I believe that the risk of having a bad GM is actually much lower in PFS because the GM has to stick to rules and cannot just play god-all-mighty despot which imho is usally the reason that a game is not fun.
The scenarios are usually good and balanced which helps junior GMs as well.
The only thing that I really hate is that I sometimes sit at tables where the GM or a player give me the feeling that they are not playing the game because they want to experience the story and roleplay but to just get a chronicle sheet. :-/
There are many kinds of bad GMs. :(
What I have seen in PFS, even in my limited experience with it, is some who don't know how to handle players who go at all off-script from what the scenario expects. Mostly that's inexperience, but it's inexperience that's easier to keep in an environment that structured.
Killer GMs are also a possibility.
Interesting Character |
I can see Interesting Character's argument as a reason for playing in some APs and Modules. I don't see the argument for never playing PFS at all. Just do both if you can. If you can't get into an AP or module game, at least you can get into a society game. I simply don't see how playing PFS is worse than playing nothing.
Well, what you are saying is exactly what I'm saying. I'm not suggesting to stay away from society play entirely.
Except for one thing, modules and APs are generally written along the same paradigm as society play, just not as strict.
One of my disappointments with paizo is the sharp focus on that paradigm.

the GM has to stick to rules
This is a bad thing in my opinion. If you need rules to GM, then in my opinion, you don't know what you're doing.
The rules are a distraction from the game, useful, but like the english language should be used without really being thought about. However, someone who learns the game as a game of rules fails to see this and instead worries too much about the rules and becomes blind to the aspects of play beyond the rules.

I respectfully have to say that I don’t agree.

May I ask why?
From my perspective, rules and an rpg is analogous to english and communication.
You don't communicate for the purpose of speaking english, rather, you speak english for the sake of communicating. And frankly, as long as the communication is successful, it doesn't much matter whether you speak english, french, or brainf*ck (yes, a real language, if one intended for computers). Some languages communicate some things better than others, but in the end, it's the communication that matters not the language.
Likewise, I don't join an rpg to play rules, instead, I use rules to play an rpg, and it doesn't much matter what rules as long as they accomplish their purpose, and like languages, some rules might be better for some things than for others, but it's the rpg play that matters not the rules.

I could run Strength of Thousands as a vc game on discord, but three catches,
1) I don't have money to buy the ap, so I'd need the group to pitch in for it.
2) I am looking to use my own mechanics, 3.5/pf1 gone in a different direction than pf2/5e. I want to test play it and this AP has the kind of downtime that would work well with reviewing and adjusting mechanics between segments without disrupting the narrative.
3) Scheduling is limited, right now that means weeknights starting around 23:00 central time in the USA.
(of course, while I'm offering what I'll do for free, if I got paid at least as much as much as I get from delivering uber [about $17-19/hour], then I'd be happy to run games instead of drive, which opens the scheduling possibilities dramatically. I'd also be willing to run whatever system the players want if I get paid. I'd be surprised if anyone would go for that though, but I figured I should at least give the option. Can't get a yes if one doesn't ask.)
Optional, I have a uniquely different setting that this AP would fit well with, if anyone is interested in exploring that.

I'm looking to play any PF2 AP but Extinction Curse(nothing against it, I got the entire thing as a humble bundle and spoiled myself.) Or one of the adventures. I've been doing PbP on Discord in a West Marches server, but I want to try a more ordered campaign with constant characters to grow with.
Currently thinking about a monk with a big family.
Also open to live play, but my schedule is a little weird.

So we recently had a recruitment thread for Second Darkness. 5 were chosen, but with the sheer amount of applicants, I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask a GM if they could run a campaign. There are custom made traits and it's at a 20 point buy. Here is the thread below:

I need test players and I'm willing to run any AP that the players help me aquire (I have the first three books of the Hell's AP).
The mechanics to be tested are heavy modifications to the d20 OGL, which means most 3.5 and pf1 content will be usable with minimal adjustment (save classes, which going classless means the class abilities get converted to a feat tree).
I would be running it over discord voice chat. The time would be late night in America on a weekday agreed to among the players, weekly.

I'm not interested in playing but I am very interested in these rules. Would you be willing to let anyone else look at them for the sake of curiosity and theorycrafting?

Absolutely! That said I'm in the middle of compiling them into digital files. I should have that as a download ready in a couple weeks. In the meantime, I can post about them and answer questions, but should do that in another thread.

