Other than several dates with Setsuna and twice daily archery practice, Eugeni doesn't do a whole lot. He listens to any news being bandied about in the common rooms of the local taverns and generally thinks about their next moves.

His mind turns to settling down, and making a somewhat more normal life after this whole business with Karzoug is behind them. I have enough money now to buy a nice place in Sandpoint, or anywhere around here really. Maybe Setsu and I could even get married some day...I can't imagine leaving her after everything we've been through. She'd never lie to me or betray me in any way as far as I can tell.

Rilee:
She might have the the diplomacy skills of an egg, but...

"You clean up very nicely," Setsuna complements with a nod.

The Oracle holds up a piece of worked, sunset crimson dragonhide.

"For some reason, when we were in Absalom, Sabrina wasn't very impressed by your armor and pulled me aside for a long rant about how our great grandmother deserved better than ancient Azlanti moosehide. When I suggested maybe buying you something metal as a... late birthday present, she hissed at me like she was a vampire being exposed to sunlight. Evidently, Sabs seems to think metal armor saps away druidic powers, so I looked for something a bit more natural.

"According to Sabrina, there's no stronger hide than dragonhide, so I had a piece made for you. You're about the same size as some of Mom's Catfolk guards, so I was able to make an educated guess."

Rilee would remember that Jeevika's diplomatic delegation travels with a troop of Catfolk guards for additional muscle. Evidently, Catfolk and Elves get along really well.

"I even got it in your favorite color! So, uh, happy birthday!"

So apparently the writers chose to include data from the Library in the next book, because that is logical. Here is what you learned about Runeforge:

Runeforge was created as a place where agents of the seven runelords could gather to study magic. The runelords wove wards around Runeforge that barred entrance into the complex to any runelord or his direct agents, in order to keep the research within free from sabotage at the hands of an enemy. Runeforge’s magical enhancements sustained those within without the need to eat, drink, or even sleep.

Feel free to post any Riddleport/sailing RP in spoilers:

The sting of winter's cold becomes less painful, and some migratory birds slowly begin to reappear, signaling the end of winter and beginning of spring. The month of Pharast has arrived, and the Varisian Rangers find themselves basking in the breeze of the ocean as the pair of sailing ships loaded with cargo cuts across the Varisian Gulf south towards Sandpoint.

Five days later, the pair of ships pull into the Sandpoint Harbor. At first somewhat confused at the sight of not one, but two ships flying the flag of Riddleport docking at their small town, the citizens watching grow excited as they spy Zoli, Eugeni, Rilee, and Setsuna standing on the deck of one of the ships. By the time the group disembarks, they are greeted by throngs of hero-worshippers. Grateful citizens immediately set to helping unload the donated goods from the vessels.

As you slowly make your way through the crowd, you can make out, through the dull roar of mumbling onlookers, that many feel you have returned to investigate the Tower Street Sinkhole. As you manage to make your way past the crowd, a bashful, yet beautiful, acolyte of Desna approaches, "I b-beg your p-pardons Ser and Ladies. Father Zantus wishes to speak with you as soon as possible at the Cathedral."

Setsuna:

Rilee's eyes go wide in shock at the gift. She studies it while she speaks, then turns to give her a hug. "By the Sting, that's so generous! Wow. You're right about the old armor. I was ready to get rid of it anyway. It was-- well, nevermind. This is lovely! Thank you!"

She spins on her toes and picks up the wine glasses, handing her one and giving them both a soft clink in toast. "I don't really have a birthday, you know. Lots of rebirth-days. I don't even think this body is a year old yet." She looks down at it, sighing softly.

Pushing away whatever was troubling her, Rilee sits smoothly and invites Setsu to sit as well. "It sounds like Sabrina is very wise. Could you tell me more about her? My meeting with her was entirely too brief."

Clad in her new crimson armor and standing with much more grace and poise than ever before, Rilee nods politely and smiles at the nervous acolyte. "Indeed. We'll go at once. Would you lead the way?"

She whistles, and Olympus launches from his perch in the rigging and soars low overhead as they make their way through town.

Rilee:
Setsuna happily accepts and returns the hug.

"...You were actually wearing ancient Azlanti moosehide? How does Sab know these things?"

Setsuna takes a seat and a sip of wine.

"People usually describe my twin sister as whimsical or eccentric. However, I say that Sabrina is Weird. Capital 'W' Weird. That's the only way I can really describe her. She outweirded Mory, which weird because they both have that same weird, morbid sense of humor. Weird.

"Another thing to note is that Sabrina's timing is almost always perfect. Time and space seem to distort around her. Notice how we just happened to meet her at the most ideal time for us? Absalom is the biggest city in the world, and we ran right into her. And she just happened to have a friend with the resources, contacts, and influence to process a trade deal larger than the one that's taking us a whole month here in nine hours!"

