@ Zokon:

The original blast post.

I don't recall where you were when it went off. But if you were within 10 feet there were two reflex saves to make, one for 17 force damage and the other for 11 fire damage. If you were beyond 10 but within 20 feet only the second (fire) damage applied.

I think you made only one reflex save.

Jhod then channeled energy for 9 points of healing.

Somewhere between the second half of the not-waterskin and the arrival of the nobles Illthir sighs and stands up. She really shouldn't mope. After all, she hardly knew any of the people exploded. But the mood... Oh well. Time to try something helpful again. She gave the hole in the wall an appraising look. She'd need some planks and then she could at least stop (most) of the wind from blowing straight trough. How hard could it be? She just had to swing a hammer around a bit and avoid hitting her fingers.

And so, when the nobles arrived, Illthir was heartily flailing a hammer around and swearing over the evasiveness of nails. They *shouldn't* move that much yet they did. Aaaand another one turned out crooked. Darn. But on the bright side, despite the setbacks, it looked like there wouldn't be a gigantic gaping hole in the wall for much longer. (Tiny gaping holes letting the wind trough was another matter of course...) So she felt that she could earn herself a brief break and give the new arrivals a curious look-over.

Eventually, the party finds their way to a campsite a few miles away. By the looks of it they have a few hours head start on you. The trail they left heads straight for the old fort to the southwest. There were three of them with horses when they left.

Meanwhile, Illthir helps clear away the wreckage and sure-up the upper-story of the bunkhouse with the outpost's supply of lumber.

Scarlet comes out with her big travel pack on ready to go.

Likewise, Makdoon is ready as well.

"Yes, if they don't press on during the night, we'll catch them...hopefully unprepared. They may try hiding their campsite, though, so I would suggest sticking to the trail instead of skipping ahead and hoping to find them again...", Alia considers Zokon's words, also looking to Numalar in case he has a stronger opinion favoring either course of action.

Even if we know where they are going, if we lose the trail we may not find it again, or, if we find a trail, know if it's theirs for sure.

That said, my intent was to see if we CAN find a trail, then fetch the others...not go and try to exact revenge by ourselves - could we adjust for that and everybody who wants came along? At the latest before we lost sight of Oleg, Alia would return and inform them, before rushing back towards Zokon...if not tracking and hustling on horseback, that should not have cost that much time.

Horses? Who brought horses? ;) Someone (i.e. not the ranger) can run back and get horses. And companions if they haven't left by then....

It took three and a third hours to find the abandoned bandit's camp (about 10 miles out, on the crest of a wooded hill, 5/6's a hex away). It is still morning. A person with a speed of 30 could 'hustle' back in half the time (taking 1 nonlethal, and becoming fatigued). If Zokon plans on tracking them he moves a total of 30 feet every round (3 miles an hour) on the plains (worse in the hill country you are headed into). Remember, you can march for 8 hours a day before it becomes 'forced.'

Zokon, while he helped map the way ahead, can not remember all the little twists and turns of the hill country well enough to plot an intercept point (knowledge (geography)).

With that cheery thought she looked around to try and gauge the state of things. Maegar and the Magister seemed to be busy by themselves. And Renault was still around of course. Numalar rides back in, just in time to catch the gist of the conversation.

"What's this? Are we really quibbling about that now? I'm sure Kesten Garess can keep things on an even keel. He's done fine so far."

"In the mean time, Zokon's found tracks. Our culprits are heading away, but we can still catch them. Get your mounts ready (if you have them) and bring Zokon's and Alia's horses too - we're going to need the speed if we are to catch them."

Numalar dismounts, and heads over to Wilbur and Chick as they stand watch.

"A bad business," he whispers, keeping his voice low. "Seems like the Stag Lord now prefers undead soldiers to live ones. They scare the crap put of people, and they don't ask for a salary."

He looks the two over.

"Did you ever hear of the Stag Lord having anyone with him who could do that? Or is it the Stag Lord himself who's quickening the dead, do you think?"

