I've read somewhere (or maybe this is just a very common houserule) that aside from certain spells that have specific visual effects-- fireball, color spray, summon monster, etc.-- the visual representation of your spell can kinda be whatever you want so long as the mechanics are the same. Like, verbal and somatic components have to be words and gestures that are recognizable in-universe as spell components (you can't just say "My verbal components are in Elvish so it just sounds like I'm talking") but the actual words and gestures your character performs are up to you.
In fact, describing how your components and effects manifest themselves can be a very fun part of roleplaying a spellcaster. Is it a quick Magicians-esque finger gesture? Is it a flamboyant, artistic sweep of your arms? Does your voice change to mimic your god/dess when you chant a divine ritual? Etc.
I don't know that it's an official rule; if anywhere, I'd imagine it's contained in the 'Rule of Fun' general best practice - that said, I think it might also have been codified in one of the Gamemastering sections of the Core Rulebook or some such. I do agree that the flavor is an important aspect of role-playing most characters, especially in a fluff-heavy medium like PbP, so long as it doesn't have a rules impact.

With the caveat that Silent and Still Spell ought to be useful in disguising your intent - so no making spellcasting seem like a casual action without it also being obvious something more's going on - I tend to agree.
Of course, Still and Silent Spell both have more use than that, but I stand by my opinion.

Player: “Jim Darmagic, Lord of Edge, threw back his robes and yelled an incantation so vile that the Gods themselves wept upon hearing it! A flaming skull materialized, silently laughing as it was hurled at the orc orphanage. Upon going threw the door it exploded, sending black flames-“
GM: “Sorry to interrupt but what spell is that?”
Player: “Fireball. I just added some flavor.”
GM: “Oh, alright. Roll 10d6.”
Player: “Uhm…is 10 enough damage…?”

Of course, but at that point, it would be a rules impact in that it would effectively give the players the benefit of a feat they don't have.
I think the 'Rule of Fun' flavor exemption would apply more to situations like, for instance, if a wizard's player read the Prince of Wolves series and decided to replace somatic components with reusable semi-scrolls like Count Jeggare. It wouldn't really be a rules change, since somatic component spells still need a hand free and some ability to manipulate the scrolls, but it could be an interesting piece of fluff that makes a character stand out.

Thank you. I appreciate it. :)

Does my character idea + sheet work?
Whoops! I forgot to reply to you. It doesn't look like your sheet's completed? I don't see much equipment, and you're missing a campaign trait (though I think we agreed ex-Asmodean works?) Other than that, I'd like to hear a bit more concretely what Skreek's backstory is - I think I have the gist of it, but I'd like a summary.
SodiumTelluride: You shut your mouth. A joke, in case that's unclear. If only.
Kintargo GM |
Ironperenti: Understood! As to your question... hm... I think RAW, you couldn't. It says "you gain a single nonmagical item worth no more than 200 gp." That said, I'm not sure I mind, per se. I'm going to lean towards "no" at the moment, but if you get selected, I'll come back to it with a more charitable mind - specifically so I can ask other selected players if they feel it's alright.
Seth: No need to apologize. You're good.
Eudamonia Solanis |
This is Giant Halfling's (unfinished) submission.
Euda (YOU-duh) is an aspiring actress and singer whose long practice at hiding her heritage has granted her skill at lying and disguise, both of which have served her well (and grown) during her time in the theater. I haven't had a chance to write up her background yet (I'm hoping to get to that later today), but she was recently cast to a major role in the upcoming production of Huntress of Heroes at the Kintargo Opera House and was furious when the oppressive, overstepping, new government shut it down (so furious, in fact, that she joined the protest to let them know about it).

