FYI, the turn will come out tomorrow.

Maybe it will give enough time for Dreithik to post. :)

Game on!

I have no Idea what Dreithik could pose as, mortician? maybe he could have an outside job, set up a Dead Caller shop outside, keep some sort of perimeter? I'm pretty well at a loss on that.

Action 1

Dreithik hung back a little, realizing from the last adventure they went on that he was not a fighter nor a leader. Play to your strengths and let everyone else to the talking. Don't want to set a potential Payment off.

He watched as everyone greeted, only giving a sleight nod when his turn came.

When the proposal was finished, he had his chance to speak up. "My skills unfortunately don't offer much in household jobs, and I fear I wouldn't impress from physical labour.. is there any other way?" he looked around anxiously. No use again.. maybe some day

Action 2

Shifting awkwardly in his seat, drink loosening his tongue a bit, Dreithik began "I fear I won't be much help unless this man needs an on site mortician.. anyone have an idea?"

Between the two of us, you get a well rounded image of a person's life - keeps the human capital under surveillance and then snips any loose ends if something goes on. There has to be power plays even among the slaves hasn't there?" At that she looked to Balanders for confirmation before continuing, "I'm the observer and consultant, Dreithik's the other half of our service. Between us we offer full-life surveillance of a kind that minimizes disruptions and puts out fires before they begin."

She looked to Dreithik, "How's that? And we're both good with machines to boot. Has to be worth something.

Balanders stares at Dreithik, "You think death is an unwelcome visitor in these households? No, death is as commonplace as breakfast in the house of Tichronus. These nobles tend to keep a morgue on the property, cleaner that way than trusting to the public house. Fewer questions. I am sure they would welcome one such as yourself, more comfortable with a corpse than a room full of gamblers."

Balanders nods his head in agreement. "You speak the truth. Death comes in many forms to the slaves of Tichronus. If you earn the master's favor one day, death might find you when you return to the dormitory and face the scorn of your fellow man. The paid servants as well, always fighting for position, for the honor to serve. Disgusting."

Action 1

Balanders was in a deep sleep, his snores echoed through the small silk padded room. A glass of water near the bedside began slowly vibrating, before long the entire glass was skittering back and forth on the wooden surface. Within minutes, the bed was tossing up and down. Balanders' mass kept him anchored. Balanders' snoring was momentarily interrupted while the movement was at its most severe, but as the tossing subsided, his snores resumed.

Action 2

Balanders looked at Dorial, “Look at me. Would you break into a house with me in it?”

Job Interview: 1d20 ⇒ 8
Dorial looked unpersuaded. Balanders pulled out some of the slave pit postings. ”I have slain beasts, monsters, machines and men. None who stood against me lived. I will keep the house secure.”

Action 3

Balanders accepted the advance, “Who will we report to while you are gone? Do you expect any trouble?”

He scoffed, "No, I do not expect any trouble plus I'm hiring you to keep things calm and safe. I will try and send messages from the front. Here."

He gave them a crystal cylinder. "If this glows a certain color, just twirl it and it will write a message on its surface. That is how I will communicate with you."

Action 1

Asleep on the hard floor, Agia woke nearly as soon as the tremors began. Imagining the footfalls of some great beast, she stood to run, only to remember the walls and heavy roof that surrounded her. She breathed hard as the building shook, imaging a hundreds ways in which she might be pinned amid tumbling bricks and beams. Rushing to the window, she threw it open and sat on the windowsill, ready to brave the fall onto the dark cobbles below at the first sign of collapse.

After what seemed like an eternity the tremors subsided. Agia listened to the night air for the sounds of panicking locals, but the town was quiet. Deciding this must be a regular occurrence, Agia climbed back inside. "Dung for brains land-squatters. How much sense does it take to know ya move on from a place like this? Twice today the bad omens would have driven me out. Instead, ya pitch a town and I get stuck here searchin' it."

She glanced ruefully at the squishy mattress, better appreciating the need for such cushioning, but settled back on the floor. If the ground shook again, she wanted to know.

Action 2

Agia sat overly straight in her chair, smiling a closemouthed smile at everything Dorial said to conceal her missing teeth. When her turn to speak came, she attempted to conceal her shin-talk laden southern speech by adopting an borderline offensive imitation of the Uxphon accent. "Mah special-ilty is as a foremost leech, and ah'd be making sure that yar 'assets' we're well looked aftar."

"Now, I ahm not much for herblore, but I know mah way around every kind of spleent and sleeng. Ah can freeze out sores afore they spread, and can cut the blackflesh when a wound goes sour. Ah know tricks yar wouldn't ba-leeve". For emphasis, Agia brought on a sudden drop in temperature, a touch of chill brushed against Dorial's cheek and the curtains of the room all gently stirred as the pressure equalized itself.

"So nah worries about the health of yar flock. And for any ah can't help, yar'll want him!" she motioned dramatically towards a somewhat offguard Dreithik.

Intellect: 1d20 ⇒ 17

I guess her powers are convincing, despite Agia's apparent 'speech impediment'. ;) Maybe someone's already sick?

Action 3

"How long exactly do yar expect yar'll be gone?

And for the record, I am imagining that the message twirler cylinder works exactly like a hand-spun crystal version of one of those LED spinners.

Agia wrote:

Altha remained sound asleep as the rumbling began but as the shaking peaked and the bed swayed back and forth the building, rolling her across its surface, the Nano groaned as she woke, finding herself splayed awkward on the bed and half-draped out. “What!?” She didn't remember going to sleep like this! The rumbling continued for a few seconds after, dissipating quickly, and she sat up on edge. “What is that?” She looked out her window to peer around, see if anybody else was roused by the odd event.. only to have not a single other soul looking out... except for Agia a few windows down. She looked ready to jump! Altha waved awkwardly, ”You alright? Weird huh?

Disturbed, Altha returned inside and sat on the edge of her mattress for several moments, separating the veil of emotions from her dreams from herself. It was always difficult when she was started awake... she felt so very clouded.

Action 2
She found this man stuffy and condescending but his roughness seemed, at least in part, because he was in a hurry. Altha sighed and waited her turn, trying very hard to somehow remain neutral even though she wanted to curl her lip in disdain. They wanted to get the job, not insult him and his ancestors.

“I'm very good with assessing and managing people, and I'm very good with machines. I can keep tabs on your people without them being away and my intuition is excellent at spotting – and snuffing – fires before they start. Your household would be at peace, at lower risk of trouble among its denizens.” She smiled pleasantly.

In demonstration, I bartered our way to Uxphon, I've negotiated travel, and headed off arguments between strange parties... I'm good with people.” She looked to Dreithik and Agia to confirm her story.

Action 3
”Are you expecting any callers or deliveries during the away period? If not, are we to assume any visitors are unannounced?” She asked, wondering how much of the usual household business would run while the masters were away.

Altha waved awkwardly, ”You alright? Weird huh?"

"Yeah, weird for sure. I'll be okay in a minute. These big ol' buildings with their several floors just make me a bit nervous is all, and the tremors don't help."

Altha wrote:

...I've negotiated travel, and headed off arguments between strange parties... I'm good with people.” She looked to Dreithik and Agia to confirm her story.

"Aye, these was a great misunderstandering between meself and the locals of a particoolar village in which I wrongly interpreted which of the wildlife was fer eating and which was revered as vessels of thar ancestor spirits. Altha managed to smooth the whole thing out, though ah did have to sleep in the woods that night."

Action 1

Still uncertain how he will impress someone with his "skills", Dreithik went into a light, uncomfortable sleep, riddled with words like "Useless" until a loud voice boomed "FINISH" and he bolted up again. Or what he thought was a voice until the whole room started to shake and shift as if on a carousel. Never a dull moment it seems..