"I'd say I'm probably better educated than her; she... left home when she was fifteen, so she lacks the same formal education I have. However, you're otherwise correct; like you, Sabby is definitely very insightful and naturally wise. While I can be very oblivious, few things seem to get by her. She manages her impulses infinitely better than I do, and she also makes very good observations about the various situations that she finds herself in."

"There is some overlap between us, though. We both get overwhelmed by large crowds of people. For example, Sabrina recently attended a wedding, and she basically sat next to Bentley under a tree and ate food the entire time. I probably would've hid in a corner the entire time. Remember how I barely talked when we first me? Putting aside how I was being hunted down, it takes me a while to get used to people. Same with her. Granted, I just go mute, and she starts acting... Weird."

"...Between you and me, in general, I think Sabrina is acting. Hamming it up on purpose. Being whimsy and silly so people will underestimate her. When it is just you and her, she changes radically. She calms down significantly and starts acting like... Mom, which is a very welcome change from a few years ago..."

The room seems to grow distinctly colder.

Setsuna nods and follows the acolyte.

She bows and heads through town along the main streets of town. It is quite clear that Sandpoint is still in quite the disrepair, with focus seeming to have been on repairing people's homes rather than the ruined businesses.

As you come to the intersection of Main Street and Tower Street, to your left you can see that, just north of the Garrison, is a thirty-foot-wide sink hole. It has consumed a portion of the Garrison wall to the south - several basement jail cells hang open in the sloping southern wall of the sinkhole. It is roughly fifteen feet deep, and you can all see a narrow opening along its northwest side at the deepest point which seems to be a tunnel leading underground.

Once inside the Cathedral, you are guided to Father Zantus' private chambers. Inside are Mayor Deverin and Sheriff Hemlock, as well as Father Zantus. As you enter, they all turn to greet you warmly, particularly Eugeni and Zoli.

"We are so glad you made it back safely. Tell us of what happened, if you don't mind?" she looks the group over and asks, anxiously, "What of Morythine? And Ameiko?"

Setsuna tells the authorities of Sandpoint the gist of the story.

The Varisian Rangers went to the Valley of the Black Tower between the Iron Peaks to stop the stone giant chieftain gathering the tribes of the Plateau People (and other assorted creatures) from marching this literal Giant army on Varisia. He was swiftly neutralized. However, the Rangers also learned that he was a pawn for some other evil jerk, and the Rangers have returned to Sandpoint to checkout what exactly the stone giant chieftain and his master wanted with the town in the first place. Meanwhile, the different fractions of the Giant army are now fighting amongst themselves. When the dust settles, they will probably be too exhausted to do anything else but disband.

"Mory parted ways with us on his own terms. Recent events wore him down, and he was tired of it all."

She presents the authorities of Sandpoint with the note they found in Xam's study.

"During the chaos the invasion, Xam kidnapped Ameiko. When I contacted him via Sending, he told me as much. I have no idea where they are now. Odds are that Ameiko is probably dead."

Sabrina:

Rilee sits with her back straight and sips her wine daintily as she listens attentively.

When she finishes, she notes the strain in the Oracle. "Well, she appears to have friends around her now. Being slow to warm up to people is hardly a rare trait. It's when you refuse to warm up that causes problems. If you'd like to talk more, I'll be happy to listen." She glances around the room. "Maybe someplace with fewer eyes and ears about. I think the Lady Pamodae enjoys collecting secrets."

She smiles brightly and reaches out to squeeze Setsu's hand reassuringly. "Speaking of people interested in secrets, I wonder if we should let your sister's wizard friend in on that library we found in Jorgenfist. He helped us greatly, and seems of the type who would appreciate the knowledge stored there. He may even share with us anything relevant."

Rilee suddenly grows sad. "Morythine is alive and well for the first time -- no, wait, second -- time in his life, but he has left us. Ameiko, we haven't found yet."

"Yeah, we made it back, but as they say it's not all roses and sunshine. What happened on Tower Street?"

The mayor and sheriff look to Father Zantus, who clears his threat before saying, "Allow me to begin by saying that, of course, we’re all very pleased to hear of your successes. Sandpoint owes you a huge debt of thanks for ensuring its safety yet again, and the supplies you've brought will help with rebuilding efforts immensely. And while I’d like nothing better than to let you relax and enjoy a well-earned break from your adventures, you’ve doubtless heard about our newest problem. A few days after you left, there was an earthquake, and the ground collapsed just north of the Garrison, right in the middle of Tower Street. The north wall of the Garrison took some damage, and while fortunately no one was seriously hurt when the sinkhole appeared, that’s not the case anymore. The guards Sheriff Hemlock sent into the pit to investigate never returned. That very night, we all heard something horrible down there: dogs howling—like no dogs I’ve heard before— and bloodcurdling screams. Sheriff’s roped the sinkhole off, and so far nothing’s come up out of it, but those sounds are growing every night. Whatever’s trapped in there wants out, and by the sounds of it, whatever it is isn’t too keen on emerging friendly.”

