Molok showed the least bit of understanding of the offer that he just made. So far the large goliath had not seemed that bright. Perhaps he was just the errand boy.
"As for the "Fell Magic" of Lance Rock, I really don't think it's a priority - Kaylessa is annoying when she brings it up, rumors she has heard from other people mostly, but having bandits on our doorstep is far worse. If there really is "Fell Magic" out there, it's far enough away that it isn't an immediate threat." he says as he shows you Cairn Road on the town map.
The bandits are southeast down Cairn Road about five miles. (Roughly one hour and 45 minutes travel time to the destination.)
Lance Rock is southwest of town about 15 miles. (Roughly five hours travel time to the destination.)
They are basically not in the same direction if you are wondering.

Before exiting Keaton will inspect the table in relation to the center of the room were it looks like the most ash had gathered, moving the table if needed to put it back in place. Then looking at the damaged door he takes a step out of the inn and sees if he could line up a straight shot through the door to the table. Paying particular attention if there is a heavier burn mark in one area of the door that shows up on both sides.
There are some spells that shoot fire right through things in a straight line, let's see if this could be one of those spells.
He will note any findings, and may rre-investigate the kitchen with any new findings. After he finishes his detective work he gestures to the monk to join him as he leaves the building to talk with the kitchen staff that are cooking outside. He approaches them friendly and with a smile.
Hullo, my name is Keaton a practicer of magic; Kaylessa has asked me to look into the "Fell Magic" at Lance Rock that may of extended to the inn. Could you assist me with a few questions, don't worry I am not the constable, just a freelance employee of Kaylessa's.
A polite pause that allows the kitchen staff to agree or disagree to the questions.
Assuming that they agree he continues. He gives ample time for each question to be answered before asking the next.
That big table in the kitchen, what is usually prepared on it?
Is it one person's work station?
Did the fires start while the kitchen was being used?
How did the fires start?
Were they easy to put out?
Did the fires always start in the same spot?
Are there any businesses that would do this to eliminate you as competition?
Anybody that is generally upset with the inn?
Anything else that may be helpful?
A bit off subject but my group may also look into the bandit problem, any information about the bandits you could provide?
Did the bandit problem start around the time the fires started, or has that just been a long term problem?
Keaton will be thankful of any information he could attain. He leaves room for the elven monk to add his own questions before dismissing himself and returning back to the group.

Before Keaton has the opportunity to leave the room and begin his rant of questions for the staff, Narnel interjects.
First off, Keaton, I am not a eunuch. Secondly, not all discoveries flow from books and fact checking. My particular discovery was more of a melding with nature combined with study that has led me to a dark omen. I appreciate your dependence upon study and rote memorization to achieve your arcane ends, but there are other methods of enlightenment, my friend.
Also, it seems to me that this fire came more from a creature made of or surrounded entirely by flame. It explains the localized nature of the burn. This could easily describe something from the elemental realm of fire, rather than a spell that likely would have caused significantly more destruction to the surrounding area.
Narnel follows Keaton and listens to the interrogation.

"Well..." Kaylessa starts to say something then pauses as if in thought before continuing "I don't know how you would get up there, safely anyway. That's almost forty or fifty feet in the air to the point of the roof. Even if you went out a attic window it would be very dangerous with the pitch of the roof. If you fall it might kill you. I could never be responsible for that."
"and besides, Lance Rock is too far away to see at this distance even from that height. Probably see some of the outlying farms. Down Cairn Road a few miles maybe. Up Larch Path. Probably even see the foothills in the distance. Hardly worth the risk unless you have some kind of levitation magic." she adds as she responds to Kenna's questioning.
"There was a guy that came through here a few years back, floated around town everywhere he went. Had some kind of cloth he sat on. It was truly amazing to watch, unfortunately he left on the next caravan after he arrived. I guess we were just a stop along his path, to wherever he was headed." Kaylessa says with a smile.