I made a couple changes to Calvie. I went with Rich Parents so I could start with Sleeves of Many Garments and a healing wand. I figure trying to get those later might raise some eyebrows.
Oh, Calvie is a young actor trying to make a name for themselves in the city's theaters, and definitely making a name for themselves among the nightlife of the city. Really, that's it.
She was tricked into becoming an inquisitor of Calistria.
Calvie comes from a long line of spies, and was trained as such from childhood. Sadly, occasionally spies need to sneak away to a faraway land on a different continent to avoid the consequences of such a life. Their mother did so, choosing Cheliax as the kind of place where it might be profitable to trade in secrets. Her main cover is Calvie, an upcoming actor, as such a role allows her to mingle with a number of people at all social levels. Calvie is genderfluid and uses whatever pronouns people care to offer.
When Barzilai Thrune came to power, her mother was caught in an inconvenient identity and purged. Since then, Calvie has been looking for opportunities for revenge. Still, despite their grief, they still needed to keep up their identity. They may have indulged a bit more than usual in her grief and tried some strange euphoric gas. Somebody said is was concentrated Faerie Dragon Breath. In a strange state of mind, Calvie ran into a muscular gentleman calling out for Callie. She fell into his arms and corrected him, only to find that another woman was calling the man Caely. Something that they all found amusing. Still Callie told her that she wouldn't take poaching her date lightly and required Calvie to swear fealty to her to earn her forgiveness. Calvie did and they spent a pleasant evening together.
Waking up alone, they saw a note reminding them of their obligation and an odd barbed whip. Still feeling odd, Calvie found themselves with a head full of knowledge that shouldn't be. Their family had little talent for magic, but know they found themselves able to do strange tricks.
Yes, Calvie is a kitsune, but this is something she will keep secret at first. She appears human and has +18 to hold that disguise. She's not going to be very combat effective at first, but I may multiclass to help that at some point. However, she is going to be very useful on the social side.

Orrrrr… we theater geeks could band together and have the most talented rebellion of all time?
If that does happen I need to readjust my stats, because oh boy do you take a lot of hits if you are a Skald who is the main frontline.
And I dont plan to go down the "Skald Frontline yesyes!" route of having all the Linnorm death curse rage powers while abusing a wand of summon minor monster. This is a great NPC gimmick, but its not really for player characters imho.

Added my previous story tidbits to Rill's profile, and changed Rill's favored class bonus from +1 HP to the human-paladin favored class bonus of +1 energy resistance (choosing cold).
Gotta build up that cold resistance so she can spearfish in the winter!

Marcus is a Ranger Dandy, raised in Absalom, fled with his now wife to Kintargo due to some serious trade disputes, has lived in Kintargo and worked the social scene for about three years. They have a small villa in the green zone.
Light armor, fencing style of combat, decent social skills, access to parties.

If you're over a certain age, you may have had a copy of the D&D Gazetteer Principalities of Glantri which afaik was one of the first supplements to suggest that how different wizards cast certain spells told you who they'd trained with: Etienne d'Ambreville cast Teleport Other with a few mutterings and a distinctive finger-shake, whereas the Bela Lugosi/Dracula expy (can't remember his name) used dramatic gestures of dismissal and a swirling of his cape.
Apologies. None of this is relevant to your recruitment. But a memory was jogged.

They did a purge of the underground and his Warren was completely eradicated. So he began to work on a way to get back at the humans who ordered this genocide. So he's now an alchemist, working on ways to not only cripple them, but make them paralysed in any form of their government
Skreek was a worshiper of Thisamet, but after the extermination of his entire Warren, he vowed to get his vengeance, so till his vow is met, he follows Ragathiel, hoping for his guidance in his quest to end the Thrunes
Skreek has white fur and is almost OCD when it comes to being clean, not wanting any accidents or perhaps infect innocent people with what he plans to inflict on the regime that seems to completely ignore the plight of the people that according to how he sees it, they should protect.

It's so interesting seeing the characters built in an AP like this where you can't really dump charisma and need to have at least some social and sneaky skills.
I beg to differ sir! Cha 8 is perfectly viable as Adolina shall prove!

Not linked at all... are there any high Cha, skill-point starved paladins looking for an easy job? ;)

Those are the fun ones to play...lol.
Even my Wizards usually double as Rogues.
Although it really is dependant on the Campaign. Urban versus Exploration really.
Playing a Storm Druid in this would be challenging while also amusing rp wise. A group of unruly barbarians (present company notwithstanding) fresh from Up North just got into Kintargo would also be hilarious....
Hmmm.....

One of my alternative ideas was a Kellid merc, out of a job now that the worldwound is closed, and who then got a job at the opera as stunt man, but it would be hard to explain why he is level 1, as travel from worldwound adjacent to Kintargo is pretty dangerous.
Which is honestly often a showstopper, you come up with a funny and unique twist, and then "ok, realistically, how did I survive this at level 1?"

I like the idea. The answer though, could be that he was from Mendev. The World Wound ate his homeland, and his family would be refugees. And from Mendev he took a ship.
For that? Lvl1 is plenty.