All three look to you expectantly.

"More of those hounds from Leng...? It would be a disaster if they got free. We should probably check it out immediately," Eugeni sighs. He gives Setsuna's hand a squeeze. All those dinners and quiet nights together in Riddleport were nice while they lasted.

I'm assuming we went on a few dates, had a good time Setsuna. Maybe Eugeni learned more about your past, and you likewise.

She looks at Eugeni, glad he had the same thought. "Right. I'm ready enough, unless you'd like to make sure your belongings are brought from the ship and stored someplace secure."

She whistles again, and Olympus lands next to her with a triumphant screech. Rilee reaches up and scratches his neck. "What do you think, big guy? Want to go inside a hole again?" The roc stretches his great wingspan and shakes his head.

"All right, then." She weaves a spell and bestows it upon Olympus, imbuing his natural weapons with magic.

Then she turns to the Oracle. "Setsuna, would you cast that spell that extends the duration of certain spells? One casting of that could make many of my spells last for most of the time it will take to explore this rift. Assuming it's a regular sinkhole. With unnatural dogs inside." Her smile becomes more worried.

The town leaders are thrilled to have your help again, and the sheriff suggests you access the tunnel from the jail cells, the climb being easier from there. As you head that way, you are met again with a crowd of hero-envious onlookers.

Eugeni Climb: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24
Rilee Climb: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22
Setsuna Climb: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17
Zoli Climb: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (16) + 10 = 26

You all manage the climb down without issue. The tunnel opens into a flight of stairs down, leading to the Catacombs of Wrath, as well as the flight of stairs that were previously collapsed. They are now cleared out, someone, or something, having removed the rubble. Descending these stairs eventually becomes difficult, the entire stairwell thick with webs.

@Eugeni: I'll get a post up regarding our dates. There's something Setsu would've wanted to try during their month vacation.

At Rilee's request, before heading down into the Catacombs of Wrath, Setsuna casts Blessing of Fervor and also throws up a few buffs of her own [1].

[1] After casting Blessing of Buffer, she casts extended Tears to Wine on the water in one of her canteens (which she drinks and offers to the rest of the group), Extended Delay Poison on herself, Extended Ironskin on herself, and Extended Abundant Ammo on Eugeni's quiver of choice. Setsu then chugs her renewable Potion of Ward the Faithful, spawns her cloak of shadows and Overland Flight inky wings, and then activates her Ring of Invisibility.

Before they go any further, Eugeni activates his new wand of mage armor on himself. Then he takes out the wands of shield and reduce person, holding one in each hand, ready.

AC is now 26 for the next hour.

Rilee takes advantage of Setsuna's spell and casts barkskin on Olympus, then refreshes the spell with Zoli's pearl and casts it on her, then refreshes it again with her own pearl and casts it on herself.

She then casts carry companion on Olympus when she sees that the corridor and stairwell are too small for Olympus to move freely. "Sorry big guy. I'll bring you back if you're needed."

When they reach the bottom, Rilee adjusts her glasses as she looks around. "There. That loose stone on the western wall, that's got to be a door."

Opening the door leads to a collapsed passageway, but a narrow tunnel has been cleared into a larger chamber beyond. The whole room is filled with fog, but the walls, floor, and even the arched ceiling of this place are covered with writing, the words spiraling and trailing in the ancient language of Thassilon. Some of the phrases are immense, with words nearly three feet high, while others are written in tiny, spidery script. The medium for the writing varies as well—sometimes dark ink, sometimes blood, sometimes carved into the stone itself. Passageways to the north and west lead into fog-filled tunnels.

As Setsuna makes her way invisibly into the room, a voice calls out, "Я знаю, что ты там. Можете ли вы сказать мне, что случилось с Thassilon"

Thassilonian:
"I know you are there. Can you tell me what happened to Thassilon?"

Setsuna pauses upon hearing the voice talking to her.

"э-э, oн упал тысячи лет назад. Кто хочет знать?" the invisible Oracle says in response as she promptly moves a bit to hide her presence.

Stealth: 1d20 + 22 + 6 + 20 ⇒ (10) + 22 + 6 + 20 = 58

"Uh, it fell thousands of years ago. Who wants to know?"

"Ах! Игра его, а затем! Вопрос вопросов, ответ на ответ! Я теперь известен просто как Scribbler. Мой ход. Какая страна заменила его?" the voice replies. "И не ври, что не был бы справедливым. я обещаю не лгать, а также."

