Act 1: Trouble in Red Larch Scene 1: Arrival in Red Larch

View Picture

Red Larch
The Dessarin Valley

15 Mirtul, 1491DR, 12:01 pm

Red Larch is a town on the Long Road, a few days' travel north of Waterdeep and a few days' travel south from Triboar. It's a way stop for caravans coming to or from the cities of the North, with an inn named the Swinging Sword, a tavern called the Helm at Highsun, and many craftspeople who cater to travelers.

The sun hangs high in the sky as a wagon caravan trundles further north, leaving behind Red Larch and the six companions it had brought to the town. The town center - where the Long Road meets the Cairn Road - is a sparsely populated area. At this time of day, most of the townfolk are down at the market circle in the southeast corner of town. A few people move into Drouth Fine Poultry for a midday meal, and still others head north along the Long Road towards the Swinging Sword and Helm at Highsun. From where our heroes stand, they can see the Swinging Sword - it's only the largest building in town. The huge three-story brick and wood building has several chimneys upon it.

Smoke trails from a few of the chimneys, but two of the chimneys near the back of the building billow smoke from what can surely be only kitchen hearths. Across the street the smaller building - the Helm at Highsun - is barely visible over the roof of the clothier's shop and a couple of houses wedged between the two buildings. Looking south, Waelvur's Wagonworks and Drouth Fine Poultry are visible. Smoke rises from the poultry shop's hearth and the sounds of hammers on wood can be heard from the wagonworks.

A couple of houses stand between the heroes and the Allfaiths Shrine, a temple North of the town center dedicated to no god in particular and home to a rotating series of priests who follow different beliefs. To the west, the small Kheldell Path gently curves away from the town.

It is here that our adventure begins, and the smells drifting from Drouth Fine Poultry and the Swinging Sword are particularly enticing currently. It's lunchtime in Red Larch, and our heroes are hungry.

As you take in the sights, a young boy no older than seven or eight runs up to each of you and sticks some kind of parchment in your hand before running off again. As you look at the leaflet it seems to be a flyer of some kind announcing all the things to do and see here in Red Larch. It is penned in the common tongue, but doesn't seem to be hand written. Some of the letters are obviously askew and the ink has smeared in places, either from the device it was printed with or the boys sweaty palms. The box of text on the bottom of the paper says something about being printed in the city of Waterdeep. Interesting.

OOC:

Welcome to Red Larch! Feel free to roleplay as appropriate, get lunch, etc. I'll move things along when everyone has had a chance to make a couple posts, but for now feel free to take liberty with the scene: servers bring drinks and food and that sort of thing. Feel free to take any actions you or your character sees fit, although for now just take 10 on everything so we don't get bogged down rolling right away. If it's a hostile action (breaking and entering, fighting, etc.), please roll as appropriate, although obviously these sorts of things aren't encouraged presently.

DO NOT START POSTING IN THIS THREAD UNTIL YOU ARE TOLD TO START!

As sun beats down upon his neck and tiny beads of sweat drip down his back, Cades mood continues to sour, Finally, I am almost free of this infernal contraption and its sadistic driver. I am quite sure he purposely hit that last rut. Three days stuck on the road in this wagon and the driver has never smiled once, and has barely said a word as well. Fortunately the entire trip wasn’t misery as there were several interesting people in the caravan and he learned some their stories. Although, I am worried about a couple of the people in the caravan, especially the young one Vaneros, I think he might be touched in the head as I've caught him talking to himself on more than one occasion. Cade is knocked from his thoughts as the wagon hits another rut. "Ugh.. what" the fool did it again The wagon has hardly come to a halt before Cade jumps down. He turns toward the teamster with a frown and a short wave, mumbling "Good Riddance." I am glad to be done with that acerbic fellow, now first a meal and then a job.

He looks at the town and wonders, What the future will hold. Cades almost makes it two steps when a young boy shoves a flyer in to his hands. As he reads the parchment this is exactly what I needed. Hmmm , Illuskan cuisine, that sounds perfect and he makes his way towards The Swinging Sword Inn. Along the way his mood improves as he stretches his legs and greets the passing townsfolk.