Are you one of the many GMs out there, wanting to GM, but can't commit to a WEEKLY game... well, here's your opportunity to jump in without such a commitment!
I'm looking for a MONTHLY game... PF2 preferably, but would play PF1 as well. Available Monday, Tuesday, Thursday evenings PST.
Ander Warmfeet |
Well I can't seem to luck myself into a game so I will just post this character in here.
Ander Warmfeet is a chef with a kind heart, the Andoran protector of the wilds, the Order of the Paw Cavalier.
5-Things
1) He was inspired by the Eagle Knights of the Golden Legion as a child due to their Common Rule and their stance against slavery.
2) He is outgoing, fun and playful.
3) He is honest and trusting, even if there have been times where others have taken advantage of this “weakness.”
4) He loves to cook and host parties where he can show off his cooking skills with his friends and fellow adventurers, even if it is at a campsite deep within the darkest reaches of the Whisperwood. Along with this, he seeks out recipes across the land and fills them within his cookbook.
5) Though he loves other “humanoids” he will put the safety and protection of his best friend, Barzu, before anyone else.
2-Goals
1) Work on and publish his cook book “Ander’s Campfire Cuisine”
2) Continue his training and gain enough renown as an Order of the Paw Cavalier to catch the attention of the Eagle Knights and join the ranks of the Golden Legion to guard the far our reaches of Andoran’s borders and the trade routes. Keeping an ever-watchful eye on the nation’s wilder regions.
3-People (Blood, Romance, Honor | 2 Friends and a Foe)
1) Kentalla Fen – Female Half-Elf Ranger – Romance Foe: Early in Ander’s training he fell under the tutelage of Kentalla (a Ranger Beastmaster). He learned important wilderness skills from her; how to survive on the food your forage, seeing tracks and following them, how to handle wild animals and subdue them. She betrayed him on a mission leaving behind this once intimate bedfellow with nothing but a blade and one of her wolfdog pups, Barzu.
2) Lem Warmfeet – Male Warrior – Blood/Honor Friend: Lem is Ander’s uncle. Though if you were to look at the two, they could pass for father and son. Lem is a port guard off of the Andoshen River. Though they share the same heart to protect, Ander is not overly keen of water that him and Barzu cannot wade through.
3) Penax Blum – Gnomish Trickster – Honor Friend: Penax is Ander’s closest childhood friend. On the rare times they reunite, it is as if no time has passed. Though they can be best of friends, they fall on opposite spectrums of the law. Penax has fallen in line with smugglers and thieves that poach the inner sea’s coast. Ander tries time and time again to pull Penax away from could be his inevitable doom but is always unsuccessful. And Ander lets Penax run free.
3-Memories
1) Using the skills that he learned from Kentalla, Ander tried to train and raise Barzu. After many months of caring and training the dog, Ander seemed defeated. It would not listen or obey. That was until his campsite was attacked by a small goblin patrol. Caught off guard, Barzu quickly fled leaving Ander captive. Once bound and beaten during the patrol’s “questioning” Barzu struck back, killing one goblin and leading the others away to become lost in the hillside. Barzu returned and saved Ander. Their bond was iron clad from that moment on. The halfling and the wolfdog have mutual respect.
2) The first interaction with a solo Order of the Paw Cavalier, Jun Turneep. Though this was only a single night around a fire, Jun captured Ander’s heart for being a guardian of freedom. He joined the Order of the Paw and received his banner from Jun. He has never seen Jun since that night.
3) There was a camp of bandits that Ander came across. They had taken a woman captive and Ander had to stop them before their evil hands spoiled her any further. In the battle the woman was slain and Ander, along with Barzu, had to flee to fight another day. That woman’s face still haunts him at night. Was she a mother, a wife? Who was searching for their daughter? Will they ever find her in a shallow grave?
2-Secrets
Known Secret: Using his skills in nature, Ander offers his services as a guide and tracker to gain bits of information of what I going on in the surrounding region and where the Golden Legion are currently stationed. It might be childish, but he leaves messages for them with his deeds in the hopes that they will find and recruit him to be a Golden Legionnaire.
Unknown Secret: Kentalla betrayed Ander not because she wanted to hurt him, but because she was being hunted. She knew to save her lover’s life, that she had to make him believe otherwise. Kentalla knew that Ander would fight to the death for her if needed.
I am currently running two PBP games, but would love the fun of playing in one. Thanks for looking!

I am an experienced ttrpg player and DM looking to get in on more Starfinder AP's/campaigns so I can DM them in the future. So far I am playing in a Dead Suns campaign and I have played through Against the Aeon Thorne and Signal of Screams. I have also played some Starfinder Society games here and there. I am interested in pretty much anything Starfinder. I like long campaigns and I commit to the end. I am not really a min/maxer and I enjoy making characters with personality and backstory. My availability is evenings Tuesday through Thursday and anytime Sunday.

Hi, I'm not super great about putting myself out there, but everything I know about bloodlords has me really excited, and nobody I know would be interested in running it, so decided to just throw my voice into the mix. I know its a bit early to be making any concrete decisions, but if anyone is interested in doing so (whether it ends up happening or not) I'd be super excited to join in as a player. My discord is Demon Summoning Enthusiast#9882 if anyone wants to get in contact

Welp, that took me on a merry dive into what is out there on Geb. I was just looking around for a Strength of Thousands game (there don't seem to be a lot of 2E games on here yet) and I gotta say, a Geb game where you play some sort of undead-friendly (or undead?!) character is interesting.

Yeah, its super interesting looking! I tend to love all things undead though (well, undead, or infernal) so it compels me more than just about any other adventure path based on premise alone. My other groups have consistently fallen through, and I don't really know any gms who would want to run it, so more than likely its one I'll end up running rather than playing, but I can dream

Hullo!
Long time PF2e GM here, I've run (though never completed) Edgewatch, Extinction Curse, and some sessions of Tyrant's Grasp. I'm eager to get player experience for an AP, ideally for something besides Edgewatch or EC.
I'm on the pacific time zone and my ideal game days are on Sunday or Thursday and Saturday after 6pm (might be late every other week on account of work ending exactly then). Keen on trying any class, but I'm most accustomed to casters.
My discord is froncentrate#8060 if you'd like to discuss further!

The really crummy thing is that APs on PbP can be a slog. I'm GM'ing Reign of Winter and we've slowed down a bit. It's a multi year commitment, and the initial excitement can die down. However, there *are* those dedicated GMs and players out there, so don't give up!

Multi-year says it all. I ran a PbP on these boards that took 5 years 6+ months, and would have been just a little over 6 years, but I dropped 2 small areas that were easily bypassed. It was a box set that was a really big dungeon crawl (the players were warned when applying).
