Raising an eyebrow at Helgash's question, Onnello could think of several reasons a man would follow a woman late at night and not tell his friends. But they were talking about Syl, so he kept silent and waited for Nivian.

Waiting till he boys had moved past, Naomi brought up the rear. She knew that with Thistle moving in and out of the woods, the farm animals would want to stay ahead of her, preventing any stragglers. Waiving at the farmers as they moved past, she hadn't remembered so many of the farms being abandoned. Having witnessed first hand what could happen, just the day before, she resisted the urge to let her mind wonder on the topic.

As they approached the town, she saw Hamish turn the plow horse off the road heading for a fallen tree. Turning that way, as he offered to stay with the animals. Nodding, she tossed the mules lead rope over a branch and let the animal start to graze. Looking back to town she pointed to the side of the street where the office for the watch was. "The office is that direction, or at least it was. Should we take our prisoner there straight away?"

Hey GM would Naomi have any more info on the location we might find the fellow in charge of taking this prisoner"

lol, gosh folks, it's been a while since she was actually in town. When she visits grandma, she takes the outer-belt around, so she's more familiar with the suburbs than town itself...

Waking to the sound of Ambrose barking, Leo begins to stir around covered in some heavy material, like a tent had collapsed in on him. he had to pause, he'd gone to sleep in the girls tree-house, under the brown wool blanket they had there. The heavy fabric he lay under was the same ugly brown. Blinking twice he looked at his hand, quickly crawling out from the giant tarp, he looked at his hands. They were blue again! he quickly reached up to his face, his ears were their wonderful pointyness once again as well. Looking for his pack and his gear he saw his Lady-bug shoes with their silver buckles. He paused, never realizing how much he missed his ladybug shoes. Snatching up his orange socks he slips his shoes on and happily dresses eventually putting on his silky purple jacket.

Once dressed, and his pack high on his shoulders, Leo realized the cunomdrom he was in. First he pushed the giant blue flamed torch out the door and down to the ground, counting in seconds how long it took to fall. Then, disassembling the pully system used to raise and lower the food box he looped the rope around the just-the-right-sized corgi and slowly lowered the mount down to the ground, quickly sliding down the rope after him. Pausing long enough to take out his spider-silk length of rope he tied one end to Ambrose tail and the other end to the torch, so they could drag it to Sansaárë's and Tannakin's house.

Once there he dismounted Ambrose, and striking a pose, stood out front and called in his high-pitched voice Think 'Alladin' when the Jeanie was a bee buzzing around Alladin's head. "Ladies, comest out, thou shant believe what wonderful things have happened!

Raising an eyebrow as Hamish was going to remove the archer's fingers, Naomi remembered the boy she'd known. Even then he'd easily gotten frustrated when one of the older girls would cheat. Apparently, serving with 'Riverguard' had given him a perspective on what should be done when he saw injustice. As Elgrin stepped in, Naomi gave a light smile. Elgrin was correct, there was a right way. They had determined to take the prisoner to the watch in Fairhill and they should. It was good that Elgrin was willing to stop Hamish. But it was also good that Hamish was willing to execute justice, they would need that if they were going to deal with the unknown in the wilds.

Watching as Hamish walked outside to 'cool' off. Naomi stopped leaning on the doorframe, wondering about how to proceed. Nodding as Elgrin approached the prisoner reiterated the plan and asking questions that needed answering. As she moved back outside, she smiled hearing Jalros and Guthlag supporting the priest. Catching up with Gubble, she nudged the halflings pack, smiling, "Looks like you'll get that 'Band' you wanted." The smile weakened a little as she walked through the yard of the dead family. "A pity the cost of it, yeah."

Seeing Hamish limp about, it reminded her; Calling out she pointed at the plow horse, "Hey Hamish, your still wounded, why don't you ride the horse." As she called out she wondered about the captain of the guard in Fairhill. They had a priest of the 'Church of the Divine Right' and a member of the Cities 'Riverguard.' Maybe the Captain would give them some kind of 'writ' to hunt down the ones who did this. Shrugging to herself, it might make things easier, but wouldn't matter; it seemed like that was what they were going to do either way.

Ok, I was going to put this in a PM, but I decided that wasn't fair to Hamish or the rest of you. Since I started the conversation on discussion it's only fair that I say it out loud type it for you all to read.

First off, Hamish your last several posts have been some of the best writing I've seen on the boards for quite a while. I think the imagery of Hamish's inner turmoil and the way you've described his actions have been top notch.

Presently, my life is more stressful than it's been in an age, and I'm sure some of that is bleeding over, and for that I'm sorry.

I got focused on my/Naomi's desire to 'prove the group is good enough to be a band' that I ignored the quality RP going on.