Not looking for a long conversation, just seeing if they know anything. Don't want to let on to the Magister and Tybolt that they would have any reason to know anything. Once I get my answer hopefully those who are saddling up horses are ready.

Wilbur makes a sort of high-pitched keening sound and falls over in faint.

"Wilbur! Wilbur! Get a hold of yourself man! Don't mind him he's just scared. When we were with Kressle's crew in the Narlmarches there was just the one crazy witch--Faeria, but you know her. But there was mention of a new more powerful wizard who had become one of the Stag Lord's favorites. A strange elf who just showed up out of the wilds one day. They say he doesn't get along with anyone and even scared Dovan. There was some sort of power struggle between them and another new big guy that all the bandits seemed to really like. Now what was his name? Um, lemme think.... Akiros! That was it! Anyhow, I guess that this Akiros guy the number two spot, and the elf didn't really seem to care. We never met the guy, Wilbur and me, but all the talk was that he was some serious bad news."

"Sorry Angus. I have to follow my charge. You know the deal. We'll move out tomorrow." Since this is still the day of the attack, Angus wasn't planning to move.

Oh dear. There seemed to be quite a lot happening all of a sudden. But maybe there was a way to try and get everything working together. Worth a shot! Illthir decided and headed over to inject herself in the nobles conversation, since it was loud enough that it felt like she was participating either way.

"A Swordlord peddling wares at the frontier? Oh that wouldn't make any good story - maybe a comedy at best." Illthir started at about the Magister's volume and then quickly continued before any of the nobles got a chance to even twitch their moustache. Or Renault for that matter. "Now! A Swordlord pitting his sharp blade against the Dark Arts - *that's* a song I'd love to sing. It would be the talk of Restov - maybe even the entire north!"

Illthir gave a quick pause, long enough to let them believe whey might actually get a word in but only believe of course. "Oh but where are my manners? Illthir Winlowe at your service! A Skald looking for her next masterpiece." She gave a quick curtsey and smiled hopefully at Langrave and then the Magister. "And I think I found it! And - just imagine dear Magister - if you sanction Swordlord Langrave to personally and immediately deal with the Stag Lord and his ilk all the troubles would surely be over by the end of the week at the latest. And-" her smiled widened into an excited grin. "-I'm sure that fight would be something worthy of a proper Saga!"

The intent here is of course to try and force Langrave to juuust remember he left the oven on back home. Or implore the Magister to sic Langrave at the Stag Lord here and now to his oh-so-sad demise.

Of course there's a chance that he just swallows his honour/ego and fetches an army. But they we can race him - hopefully It'll take him longer to gather the grunts needed.

Or that he simply wanders away and deals with the Stag Lord himself. Well that *would* be awkward ... :P

Anyhow! Felt that something was needed or else we'll have to deal with this buffoon for much longer.

Bluff: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (13) + 14 = 27 Illthir totally isn't dying for the opportunity to make a song about the cowardly swordlord that would rather sell bread to traveller rather then fight bandits. Nope. And there's no chance that that song somehow manages to create itself regardless of Langrave's actions ... :P

Numalar looks at Illthir and then back at Lord Landgrave.

"I'm not sure why our friend Landgrave here wants to be exiled out to the frontier, but if he has some special way of dealing with exploding zombies, maybe he is our man. Necromancy isn't an easy thing to fight, and we can use all the help we can get. It takes a brave man to step up and face an enemy that can steal your soul and turn your body into a horror."

Bluff aid Illthir: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (1) + 15 = 16 ... good thing a 1 is not an auto-failure! :)

"My plan was to simply blast the damn things from a distance with fire. I know it's not subtle, but it gives you the chance to set the bloody things off before they get close. I have no intention of being caught like that again."

Numalar turns to the Magister.

"But to be fair to Kesten, I must say that were it not for his quick thinking the creature would have wandered right into the middle of the compound, and there would be a lot more dead than there are. I for one am thankful for his vigilance."