He then sat in an armchair for the rest of the night.

Action 2

Dreithik waited his turn to speak, sipping some alcohol he snuk in to give himself courage. Spent my whole life hiding my abilities and now I have to brag and boast them to this filth... alright deep breath and cool it...
"I assume that the estate has gladiators under it's possession? I am under the impression that Gladiator's have a rather high er.. Turnover rate. Well that is where my skills lie. I take care of and dispose of the "deceased" with the added benefit of interrogating and gathering information from them as well. Don't suppose anyone else you have here can loosen a dead man's tongue, eh?"

He let out and sigh and waited the response.

A Honorable Glaive who Defends the Weak

Action 1

After a later night than his fellows and still reveling in the rest that he was still enjoying Kellog barely felt the turn happening, it started as a dream of someone turning on some mining device and then as the trembling happened he wondered if it would stop and by the time it did he was back in dreams.

Action 2

"I, sir, have served as a law keeper and guard in the town of Redstone and am able to lend my skills and my hand to your services while you are gone." Kellog fairly convinced himself that his role would be simply as to guard his party and keep out other intruders as far as participating in larceny he would not take part.

Edit: Wait, is it 100 Shins each? o-o I was reading it as 100 Shins to the group.

I'm thinking with that 100 shins we should buy some supplies and/or upgrades to armor/weapons etc. I imagine purchasing numenera would be extremely expensive but can we sell some too? Kind of customize our gear a bit. I was personally kind of hoping for something to increase Altha's armor but it looks like Nanos don't have any armor mitigation lol

We've got some cash to invest in a couple first aid kits (10 Shins each). Perhaps we should buy the first aid kits and split the rest of the advance 5 ways and buy our own things. And I think a dagger or two (1 Shin each) for Altha would be good. And of course Lockpicks and Matchsticks.

Any thoughts guys? =3

Female Human An Empathic Nano who Talks to Machines

Action1
After the interview was over, Altha suggested they gather around one of the tables and discuss their approach to the job. They'd gotten the offer, thankfully, but she didn't want to walk into the task unprepared. It hadn't gone as well as she'd hoped for herself and it had knocked a bit of the wind from her sails. Normally she could sweet talk most people... she was just glad Agia was there to help out. He'd seemed to take a liking to the nearly hilarious accent she'd adopted – it had taken quite a bit for Altha not to chuckle. Now, though, she was smiling.

“Now that that's over, I think we need to do a bit shopping and planning!” She announced to her fellow, smiling. It always felt good to have a fair sum available... they'd scrimped and bartered a lot during the trip and needed a chance to properly replenish supplies. “I know I'd like to pick up a few things from the shops around here so I think we should split the advance equally and stock up. As far as the estate goes, some clean clothing might be nice... I imagine leaving road drit around the place won't be appreciated.”

Balanders wrote:

“Do you know any good merchants or weaponsmiths nearby? Maybe an apothecary or healer's office too?” She'd done some exploring but the recommendation of a native was worth so much more than an eager, desperate merchant's opinion of his own wares.

They only had a tenuous 'there are secrets beneath the estate' rumor to run on... she bit her lower lip thinking of things they might need – just in case. Altha had spent enough time exploring to know it was better to have the extra things than not. “What do you think is under the estate? Ruins? I wonder if it's something more to do with all these tubes... or maybe that shaking last night.”

She didn't want to look like she was showing up to rob the place either... “What do you think?”

I'll post Action 2 after we've sorted out Action 1 a bit more =3

Agia smiled, "Agreed about the supplies! Now that I'm to be a healer, I'll need the supplies to look the part. I think I'll be able to find everything I need..."

Altha wrote:

"There must be something dark in there. This whole area has some serious bad vibes that reek of worlds past, so when the first folks settled here it must've been for something more schmancy than hot water and tunnels for walkin'. But if the secrets stem from old world sources there's no telling what it may be."

...

When the group arrived at the market Agia steered clear of any of the local healers, knowing that most of them would be peddling pure quackery and wouldn't appreciate someone new operating on their turf to boot. Instead she was able to get most of what she needed by bargaining with a local tailor for some of his extra tools. He was reluctant at first, but Agia was able to convince him that she wasn't trying to open a rival practice by giving him a good look at the sorry state of her own robes. She bargained for scissors, a curved needle, scraps of fabric, and fine thread. She also commissioned a small waterproof bag that she could pick up before the end of the day to hold her findings.

The costliest items had to be made special by a jeweler. Long pins of copper whose shafts were then coated with grey metal by a curious machine the jeweler usually used for putting thin sheens of gold onto baser metals. With needles such as these, Agia knew she could redirect the flow of energy throughout the body to ease pain and accelerate healing.

She packed away a few other odds and ends, and finished it off by spending her remaining budget on a small bottle of strong liquor. Few people knew that, much like the patients themselves, wounds calmed more quickly if given a stiff drink.

Took about 10 of the shins and assembled a First Aid Kit.

Now, Agia hesitated, thinking that maybe she could get away with spending the rest of her share on some curiosities or some cream for a treat, but Altha had been right, and her clothes weren't up to the job ahead. She wasn't about to replace her thick wool travel clothes with the the cream colour plant weavings the locals were passing off as cloth, but at the very least they needed properly cleaned and mended.

Took a few more shins (say... 2?) to pay for getting her clothing fixed up. They still look wild and foreign, but they should at least be presentable, and likely have more secure seams than the day they were made to boot.

I'll get onto Action 2 tomorrow, and possibly extend Action 1. Since the shopping trip is likely to drag out I'm sure we'll want to run part of introductions at the manor in parallel, since our long term supplies aren't likely to affect that.

An Resilient Nano who Wears a Sheen of Ice.

Action 2

Feeling deeply uncomfortable, Agia struggled to address the servants. "Uh, well, How do ya do? I mean, rather, you are who? I mean... I... I'm Agia." she managed to squeak. "You could introduce yourselves... if you want to, I mean. I'd like to know your names, is all. But you don't have to!"

She turned to her companions. "I'm making a hash of this. Little help?"

...

With introductions out of the way, Agia began to explore the manor. She didn't touch much, as there would be plenty of time for a deeper search later, but there was always a chance that something obvious would be in plain sight.

Doing a cursory initial search to get the layout of the house and turn up anything of obvious interest.

Balanders thought for a minute, “I know where the slaves go to get the things they need. Shops in makeshift houses, abandoned tunnels reclaimed by freed and escaped slaves. Places where the slaves can take care of their own. I know there are some healers and goodwives there who we could go to for help. They will welcome us there, and perhaps we might find one or two that could tell us about this address. As for merchants and smiths, I haven’t had much need for either until recently. Ricci took care of all that for me.”

Balanders offered to lead Altha & the group to the Slave Section for supplies & information. Tag Anyone

The slave section didn’t take The Shifting well, some shacks had been demolished, many of the healers were tending to wounds and scrapes. Sobs and cries carried through the air as families surveyed the destruction.

As Balanders entered the ward, he caused quite the stir. He had forgotten that he was dressed up like the guard of a noble. His companions were not dressed in the Uxphon manner, and as such aroused more curiosity than fear. The majority of the slaves were from scattered lands, far from these mountain tubes. They longed to hear news of their homelands.

Balanders quickly took to helping families struggling to move the salvage.Activate Muscles of Iron His strength made clearing the wreckage an easy task. After some time spent moving the larger pieces around for the families in this section of the ward, a desperate looking woman entered the section, begging for help. She claimed that her daughter was trapped by a displaced beam.