Hamish is fine as Chaotic Good, I was just surprised that once he was through with the interrogation that he was willing to, what I thought was, torture. I don't think I read it well enough the first time to follow it, but when I reread it, I did realize that it was a punishment; but I had already decided I didn't like it.

I was quick to jump to a conclusion and I shouldn't have. And if I had questions, I should have PM'd Hamish instead of spouting off. Sorry Hamish it wasn't right.

Please accept my apology, after I stepped away from the computer a bit and focused on other stuff, I realized how petty I was being. I'll try to be more thoughtful the next time and realize I'm responding to stuff that you folks have nothing to do with.

Realizing Kast had asked where Pachemu was, Seamus blinked. It seemed something had happened to the pig, and he'd missed it. It seemed that the winged things had something to do with it. Apparently, he wasn't the only one who thought so, because Val started using her 'I'm the Expert' voice.

Weaving together an amazing fabrication with enough truth holding it together that it was believable. Izomandakus, the offended transmuter, sounded truly intimidating as he started asking questions, probably in an attempt to both get his pig back. and possibly the name of the room's decorator. The was certainly looked like the type of decoration Izomandakus would enjoy.

Not certain what to do he noticed Kast peeking about, so Seamus looked about for anything odd as well.

Hearing Kast mention Brodert's book, Seamus wondered if he'd give Kast and Izomandakus credit, since they were doing all the discoveries. As he pondered, he followed kast and Val down the Karzoug's hallway. Chuckling at Val's comment about themes and obsessions, Seamus pauses looking at the door, wondering what kind of theme needed dozens of precious gems to decorate a door. Moving towards the door, Seamus smiles, realizing that Kast and Izomandakus wouldn't be able to make their discoveries if he wasn't there to open the doors.

Moving around, looking at the door and its center keyhole, he pauses, turning back. "It's a trap." He points to the opposite wall, "It would blast you clear over there." Looking around some more he finds a secret door, turning to the others "If you even touch the 'bejeweled door it goes off, and the jewels aren't even worth the effort." He points towards the hidden door, "Follow me, just be careful not to touch the big door."

Moving cautiously through the hidden door, Seamus proceeds down the hallway, "Hey Kast, keep that light near."

Is Kast air walking yet? Oh, Seamus is taking 10 on everything

Hearing the burn riders laugh, Usawoti is about to say something when he, along with the riders, notices Krojun's glare. Nodding at the warrior, he continues along with the brave dwarf.

As they come to the zigzagging paths, he considers dismounting Mop outside the spikes, but decides that the stallion would be safe in the camp. Dismounting at the edge of the circle he leads the horse further in, raising an eyebrow at the chieftains bluntness, until he remembers that Thousand Bones viewpoint is shared by very few.

As Torsten shows the mark to the chieftain and explains his purpose, Usawoti clears his throat, stepping forward slightly, he speaks. "He has come under Thousand Bones direction. I will be joining him." He looks around at the warriors sitting around the fire. "His fight is my fight."

Hearing combat ahead, Usawoti begins to run down the hallway, his soft shoanti boots making only slightly more noise than his robe of infinite twine did rubbing against the elven chain mail underneath. As he ran he slipped his right hand into his klar, hanging from a leather thong and drew his Earth breaker from it's frog on the back of his thick leather belt. Coming to the doorway of a small room he stops seeing four red armored figures attacking the dwarf he'd seen competing in the sredna with Krojun. Usawoti realized this was the dwarf Thousand Bones had sent him for. As he halted in the doorway, he used the Deathwatch Eyes to see what kind of condition the dwarf and his foes were in.

Then lifting his left fist, earth breaker in hand, he pointed into the room and spoke in Necril. "മരണ ഊർജ്ജം അയയ്ക്കുക, കുള്ളനെ രക്ഷിക്കുക" As the dark energy oozed from the ring, Usawoti turns his face towards the dwarf, his grey eyes shining, his aquiline nose casting a shadow over his thin lips. Tann's writing class stuff:
Tannakin Skinker wrote:
@Leo, do you have a favorite Burroughs short story or one you think would be fun to show students? I'm trying to go for breadth more than depth at this point in the quarter, but even with that I don't have much Burroughs on the lists... partly because other than The Land That Time Forgot I'm not sure I've read a lot. The reading list never stops growing.

Hmmmm, So my favorite character was 'John Carter of Mars' I was terribly disappointed with the movie; Carter, a 'southern' gentleman who was honest, loyal and forthright, was turned into a self-centered rogue. Ok, I'll stop whining now.

Obviously, Burroughs most well-known work was Tarzan, but after reading the first twelve of the twenty-four books, the stories start to repeat. Oddly I really liked one of his first stories, which wasn't printed until he became famous. 'The outlaw of Torn.' But that probably has to do more with my age at the time and the medieval semi-historical setting.