When Vaneros questions about a pipe, Helvur responds in kind "That really is a nasty habit, but if you must have one then you can probably find one over at Vallivoe’s Sundries. You can find pretty much anything for sale over there, if you are willing to dig for it."
"Not really my kind of place, he also has a army of children in his employ so I'd be careful of your coin purse while over there. If you ever see my four little ones anywhere close to that place then please send them home at once." he says, "On second thought forget I even attempted to send you over there. Maybe you can find a pipe at your next stop, aye" he adds as Vaneros is leaving.
As Vaneros takes his leave of the establishment the four Tarnlar children outside are eager to befriend him, asking him a thousand questions about his adventures and where he is from and what he is doing in Red Larch. For despite all the dangers in the world, children will be children. In fact they stay right with Vaneros as he heads for the Swinging Sword eager to get away from their daily chores and to interact with a stranger they have never seen.
Finally one of the boys speaks up and ask Vaneros if he is going out to see the dwarf prospector? After some inquiry the following information is learned, however even if it is out of the mouth of children.
A couple of tendays ago, the Tarnlar children (as Vaneros has now learned who the children are) were out berry-picking in the direction of Lance Rock when they met a grizzled dwarf prospector who warned them away from Lance Rock “because there’s plague there.” The dwraven miner warned us about a ravine near there and told us to go no where near it because of the plaque. Is that where you are headed? they inquire.
Upon arriving out front of the Swinging Sword the children protest Vaneros leaving as they are forbidden to go inside by their parents. Perhaps he could play with them later?

Keaton continued trying to recreate the scene in his mind from a spell casters prospective. However by placing the table in the center of the room where it looked like the fire may have started would have certainly destroyed the table, and while certain spells were able to cause such a fire, most magical spells that produced such effects were more flash fire effects than things that would incinerate a building. However it may have been possible if certain conditions were correct.
He soon found himself outside with the kitchen staff that was gathered around the cooking grills and fires, Narnel also joined with him outside as Keaton questioned the staff.
The two men soon learn that the big table was indeed not in the center of the room, it was a station set against a wall that finished dishes was placed on before it was carried out to the customers as well as where they prepared their famous Crumblecake.
It also was not a station that belonged to any one member of the staff since it was used for multiple purposes.
How the fires started was another matter entirely as none of the kitchen staff could even guess to the cause of it. The fires also was very hard to put out at first but then almost seemed to go out on their own and come under control quickly. None of the staff knew where the fire started at in either of the three fires as they always started late at night when he kitchen was closed and no one was in the room.
The Swinging Sword has no competition as it is the only inn in town, however they have very heated competition as far as drinking establishments go with the Helm at Highsun right across the street. Then there is Gaelkur's, a combination used tool and good shop that also served as a barber shop and small tavern, where a lot of the locals hung out. Not necessarily a competitor with the larger establishments but still there non the less.
The staff also inform you that everyone in town seemed to love the inn, even Garlen who runs the Helm doesn't want to see the Sword go away. However he probably would be happier if The Swinging Sword stuck to being more an inn instead of combination inn and tavern.
They also inform you that a man in town named Berren did some snooping around investigating the first fire but after the second fire he ran off north all in a huff about something and they hadn't seen him since. When Berren was here he lived over at the boarding house mostly, always suspicious of everyone and everything.
They know nothing of the bandits other than they came to town about a tenday ago when the markets were open and tried to extort some coin and merchandise from a few farmers before the constable ran them off. They inform you that once a tenday on the 10th, 20th and 30th of each month the market opens and is crowded with wagons from nearby farms. Farmers drive in from homesteads miles away to sell all manner of in-season produce, cheese, cider and cider vinegar, and last year’s pickled beets in jugs. On any other day the only one at the market is the local pickle merchant. He is the only half-orc in town and tends to stay away from the rest of the townsfolk. He's never been really welcomed as part of the community.