Balanders followed the woman to a deeper ward, as they proceeded down the pipe, the air became damp and warm. Balanders wondered how any could make a life in such a climate. The woman’s shanty had been assembled, like most, from the trash and leftovers of the Noble’s construction projects. At some point she had found an abandoned beam of synth-wood that was as sturdy and heavy as steel. She had wedged it into the pipe at an angle, and attached tarps to it that hung from either side. Her daughter's body lay beneath the beam, the shifting had dislodged it. Balanders prepared himself to carefully lift the heavy beam Strength Check with Effort - GM? I don't do micromanaging in my games so I won't track rations or water or shins UNLESS it leads to roleplaying opportunities.

So if you're stuck in a desert environment for days at a time then water may be an issue. If you're traveling through the Cold Desert then keeping warm and finding game to hunt may be an issue.

We are here to secure this manor, not to trouble you. You have no need to fear us.” The slaves were clearly uncomfortable when Balanders went to greet them. Altha was grateful when Balanders offered to take them to where they might allies, agreeing that notifying Ricci and doing some more information gathering would be a good idea.

Positive Social Interaction (Bartering, Trained): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10

Before they arrived at the Slave Section, she took the opportunity to join Agia at the market. There she bartered with a few different merchants to manage a minor deal on the supplies she wanted – two daggers, some matches, and lockpicks... and after contemplating a much recommended rope, a 50ft length of that as well for 10 Shins. Her largest purchase of the day was a Glowglobe. It reminded her of the firefly she kept in the bottle but it was far more reliable that tormenting the poor time-locked creature for a bit of light. Finally, she purchased a new set of clothing in dark colours to replace her travel-worn ones. Her shoes were still in good condition and did not need a replacement, thankfully.

Purchase list/tally: 2 Daggers (2 Shin), Matches ([10 sticks] 1 shin, Lockpicks (5 Shins), Rope ([50ft] 2 Shins), Minor Glowglobe (5 Shin), Clothing (2 Shin), => 17 Shin; leaving 7 Shin.

I'd also like to pick up a Book on Uxphon, but the corebook gives a range from 5-20 Shins and I'm not sure how much a general information guide/book would be. Sort of like a 'flora/fauna of x region' style guide irl.

When they arrived at the Slave Section, Altha grew more withdrawn – there was an aura of pain about the place that gave her a mild headache and it wasn't hard to see why. The Shifting had toppled buildings and many were nursing injuries. It reminded her of her home. Immediately she set about helping Balanders sort things out and comforting the injured.

Empathy (Trained): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19
Positive Social Interaction (Comforting, Trained): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9

The strength of emotions running through the place made it exceptionally easy to connect but it quickly grew overwhelming and while she managed to take the edge off for some people, she had to withdraw less the emotional turmoil drown her out.

Thankfully, Balanders was heading off in a more isolated direction and Altha followed after, looking as if she were suffering a headache. He hauled some rubble off of a woman's daughter and Altha hesitated, rubbing her temples before she attempted to see what could be done. She wasn't much of a healer but maybe she could do something. "Agia! We need your help!" She called out as she checked for broken bones and found the girl's pelvis still in tact. Spinal injuries seemed limited as well, so she turned the girl to a recovery position on her side so she could breathe better, sensing much of the discomfort came from that.

Altha's quick work had mostly stabilized the girl by the time Agia arrived on the scene, but the more experience young woman gave her a thorough once over anyways. Altha continued to chat to the girl while Agia did her work, discovering that her name was Rala. Agia occasionally butted in to scold the girl for cringing away from her cold hands. "None of that now, I'm cold but death's colder, eh? Looks like you don't need to worry about either of us yet. There's plenty of bruises and likely some bleeding in your insides, and while there's not much we can do about that it doesn't seem like it's about to get any worse. Some other slaves arrived with a stretcher, led by the girls mother. Agia was happy to entrust Rala to them with a few instructions for how she was to be cared for.

Standing with her hands on her hips and looking satisfied, Agia smiled and turned to Altha. "Ya know, I think I might actually pull this healer shtick off!"

Please try to post daily if possible or let me know otherwise if not.

If this game has become a chore or requires too much effort, please let me know. I have been in that situation myself plenty of times and understand that real life always comes first.

@Altha and Balanders: I have a question for both of you. In your respective posts of 669 and 674, you both quote (Balanders and Group) but there is nothing in those quotes.

Is this your way of 'tagging' people? Meaning, are you expecting Balanders and 'the group' to provide input at that point in the dialogue?

Thanks for the clarifications.

Female Human An Empathic Nano who Talks to Machines

Action 1 – At Tichronus' Estate

Altha took time to explore the house once they were settled, quickly finding the Tower Study. The sheer volume of books astounded her and she wandered the shelving, selecting tomes here and there when they caught her interest. It seemed that Tichronus had a penchant for hunting and tactical combat... that certainly explained the trophy room (she refused to call it a dining room).

Fascinated by the wealth of information in the study, Altha spent a fair amount of time investigating, eventually poking through the volumes on Tichronus' desk with interest. After looking through the memoirs, she moved on to the desk they were sitting on, fiddling with the drawers and rifling through to see if anything of interest stood out. A man like Tichronus probably had hidden drawers too – she couldn't reach the second floor yet so she'd decided to pour over the study.

Does she find anything of interest in the memoirs/journals? Anything interesting in the drawers? Or any oddball features to toggle with?

Tough Glaive who Performs Feats of Strength

Action 1
Balanders toured the estate alongside Altha. When he saw that she was engrossed with the books in the study, Balanders decided to look around outside.

Balanders was happy to be outside. It was a rare treat for him now, to be in a space where he did not have to duck and cower to avoid banging his head against this or that. It was a godsend to be able to stretch out and breathe fresh air.

After taking a few minutes to appreciate the freedom of the outdoors, Balanders walked out to the stables and saw the young boy from earlier tending for the thurdens. Balanders watched from a distance for a while, seeing that the boy seemed to enjoy and care deeply for the animals. The boy spoke to the beasts as he worked, and seemed to take extra effort making sure that the animals were comfortable. The boy first saw Balanders as he was allowing the animals to snack from out his hand, the boy jumped with a start and dropped the feed to the floor of the stable.

Balanders slowly approached the stables while the boy stood at attention, his eyes worriedly darting left to right. Balanders spoke to the boy “These thurdens look well cared for. What are their names, boy? And what is your name?”

The boy seemed apprehensive, unconvinced of Balanders' good will. He stayed quiet as Balanders approached, keeping his eyes to the floor. Balanders looked around the stables, seeing that the riding equipment appeared well-used and the thurdens’ iron shoes were well-worn. Balanders looked at the riding equipment, the stirrups and saddles.

I was thinking that I might see a boy-sized saddle and ask the boy where he liked to range, I think a roll of 6 is too low to notice this though. How much can we speak for these NPC’s - or name them? GM, do you want us to be creatively engaging like I am now, or doing more passive engagement - question asking so that you can fill in details?

Balanders stepped out of the Stables and scanned the horizon. He turned back to see the boy still standing awkwardly at attention. Balanders asked the boy, ”Where do the masters go to hunt?” How far away do they range, is there game nearby or do they go out for days at a time? What beasts do they hunt?”
Positive Social Interaction: 1d20 ⇒ 19
On the map, I see the cliff SE, what does balanders see if he looks to the West?

Balanders walked over to the storage room, looking around for anything of use. He saw that the room contained many general supplies that would be useful for any ongoing household maintenance. He spent some extra time digging around to see if they were prepared for any unusual maintenance tasks, to see if there were any unusual tools, or any objects he hadn’t seen before.
Search Storage for anything unusual: 1d20 ⇒ 17

Balanders left the storage room as the sun was descending, he decided to find out about dinner. He wondered: Would his companions be eating together or seperately? Was somebody going to be preparing food for them? He walked towards the dining room, hoping to share what he had found with the others and to see if the others had found anything of interest.