Thassilonian:
"Ah! A game of it, then! Question for question, answer for answer! I am now known simply as the Scribbler. My turn. What nation has replaced it?" "And do not lie, that wouldnt be fair. i promise not to lie, as well."

Sense Motive (TtW): 1d20 + 7 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 7 + 5 = 21

"Звучит справедливо, г-н Scribbler. Чтобы ответить на ваш вопрос, никакой реальной нации по шкале Thassilon не заменил его. Область Varisia теперь состоит из многих городов-государств. С верхней части моей головы, наиболее важными являются Magnimar, Korvosa, и Riddleport."

Setsu's Reply:
"Sounds fair, Mr. Scribbler. To answer your question, no real nation on the scale of Thassilon has replaced it. The region of Varisia now consists of many city-states. Off the top of my head, the most prominent are Magnimar, Korvosa, and Riddleport."

The Oracle thinks about her question.

"Вы говорите свободно Thassilonian ... Вы агент Thassilon?"

"You speak fluent Thassilonian... Are you an agent of Thassilon?"

"Нет, Thassilon упал тысячи лет назад," he says before chuckling. "Кто правит земли выше сегодня"

Thassilonian:
"No, Thassilon fell thousands of years ago." "Who rules the lands above today?"

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 7 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 7 + 5 = 23

"В зависимости от города-государства. Что касается большой тройки ... Riddleport, по существу, в ведении полевого командира; ток один могущественный маг. Magnimar находится в ведении совета и лорд-мэр. Я думаю, что Korvosa имеет монархию. Кроме того, некоторые Эльфы имеют анклав на севере."

"Depends on the city-state. Regarding the Big Three... Riddleport is essentially run by a warlord; the current one is a powerful mage. Magnimar is run by a council and a Lord-Mayor. I think Korvosa has a monarchy. Also, some Elves have an enclave in the north."

Setsuna thinks about her next question carefully. Remember Mokmurian's note, she decides to take another stab (albeit an educated one) in the dark.

"Вы знаете что-нибудь о Runeforge?"

"Do you know anything about the Runeforge?"

She then quietly moves forward.

Stealth: 1d20 + 22 + 6 + 20 ⇒ (6) + 22 + 6 + 20 = 54

"Место учебы, созданная runelords, но выросли вне их контроля," he says seriously. "Интересный вопрос от одного так оторваны от Thassilon. Что стало с Runelord Karzoug и Runelord Alaznist?"

Thassilonian:
"A place of learning created by the runelords but grown beyond their control." "An interesting question from one so detached from Thassilon. What became of Runelord Karzoug and Runelord Alaznist?"

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 7 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 7 + 5 = 28

"Несмотря на то, что давным-давно упал, Thassilon оставил длинную тень на современную Varisia. Что касается Runelord Karzoug и Runelord Alaznist, Насколько мне известно, они по существу воевали друг с другом в коме; их войны выросли из-под контроля, и они должны были идти в стазис по какой-то причине. Весело, кто выжил достаточно долго позже, чтобы написать об этом книг," Setsuna replies with a giggle. "Теперь г-н Scribbler, почему же Runelords потерять контроль над Runeforge?"

Setsu's Reply:
"Even though it fell ages ago, Thassilon has left a long shadow over modern Varisia. Regarding Runelord Karzoug and Runelord Alaznist, as far as I know, they fought essentially each other into a coma; their wars grew out of control, and they had to go into stasis for some reason. Hilariously enough, someone survived long enough afterward to write a book about it. Now, Mr. Scribbler, why did the Runelords lose control of the Runeforge?"

He is quiet for a moment before replying, "On nikogda ne byl v ikh kontrole. Mne nuzhno nemnogo podumat'. Ta-ta seychas."

Thassilonian:
"It was never in their control. I need to think a bit. Ta-ta for now."

After the conversation comes to an end, Setsuna decides to take a look around. The Oracle first stalks to the west. However, the smoke proves to be rather bothersome, she attempts to dispel it.

Rolls on Roll20.

The smoke does not dissipate.

...Maybe Rilee can throw some wind at it.

Deciding to save her spells, Setsuna sighs and quickly returns to the group.

"Here's what happened."

Setsuna tells everyone all the details of the conversation.

"Rilee, could you try getting rid of that fog?"

Rilee uses the magic of the staff to conjure forth a gust of wind, which dissipates the fog...for a moment. It immediately begins to reform, but not before you catch a glimpse of the next chamber.

It is another large room that extends beyond the limits of your darkvision, but you can see more writing on the surfaces, a painted face on the floor, and two massive statues of a feminine figure, both seemingly looking at one another. On the far wall, you barely make out the edge of an altar.