What makes this harder, he wasn't known for his 'short stories.' Pretty much all I read was novels. By the time I graduated high school I had more than sixty. Yeah, at one point in time it became a quest to find in print copies. This was the 70's so very different from today :)

I wasn't familiar with any short stories, so I spent most of the morning looking for one and then reading it. I found The Resurrection of Jimber Jaw It was printed well after he was an established writer. I would recommend reading it, but I don't know if it's good enough to add to your curriculum.

It does have the repeating themes common in Burroughs work, both good and bad. The writing style is common for Burroughs, the author being told a story by someone he's come to know and trust, then telling it to us. You'll see this repeated in both Tarzan and John Carter and if I remember many others. Other common Burroughs Tropes: The noble Savage, stereotypes based on race/country/class, vague pseudo-scientific fiction (sort of a precursor to modern science fiction) and a story about a man's driving passion for a particular woman.

What it misses is any real development of characters, primary or secondary. He basically relies on the tropes that have already been established, either by himself or other writers of his day. More importantly it's missing the vibrant world building you get from his novels. Whether it's the Jungles of Africa, Mars, the Moon, or Pellucidar (hollow earth). You begin to see a little of it in the valley they 'land in' but not the full breadth you get in a Novel. What set Burroughs apart was his world building and his commitment to character ideals that helped create the tropes we see now.

What may be worth noting is the effect that he had on the writers who built upon his legacy.

"Edgar Rice Burroughs was, and is, the most influential writer, bar none, of our century." Ray Bradbury

I apologize that Leo doesn't drag people along like some of my other characters. but playing a support roll and not being super familiar with the system yet, I figure better to follow along.

Not really sure what constitutes the definition of 'art' Elathras shrugs his shoulders as the Boggards attack. 'I'll give it to Elena, she doesn't give up easy.' Smiling to himself as Elena tries to speak with the Boggards even as they advance, Elathras dodges the frog-like creature's attack. Stepping back as Bharak splatters one of the Boggards with his hammer, Elathras calls out, "Well struck Bharak!"

Hearing noise from deeper in the cave he notices the 'chief' charging towards the figth. Resetting his feet he thrusts the cold iron ranseur at the green boggard that had attacked him.

Hearing Izomandakus talking about the mayor, Seamus perks up, thinking about the arrogant Mayor and he jerk major-domo, asking Izomandakus "Wasn't his name Grobaras? Haldmeer Grobaras?"

Breathing a sign, he realizes this conversation could go on forever. Sheathing the rapier and his long knife, Seamus reaches back into his fancy new rucksack and draws out his lute, tuning the instrument as he begins to walk around. He smiles to himself and begins to lightly play one of the happier up-beat hymns of Desna. Frowning, as he looks around the room, he mumbles, "I don't like the acoustics."

'No greater friend hath a Man than his loyal steed?' Reading the quote aroun the stone box, Wulfgar quips, "This fellow must not have had many ..." Before he can finish the statement, he realizes the skeleton horse is moving towards him. Barely able to dodge the hooves, Wulgar sees the blunt hammer of his friends Bec de Corbin swing past his shoulder and smash into the skeleton. Shifting Wulfgar realized that Ardran had stepped directly behind him. So, stepping back to the left, Wulfgar joined him as he slashed at the skeletal remains with his glaive.

Scratching his head, Elathras follows Elana, asking; "So If I understand correctly, Both of these groups hate the lizards. The one were going to see is mad at the gray maidens for not helping fight. The group we just left is happy with the gray maidens for giving them a good plan." He shakes his head. "Sounds like we need a third group of Frogs to speak with." He shrugs, "Or speak with the Gray Maidens and have them convince the boggards to cooperate." He pauses, "Why are the Gray Maidens here anyway?"

As they move through the caves notes the large wall carving of the multi headed frog demon. Smiling, Elathras points to the carving and jests, "Look Elena fellow artists, but I don't think their fans of Shelyn"

As the mouth of the cave widens, Elathras spread out a little so the three of them, Elena, Bharak and himself could bring weapons to bear. Seeing the boggards almost as quickly as the boggards saw them, Elathras furrows his brow and the loud sound. Unable to read any of the stuff written on the wall, Seamus ignores it. Focusing on the door, he eventually asks, "Does anyone recognize the three-eyed dog?" As Izomandakus speaks the name of the creature, Seamus nods as if he knows who or what Lamashtu was.

As the voice speaks, Seamus raises an eyebrow, kneeling down to Pachemu, he shrugs as he scratches behind her ear. "Shows what he knows, after Vals help I'm not tired at all." While Kast and Izomandakus speak with the accented fellow, Seamus looks from one to the other; pointing to the door while shrugging his shoulders, wondering if they should proceed.