An Resilient Nano who Wears a Sheen of Ice.

I added 8 shins and the first aid kit to my sheet, subtracting the 12 Agia spent. I'll just pay the full cost of the first aid kit for now, since I'm not sure what else to buy until we figure out what's up.

Agia stared over the cliff at the edge of the property. She could practically feel the threads of destiny coming together, but the way forward was cloudy. Staying in one spot waiting for fate to strike was wearing on her, so she had come to make a chant of guidance. "Wind and Sky, I call ya. For me and mine: bright skies, good eyes, and a path to travel 'til the 'morrow".

Her voice echoed over the surrounding black mountains out into the dark valleys and hidden hills, and Agia suspected they'd have found the path forward before long. Crossing back to the house she saw Balanders out investigating and thought about following him, but decided to go back inside. She was sure he was to be a key figure, but it wouldn't do to seem obsessed while they were getting to know one another.

On her way past the study Agia waved at Altha, who barely glanced up from pile of books she had managed to accumulate. Agia had taken a quick peek at files on the desk the night before but had struggled with the baron's propensity for sesquipedalian prose.

Moving into the dining hall, Agia leaned back in one of luxurious dining chairs and propped her booted feet up on the table to think. As she reflected she stared at the various animal heads and wondered where they all came from.

A search of the dining room, though a pretty casual one since Agia has a penalty for figuring out puzzles now so if she finds anything it's either entirely by accident or because it wasn't very cleverly hidden in the first place. On the lookout for hidden switches or compartments, but if there's nothing to see will just contemplate the animals themselves.

intellect: 1d20 - 3 ⇒ (1) - 3 = -2

Intrusion time. Maybe Agia leans back too far, falls over and breaks something valuable, or something equally slapstick happens just as Balanders walks into the room? Of course, if there is some sinister agenda here something worse could happen.

Welcome back!

Female Human An Empathic Nano who Talks to Machines

After spending most of the day in the study, Altha wandered out around dinner time to take a stroll around the exterior of the building, passing her inspection off as a sort of patrol. The area between the storage and the building proved mostly uninteresting... but the view from the cliff face was beautiful and she lingered there for a moment, taking in the cool evening air and breathing. Their trip had been a long one, it felt to good to finally be making headway.

Search grounds: 1d20 ⇒ 16

When she finished making the rounds outside, Altha returned to the estate proper and poked her head into the dining room, trying to see if they were expected to cook their own dinner or how it worked with the servants. She spotted Balanders on her way to the dining room and waved, smiling broadly, ”Do you know how dinner's supposed to work here?” Altha paused at the doorway, eager to discuss her findings.

I feel like knowing the outcome of Action 1 stuff will be important for deciding what to do for Action 2 so I'd like to wait for the evening stuff before moving on if that's not asking too much. :3

On NPCs:
Feel free to describe and interact with NPCs either passively (i.e., you take over the NPC) or actively, (you tag me and I act for the NPC).

I'll let you know if you step on my toes and remember that this is your game world as much as mine.

ON ACTIONS 1 AND ACTIONS 2
The tricky part of being a good GM in these games is giving enough situations for everyone to act upon, which usually means providing a couple of breaks for actions from the PCs. Hopefully all PCs will have something to do/say in all breaks but it's OK if they don't.

So the trick is to provide different situations but making them 'independent', meaning whatever happens in Actions 1 does not invalidate whatever is going on in Actions 2. Not that easy sometimes. :)

However, since the turn recaps are the only venue to know what really happened, we can adjust. I'm also Ok if the roleplaying in Actions 1 makes us delay Actions 2. As long as I get a decent post from everyone every day, I don't necessarily have to recap or even move the game forward. It's all about keeping you engaged and everyone entertained.

With that being said, I'll provide information on results of the search in Actions 1 tomorrow when I intend to recap.

Sure thing.

That happens to everyone every once in a while. Please try to send a 'very quick PM' (or post to the discussion thread) letting me know of your troubles (no need to explain) and when you expect to be back.

Something like 'Busy, will post on Sunday' is plenty. This is just so I know what's going on and I don't hold up the game needlessly waiting for your post.

Tough Glaive who Performs Feats of Strength

Action 2 -

Balanders got up early in the morning, before dawn. He felt like it had been an eternity since he had been on a hunt. Armed with the information the boy had given him the previous day, Balanders set out to survey for game. Whether he caught anything or not mattered little to him as he set forth, he wanted to survey the region, observe the wildlife, and experience the wonder of the sunrise from outside. In the nature, he felt free.

Balanders carried his maul on his back, and a javelin in hand as he hiked through the brushy, mountainous terrain. The pre-dawn light snaked through the mountains from the East, and Balanders made his way through the dimly lit trails hoping to chance on something alive. He longed to see animals living amongst nature, a bit of respite from the rigid cruelty of Uxphon.

As the sunlight thickened in the air, Balanders knew it was time to return to the Manor. No more game would be had that morning. (If applicable)Balanders took what he had gathered to the kitchen, he hoped the chef would welcome some variety of fare. He offered his assistance cleaning the game, and after seeing that all was taken care of, he returned to his room to clean up before his companions came down to break their nightly fasts.

Alright, so that last thing that happened with Dreithik was that the guy hiring us essentially turned down his offer of skills, but still told him to go. So he didn't appoint me a specific job?

Whatever method you use for tracking is fine. You can have 100% resale value.

I DO need to know what you have bought in case you want to use it. For example, I won't let you pull out some rope if it was never listed in your character sheet.

Insert into Action 1

After Balanders looked through the storage shed, he emerged with a bag full of heavy tools. The bag included a crowbar, a chisel and large tongs, a 10ft. length of metal wire, and six spikes. He also took Two Javelins from a rack of hunting weapons in the house. He walked with the bag and the weapons inside and found the old man, paying him for the value of the goods to ensure the household inventory stayed in balance.

Agia wrote:

Altha had only seen the final portion of Agia's fall and couldn't help the laugh, unsure whether to help the other woman or remain out of sight and keep her dignity in tact. Then, deciding to offer assistance was better than not, Altha stepped out from the doorway and helped shift the chair off of the Nano, trying hard to keep a straight face, “You alright? I heard a noise... a crash. What were you looking at?” Altha glanced up at the wall curiously, wondering what had caught Agia's attention.

Action 2

When dinner was served, Altha was surprised to find a proper noble's feast spread out before them – several courses, a few different kinds of meat, free-flowing wines and spirits... and fruit. Fresh, sweet fruit. Eagerly, the Nano took a few of the fruit from a neatly organized pile then served herself a few fillets of meat. “I didn't find anything interesting... But the study's full of books on hunting and tactics.” She gestured at the trophies around them, sounding mildly disappointed, “What about you guys?”

I'll hold off on Action 3 and post later tonight or tomorrow :3

Action 1

Altha wrote:
“You alright? I heard a noise... a crash. What were you looking at?”

Agia hesitated, The hot blood rushing to her face from embarrassment combined with her usual blue pallor to make a deep violet. She desperately wanted to take a closer look at the mounted animal to see if it really had bellowed, but she had a creeping suspicion that someone may have been playing a joke on her and she didn't want Altha to think she was stupid. Agia already dragged the party half way across the world on what was looking like a wild bursk chase, after all. "Nuh... Nothing. I'm fine." she finally managed to stammer out, convincing no one.

Dropping the charade, she picked the up the chair and flopped into it, grimacing as she bumped what was likely to be a sizeable bruise on her abdomen. "I mean to say, I was looking at some of the fuzzers on the wall and I heard a noise and got jumpy. Might've been a trick of the numenera, but was prolly just someone having a laugh."