One door north of the Allfaiths Shrine stands the Swinging Sword. The inn is a three-story stone structure, crowned by a steep slate roof that bristles with many chimneys. A signboard juts out over the door, hanging from chains. It’s a ten-foot-long carved wooden scimitar emblazoned with the inn’s name in red paint on both sides. An inn yard with stables and outbuildings lies behind the building. The one-story kitchen annex at the back of the inn, currently out of commission due to a fire. Right now, cooking is rudimentary and done out in the yard, on grills flanking the bread ovens.

Molok finally makes it to the town and finds himself standing in the common at noon. The smells from a couple of places set his mouth to watering. A little human stands near him, muttering to himself. Cade

"Greetings human. I am Molok of the Granite Fist tribe. Are you native to this town?"

Before he can get an answer, a youth steps in and hands him a small piece of paper, then scurries off to hand more papers to other people standing around.

Narnel catches up to the Caravan a day out from Red Larch. He spends most of the journey towards the rear of the group, listening to the singing and storytelling of Cade.

Of all of these travelers, I likely will identify best with this storyteller. He will not be at a loss for words, and will certainly keep the conversation flowing.

Narnel was also quite fascinated by the Goliath, Molok. He had read about them, but never actually seen one in person.

Mayhap this colossus can keep everyone's attention while I continue to meld into the background to pursue the tasks that have drawn me here.

As the caravan pulls into the center of town, the smells from outside the Swinging Sword make Narnel's mouth water. He accepts the flyers from the youth, and he eyes Cade to determine what everyone will do next. He casually reads the flyers as he walks near Cade and Molok. He motions towards the cook fires.

Good day Cade, Molok. I could use something to eat. Shall, we?

”Hail and well met, it is nice to see some familiar faces” this should be interesting he thinks as he considers his companions and their calm and quiet demeanors. With a wry grin he says,”With the state of the kitchens it looks like Illuskan is off the menu, but let us go in and see what they have” Cade marks the faces of the patrons and checks for ways to exit the Inn in hurry if need be and takes the largest table he can find, I wonder wear Keaton is he doesn’t seem like one to miss a party, he laughs at the thought of Molok and Narnel letting loose, and places his lute in a chair so that it is visible for the Inn Keeper to see. The place has definitely seen better times, with its kitchen out of sorts, perhaps I can use that to my advantage he considers. Looking at his companions he says,”I hope you boys are hungry?’ and as he waits for the server he continues the conversation With Molok and Narnel, What brings you two to Red Larch, I’ll bet there is an interesting story.’

Well my lady, I am here, what next? she thinks, hoping some inspiration strikes, when nothing does she sighs, glances over the leaflet and decides that a drink and some food is in order, she'll worry about what to do later.

A few folk seem to be heading into the 'Swinging Sword', keeping a slight distance she follows.

As you make your way inside the main room of the Swinging Sword a few patrons sit around drinking. You notice very little in the way of food has been ordered. The inn has a very attentive staff and you are immediately waved to by the woman behind the counter. A serving girl immediately comes over to see if she can be of assistance to the new arrivals.

Molok wanders into the building where the others have gone. He looks for a suitable chair, and seeing none shrugs and takes a seat on the floor. He watches the others to see how they handle ordering food, before he simply copies whatever it was that Cade ordered.

"I will have the same as him!" he announces in a slightly louder-than-needed voice.

Molok's entrance into the Swinging Sword draws the attention of the few patrons in the establishment and a few silent whispers if only for a brief time. It is clear that his kind is an unusual sight in Red Larch. In fact looking around the establishment all the locals that are here seem to be human except for a few that just arrived on the latest caravan into town.

Keaton closes his book and neatly packs away his things into his backpack, and puts his shoes and socks back on.  The caravan would be pulling into Red Larch any minute and he did not want to waste any time missing any sights.  He spins himself around and continues to float behind the wagon cross-legged.

Hmm, let's see if Cade and that big fella want to have a bite to eat.  They did not seem to have big plans to do around here, and they are good company.

Keaton stands up, still floating, when the wagon comes to a stop.  He floats higher into the sky and scans the caravan for the bard and big guy.  What luck, they are standing together.  Keaton lowers himself down to the ground and walks over to the driver.

Morris, thank you so much for letting me hitch to your wagon.  I hope your baby is born soon and healthy,  I will keep you in my thoughts friend.

Keaton gives the wagoner a silver coin, and a firm handshake. Morris gives him a handful of purple carrots and wishes him safe journey.

