A dazzling sparkling glitter coats the big man, two of the horses and a previously unseen person who shares the basic outline of the illusory elf on the back of the second horse.
The horses break and run in all directions.
Illthir attempts to call her mount but its exhaustion, fear of fire, blindness, and her own nausea spoil the attempt. It attempts to run blindly like the others but trips and falls along the rocky edge of a stream.
Zokon takes advantage of the situation to shoot Ayles in the chest.
Shepherd Jhod Kavken |
Jhod takes another more considered shot at the brigand but the man dodges the shot.
mwk comp longbow v Ayles (bless): 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 4 + 1 = 17 damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
"Sheat! Pardon my Polyglot." Jhod throws down his bow draws his mace and rushes to Illthir's and Numalar's side.
Bless +1 morale bonus on attack rolls and on saving throws against fear effects.
Salzarus the Black |
The glittering outline of the elf seems fuzzier than the other outlines as if it is overlayed half a dozen times over in mirror images of itself. With his horse gone the figure (figures?) just sits there in the air, the way bricks don't, and then slowly alights to the ground rubbing his (their?) eyes.
"Right. If that's how it has to be."
The wall of scintillating grease disappears.
"Auchs. Kill them all. Start with the one in the big hat."
Auchs the Very Simple |
Fascinated by the "Sparklies" all up and down his still invisible arms Auchs starts and says: "okey dokey, Sal!"
He charges forward, but stops short when he gets to Illthir. "I'm sorry George, but you're in the way!"

Longspear +1 Bless: 1d20 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 + 1 = 3
Numalar strikes at the floating head with his longspear, but loses track of the flying head.
"Blast! Where's it go? Oh, there it is."
Does Jhod get an AoO against it? I'm sure he's a better shot than me.
"Uh, Scarlet? I think this is the real head over here."
RPGGGM |

Possibly, I didn't get a chance to peruse Tiny creatures and 5 foot steps (floats?) earlier. And Ayles should be down 11 hp.
Numalar Auritonius |
Possibly, I didn't get a chance to peruse Tiny creatures and 5 foot steps (floats?) earlier. And Ayles should be down 11 hp.
Considering my roll it doesn't matter, but if that was a 5' "float" I shouldn't have got an AoO either. As far as I know you can make a 5' step while flying. You technically need to make a DC 15 fly check to hover, but perfect maneuverability (+8) and tiny size (+4) makes the check really easy. A DEX of 14 and she succeeds on a natural 1.
Numalar is basically delaying in the hopes that someone takes out the head before he acts.

With a dull sigh, Auchs topples like a felled tree upon Numalar.
Numalar Auritonius |
Numalar will use draconic defense when hit. DR 10/magic - if Auchs has a magic weapon that won't do anything.
But I was delaying until the rest of the party acted. I should have still been able to go before Auchs, shouldn't I? I didn't even get botted.
Illthir Winlowe |
Oww... Illthir summarized her status as she lay on her back, gazing up at the night sky barely visible thought the branches. Her head hurt. Her back hurt. In fact most of everything hurt. She had once heard someone say that pain was good, that's how you knew you were alive, but she was starting to suspect he really had no idea what he was talking about. Or maybe a really devoured worshiper of Zone Kuton?
Anyway. What else were there? She was fairly sure she had seen Walker crash before she went down. And she really had no idea where her lantern were. But it was getting kinda hot somewhere around her feet. Coincidence? On the bright side 'Auchs' seemed to be out. And her stomach actually felt a little better!
So maybe it was time to get back to her feet. Especially if she didn't want to start getting crispy! And then she'd look into making sure that damned mage stuck around - it was him they were chasing so wildly after all!
Illthir Winlowe |
After getting up Illthir points her ominously free hand towards Sally and his new horse. Her sore throat voiced a brief verse and the ground under the pair turned slick and slippery as ice.
Move action to stand. Standard to cast grease on Sally and his horse, leaving the bit closest towards us ungreased.