Dispel Magic: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (16) + 11 = 27

Setsuna's second attempt to dispel the fog proves to be better than her first; the anti-magic bolt she fires has a little more kick to it.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Fog dispelled, moved onward into room via roll20 conversation.

Although portions of this cathedral have collapsed, leaving mounds of rubble on the floor and crumbling walls, the chamber retains its sense of menacing awe. Four black stone pillars support the arched roof forty feet above, and on the floor between them the image of a three-eyed jackal seems to glower from striations in the stone itself. This image glows with a soft rusty light that illuminates the entire room from below. Alcoves to the north and south contain statues of a jackal-headed pregnant woman. Each clutches a pair of kukris crossed over her chest, and a reptilian tail winds down around her taloned feet. To the west, what once might have been a stone pulpit featuring other statues seems to have been partially buried under an ancient collapse. The walls of this room are densely decorated with hundreds of scribblings and sprawling runes, written in much more intricate calligraphy than the previous chamber.

On either side of the glowing image are two massive statues of the same jackal-headed pregnant woman.

Perception: 20, Read Thassilonian:
On the base of the middle northern alcove-statue, four more lines read:

"Each stone the grace of seven lords,
ONE PART OF KEY EACH RULER HOARDS;
If offered spells and proper prayer,
Take seven keys and climb the stair."

Perception: 30:
The statues are in far better condition than those in the alcoves.

From the fog to the south, the Scribbler's voice calls out, "Я считаю, что это моя очередь. Кто владеет мощной магией сегодня в мире?"

Thassilonian:
"I believe it is my turn. Who wields powerful magic today In the world?"

Before Setsuna heads into the next room, she takes a look about the current one.

"The walls are covered in prayers and incantations to Lamashtu. All in Thassilonian."

Setsuna spots something in particular that stands out.

"And there's something else: 'If magic bright is your desire, to old Runeforge you must retire! For only there does wizards art, receive its due and proper start.'"

Perception: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (6) + 18 = 24

Setsuna notes the other one.

After hearing the Scribbler's voice, Setsuna decides to continue playing their game.

"Шифра Маги в Riddleport кажутся самыми мощными магическими пользователи в этом регионе. Эльфы коллективно, вероятно, самые сильные люди волшебным образом на Golarion. В частности, их королева. Эльфы коллективно, вероятно, самые сильные люди волшебным образом на Golarion. В частности, их королева и ее суд. Из человеческих наций, я бы сказал, что Cheliax имеет самую сильную магию благодаря своим пактов с адом."

Setsu's Reply:
"The Cipher Mages in Riddleport seem to be the most powerful magic users in the region. The Elves collectively are probably the most magically powerful people on Golarion. In particular, their Queen and her court. Out of the human nations, I'd say Cheliax has the strongest magic due to their pacts with Hell."

Setsuna takes a few seconds to think of her question.

"Где находится Runeforge?"

"Where is the Runeforge located?"

He chuckles, "Ха! Эльфы." At Setsuna's question, he laughs somewhat maniacally before saying, "Ах, Runeforge. Узнайте, что это место, я сделал! А как попасть в! Но я не могу сказать это вслух, что бы обман! Это еще одна игра, вы видите. Я спрятан как в стенах! Вы должны найти их все!"

As Zoli enters the chamber, his adds, "О, привет малышка! Вы обр меньше, чем вы звук!"

Thassilonian:
"Ha! Elves." '"Ah, Runeforge. Learn it's location, I did! And how to get in! But I cannot say it out loud, that'd be cheating! It's another game, you see. I've hidden both in the walls! You have to find them all!" "Oh, hello there little one! You arr smaller than you sound!"

While Setsu continues to riddle with her invisible friend, Zoli starts to poke about. She stays off of the glowing Lamashtu head, but gives a careful look to the unusually well kept statues, and to the writing on the walls.

When the voice addresses her, she does her best to curtsy in it's direction. "Меньший, и ожесточеннее тоже," she smiles. "Что вы ищете?"

Thassilonian:
"Smaller, and fiercer too," she smiles. "What do you seek?"

He chuckles, his voice now closer, further into the chamber. "Информация. Почему вы искать Runeforge?"

Thassilonian:
"Information. Why do you seek the Runeforge?"

Rilee:
You catch a glimmer of movement coming out of the fog to the south and into the chamber.

"Чтобы ответить на ваш вопрос, я ищу его, чтобы помочь тем, я забочусь о.

Thassilonian:
"'Information' is a bit of a non-answer. Surely you seek information about something, and likely in order to do something. What is it?

"To answer your question, I seek it in order to aid those I care for.

"And my next question: Who used to have dominion over this space? Karzoug? Alaznist?"