Vaneros Anteri |

"That does sound like Berren, " Vaneros answers to Helvur. "A shame you can't help me any further, but thank you nonetheless."
About Vallivoe’s Sundries he responds by shaking his head and saying: "Well, you know how it is, old habits die hard and that one's a really old one! But I'll take your advise and watch my coin purse or even avoid the place altogether."
Vaneros shakes Helvur's hand as he departs with his new hat on his head, new boots in one and new gloves in the other hand. No point in getting them dirty in the streets just yet.
Outside he is overwhelmed by a hail of questions being directed at him from his newfound followers. Vaneros tries to answer them as truthfully as he can, which is hard enough when you are answering twenty of them simultaneously! What doesn't help is Ixerazhu's voice constantly giving mock answers in Vaneros' mind.
"Oh, that's a good one! You're here because they threw you out of the circle! Because you freed a Devil from his bindings so he could reclaim..."
"Again? You really think I don't remember that part?"
"No, no, I just like to remind you."
"How kind of you. Now would you please be quiet Ixerazhu?"
"Oh, I'm sorry, I don't want to be a burden or anything."
"Of course you don't..."
"So how about a deal?"
"A deal? Really? How stupid do I look?"
"Very!” He laughs.
"Oh by the gods! I really did have to make a deal with the one devil with a bad sense of humour..."
Once he reaches the inn, Vaneros really needs an ale or finally a drag of sweet, sweet smoke from a pipe. Over his musing he almost fails to hear the one bit of crucial information the children have to offer: the plague at Lance Rock and an old dwarf being in the area.
"Ok, ok, I'll come out and play with you tomorrow. I might even have another story to tell by then, but only if you are good, ok?" Vaneros says with a kind voice, then a thought crosses his mind. He is not entirely sure if it is his own or Ixerazhu's. "Your father told you to stay away from that Vallivoe, didn't he? And I know you're good as gold and all. But you sure have a friend who is with Vallivoe's kids, right? Ask him to join us tomorrow and I'll have another surprise waiting for you all." I must make sure to bring some sweets or I'll never hear the end of it.
"Spoiling the children now? I'm so proud of you!"
"Oh shut it!"
Inside he pays his room and gets the first of the four included drinks, a mild ale if they have one or a watered wine. He’ll leave some of his belongings in his room if it is lockable.
He sits down and relays the story the kids told him to the others. He also mentions how his friend Berren investigated the first fire and left town heading north. If she is there, he asks the innkeeper if she knows anything about Berren or the dwarven prospector.
To Cade he replies: "We could at least try to find out where the bandits are and make a plan. But I'm ready for anything really."

Keaton Larroquette |

Before leaving the burnt room still talking to Narnel.
Good to hear you are intact. As for fact checking, I believe it has a place in situations like this. Not many people would travel as far as you did for such a vast project without asking a few questions. I however love your gusto! Dive in head first and hope there is enough room to swim. I hope you find what you are looking for, but I also hope you do not find what you are looking for because that means you uncovered a massive problem that could cause much harm to many people. Either way you have peaked my interest.
Keaton listens intently to the answers the cooks give, and has one more question before taking his leave.
How long did it take before the fire was easy to manage? There are some magic spells that can create spheres of fire that cannot be extinguished. But such spells have limited durations. If you were to guess would you say the fire was unmanageable for a matter of moments, minutes, or longer?
Flame sphere?
To Narnel as they walk back to the group.
Want to go check out this boarding house and Berren guy? Maybe he found something when looking into the fire?
As they walk back into the room Keaton's chicken hawk walks behind him in a hop walk that birds do. Keaton will grab a seat with the group, Lemmy will stay on the floor, he will relay all the information he and Narnel have received, he tries not to do all the talking and leaves room for Narnel to speak, if he chooses. After giving the account he will mention Berren, the boarding house, and his flight North after the second fire.
If asked his opinion about the pursuing the bandits first he thinks this is a great idea. He also asks if we are to just murder the men, he would prefer bringing them back here and letting the constable handle the dirty work.
Keaton will also introduce Lemmy, his chicken hawk familiar that walked in with Keaton, to the group. He will offer to send Lemmy to go and scout ahead and try and locate these bandits.
Keaton will pay 1/2 of the room cost, split with Cade. He will order food and drink as he needs them, too often has he tavern crawled and sobered up far away from his starting point.

"I fear I know little more than I have said already, there have been three fires at the Swinging Sword in the past three months. I doubt the staff there are incompetent enough to cause them by accident. There are also reports of unusually frequent lightning, even in clear skies and persistent fogs on the Sumber Hills."
Laial pauses a moment, "We have assembled a group to investigate the problems in he area, if you would care to make any contribution..."

Kenna Icemane |

"Well, nevermind...", Kenna says wiht embarrassment and a hint of disappointment "If I cannot see it from here there is no amount of levitation that would help."
She turns to scurry away and await the return of the others. She stops for a moment "Could I have another ale?"

Narnel returns to the table, anticipating a bite to eat and another elven brandy. He takes a sip and speaks to the group.
So, now you know what Keaton and I discovered at the location of the fire. The actions of this Berren individual do seem a bit odd. Where exactly are the bandits? Maybe we can check on Berren and the bandits at the same time?