Action 2

As the soup dishes were whisked away by the staff, Agia was a bit put out. "I'm always all for a job with that comes with meals included, but this baron is touch stingy, no? A bowl of broth for evening sup erry day and we'll be mighty thin afore long."

Her look of resignation turned to confusion as the serving staff brought out fresh dishes, and then finally comprehension dawned as the various dishes of meat and fruit that formed the main courses were set out. Agia saluted the staff, "Ya silly billys have been holding out on a us! Clever-clever, holding back the good stuff 'til we were hungry enough to appreciate it. I can't say why ya took my bowl if we were gonna keep going, though, thing was perfectly fine yet and it could have saved ya a dish."

"Also, I think I'll be needing another spoon. Ya'll took both of mine with my bowl, and upon further reflection I'm thinking I was only supposed to eat soup with the one. I was just using both because I figured if ya'll spent the time setting 'em out I ought to make use of 'em."

...

"This place sure is plenty schmancy,"Agia said while tucking in, "I'm none too impressed, though. My ol' clan had a saying: 'All's fine for fair weather, but when the storm comes ya only own what ya can carry'. And tha storm always comes afore long."
Thinking hard while she chewed, she turned to Balanders, who had barely managed to fit himself into one of the dining chairs, "I guess that'd make ya the richest man in the world, when push came to shove, eh? Ya'll could haul half this house, no question."

"I wish we'd had your likes on the trail, truth be told. It was often that we had to pack up in a hurry and leg it. Usually 'cause of Margr, but sometimes it was mutie huggers down from Nihli' to grab slaves to sell off to the Pytharonese. Any of 'em you can drive off once, but the only way to keep 'em from coming back with more than ya can handle is to keep moving on. Wasn't long afore we was mostly walking along the course of the Wall, in the Shadow of the Lady."

"Winter never really ends in those parts, but an umlan can eat tha squishies and slimeys that grow on the rocks like mold on a loaf, if ya let 'em range widely enough. Ya can almost eke a living that way. Almost. Near the end there I think I was one of tha only things keeping it all together. I don't quite freeze, ya know, so when a storm hit sudden erry' one else could huddle 'round the flame and I could still gather up the herd and lead 'em to shelter. When it gets that cold, even I feel it. Once, I went so far gone that I couldn't move no more, just sat there toppled over, frozen like a stone. Couldn't move, couldn't even breath, but couldn't die neither, in the end. When they dug me out the next day I think they figured they'd be thawing me for tha birds' sake, but in the end I woke up. Wasn't pleasant, mind ya." She shivered at the memory.

"There's days that I think they've likely all died now that I'm gone, but that's just my pride talking. Fact is, the herd was dwindling anyways and the whole lot was doomed afore long even if I stayed. We could've limped along for a while yet, maybe joined up with another clan for as long as they'd have us, but things was rough all over. Tha elder's were waiting on a miracle, probably from yours truly, but I didn't have a miracle to give. Making things colder doesn't amount for much in a place like that."

Turning to her older companions "Ya know, when we first met I was worried someone from my old clan might be chasing me down. Now, I think I was hoping for it. They'd never get me, I'd see to that, but at least it would mean someone else made it out alive and was limping around the wider world."

As the servants brought small glass bowls of fruit gelatin for dessert, Agia's expression did a complete reversal, all dark thoughts of her past banished by the promise of treats. "You're joshing me! There's more tasties yet? It never ends!"

...

In the end, the food was well cooked but somewhat plain. While the pantry was stocked for well-bred palettes and needed to be used, it seems the staff had determined that guests of this caliber would not require the use of the good spices. Even so, it was heaven compared to travel food, and even outmatched the indifferently served meal from the inn the night before.

Agia belched loudly and realized that she could get used to all this, which was an excellent reason to avoid doing so. She resolved to work harder at the task at hand tomorrow. But she no longer minded so much if destiny took its sweet time tracking them down.

Unfortunately it seems that my work issue is not going to get resolved for a few weeks, resulting in me having to work double shifts every day. I'm already pretty far behind, and I really hate to do this to you Fabian and everyone else, but I am going to have to pull out of the game for the time being. It shouldn't hurt the story much as I haven't actually done anything the last couple turns.

Sorry :(

The land of Seshar is a dry desert crisscrossed with artificial waterways created in days long past. The village of Redstone lies upon one of these waterways, flourishing due to its brisk trade in stone quarried nearby and its extremely capable clave of three Aeon Priests.

But something went wrong.

You were hired by Deymish to accompany him to deliver medicines ordered by the Aeon Priests. You are traveling on his boat, an 18-foot (5.5 m) wooden trow with a synth sail that—even fully loaded—glides along the waterways seemingly effortlessly.

Greeting fellow roleplayers,

I am looking for four to five player character to star in a PBP (Play By Post) to be played with Numenera Rules in the Ninth World. The PBP will be run a little bit differently than most. Please see this page (game in progress) for game format; the turn recaps in the gameplay thread show what my intention is with regards to gameplay, use of maps, how combat is handled, etc. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

Full disclosure: I have never played nor run Numenera so I will make mistakes as we play along. But it is my full intent to tell a great story and have lots of fun as well. Also, I am hoping to turn this game into some sort of long-term campaign, but I am not sure how to yet since all Numenera has are some ‘disjointed’ adventures. I will evaluate how things have gone after this first adventure, which I fully intend to complete, and see where we go from there.

The pace will be about a minimum of four to five turn recaps per week, and I will do all the ‘passive’ dice rolling (in the interest of speed, I’ll roll things like defense actions, initiatives, etc.). I am looking for "roleplayers" whose posts are NOT a one sentence reply. All players are expected to post at least once EVERY day (more is better) so if you can't meet that schedule, please do not bother applying to the game. Numenera really lends itself well for good, descriptive, storytelling so that’s what I am going for.

If this sounds like a game for you, then post a character with the following sections: a) appearance, b) background, c) personality, d) portrait or picture, and e) crunch. Please make the characters interesting, the strong and silent types just don't cut it in this type of game. I don’t think there will be much competition for character spots given the rules, world, and my particular style of PBP. However, I want well developed PCs with regards to appearance, background (we’ll work on PC connections once players are selected), and personality. Crunch should be drawn only from official Numenera products (I don’t have The Strange or the Cypher System books). I will roll for your cyphers, oddities, etc. You may use the character here to format your fluff (not yet developed in sample) and crunch.

I want to start soon so I'll accept applications until Saturday March 12, 2016 6:00 pm EST and select a PC shortly thereafter (same night). We will start the next day.

I’m sure I missed something here so please ask me questions.

HOUSE RULES:

PBPs are a different breed of animal than face-to-face gaming so some adjustments need to be made to keep the game moving and fun for everyone (including the GM :)). Below are some house rules that I will implement with the above in mind specifically for Numenera games.

DEFENSE and INITIATIVE ROLLS: I will make all these rolls. If you want me to include effort on these rolls, I will have to know ahead of time. I will automatically use effort for those PCs that have it for free (i.e., those that have the pertinent edge).

ACTIONS: If effort will be used for an action, you let me know and I will roll for you. It’s too tempting to cheat in this system where you can see the rolls ahead of time and decide whether adding effort would be worth it or not. In any case, the turn recap style of this PBP lends itself for the GM to roll all the dice (i.e., you can just describe your action and intended result, which I will use in the turn recap if the action succeeds). If you don’t apply effort, you may just roll yourself and describe the results since I will tell you ahead of time the level of the task/opponent/etc.