You hear the sound of a clicking tongue, "Жулик, обманщик! Один из вопросов, на один вопрос! Время разговора подошло к концу, мои сосунки!"

Thassilonian:
"Cheater, cheater! One question for one question! The time for talk has come to an end, my sucklings!"

You then hear words of magic being canted from somewhere in the room!

"The coastal town of Sandpoint has faced few trials and dangers over the course of its forty-two year history, but unfortunately, that is all about to change. Unknown to the town’s founders, they chose to build their community over the ruins of an ancient stronghold once used as laboratory and prison, a place where horrific experiments and unholy explorations into what divides man from monster took place. These are the Catacombs of Wrath, one of several such sites used by Runelord Alaznist’s apprentices during Thassilon’s height, a place where arcanists explored and perfected the stolen arts of lifeshaping and fleshwarping. When Thassilon fell, these catacombs went dormant, but the one buried under Sandpoint was not fated to stay that way."

Okay, so I am going to try my hand at the PbP GM'ing thing. And what better way to do it than with Rise of the Runelords! Some information about me to get started:

I am a full time nurse, and will be transitioning to night shift in the near future. 12 hour shifts. Loads of fun. Been married for almost 9 months. I travel to visit relatives frequently. I also have a weekly gaming group I attend on Sundays. However, I still, situation pending, find the time to try to post once per day in the three games I am currently in. The only things that really hold me up are if I have little to contribute to the scene or any of the above RL obstacles getting in the way, though I do my best to minimize such occurrences. A lot of the time I post from a mobile device, as my computer is currently being repaired. I am not a grammatical genius, nor am I a typing beast. I will make mistakes, so I won't hold you to any unrealistic standards regarding the English language, but the better you write and easier your post is to read, the better.

I like to keep things moving at a decent pace, and as such, will be looking for posts from people at least once per day, exceptions being the weekends. If you have nothing to really contribute to the current scene for the moment, please say so out of character and I will be fine with that. If things are ready to progress in-game, and we are waiting for actions from someone, I will post out of character a request for that individual to act, and if 24 hours pass, I reserve the right to DMPC that characters actions for the round, or move the scene along without their input.

So, if you are fine with what you've read so far, I invite you to apply! Here is the character creation to follow:

Starting Level: 1st level

Stats: 2 options. First is 20 Point Buy. Second is Roll 4d6 drop the lowest, if overall modifier total is less than +4, you may then do a 15 Point Buy.

Alignment: I am going to be allowing any alignment here, though I am expecting every character to have something that motivates them to take part in the campaign. Also, I am a firm believer that an Evil character does NOT have to be maniacal. In fact, true villainy comes in a form that makes the masses love them. If you elect to play an evil character, they stand a far better chance at acceptance if they play well with others. Also, your character will be accountable for their actions. If you are caught committing a crime, expect to be pursued and/or punished.

HP: Max for 1st level; after that, you can either roll upon leveling up or take the average.

Classes: Core Material available on the SRD will be accepted, minus Gunslinger. Sorry, not a big fan.

Races: All races except the following will be okay: Ratfolk, Tengu, Grippli, Samsarans, Strix, Vishkanyas, or Wayangs. If you choose to play something monstrous, for example: a Kobold, explain why you are tolerated in civilized lands.

Drawbacks: I will be allowing Drawbacks.

Traits: Two, one being a campaign trait. So with a drawback you have potential for three traits.

Wealth: Max starting wealth.

Downtime: I will be allowing some of the downtime rules in regards to businesses and teams. The campaign takes place mostly in and around Sandpoint, so if you want to develop roots here, I encourage you to do so. Also, if you want to do some crafting, opportunity will be available from time to time.

Submitting a Character:
Create a profile/alias and include relevant information and mechanics inside. I’m going to be asking that character submissions follow this format, stolen from Jelani. You don’t have to follow that exactly; as long as it’s not a nightmare to read and the information is all there, I’ll be content.

Be sure to include the following in your profile, preferably at the bottom and in spoilers:

Description - Please provide a description of your character as if someone were seeing them for the first time. If you have a picture reference, please include it.

Personality - Self explanatory I hope.

Background - Your character is not a hero of great renown, at least not yet. Feel free to go as in depth as you'd like on this section, but keep in mind that you are level one, and while above the cut of your average soldier or town guard, you haven't done any great wonders yet. Also, I am not blind to the fact that this AP has been out for ages, and many of its features are not so secret. If you have knowledge of the campaign, I invite you to have your character be FROM Sandpoint, and you can incorporate some tidbits of this knowledge in your background. However, I do ask that you do your best not to use out of game knowledge to drive character actions. If I suspect any metagaming to be taking place, I will put an end to it in my own, most likely harsh, means. Also, if you go this route, I expect you to include at least 1 rank in Knowledge (Local) in your character to represent this added insight. In this section, include why and how you came to Sandpoint for the Swallowtail Festival.