Moving towards the double doors with Izomandakus, Seamus pauses watching Val strike her pose. As she and Izomandakus talk about the art his mind wanders to his own music. He had always played to entertain himself, curious as to what sounds and songs he could produce on the lute. He enjoyed performing for people, it was an easy way to convince people to like him, without making him feel like he was trying to be something he wasn't. And the money wasn't bad either.

But watching Val, hearing the underlying cynicism of art critics, he didn't know if he could handle being rejected by big city 'experts' Wondering when his music had turned from something he did for himself, to something he did to please other people?

Shaking his head, he focused again on the here-and now, Joining Izomandakus he gestured toward the doors, "Shall we take a look?"

Not sure about what can happen because of the will save, once everyone is ready or able, Seamus will take 10(37/43) on perception to inspect the door and take 10(37/43) on disable device dealing with any locks or traps

Hey GM Kaz, first of all, thanks for attempting to run the game. It was fun dusting Angus off and remembering why I built him.

I know your posting in, and starting in, other games, so it seems you've moved on from this one. Which is fine, I realize running a game is much more effort than playing in one, or several for that matter.

As a favor, would you mind moving the game to inactive, it would help clean up my, and everyone else's, que a bit.

Folks it was a fun time while it lasted. I hope to play with you all in the future. Again, GM Kaz, thanks for giving it a go.

I've been really enjoying Elena's personality, it makes me think about Elathras more, which is good.

One of the problems I have with starting at 'higher' levels' is I tend to develop part of the personality through RP. I'll set certain personality traits, habits and quirks at first level, but a lot of how my characters develop is based on who and how they interact with in lower levels. So, starting at 5th level Elathras was still very two dimensional, so Elena's prodding has caused me to develop him.

Sadly, I hate rolling on playing characters. It feels too much like PVP. I always thought the skills were for dealing with NPC's and the characters should work things out the old-fashioned way. Also, to be completely honest, since I type out a lot of his thoughts, you have as good an idea as I do. I'm just making this stuff up as I go along...

Edit: Sorry, if that came off sounding Jerkish. Feel free to read Elthras' backstory and such. I'm happy if Elena comes up with her own conclusions. We can RP it out in game.

As Kast took the time to explain all the adventures the group had been through, Seamus pulled his lute out of the fancy backpack he had purchased in Magnimar, in what seemed like months before. Sitting down on the pew, he began to play. Matching the chords, rhythm and key with the different parts of the story.

As Kast finished the story, and Izomandakus began answering questions. Seamus paused putting the lute back away, then looked at the Mayor shrugging. "The giants were a threat. But Karzoug he's the ancient Thassilonian wizard demi-god come back to life that was using the giants as his errand boys." He then looks towards the priest. "Who apparently wants to reclaim his ancient kingdom." Seamus furrows his brow and shrugs, while he looks at the sheriff, "Or at least that's my guess based on what we've seen."

He then looks at this friends "So we going down the sinkhole or what? If not, I'm going to 'Crackjaws' and having a drink."

GM_DBH after Elena takes a couple hours healing the Troglodytes, about what time of day is it?

'Should we talk to them first?' Blinking his eyes at Elena, as if she may be speaking a foreign language, Elathras answering honestly, "I don't know how to speak Boggard."

Trying not to be insensitive, but speaking honestly, "Honestly, if it weren't for telling the 'princess' we'd try and find a local 'provider' I wouldn't have talked to the Troglodytes." He gives a light shrug. "I'm actually surprised it worked. But since the Troglodytes were losing the war, that might be what motivated them to side with us."

Furrowing his brow, he adds. "Do you think the Boggards, who seem to be winning, will be as quick to change?" Still looking at the questioning Elena, he sighs. "I'm willing to go with you if you want to try."

Watching as she goes to help the Troglodytes, Elathras finally follows, leaving his polearm leaning against a wall to try and be less intimidating. As she works, he ponders how different she is from the 'healers' he'd known in the Hell Knights. Men and woman willing to heal their own and considered it a kindness to give a quick death to their wounded enemy.

As Elena continued to work, Elathras found himself bringing fresh water and removing old and soiled bandages; as the half-elf uses some of the same burning herbal mixture on the lizards that she had used on him. As they worked the Troglodytes told them of the surrounding environs, Elathras would take the time to translate for the benefit of those who didn't speak 'Draconic.'

As Elena finishes her ministrations and Axton and Bharak return from their scouting, Elathras asks, "Do we want to deal with one of these monsters the lizards warned us about, or should we go speak with the Boggards?"