Numalar steps over to Renault.

"Samuel, if you have a squire handy, best send word to your farm and to your neighbours. The zombie was tied to a horse to make it look like an ordinary rider. Best have people challenge such riders a good way out, eh?"

Then he goes to talk to Kesten.

"I know we won't have the gate back up right away, but maybe see about assembling some kind of barricade out of the debris. It doesn't have to be pretty."

Numalar returns to mount Sir Didymus and watches the preparations of the mounts, and addresses the Magister again.

"Magister, I of course defer to your judgement. So discuss it with the other lords here." Numalar nods towards Renault and Varn-Aldori. "But right now we must be off to pursue the culprits before they escape. If we won't do it, no one will."

Trying to put the notion into the heads of the people here that if a firm hand and leadership are what's needed, those qualities are already here. In me. :) Also suggesting that the Magistrate ought to consult with Varn-Aldori, and Renault, neither of whom seem to like the idea of a Viceroy Landgrave.

In case some roll is necessary, here's a Charisma check: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20

If that were a bluff it would have been a 30. If it were diplomacy it would have been 23.

Before he leaves, Numalar goes over to Jhod.

"Shepherd, I hate to leave the task of taking care of the dead to another, but I am sure you know what to do. We will help when we get back. But in the meantime, did you get the chance to prepare that spell I asked you about? If you haven't yet, don't distress yourself."

Talking about lesser restoration for Scarlet.

Swordlords, properly speaking, are graduates of a particular school of sword-fighting that originated in the region, it is not what you call members of the nobility. Langrave is merely a petty nobleman, a mere few steps ahead of Numalar who grew up in one of the Great Houses. To be sure he is a fine if dastardly duelist, but he is not a Swordlord. Swordlord will often affect the title Aldori (the name of the founder of the school) either replacing their family name with it (to show how dedicated they are to the art) or simply appending it to their name like the title 'esquire'. This is pretty common regional knowledge, so we will gloss over all the probable insults, and no one will have to die in a duel today. ;)

Not that any of them would stoop to dueling with base commoners like the party members (even vassals like Numalar). Even Langrave has his dignity after all. More likely they just have the guards summarily execute you. Ordinarily there is nothing a commoner can do to impinge upon the honor or standing of a noble (that's the whole point really). Even sleeping with them is usually a bad idea. Again, this is pretty obvious to people who live in the region under nobles who would just as soon kill you as look at you. They certainly feed their hunting dogs better. So no harm no foul this time. Silly liberal progressive players. Around here most commoners go their whole lives trying to avoid attracting the attention of their "betters".

Langrave vaguely acknowledges Illthir with a look that says: One more 'Nuncle' or 'Marry sir' from her and he will have the remaining guards hang her by the neck from the wall as an inducement to improve regional morale.

"Yes indeed. A strong hand is what is called for." The magister says smiling and placing his hands upon Langrave shoulders. "You there, scullery woman, the one with the hammer, not the ginger porter, yes you! Can you write? Fetch a pen, some paper and ink and then come back and commit the words I give you to the paper."

The message that ends up leaving with one of the guards says that a man named Anando Veresisi (apparently from the Office of the Magister himself) is to report to the outpost in a week's time to take over general operations.

"Of course. A shepherd tends his flock." he says kindly.

Worth mentioning that if a commoner insults a noble, typically the noble has the legal right to order that commoner punished, often severely, and unless that commoner enjoys the protection of another liege lord or something similar, he is usually entitled mete out this punishment himself. It might hurt the image of a noble to not punish said commoner.

Maybe we should instead look to Galt for our "in time" inspiration :-)

Or more productively the first of the river freedoms and the indicated life-span of stuck up nobles.

But that's just semantics - important piece of info is still if Langrave is/was a Swordlord or not since that was indeed a fairly critical piece of the puzzle.

Said nobles know they are out on the frontier, if they try that punishment stuff they know these independant types are likely to do away with them in their sleep