Keaton makes his way to Cade and Molok as they view the open street before them.  His entrance is announced by the crunching of carrots, and he stands in formation with the other two looking outwards to the street.

Wait, did Molok just call Cade human?  I like it/him/her, refreshing to see someone honestly friendly.

You fellas interested in getting a meal? This rabbit food will not last me too long.

As soon as he carelessly throws the leafed stubby end of his finished carrot to the road a little urchin stuffs a paper into his hand.

Tourist traps.  Wait, did they actually trade mark the "Gateway to the North (tm)"?  Really? Commercialism has made its way far out into country.

As he complains to himself about the shameless commercialism of Red Larch he searches the flyer for coupons.

Keaton will give a nod to the other elves that have joined the group. He follows the flow of the group to the tavern and tries to get a seat that will allow for the best people watching view. He sits down and gets comfortable.

Well met new comers from the caravan. I am Keaton pleasure to make your acquaintance.

Gives a warm friendly gesture to the group.

When the waitress arrives he asks what she recommends for both food and drink.

The serving girl that comes over to answer Keaton's request can not be more than eighteen. While plain looking by human standards she has a charming personality and a lot of pep to her step.

As she listens to Keaton ask her what she recommends her eyes drop and she shrugs. "Well the kitchen is out of order... AGAIN ... third fire in the last three months. So I would recommend, the fresh baked bread. Right out the bread ovens, however only white is available, non of that fancy brown stuff like over at the Helm across the street. Other than that we have got grilled local venison. And after that we have ale, elven brandy, dwarven stout..." and she continues to list a fine selection of alcoholic beverages.

As if on cue she throws in "Rooms are 1 gold per night which includes 2 meals and 4 ales. Shared bunk rooms that hold up to 6 are 1 electrum piece per night per person and include 2 meals but no ale. If you need cheaper there is a boarding house in town that specializes in that sort of thing."

Finishing her obvious prepared pitch you notice the very attractive human woman behind the counter shoot the serving girl a stern look when she mentioned the fires, the Helm and the boarding house. Obviously the woman behind the counter is also the proprietor of this establishment.

As the serving girl comes over Cade orders ”Whatever you have cooking on the grill outside will be fine, along with some bread and cheese” and considers for a second also a round of Ale for me and my companions, the Dwarven for me, as long as it doesn't have a bitter aftertaste.” While the others are ordering Keaton enters the Inn and sits down at the table and orders also. who is it that just walked in, he recognizes her from the caravan but can place her name right away. He remembers and calls, ”Laial, come over and join us.”

Kaylessa has offered the party 50 gold pieces to investigate a place called Lance Rock.

"If you can call three fires in three months a run of bad luck then you have stronger faith than I. Something strange is afoot, but we can't find the cause of them. It's like the fires start out of thin air." She says in response to Cade's question.

Putting her finger on her chin and looking as if she has had a thought she continues answering Cade's questions "As for me well I have heard many tales about fogs that persist in the Sumber Hills even in bright sunlight, and sudden gusts of hot wind sweeping west out of the hills where breezes have always been cold. There have been more violent sights, too, such as sudden bolts of lightning stabbing up from the hills into a clear sky."

“Fell magic” Kaylessa terms it, "But I will admit that was an opinion shared with me, and I have seen none of this myself."

"I have also noticed some Red Larchers looking both frightened and furtive, and tersely turning aside innocent queries." she sighs.

"Of course I have my own theory about the source of Red Larch’s recent troubles: you see it’s all related to an evil presence at Lance Rock. Neither the constable nor the town elders have helped me, nor do they believe my theory, so I am personally willing to offer you 50 gp if you would like to investigate Lance Rock and make sure no sinister forces are lurking there." she offers.

"And if you take me up on it, I wouldn't go alone if I was you." she states as a warning of caution.

"As far as other work goes, the constable is looking for someone to take care of a banditry problem up along the Cairn Road. Maybe he could use your help. You never know. You look like the type of group that might be able to handle it." she offers as she takes a seat at the table.

Unfamiliar with the workings of human settlements, Kenna had a hard time finding a place to leave the mule she was keeping between herself and the rest of the caravan for most of the way to the small town, even the strange pamphlet that little boy gave her did not help much. She first thought maybe the con-stable would be what she was looking for, only to be told that the inn offers stabling. Having secured the stoic creature she made her way over to the Swinging Sword.