EXPERIENCE POINTS: I will not be handing out XPs for intrusions. I will use my free intrusions (if you roll a 1 on a d20). If I use any intrusions at other times, it will be to promote roleplaying and not kill off a PC (I’m not into that :)). Therefore, you will not have XPs to give to me for special benefits (immediate, short, log, etc). We will level up when it makes sense for the PCs to do so story-wise; we will probably ‘level up’ twice per tier (i.e., from tier 1 to tier 1.5 to tier 2) in order to distribute the four benefits obtained by going up a tier.

OTHERS: I don’t know yet. There may be other house rules implemented or the above rules changed. We’ll have to see how it goes but any and all rules will be with the intent of crafting a better story for everyone.

Hey Fabian!

I am very interested in a Numenera game and have been looking for a PbP game for some time. So, I would like to apply, with my Antar Es, the Graceful Glaive who Fuses Flesh and Steel (http://tinyurl.com/jrrsu9yt ,very rough draft still)

More polish to come!

I would be interested as well, I have ran more than a hand full of Numenera games myself and look forward to the opportunity to play a game myself.

I'll have to dig out my character sheet, but off memory I believe he was a Doomed Glaive that Howls at the Moon. I have altered the rules to the focus a bit in order for it to be actually playable without having to keep track of in game moon cycles. I can give more in depth description when I break the sheet out.

I am interested in joining in; I have experience in running Numenera (it is currently our Games group RPG)

I have a character called Sica Sendrillar, a Driven Jack who Fuses Mind and Machine

I also have PBEM experience as I ran a Corporation RPG game for about 18 months

Great, the more people that have played Numenera the better. PBEM experience helps as well; you'll see that PBP is similar in some way to PBEM (especially the way I play them with turn recaps).

Abilities:

Beast Form- +8 Might +2 Speed +1 Might Edge +1 Speed Edge
Cannot spend Int unless it is to change back at a Dif 2.
Change happens if might pool gets to 4(?) or lower (edited from the original ruling of moon cycles and what not, open to tweak it still if needed). While in beast form, the character is supposed to attack everything in sight with limited self control, which includes party members. After changing back, all rolls get -1 for the next hour if a mighty creature was felled, if not it is -2 for the next 2 days.

Controlled Change- Able to change on command at a Dif 3.

Successive Attacks- If I kill something, I am able to make a second attack on the same turn if another target is in reach.

Inabilities:

Other PC's cannot do anything to make my rolls easier, no effort or any helpful actions have any effect.

Inability of social interactions (explained in backstory).

Is currently pursued by bounty hunters (" ")

Armor:

Weapons:

Backstory (oh boy):

TL;DR: Big Tough guy accidentally signed pact with an Eldritch race due to promise of bigger muscles. Proceeded to Destroy and entire town on his own and is now wanted.

Rygarth was a mighty hunter for his tribe in the Caecilian Jungle. Large in stature, he was well regarded by the tribesmen, yet he yearned for more. One night he was approached by an elderly merchant by the name of Terrowin who seemed far away from where he should be. Terrowin said that on all of his travels across this land he has never seen a mightier man than the one that stood before him, but why should he stop there? Why be the strongest man if there are still beasts that could yet fell you? I know of a way that you can gain the strength of the beasts that you hunt. Rygarth accepted the unknown offer before him and was handed a small dusty, moth eaten book that reeked of the ancient times past. "In here you will find the strength you search for" were the last words heard before the merchant Terrowin disappeared into the night.

Inside this book were instructions of how to perform a blood sacrifice ritual, which Rygarth hastily followed. He was awoken by the sound of chanting and was surprised to find that he was completely bound in the Tribe Elders tent. As he groggily tried to remember the last few hours, the Elder was leaning over him, chanting and painting an odd mark on his chest. " I know not of where you found this evil magic, but you will not use it here. I have sealed what you have brought to this world inside of you. Now you must leave. You are hereby banished for what you have done"

Not knowing what has transpired in the last night, Rygarth had no choice but to obey. Nobody saw him off and he started walking to the land in the East, with a very light voice in the back of his mind whispering "Let me out, we are one and the same..."

Fast forward a few months of roughing it, the voice has grown louder and more dominant in Rygarth's mind. The mark on his chest burned constantly now. One night he found himself in a small fishing village of Pike's Head where he had been unloading fish form ships for a shin a day. Spending his wage in the local tavern, over all the laughing and yelling, all he heard was the voice. "You keep me captive for too long, Your magic has faded. I need to feed" The building went quiet as those words escaped Rygarth's mouth in a deep demonic tone.

He woke once more with no memeory, laying the the burned shambles of what used to be Pike's Head, the whole population slaughtered before him.

Notes:

The howls at the moon focus is described more like you switching placed with the beast rather than you turning into one, so I dug out my Cthulhu books and found a lesser race of hyper aggressive, savage ape like beings Called the Voormis. They look Like a mixture of Big Foot and a Predator. Like this.
When the switch happens, Rygarth muscles bulge a ton and his skin tone turns a grey or dark blue. Dark bristles of hair sprout and he grows razor sharp claws and fangs.

It's about 3am here so I'm going to call that that, let me know if I left out anything important.

Hey Brass Jester,

Thanks for the PC submitted. I'll take a look at the crunch later but I did not find any red flags on a casual read.

However, I would like a little more information on the PC's fluffy parts. Remember that in Numenera these PCs are unusual people who have some history/deeds to their names.

You can leave out the 'recent' history sort of vague and that is my fault for having the game starting aboard a boat and not in a particular city. However, I would like to know more about the PC.

Take a look at this sample to give you an idea of the sort of thing I'm looking for. Ignore the crunch and scroll down to the 'Appearance, Background, and Personality' part.

Excellent description and backstory. Flesh out his personality a little bit. What drives this guy? What does he fear? How does he relate to others? Any quirks and/or mannerism?

I like him too but we need to adjust some.

I want PC to be Tier 1, which is already above the rest in Numenera.

If 'howls at the moon' doesn't work, would a reskinned 'rages' work? I need to take a closer look and won't have time until a later today.

Good backstory. How about some description when he's not 'changed'? What about his personality? Look at my comments to Proud Grognard above?

In addition, does he regret his pact?

All good questions, Fabian. This is why I said the sheet is a draft!

Also, may I ask how you plan to play the 'repair' part of the Fuses Flesh and Steel aspect? I ask because he is a glaive and he is going to get hurt a lot. Most GMs I have asked range from "After one day of rest, you have repaired yourself" to ''it is like healing, but no recovery used" "it is a damagex3 check but you are trained and have an enabler with the toolkit and it takes the same amount of time".

How will you run it?

I saw that my previous post was a bit incoherent, mainly because my two year old daughter was also trying to write at teh keyboard.

What I meant to say, is that most go for 'It is like First aid, only with tools', as shown here.

https://www.reddit.com/r/numenera/comments/3w9r09/fuses_flesh_with_steel_re pairshealing/

Your call, of course.

Normal healing except the last 5 points. Those points are 'repaired' as the healing skill (repair 5 points is target 15) but repair tools are asset and the the repair skill can be trained or specialized. Repairing also takes some time (about 1 hour).

And that 'repair' skill can also be used to repair other stuff, not just the PC.

Does that sound fair?

You are the GM, whatever you say goes! So for dmg 5 Antar Es would have to roll a 12 (since he has a toolkit). Sure, why not?

Could he try and repair partial damage to lower the difficulty? Say only 3 out of 5, with a TN of 9? And then try the next two next time?

And it goes without saying that 'Repair' will be one of the first skills he is going to train. After all, his 2nd tier focus ability is about interfacing with machines, so it will come in handy.

Yes, you could try to heal less points with the associated lower TN and then repair the remainder later. Remember that it takes one hour per skill check each time.