Your characters will be able to interact prior to game start in the Gameplay Thread, partly as a way to have fun and pass the time, partly to help me evaluate your posting style/frequency/character personality. The pre-game RP will be taking place during the festival.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Recruitment will be open until February 7th, and I will try to make my decisions by the 9th.

4d6 ⇒ (4, 2, 6, 1) = 13 12
4d6 ⇒ (4, 3, 5, 6) = 18 15
4d6 ⇒ (6, 5, 3, 5) = 19 16

Oh, RotR? I totally forgot you were doing this!

Hmm... to bring back Baern Steelskull, the headbutting Fighter of Pain, or perhaps that one Shoanti Oracle/Sorcerer..

Kagehiro, what are you aiming for?

Utterly clueless for the time being. With that stat array, I can pull off pretty much anything.

Grand Lodge

Hello, I started this previously, but the game fell apart before we got too far so I don't have too much knowledge of it. I am working on changing over my character to your preferred format.

I would really love to play through this!

Indeed. I'm going with the point-buy myself - always prefer the point buy. I could possibly bring back this guy, the aforementioned Shoanti Oracle.

He'd eventually go Sorcerer and then Mystic Theurge - but.. I'd need to revise him, as I found out quickly that he was horrible early-game. -5 ranged, -3 melee? XD

Then theres the Dwarven Foehammer who specializes in a Dwarven Longhammer combined with a Dwarven Boulderhelmet - a Giant Hunter, as it would be.

..perhaps something else, though. Hmmm..

Dotting for interest. I'm thinking an human cleric of Desna or a rogue (can't decide if I want them to be a human or Tiefling...)

I may just bite the bullet and jump on a Paladin. Giving consideration to another wizard, too, but my idea is a little far-fetched for that one. Haven't done a Lawful Stoopid in a good while.

I'm interested in applying with a character that would begin as an Oracle, and end up taking levels in Paladin, Ninja, and perhaps even Monk and Ranger down the line to become a competent melee combatant with a variety of other useful tricks. One piece might be pushing it too far, so I'll ask if you would consider the following two abilities to stack for Reflex saves. I would probably stick with the character concept even if you rule Cha to Reflex only applies once.

Divine Grace (Su)
At 2nd level, a paladin gains a bonus equal to her Charisma bonus (if any) on all Saving Throws.

Sidestep Secret (Su):
Your innate understanding of the universe has granted you preternatural reflexes and the uncanny ability to step out of danger at the very last second. Add your Charisma modifier (instead of your Dexterity modifier) to your Armor Class and all Reflex saving throws. Your armor’s maximum Dexterity bonus applies to your Charisma instead of your Dexterity (see FAQ.)

No, I wouldn't let those stack. Also, try to avoid a character that has to have 3+ classes to work. The idea of a team is that not everybody is capable of everything, but rather each part makes a cohesive whole that relies upon the specialties of the others involved to survive.

4d6 - 1 ⇒ (1, 2, 5, 1) - 1 = 8 -2 -1
4d6 - 1 ⇒ (6, 6, 4, 1) - 1 = 16 10 +3
4d6 - 4 ⇒ (4, 4, 5, 6) - 4 = 15 7 +2
4d6 - 4 ⇒ (5, 5, 4, 6) - 4 = 16 10 +3
4d6 - 1 ⇒ (4, 6, 1, 4) - 1 = 14 5 +2
4d6 - 1 ⇒ (6, 1, 3, 5) - 1 = 14 5 +2

So, that's a 35 point buy with a +11 total.

Also, I think you may not be familiar with all the features of the forum. If you put dice rolls in a post and then press "preview", you can see what the results are going to be without making the visible to anyone else. This means that people familiar with how the forums operate can do the 4d6 roll and choose to do the 20 point build without you ever knowing they tried the dice rolls first.

One good thing about how the system does dice rolls. If you do a die roll in a thread, the system remembers that roll whether you post it or not, and if you "try again later" it gives you the SAME RESULT. One bad aspect is that if you post a bunch of die rolls, and the go to insert another one in the middle of the post, that DOES change the results from that point down.

I ma currently awaiting the results of another RotRL application thread. If I don't make that game, I'll modify the character build for this result set. I REALLY don't know where I would put that 8, though. I might well leave it in Strength . . ..

I am kinda banking on people being honest, as if they are going to be so dishonest over a risked 5 Point Buy difference, I'll catch em in something eventually and they will be sucked into a demiplane with a Balor.

Alright, I think I've narrowed it down to three likely choices:

  • Human Wizard with a wonky background. (Effectively a Sin Mage Abjurer)
  • Aasimar Synthesist Summoner who is bound to the same archon that sired his planetouched blood.
  • Human Paladin; who would hinge on the amount of draconic encounters in the AP.