Well do something man! ;)
Alia of the Blade |
Alia, invisibly, approaches the enemy Elf...there was little else she could do with nausea making her barf almost constantly...Luckily, there was enough else going on to not make the trail very...noticeable.
When the Elf pauses to summon a mount, and mounting up, Alia manages to get close enough, and, with iron will, attempts to fight back the Nausea(I think Scarlet was freed, not sure if I also get to act?) and cast a spell.
I had no time to look it up, but I think summoned creatures are vulnerable to color spray? If so, taking my chances with the horse not having enough HD to avoid stunning if it failes the save - bonus if the Elf fails. Will Save DC 14, cast via Bonded Object.
No representation on map, but I should be able to get all the (enemy) Elfs and the horse.
Numalar Auritonius |
Well do something man! ;)
Okay, then... :)
Retcon:
With the floating head still hanging above him, Numalar steps back, and let's fly with another burning hands, this time aiming upward at the severed head!
Burning Hands reflex DC 16 1/2 damage: 5d4 + 5 ⇒ (4, 3, 1, 1, 2) + 5 = 16
Being 5' further back probably won't protect me from Auchs's attack, though he would provoke an attack from Jhod since he has to move 10 feet.
Does DR/Magic reduce the damage of Auchs' attack? If not, my next action:
Stabilize: 1d20 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (2) + 1 - 4 = -1 ... That puts me at -5.
RPGGGM |
Sorry, I skipped you, Numalar. I sometimes just count different icons between initiative posts.
Stepping only 5 feet away to cast a spell triggers the head's readied action. It 5 foots into range and bites. Numalar is still able to cast but the head evades. Jhod swings but misses*, and the rest of the round goes down as detailed (more or less as listed) above, except that now Numalar is probably at -7 hp. Yes, Auchs' nail-studded table leg came off an enchanted dining room table of the sort that Dr. Ben Carson would have put in his soon-to-be former office. It is in fact a really greatclub.
Bite v Numalar (readied): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19 damage: 1d2 ⇒ 2
Concentration DC 18: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (12) + 9 = 21
head's reflex save (evasion): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21
The screaming skull evades the flame completely.
Jhod v Auchs (AoO): 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 6 + 1 = 8 damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Jhod clips the big man on the side of the head with his mace as the man passes. Unfortunately, Auchs is senseless most of the time so it takes a moment for him to figure out he's been knocked out. And in that moment he swings at Numalar and Zokon, knocking the gnome senseless himself. Fortunately Numalar is much brighter and his brain quickly realizes that it has suffered major head trauma and reasonably decides it is best that he fall over in a heap. And then Auchs realizes the same and collapses down upon him like felled oak.
Alia, invisibly, approaches the enemy Elf...
This is a whole other kettle of fish that I will post about soon.
Alia of the Blade |
no need for kettles of fish, it seemed the most true-to-intent course of action. If I overread or missed something, no biggie - adapt and move on :)
Numalar Auritonius |
Yeah, I kind of expected the Evasion, which is why I was hoping someone else would take out the head first.
Does DR/Magic reduce the damage of Auchs' attack? If not, my next action:
Still waiting on this to see if I am down or not.
RPGGGM |
Auchs' magical table leg makes it through your DR.
Numalar Auritonius |
Auchs' magical table leg makes it through your DR.
In that case I am at -7 HP.
*Originally, before I remembered that the head was prepared to attack if Numalar cast a spell, and could still execute that plan I had dice rolled the following wherein Jhod's AoO hit and dealt 2 points of damage to Auchs (just enough to put him to 0 hp) as he passed on his way to kill Numalar. In this alternate timeline the big man knocks himself out by doing too much while being disabled.
FYI you did roll an extra die in that post. You rolled a concentration check for Numalar when none was required. Numalar triggered the head's readied action by making a 5-foot step. After the step was complete, Numalar was out of the head's reach, which was the whole point of making the 5' step in the first place.
RPGGGM |
Readied actions, like say "bludgeon the heck out of the short fellow should he even start to cast a spell" include the optional extra of taking a 5-foot step. The subsequent teeth-gnashing required a concentration check on Numalar's part, and perhaps a painful series of shots as well.
Illthir Winlowe |
Sorry! Being Prone preluded any sort of move->smack option!
Numalar Auritonius |
Readied actions, ...include the optional extra of taking a 5-foot step. ...
Only if in the turn you readied the action you did not move. The head did move, and cannot take a 5' step as part of the same turn.

