A Few of Our Favorite Things (Of 2018), Part 2

This past year has been a wild ride. As a look back on the year, I wanted to use this space to let the Paizo editorial team (developers, designers, editors, and art team) share some of our favorite things that we made or did during 2018. If you missed part 1 of this two-part blog, check it out here!

Thanks to Sonja and Emily on the art team for selecting the accompanying art, and thanks to all of you out there that have supported us in our endeavors. Happy Holidays!

To the Society’s Success in 2018!

When we thought of the topic of today's blog, we intended it to cover a variety of topics. But as we started writing, there were so many fantastic scenarios to highlight that the words just kept coming. So instead of splitting focus, I'll save my words for next week and turn the keyboard to Organized Play Lead Developer John Compton, as he summarizes the highlights from our 2018 Society products. To all our players worldwide, thank you for making our communities vibrant places of play. Cheers and Happy Holidays!

Wishing You Happy Holidays and New Year!

From a whole new adventure the Paizo crew has taken on with the announcement of the Pathfinder Playtest early this year, to new Pathfinder and Starfinder Adventure Path campaigns, and now our current Starfinder Playtest, 2018 has been an amazingly busy and exciting time. Earlier this afternoon we began sharing our retrospectives from the last 12 months and it's always so wonderfully surprising how quickly they've gone by. We also get to think on how grateful we are for the encouragement and feedback our community has extended to us as we explore new systems and ideas within our games, our community, and of course paizo.com. It's important to everyone in our office to take this moment to say: THANK YOU!

This past year has been a wild ride. As a look back on the year, I wanted to use this space to let the Paizo editorial team (developers, designers, editors, and art team) share some of our favorite things that we made or did during 2018. When asking the team for contributions to the blog, I received so many that we're going to break this blog into two parts, with the second part dropping next Friday.

Order of the Amber Die—Doomsday Dawn Playtest: Wrap Up!

Before letting the folks from the Order of the Amber Die get their final thoughts regarding the Playtest out there, I want to thank them for the heroic effort they made in getting this material to all of us. It was great not only hearing about the play experience and seeing the thorough data, but it was also amazing to gaze at the gorgeous pictures. So, thanks to the Order of the Amber Die! Take it away, y'all!

Additional Resources and Signal of Screams

This year's been a busy one, particularly with all of the work that's gone into creating Pathfinder Playtest scenarios, reviewing feedback, discussing the Second Edition organized play program's structure, and conveying that in a bunch of really big blogs. While that's been really productive from a looking-to-the-future perspective, it's been less fulfilling in the present because we had fallen way behind in our Additional Resources and Campaign Clarifications process. Over the past 8 weeks, the developers have revisited how we approach these books, devised better ways to streamline the whole process, and pushed through numerous months' content.

We Are Forsaken

Some of the exciting world-building I was able to tackle in the deluxe adventure Pathfinder Module: Cradle of Night revolves around vanished gods. Few mortals know that the Shadow Plane once had their own pantheon of wicked demigods, akin to the Eldest of the First World. Called the Forsaken, these demigods sought to expand their power and influence, but all of them mysteriously vanished at once, long ago.

Everybody Sing, Oh Yeah, It's a Critical Hit!

Critical hits are among the most dramatic, and most popular, moments in a Starfinder game session. A player scoring a critical hit is generally rewarded with cheers from fellow players, while an NPC scoring one often leads to groans and (hopefully good-hearted) booing. A critical hit can change the course of a battle, force new tactics to be adopted, and may also set a foe on fire, leave them insensate for a round, or even chop off a limb. Critical hits are rare, but memorable.

Honor Demands It

We're approaching the end of a glorious Starfinder Society year, and we wanted to make sure we ended December with a narrative bang. It's amazing to look back at everything we've accomplished. Not only did 2018 kick off with our introduction to morlamaws (yes, it's really only been a year), but it's also featured reality television events, much-anticipated pop concerts, and wildlife benefit fundraisers. We also saw the return of an ancient starship from Pathfinder Society, debuted Starfinder Society's first multi-table interactive special, and scaled up to two scenarios a month. Needless to say, it's been a busy year, and that calls for some more fun adventures.

Shattered Shields and Tattered Tapestries

December brings us two scenarios dealing with artifacts that play a vital role in the story of the Pathfinder Society, and perhaps in the future of Golarion itself (not to oversell you on the importance of playing these adventures or anything)!

You'd Better Believe It!

Over the course of Pathfinder's over 10-year history, adventurers have trekked all over the globe, pulling back the veil on distant continents and lesser known cultures in the Inner Sea. As stories of these travels filtered back and spread across northern Garund and Avistan, tales of foreign gods came with them, piquing the interest of religious scholars. Now, with PathfinderCampaign Setting: Faiths of Golarion, we're offering up the details of some of these faiths, with a few hotly anticipated divinities and notes from their authors:

December Update—Kudos, Spotlights and Conventions!!

To aid our community in scheduling their vacation, I wanted to announce the main Paizo events now, along with committee chairs if known. The Organized Play Foundation will call for volunteers, including GMs and Department Heads, later this month. It is our intention to arrange timelines so that volunteers know if they are selected well before housing lotteries or the closure of ticket sales.

Starfinder Society Class Playtest

With the release of the Starfinder Character Operations Manual playtest, the Starfinder Society Roleplaying Guild is also opening its doors to a limited form of playtest. Since these classes won't be released until late 2019, we're looking at allowing players the chance to try these classes out during the playtest period.