Entering the door, the small fur-clad half-elf girl spots some familiar faces, in conversation with a local woman, but silently makes her way to a corner seat. Perhaps I should just set up camp outside of town. There's plenty to eat there too, for those who know where to look. And grass aplenty, the mule would probably like it better than that dried out substitute in that shack.
She patiently waits for one of the tavern girls, avoiding eye contact with anyone else in the room and fiddling with the large carved fang tied to her wrist.

As the coach comes to a hold, Vaneros lowers his backpack to the ground and hops off of it with a faint sigh. While he hands a silver piece to the coachman, some southerner with very little interest in higher conversation, but even more so in games of chance, his free hand tries to find his pipe in his left pocket. Of course it isn't there, lost about two hours after leaving Waterdeep. Can't believe I made the whole journey without at least a drag! Vaneros thinks to himself, before being interrupted by a child stuffing some sort of pamphlet in his hands.

Fine dining, yeah, we'll see. Foodstuff... no ... Clothing ... Constabulary, mh, should keep out of that one's way ... Damn it, Berren isn't on the list.

Once he is finished reading, Vaneros notices the other travellers have already made their way to the Swinging Sword. Let's just hope they have enough rooms!

As Vaneros enters the common room, he is a little confused he doesn’t at least get a few strange looks. His mother's blood runs strong in him and this far up in the north, the colour of his skin sometimes turns a few heads. Well, I guess a living giant rock thing beats an exotic human every day. Not to mention a Genasi.

"Isn't it odd how we all ended up here? Arriving all at the same time?" He says just loud enough for Laial to hear it after walking in just behind her. He waits a few moments to see her reaction. "I don't think we spoke during our voyage. The name's Vaneros and I'm here because someone told me not to be."

Kaylessa has offered the party 50 gold pieces to investigate a place called Lance Rock.

"Lance Rock is about 15 miles southwest of here. Let me mark it on your visitors map for you." she says as she ask Cade for his map.

Details and Map

"There you go. You can't miss it really, it's a prominent landmark, Lance Rock is a slender stone monolith that juts up out of the plains a few miles west of the Long Road. It stands only about 25 feet high, but the land nearby is flat and open, so it can be seen from miles away on a clear day. Lance Rock is made of granite that doesn’t match any other stone nearby, and looks like it was dropped right out of the sky." She says as if describing something out of a book.

"Fell magic, I tell you. That is what is behind all these strange happenings." she adds.

"Anyway, sorry to go off on a tangent there about it, never been there myself but plenty of people talk about it and I have seen it from a distance. It is off the road but the land is flat so it should only take you about five hours to get there on foot." she said and at this point she realized she was rambling and caught control of herself and stopped her long speech.

Keaton places his order for venison and dwarven ale, also adding the bread and cheese. When Kaylessa starts naming places he pulls out that little pamphlet map.

I Guess that rock isn't too far away for a walk. Maybe convince the big guy to come around with. Oh, maybe I should ask if Cade wants company, it is kind of his job offer. Sure why not, I kinda want to go.

Keaton looks at Cade and speaks in a matter of factly type voice.

I am game to go with you if you do not want to go check that rock out alone.

Keaton then points with his eyes to the big guy, trying to induce innuendo.

If you are looking for a few people maybe others would be interested.

Generous sip of ale.

Kenna startles at the large man suddenly getting up and calling ut for her. Laial orders food quietly, and tries to stay out of the way, but she can't help but overhear news of disturbances at Lance Rock.

Looking to Keaton and Cade, she coughs a little before speaking.
If you be not adverse to a little company heading out to that rock, I'd like to come along. I can assure you I won't be a bother and will put my skills to the use of the group.

Looking around the table Cade says, ”Yes, that's the spirit, the more the merrier. I see a fine tale here in the making, with seven companions true.” He grins and in his best stage voice says, ”We should make it official though and come up with a name for the companionship!” A true smile crosses his face as he thinks Is this what my mother felt like when she first started out.

"You do not need to name everything to make it true, perhaps our companionship is but fleeting, perhaps we forge something greater... Who is to tell what the future brings.
Perhaps you could call us a spark or a glimmer of greatness to come - I'm sure you can find more poetic ways to say so, you appear to be quite the wordsmith."