I really tried to make a druid myself, because being able to Wild Shape for intrigue situations would be awesome. But I simply could not come up with a reason why a druid would involve themselves in Chelaxian politics.
(That ship has sailed now, I'm quite happy with Linna. Maybe a chance will arise in some other campaign.)

I'd be happy to create more connections between our characters, but I assume we'd do that after Kintargo GM makes their selections. There might be some slight edits to our characters once we know who is playing and who is covering what roles in the party, right?
I felt inspired and decided to write a brief scene taking place the morning of the protest. I've added it to Seannon's profile, but I'll also include it here.
Jasper often works the night shift, guarding the perimeter and watching for vandals, and occasionally doing the digging when his father gets behind on work. Since Barzillai Thrune took power, his administrators have instructed that no new graves are to be sold in the grounds, but there are still the bones of decomposed inhabitants to be removed and transferred to the ossuary or one of the crematoriums out of town, and recently there have been dark hints that the Church of Asmodeus will soon have replacements, so Thrune's servitors have ordered that the plots be made ready.
This morning, Jasper is sitting at the table when Seannon returns inside from her prayers. "Good morning, Jasper," she chirps merrily, not looking at him directly to help him feel comfortable. "I heard there is to be a demonstration today at the Aria Park Plaza." She waits a beat and then continues. "I am thinking of going... I must keep aware of what is happening in our city, after all, and if I am to do as the goddess would desire for the downtrodden and oppressed of Kintargo, I would be well-served to keep my eyes out for allies and enemies alike."
Jasper stares into space, but after a moment he nods to indicate that he has heard her.
"I do not know exactly why the people are assembling," she says carefully, after another long pause, "though I have some ideas. Maybe you do too?" She smiles, and helps herself to a hard-boiled egg and two slices of bread that have been toasting near the fire. As she eats, she watches Jasper, though she does so very circumspectly. She has found that he doesn't like to be stared at, and while he would never harm her, he had gotten in fights with other children when he got agitated. Seannon always treats him with patience and respect, and she believes that the young man appreciates it.
Jasper is silent for a little while, and then says quietly: "Maybe because of the dictum." He nods confidently to himself, as if to say That's probably it, and after a brief moment he adds a bit more forcefully: "Martial law."
Seannon smiles even more broadly. "Ah, that's probably why," she says encouragingly. "A show of resistance from those who oppose the way Thrune rules this city." She pauses to see if Jasper has anything else to add, and when he doesn't, she continues. "It may be dangerous there. The dottari will probably break up anyone loudly protesting, and try to separate groups from each other." She scratches her head, casually. "I will do my best to stay away from troublemakers, but I cannot promise I won't be swept up with the others once the heavy mace comes down. If you and your family don't hear from me in a few days, I might be imprisoned. For your own safety, you shouldn't come looking for me. You know? Trust that I will be okay, and I'll see you soon."
A spasm of fear twists Jasper's features, but he nods again and takes deep breaths. He clasps his hands and bends his head as if in prayer, and Seannon joins him. Then she stands and returns to her room, dressing in her armor and her travel-worn cloak, and packs all of her things into the bag she wears on her back. She leaves through the back door, and makes her way around the estate.
She takes a long, circuitous route to the park, which is not very far away, but she still arrives several hours early. There, she sets herself up on a corner near one of the fountains and some benches and hums to herself. "Care for a song? A song for the lady? One copper a song!" She busks almost out of habit as others begin to arrive, and she moves smoothly through the crowd without obvious purpose, trying to keep tabs on everything happening and doing her best to be near enough to see important events as they develop.

Oof, sorry for the silence, folks. Been a bit busy. I'm not sure that most of what's been said needs my feedback, so here's what I think needs reply.
Eudamonia: Ooh, an Arshea worshipper. I do like the empyreal lords from time to time.
Philo: Seems neat! I'm thinking that her trickster could be Calistria herself, or another worshipper of hers. Depends on how comfortable other players are with direct intervention by deities, if you get selected.
Tambry: I do appreciate the backstory. It's pretty great, and gives me plenty of hooks.
Eriktd: Ooh, very neat.

That's exactly why I made it happen in an "altered state of consciousness." I don't think we even need to decide if it was an actual divine manifestation, a vision, a person playing a trick, the gods possessing mortals, or something else. It plays the same way from my perspective.