The reason why he starts at tier 2 rather than 1 is because you are able to take "handicaps" of sorts in order to start with XP, and I figured that being able to control the change was important enough of a skill to take those handicaps. He doesn't start with any weapons or equipment or cyphers/oddities, cannot be helped by others, and with the bounty part, he is constantly perused at every turn. But yes, I am fully willing to change things if you do not agree with them.

As for your questions,

When he is in control he is 6' and appears very gaunt, as if he hasn't slept in days and it looks as if his skin slightly hangs off of his body, as if it has been stretched recently. He has sort of wild-messy brown hair to his shoulders and a faded Elder Sign. His personality is opposite of the Voormis where he is passive of sorts. Coming for a respectable hunting tribe, he doesn't go out of his way to find combat unless it is completely necessary (Turning into a bloodthirsty savage is a dealbreaker too). If there is another way to solve a problem other than starting a fight, he will look for it. He is terrified of what he has become and has spent most of his time searching for Terrowin to see if there is some sort of reverse, without high hopes. He is pretty jumpy and on edge because he doesn't really know if or when he is going to lose control again. He has become very adept at not being seen by others in order to fly under the radar of sorts. He is very passionate about hunting and if put in a social situations, will relate everything he can to it and talk about it for hours.

He does regret the pact and tries to stifle the creature at all times. he has become something of nightmares, but on the other he has also received the immense strength that he was searching for, so he tried to help others the best he can with it (which may or may not end well).

On another note, I could just roll up a different character if this one doesn't work for you as we don't have a Nano yet, we still have a few days till you want to start, right?

Armor:

Weapons:

Forearm Blade on right arm. 2 Dmg.

Backstory:

Dreithik has spent many lifetimes in the pursuit of knowledge. Why, When, and How? These are the questions that intrigued him the most and get him in the most trouble. Learning at a young age that he could converse with the dead, he as made it his mission to learn all he can about the Ninth World from them. This resulted in a few close calls of digging up grave yards and ritual cemeteries. Being shunned by others for his practice, he has spent most of his time traveling alone on his quest, learning to enjoy and trust the dead more so than the does with the living. Focusing brains over brawn, Dreithik has learned how to channel the coldness of death unto others through the esoteries taught by the dead themselves. Mostly using his power for profit by contacting lost loved ones for wealthy patrons, he has been known to embark on adventures if they have the promise of more answers and knowledge.

Appearance:

Beneath the black cloak and mask, Dreithik is the palest of pale, spending most his life at night and in dark depths finding "new" dead to learn from. He is a slender 5'11" man with a voice gone raspy from disuse and long black hair beneath the hood. Around his neck is a gold oval pendant that doesn't appear to match the rest of his attire, as it was his mothers who passed away while he was too young to remember, given to him by his father.

Personality:

Dreithik doesn't particularly like the living and believes that he is above them in some way. He will usually talk down to others and go about his ways unless there is something personally at stake that the dead cannot help with.

I've given this some thought and I don't think the focus 'howls at the moon' is appropriate for a PC, especially a PC who is part of a group.

Even if I let you start at Tier 2, you would still only be able to 'transform' at night and what worries me most is the fact that, when transformed, you attack 'any and every living creature within short range'.

I think I will pass on this PC but you're more than welcome to think up another one.

I like the idea of not everybody getting along perfectly, adds better roleplaying opportunities in my opinion. And there is also the PC connections to factor in to make things go a bit more smoothly.

I agree. I actually encourage minor character conflict because it does provide for good RP opportunities.

We'll have to sort out character connections (something new to me BTW) with selected PCs.

I'd like to express my interest as well. I've run a campaign of The Strange, but Numenera has always been the more interesting world to me. I haven't done a forum or play by post game before, but it seems pretty straightforward.

Appearance:
A medium-height olive skinned human with metallic blue eyes. A faint tracery of black thread-like wires can be seen beneath the surface of his skin. These meet at a point in the centre of his forehead, where there is a circular gridded disc, about 1” across. This is usually hidden underneath his headdress. He has no hair anywhere, on his body or on his head.

He wears a loose orange robe with a dark blue under tunic and black hide boots. The robe envelops his entire head like a mantle, leaving only his face uncovered. The robe also forms a wide-brimmed convex hat extending out to his shoulders. The hat can be folded away into the mantle, but he never removes the mantle in public.

His bow is slung on his back, along with a quiver of 12 arrows. His blade-staff is in a shoulder sheath. He wears a belt pouch to carry other items

Bio:
One day, Sica awoke with the knowledge that he had been created and raised for a purpose. He was to search out and activate all the Marker Stones located in the capital cities of the Nine Kingdoms of the Steadfast. His first task, however, was to locate the first marker, the Keystone, in the tunnels beneath Bodrov. He did so and was granted the power to locate the other Marker Stones. Why he was doing this was a mystery though; but he was driven to do it. It was also made clear that he was the only one who could activate the Stones.
He travelled throughout the Nine Kingdoms, seeking out and activating the Stones. He had many encounters along the way; he met up with his long-term travelling companions, the twin brothers Lorn and Dorn. He found loyalty, Lorn and Dorn risked their lives to save him from the Zhev in Qi and he learnt the meaning of betrayal when he abandoned them to the Kline Knives in the City of Bridges. He found that many people knew of his quest and that not all of them wanted him to succeed. The mysterious Lady Lissia, who he, along with Lorn and Dorn, first met in Qi, seemed to be acting as a guardian angel; turning up to help him when needed. He gained more clues about his purpose; the Marker Stones had to be activated in order to prevent a cataclysmic event; this was linked to the mysterious Red Star that had appeared in the sky and was being observed by many scholars across the world. He discovered that he awoke in Bodrov on the day that the Aeon Priests in the Durkhal first sighted the Red Star and that he was a Construct of the Order of the Stars.
The final encounter took place in the city of Orrila, in Milave. In a chamber deep beneath the city was the final Marker Stone. As Sica entered, from another entrance came Dorn, armed and ready to kill him. Lissia was a Nibovian Wife and had been using Sica to ‘recruit’ suitable mates. Lorn died battling his child, an Abykos, and Dorn was severely injured. The death of his twin drove him insane and he intended to stop thwart Sica at the end. They fought and Dorn was getting the upper hand when the Abykos that killed Lorn arrived; unable to differentiate between the two brothers, it had decided to kill both. While Dorn fought the Abykos, Sica activated the Stone.

[With a tremendous noise, earthquakes racked the world as ancient engines awoke. The full energy of the Sun was harvested and stored, then released. The entire planet twisted ninety degrees into another plane; one which had no Sun. The Red Star, a rogue planet whose orbit had been tracked and predicted millennia ago by the Order of the Stars; plunged through the space the Earth had occupied and continued its headlong fall into the Sun. The capacitors discharged again, rotating the Earth back.]

Sica stood in the chamber beneath Orrila. Next to him was a lump of half-melted stone; he felt he ought to know what it was, but his memory was patchy. There were huge gaps in it; he knew he had a purpose and a destiny to fulfil, but couldn’t remember what it was. At his feet lay a man he didn’t know; torn to pieces by something. Across the chamber was a woman; something suggested she might be incredibly beautiful.
“Goodbye Sica.” She blew him a kiss. “We may meet again. Remember; I would never hurt you, you are too useful and, frankly, you’re not my type.”

Current:
Sica is a biological construct built for a purpose. Maybe he should have died or self-destructed once that purpose was achieved; the reality is that he didn’t. Now he is seeking a goal in order to justify his existence. Once he finds that goal, he will pursue it.

Interaction:
Sica is seeking a goal, something to follow and believe in. Once he has this then he will do everything in his power to achieve the goal. The problem is that everything becomes secondary to the Goal (this is why Lorn and Dorn were abandoned to the Kline Knives; Sica had to choose between rescuing them or activating the Marker Stone

Combat:
Sica protects himself first at all times
He will protect those that can help him, unless achieving the Goal is more important
If given the choice between something he is Driven on and saving a team mate; he will always go with Driven.

