I am trying to give advice to a PC and we are all new to the game. I have seen Silent Image is a great spell to have, we just don't know why. I feel stupid asking but how is it used? What makes it so great?
I already anticipate slapping my palm against my forehead and saying, "duh" as I read your responses.

Hmmm No one responded, so i'll give it a shot. I'm playing an illusionist and I've always done well with them so this comes from experience.
More or less, three reasons it's amazing. versatility. You can do anything with it that'll fit in the AoE, and that you can think of within the bounds of the spell. That level of flexibility really makes it's value varry with the imagination and skill of the player, but it's a good one. Second is the fact that it's first level. YOu get the most number of first level slots, you can make cheap wands out of it, scrolls, metamagic, it's just easy to get and not that taxing on your resources to cast. Lastly, they dont get a save unless they interact with it. Which generally takes a move or standard action, depending on how they interact. The consensus is that it does take an action, like touching it or studying it up close, and then they get a save, unless they do something to prove it's a fake. Thing is, you always know it's an illusion.
example, you are getting pummeled by archers, you're a wizard, so your AC is crap and your HPs are not so good. you dont wanna do a whole lot, you just wanna throw up something to stop the archers from hitting you and your buddies while they fight in melee. so you make an illusionary wall of stone. You can see through it, as you KNOW it's an illusion, so you dont care. They cannot, unless they walk up to it, and touch it, or spend an action studying it. if you're an illusion specialist, you can simply stop concentrating, and it'll stick around fora few more rounds, and then you can move on to something else. even if it's just a want, the CL only affects AoE, and the save DC being crap doesnt matter, b/c they wont get a save unless they waste actions.
Sorry if this counts as thread necro, but I figured someone should answer, and it's about as simple an answer to "why is it good" that i could think of. Hope that helps!