This is why I should never work 58 hours, deal with two different instances of pothole induced busted rims, and post all in the same week. Be back a -5 hp.
Salzarus the Black |
1d20 ⇒ 16
Alia, invisibly, approaches the enemy Elf...there was little else she could do with nausea making her barf almost constantly...Luckily, there was enough else going on to not make the trail very...noticeable.
As she approaches:
"Why what a clever little girl." Salzarus says looking directly at the Alia. He smiles. "What a good head you have on your shoulders."
Alia of the Blade |
Looking directly at me as in he sees me, not as in he pinpointed my location by hearing my footsteps, I would assume? And there is 7 of him? As in at least Level 6 if he rolled the max 4 on his amount of images? Just to add some fuel to my pondering there: Would I be close enough to instead move up and stab at him with closed eyes(with the normal miss chance for being blinded) - and would I have to keep eyes closed long enough to have some sort of penalty next round?
Them having seen us during the day, or expecting to be followed is one thing, but they seem awfully well prepared with a ton of buffs before we even came close. It could be we simply wandered into an alarm spell, but their level of preparedness is unnerving. If we are struggling like this against a minion that we hoped to surprise sleeping, then I shudder to think what the Stag Lords Keep will hold for us. Further inmediate action needs pondering - letting him get away will only make things worse...but our options to stop him seem to be...diminishing by the minute.
RPGGGM |
They did have a few minutes to follow you about invisibly. I'm not even going to mention the communal darkvision spell they were all sharing. Closing your eyes doesn't help against mirror image.
These images remain in your space and move with you, mimicking your movements, sounds, and actions exactly.
Alia of the Blade |
Last section of Mirror Image: An attacker must be able to see the figments to be fooled. If you are invisible or the attacker is blind, the spell has no effect (although the normal miss chances still apply).
It's a visual illusion, and just as it does not fool e.g. something using tremorsense instead, technically being blinded would also negate it. The drawback is that you get a fixed miss chance, and a "miss" will not remove an image, but otherwise, technically, it should have worked the same way as with Gaze attacks, where blind-fold-mode gives the enemy total concealment - which should allow the attack to be made: You can’t attack an opponent that has total concealment, though you can attack into a square that you think he occupies. A successful attack into a square occupied by an enemy with total concealment has a 50% miss chance.
Basically not choosing one of the images to stab, but knowing his general location(they are in his space, so I can choose the correct square), closing my eyes, rushing in and using female intuition(and the force) to hope for the best. - but I could also have simply been out of range, so it's your call in more way than one.
That said: I went with Color Spray to streamline - I'm last in Init...how does he(and his horse) handle the Grease from Ilthir? Because I did actually have Grease prepared, too, so I could re-grease as well...
Zokon Santyev |
Seems about time for Zokons next post
Zokon takes a 5ft step towards the bad elf and then fires a pair of arrows at him
Longbow+pbs+bless-Rapid-Deadly aim 1: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (2) + 11 = 13
Longbow damage 1: 1d8 + 9 ⇒ (2) + 9 = 11
Longbow+pbs+bless-Rapid-Deadly aim 2: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (6) + 11 = 17
Longbow damage 2: 1d8 + 9 ⇒ (1) + 9 = 10
"Kamaleaaaaa!"
Alia of the Blade |
Oh, FFS...there don't seem to be any good options. Contesting against mirror images, miss chances and numerous other non-fanciful options,...I'll just go for the original idea.
Caster Level Check: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5 Figures. At least I may still get the horse. *sigh*
RPGGGM |
My phone seems to have drop it's call earlier... Twice....
Summoned creatures are more or less just creatures. In this case a light horse.
As noted, I guess Alia could intentionally 'blind' herself, but that does seem to have a lot of down side even beyond just averting your eyes. That's seems weird considering it says the figments make noise. Anyhow.
will: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 1 = 17
The summoned horse lands a triple Salchow, and finds the scintillating lights slightly annoying. The judge from Galt gives him a 9.6!
RPGGGM |
20% miss chance: 1d100 ⇒ 58
Zokon doesn't have a good shot from his current location to Salzarus. With two stands of trees (and one of them on fire) between him and his target. Little wonder his arrows miss their mark hitting his instead.