"Okay, okay we will hold off on the name"Cade relents"And I don't think we should just rush off blindly either. After we are done eating I think someone should go and talk to the Constable and ask about those bandits, the rock, and his take on the fires. Another should go to the all faiths shrine and ask the same questions. I don't want to be taken by surprise." Cade Scratches his chin, this is just like planning a smuggling operation "Yet another should go over to the Helm at High Sun and observe things and perhaps ask some questions."Cade considers for a moment"Okay, I think someone should ask to see the kitchen and see if the can determine how the fires started. I also need a volunteer to question the Inn staff. Finally, I need someone to go find that boy who passes out the fliers and bring him here, i want to talk to him."He smiles"We should all meet up back here for a late dinner and decide our next course of action"he concludes as he finishes off his Ale.

Keaton's eyes grow wide as Cade makes a large list of jobs for people.

I will go look at the burnt down kitchen, and talk with the cooks.

Very nonchalantly, Keaton will take a small chunk of ice out of his belt pouch and put it in his ale, after it sits a minute he will return it back to the pouch. He seems to enjoy his drink better after it has chilled.

I am going to get a room, does anybody want to share and split the cost?

Next Action:

After finishing his meal, making reservations for a room, and waiting for the group to move out; he will make his way over to the tavern keeper and ask if he can go and look at the burned down building. Keaton will explain he is a spell caster and may be able to see if there is foul magic at play in the inn's problems. He will be straight forward and business like, not letting Kaylessa's beauty distract him (at the moment). If he is granted permission he will go right away.

"Oh, it was nothing. I was just wondering how it is, that I find myself here in such fine and worldly company," Vaneros replies with a faint smile. "I might have lost something on the road and I'd like to go get a replacement before we venture forth. I think that one Helvur Tarnlar, fine clothing and accessories might have what I need. On the west side of the Long Road, just south of the inn’s stable yard, stands what looks like a grand stone mansion. Two wide wooden doors painted with the symbols of many gods stand open day and night. Inside is a plain chapel with a stone altar.

Looking in the door you currently see a priest of Tempus alongside a woman who appears to be a devotee of Sune standing down by the alter in conversation with one another. No other townsfolk appear to be here at the moment.

Tarnlar’s is the only place to buy quality clothing for a hundred miles around. The square two-story building stands at the intersection of the Long Road and the Cairn Road. Its signboard is painted with the images of a well-dressed lord and lady, one on each side of the board. Ornate scrollwork iron bars protect the windows.

As Vaneros approached he could see four small children that were playing out front. (two boys and two girls, aged seven to ten). They eyed Vaneros curiously as he passed them and entered the establishment.

Upon entering the bell on the door rang as Vaneros eyed the goods here for sale and they were all of the finest quality, suits, robes, fine leather boots, hats and dresses it was a display of the finest craftsmanship.

Upon hearing him enter a man comes rushing from the backroom of the shop. Without even noticing Vaneros first you can hear him say "This is how aristocrats wear their boots in Neverwinter" putting on a air of gentility, haughtily explaining some of the boots that Vaneros was just eyeing.

Upon seeing Vaneros the merchant begins to speak "May I help you?" the man says curiously. You notice he is wearing a signet ring but the emblem is facing palm side down so you can not tell what the ring is of. He is dressed in fine clothes and smells strongly of expensive perfume.

Kaylessa has offered the group 50 gold pieces in exchange for investigating a place called Lance Rock.

Kaylessa leads the two men, Keaton and Narnel through a hall and into the burned kitchen area, the walls are black with soot as well as the ceiling, most of the burned equipment has already been removed except for a heavily charred oaken table that sits to one side and a few scattered and blackened pots and pans. The room smells strongly of fire and ash.

"Well here it is, at least what is left of it." she says as she points around. "The walls and ceilings are still intact, just took out the contents and the backdoor, fire has never made it past that point. It just burns itself out or we have been lucky enough to get it put out first." she continues. Pointing out the space where the partially burned back door had been taken down, you can notice right outside where two cooks are setup and are currently grilling venison. Beyond that you can see the inn's stables and a one-eyed man with a red eye patch tending to the horses.

"Very well, if there is no other questions, I will leave you to look around, I must get back to the front." she then turns to leave the kitchen area.