Once everyone returns to the inn and shares their findings Cade offers. ”Companions, It appears we have a couple of options set before us.” He considers for a moment, “I believe we should put the fire investigation and on hold until someone is willing to pay us to solve the problem. Also, there is a chance that this is one of the things the Constable will pay us to look into once we take care of the bandits, and I'd rather get paid for the job." Looking at his companions he continues. "So as I see things we need to decide what we want to do first, investigate the rock or dispatch these villainous bandits that have plagued this community. Personally I vote to go after the bandits. Either way I have realized that while I may know everyone from the caravan, some of you are a little shy and did not socialize with each other during our journey. I think introductions are in order and a summary of what skills you bring to the party. Then we can better discuss our strategy”And account for any dead weight.

Six of the seven newly formed companions sat in the Swinging Sword Inn, discussing their next move. The constable had informed Molok the spot out on the Cairn road that the bandits had last been tracked to before the trail was lost.
Vaneros had come back from the clothier wearing some rather nice new accessories before getting a room and stowing some of his gear, he then joined everyone else in the main room of the inn.
The fire investigation in the kitchen had ended and Keaton and Narnel had returned to the main room, the last of their investigation turning up the fact that all three fires only took about a half an hour to come under control and be put out.
Kenna was served another ale to drown her disappointment in her climbing on the roof idea as she joined the others. The buildings were just not tall enough.
The group had also learned that Berren who obviously was no longer in Red Larch had been staying at the boarding house before his sudden departure after the second fire.
Cade meanwhile sat at the table and tried to come up with a course of action and now asked everyone to introduce themselves and what they may have to offer the group as far as skills and resources went.

"A group, you say. To investigate. That sounds like a really good idea to me. Well we sure can help with any spell casting services that this group may need, at a reasonable nominal fee of course. We also brought a few healing potions from Waterdeep if you may need them, we really don't try to make a profit on them but we do ask to recover the cost of materials to make them. Fifty gold pieces each and we have a total of six. Hopefully you won't need them and all of this is just rumors that have increased over each telling. Gossip can be such a dangerous thing in and unto itself. Red Larch is usually such a quiet place." Imdarr says as he reaches up and holds his pendant in his hand.
"Perhaps, if you find any shall we say foolishness going on. Then you will let me know right away. The Order of the Gauntlet would need to know about such things, we can not let evil persist in this world. Keaton Larroquette |

Keaton will stand, he is very tan and has very curly black hair that is chin length pulled behind his ears and frames his baby face. He is clad in many different styles of clothing that are customary to many different countries. The styles are different and exotic, but all the clothing matches with colors; they range of blues, browns, and some hints of linen white. He has an exotic dagger on his cloth belt and very worn in leather shoes. He waves his hand in a welcoming gesture to the group and speaks with a warm smile.
Hello, I am Keaton. Nice to meet friends of the road and new friends of the tavern. I have worked as a mariner mage for a shipping company based out of the sword coast that does long voyage trade. I was the apprentice navigator on board and have a knack for keeping our ale casts cold. I do not specialize in damaging magic, I prefer to make the enemy pirate ship's deck slippery and ruin their attempts to board, or put them to sleep while my shipmates apply the irons. I am better from a distance and disdain being in direct melee confrontation. Also, I have Lemmy, he is my hawk familiar, when we get closer to the bandits he can scout the area out to locate them. Nice to meet you all!

Laial sits down near the others as they make introductions. Waiting patiently as Keaton finishes she speaks up.
"I am Laial, Initiate of Umberlee, as to my skillset, I can heal when required, I know how to survive in the wilds and the danger water poses to most has little effect on me, and while I'm not a professional warrior, I know my way around a blade or spear."
Laial coughs softly to clear her throat.
"Those at the shrine know little, they are seconded here from Waterdeep and have just recently arrived. They have asked to be kept updated of the goings on, and have as stock of healing potions available if we have coin to pay for them."

Molok Granite Fist |

The big goliath stands up next to introduce himself.
"Greetings to you all. I am Molok, late of the Granite Fist Tribe. I am a warrior and protector of my tribe, or..well..was. Anyway, I offer my sword in the service of this group, if you will have me."
He gives an awkward little bow and then sits once again upon the floor.