Experience:
XP:

The was a solo Game I ran to try the rules out; I played it when on holiday so I ran a few turns every night.

Sica did get to Tier 4, when the world reset itself he was 'wiped' back to Tier 1. As the story suggests; probably he should have died. It might be interesting for him to have flashbacks of when he was something more.

Yeah, flashbacks and internal thoughts are very desirable in this type of game.

Numenera is weird enough to have a PC be living his 'second' life.

So just like I like fast-paced games, I also like fast-paced recruitments.

So unless someone speaks up and tells me they need more time, I will close recruitment this Thursday at 8:00 pm EST (roughly 72 more hours).

We can then finalize those PCs selected (cyphers, connections, etc.) and get started sooner than anticipated.

I plan on sending out the first turn this Friday.

Spend some time looking at this this other game I am running.

The gameplay thread has the turn recaps and all the 'playing' goes on the discussion thread. As you can see, I try to get 4-5 turns per week. In each turn, I will leave places (2-3) for players to add their input (roleplay).

A combat turn (1 round of combat) goes out every 24 hours so the players have 24 hours to respond. The non-combat turns can take a little longer but never more than 48 hours. However, the sooner you post the better because you can start tagging each other (playing off each others' posts).

No problem on my end! Antar Es is coming along nicely and he will be ready by then. Backstory and appearance have been tweeked a bit already.

As for the PbP+Numenera thing: While I am quite experienced in PbP, this will be my first time in the Paizo boards and a first time for Numenera. So, I am not sure if there us a dice roller or something in these boards or how things work. But, if selected, I will find out soon enough.

So there is a 'button' right below the box you type to post 'How to format your text'. If you press that, it will tell you some basic formatting, including dice rolling.

There are also a couple of guides in this link. Two are for players, one for DMs, and one general. Those are good guides to read.

However, be advised that the format for this game will be somewhat different. I like my games to read like chapters in a book so I compile all the posts from players, add new stuff, and send it out in a turn recap. The turn recap also includes out of character stuff sch as: status of PCs, ongoing effects, maps, loot, etc.

I know it sounds like a lot to learn but, like I said before, all I need are enthusiastic players and we'll take care of the rest.

Yes, I'm still accepting applications until this Thursday so you have time to get your name in the hat.

I look forward to reading about your PC.

Background
I was born and raised in Rarmon, the Pytharon capital city. At a young age I became enamored with the Sunken Palace, the home of Empress, which was in fact a giant numenera device. This admiration turned into a passion, with my curiosity sending me into every nook and dark cranny I could find in the city trying to find my own numenera devices. As I grew, I began exploring further afield, into deeper and darker caves and caverns. One day while exploring I was approached by a hooded man who said he was from an explorers guild called The Repertum Conlegium, headquartered out of Rarmon, and that they had been watching me. I was asked to join the guild as an apprentice and quickly took them up on the offer, if I recall I was around 22 at the time. By the age of 28 I had risen to the rank of Journeyman within the guild. In order to attain the rank of master, I was tasked with leaving my home behind and locating an artifact of great value that could help restore Rarmon to it's former glory. It has been left to me to determine what exactly that entails and I must not return until I am confident I have met the challenge.

About 2 years ago just after returning to the surface from the depths of a nearby cave I encountered a very small man named Srinim. The look and stature of Srinim intrigued me so I struck up a conversation. We talked for hours and I came to learn that Srinim had an accident as a young man while working in the local mines... an accident that was his own damn fault it turns out. After a tremor had passed through the mine he was working in with others from his village, part of the mine collapsed revealing the entrance to...something, something ancient and yet advanced. There was enough of an opening towards the exit that he could have dug himself out, but he decided to explore this newly opened passage instead. His memories of what happened next were a bit vague, but he had been transformed by the device he had found, the device shrunk him from nearly 7 feet tall to about 4 feet (though otherwise normally proportioned). Srinim admitted to me that since that day he had been trying to find a device that would return himself to "normal". I saw this as a grand opportunity to perhaps fulfill my mission for the guild and so we joined up.

As we pursued out mutual interests we would often have debates about the merits of armor. I refused to wear anything that would inhibit my ability to delve, whether that be climbing, balancing on a narrow ledge or squeezing through a tight spot. Srinim on the other hand refused to be without his cobbled together plate armor. I reckon it was about two years ago that tragedy struck. One day while Srinim and I delved deeper than ever into an ancient ruin I found an odd device which I felt confident could restore Srinim to his original stature. Unfortunately the device was damaged, likely just due to the lack of any upkeep over however many years the device had sat silent in these ruins. I thought I could get the device working again by rerouting some conduits to an external power source, unfortunately I cut the wrong conduit causing the device to explode. The explosion sent me flying, knocking me unconscious. While I was thrown clear of the device by the blast, Srinim was not. I can only guess as to what happened while I was unconscious but I awoke to find Srinim drawing his last breath, crushed under the weight of rubble. His armor crumpled, puncturing his flesh, pinning him where he fell. I tried in vain to free him but it was too late. It was my fault...I was responsible for the death of a very good friend. Since that day I have wandered, trying to find meaning in it all, trying to forget...

Personality
Zion is very hesitant to become close to anyone since losing Srinim, finding silence from his memories in the depths of the dark places he explores. He knows it is time to move on, to return to society so to speak.

Zion avoids direct confrontation whenever possible, and his refusal to wear armor was only strengthened that fateful day.

Ok, another PC worth consideration. Thank you.

Can you expand a little bit on his personality? What drives this guy? What does he fear? Any quirks and/or mannerisms?

Also, what does he look like? A picture is even better but a description of what others see when looking at him will do as well.

Questions?

Game on!

Appearance
Zion is average in height, standing at 5'11", and is fairly slender. His long brown hair is neatly pulled back into a tight pony tail. He is wearing a rugged pair of hiking boots, dark brown cargo pants with numerous pockets that tie tightly closed, a snugly fit light brown shirt that bears quite a few streaks of mud and rock dust and a black hooded cloak. Slung on his back is a rather full looking leather explorers pack. Hanging from his right hip is a meticulously carved dart thrower and strapped on his left thigh is a very utilitarian looking yulk, some would even say the yulk looks like it has seen more action against rock than it has any man or machine. Zion has a scar consisting of three spiral loops on his right arm. The scar begins between his thumb and index finger, then loops over the top of his hand and around his wrist. The scar loops two more times around his arm terminating at mid forearm.

(Sadly I am no artist and have never found a picture I liked.)

Miscellaneous other information
I am often asked about the origin of my name, if it is religious and if I was raised in a temple. The truth is my mother found the name etched on an old cypher she came into possession of and thought it would be a good name for her only son.

Zion has always been driven by his desire to explore further and deeper than any who have come before him. He hopes to one day restore Rarmon to its previous glory.

Due to the recent tragedy he endured, he is overly cautious about placing anyone else around him in danger. This has led to him being a bit of a loner for the past few years, so while he has no problem speaking his mind, he can be a bit awkward in social situations, he is a bit rusty on social norms.

He fears being responsible for anyone else being injured due to his mistakes, much more so than anything he might find delving the depths of ancient ruins.

I'm good to go, I'm on my computer most nights writing stuff so the time frame should be OK.

Your style of PBP play is different from what I'm used to so this Game should be interesting. I'm really looking forward to it.

Yeah, like I said; this play style is not common. I used to do this back in the PBEM time but have since adapted it to PBP.

I'm biased of course, but I think it really shines when the goal is an ongoing story that reads like a book.

Just waiting out to see if we have any stragglers out there and we'll get started.