Vaneros Anteri |

As Vaneros comes down the stairs, a faint scent of leather and spices follows him. When he hands Kaylessa the rent for the room you notice him giving her a wink and a friendly smile. The ale he orderd is already sitting on the table and he places his new elegant hat beside it while sitting down and taking the first sip. You'd guess him being in his mid-twenties, were it not for his ember eyes that look much older. You notice that he got rid of his backpack and that he brought his ornate staff with him instead. The bright wood of it is adorned with symbols and runes that must have been burned into it.
After the others have finished their introduction, Vaneros begins to speak in a low, soft voice: "It's nice to meet you all. The name's Vaneros and I'm, like Keaton here, a practitioner of magic. Mine's more from that blasting department, though I can also create small illusions and make people do things they not technically want to." He pauses for a moment to take another sip of ale. "I also know some things about the past and magic and how to gain more information through research and by talking to people. Speaking of which, I found out a good clothier resides in this town. Though Helvur has some fine wares to offer, he is a bit skimpy on useful information."
Vaneros relays what he learned about the plague and the old dwarven prospector. He also mentions that he's following a lead on Vallivoe and the kids working for him. "I think I know his kind. If something is going on in this town and there is profit to be made, he'll know of it."
Regarding Berren he adds: "You should know that Berren is a friend of mine, a close one at that. But without a solid lead on where he went, chasing after him would be a mood point."
"Well, I'm prepared to leave right away. Getting on the good side of the constable sounds like a good plan and those thieves and way layers are a good place to start. We should be careful though, even brigands have family and friends. We should only kill them if they leave us no choice. Else we might make enemies here we aren't even aware of now. When we come back, I'd say we visit the boarding house."

Not for such a distance. I can see and cast some spells through Lemmy at, I don't know, fifty paces or so. Let me get him to work while we talk. The bandit problem you say was South neat Cairn road?
Keaton will get up and have Lemmy follow him, still bird hopping. He leads him out the front door and Lemmy flies away.
[I]Ok Lemmy, this is what you are going to do. Go (South?, will confirm before sending him off) to the Cairn road intersection. When you get there start looking off the road for a group of humanoids, maybe they have a camp. Look and see if they have an ambush or anything ready, or a campsite. Do a general scouting of the area and look for any other dangers. I will summon you back and you are to tell me what you discovered. Be safe and fly well. [/]

Narnel stands, and you notice that he carries very little and has no armor to speak of, but his knuckles are calloused. He walks with a worn quarterstaff, but he is light on his feet with a cat-like grace as he moves towards the door. He steps outside and leans against the building watching the small town until his companions are ready.

Cairn Road
The Dessarin Valley
Five Miles Southeast of Red Larch
15 Mirtul, 1491DR, 2:05 pm
Hills partitioned into fields and pastures by fieldstone fences or hedges surround Red Larch. A mile or so outside the town, cultivated areas give way to unspoiled wilderness. Miles of hills, woods, and grassland stretch on as far as the eye can see, filled with plentiful wildlife.
As the group makes their way down the Cairn Road southeast of Red Larch they find the short walk to be both refreshing if however non eventful. They soon arrive at the last spot that the bandits had been tracked to by one of Constable Harbruk's men that the Constable had so kindly marked on their maps for them.
The sky was clear, and no one had been encountered on the one hour and forty-five minute walk out. Taking a moment to look around the area the group looked in all directions. To the north side of the road there was a bramble of light brush with a few scattered trees with a view of the beginning of the Sumber Hills not far in the distance. A brush choked dell could be seen at the base of the foothills that marked the barrier point between the flatland and the Sumber Hills about a half mile away. To the south was about the same except there was no hills in sight, a small wooded area was about a half mile from the road in that direction. Wasn't really setup to be a good place for an ambush of any sort. Looking in front of them the Cairn road continued southeast with not much change in scenery in sight.
Lemmy circles overhead before finally coming down to rest next to Keaton on a nearby branch.
Telepathically Lemmy informs you that there is smoke rising above the treetops in the brush choked dell to the north, the trees and brush are too thick to see through without going into the dell.

Keaton Larroquette |

Thank you Lemmy.
Keaton will turn to address the group.
Lemmy says that there is smoke rising above the treetops in the Dell to the North. However it is too dense for him to scout further without entering the dell. I say we head in that direction but approach from the side that does not face the road. I can send Lemmy into the Dell to alert us if we have been noticed.
Please fly to the Dell and find the men. Then find a branch and perch on it so you can watch them. If they notice our approach screech as loud as you can and fly away.
Lemmy takes to the sky once more with his new task.
He is to find the bandits, hide, and if they notice us he is to screech loudly so we do not get ambushed.

"Lemmy deserves an extra portion of birdseed tonight." Looking at the others, "Can anyone find any tracks going in that direction, perhaps we can find out their numbers." A city slicker like me has no chance of finding anything but a rash. "I like Keaton's plan to circle around the camp. I think it gives us a better chance to catch the miscreants unawares."