  • I'm actually thinking of a Halfling Summoner myself - a tag-team duo of con artists. The Eidolon would be a small, bipedal Eidolon focused around skills more than combat.

Alright, I have to decide between 3 characters.
1 - Stigandr Brokenshield, Ulfen Fighter (maybe ranger down the road)
2 - Khair abd Bahram, Kellish Cleric of Sarenrae
    3 - Sabletail, Tiefling Rogue
So, since I cannot decide, I'll let the die be cast.
    Roll!: 1d3 ⇒ 3

I have been wanting to throw a Barbarian at Rise of the Runelords for ages, but really haven't gotten around to put that idea into play - most times, when I arrive on the recruitment threads there are already others putting forth a barbarian type, and I end up leaving things at that - this time I am giving it a shot :D

    4d6 ⇒ (5, 5, 6, 5) = 21 = 16
    4d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 3, 3) = 18 = 15
    4d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 6, 3) = 15 = 13
    4d6 ⇒ (4, 3, 3, 3) = 13 = 10
    4d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 6, 3) = 21 = 18
    4d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 2, 6) = 16 = 14

    Wow....

DM Thron, are you allowing Archetypes? Was planning on an Invulnerable Rager if possible.

Archetypes from core material are fine.

    4d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 2, 6) = 19 17
    4d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 1, 4) = 11 10
    4d6 ⇒ (1, 6, 3, 2) = 12 11
    4d6 ⇒ (4, 5, 2, 6) = 17 15
    4d6 ⇒ (3, 5, 4, 5) = 17 14
    4d6 ⇒ (6, 2, 4, 5) = 17 15

Rogue eventually going into sorcerer and arcane trickster...
    Str 15
    Dex 15
    Con 10
    Int 14
    Wis 11
    Cha 17

or Rogue eventually going into wizard and arcane trickster...
    Str 14
    Dex 15
    Con 15
    Int 17
    Wis 11
    Cha 10

Will need to do some pondering...

Great! I have already an idea on a character personality, and reasons for being in Sandpoint, so I'll get working on the crunch, backstory and board alias as soon as possible. Thanks DM Thron.

I was in another RotRL that went kaput during the climax of Book One. I'll try to keep that in mind for my backstory.

    4d6 ⇒ (4, 6, 4, 1) = 15 14 (+2)
    4d6 ⇒ (4, 3, 3, 4) = 14 11 (0)
    4d6 ⇒ (2, 1, 4, 1) = 8 7 (-2)
    4d6 ⇒ (1, 2, 1, 5) = 9 8 (-1)
    4d6 ⇒ (2, 6, 6, 5) = 19 17 (+3)
    4d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 4, 4) = 20 16 (+3)

So that's a net +5 modifier right there. The negative mods are a little painful, but I'll see what I can do with them. Some kind of caster seems likely.

Lot's of RotR's on these boards lately...

    a conspiracy perhaps?

Never played, sounds fun, let's see what the dice have in store...

    4d6 ⇒ (1, 1, 5, 3) = 10=9
    4d6 ⇒ (6, 5, 2, 1) = 14=13
    4d6 ⇒ (6, 2, 3, 3) = 14=12
    4d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 6, 2) = 16=14
    4d6 ⇒ (2, 5, 1, 5) = 13=12
    4d6 ⇒ (6, 2, 4, 5) = 17=15

Hmmm, now it's off to the drawing board!

I have Ravboom here. He was built for a Kingmaker game, but I had some OOC trouble with one of the other players, and it kind of ruined the game for me, so I dropped out. I still like the character though.

I believe he's already built on a 20 pt build, and he's already built for max gold starting level. He's a LN gobby who was a former slave who escaped, so he didn't really grow up in a normal gobby den. I'd modify the background to fit better, and tweak the traits, obviously. If he's even remotely acceptable.

On a secondary note, I run 2 games on here, and am in several games, and only had trouble with one person in OOC so far, so I think that was an abberation. But if you don't feel comfortable having me in with that revelation, I understand.

    Grand Lodge

I have finished adapting Cerin, let me know if there's a problem with his feat (or anything else). Do you allow rolling for a Variant Aasimar Ability?

Hey Thron, I've been wanting to play RotR for a while now (and have held off on reading it) waiting for the right GM to offer it. It's great to see someone who I've played with before and know is a good writer!

    4d6 - 3 ⇒ (3, 3, 6, 6) - 3 = 15
    4d6 - 2 ⇒ (4, 2, 4, 5) - 2 = 13
    4d6 - 2 ⇒ (5, 3, 3, 2) - 2 = 11
    4d6 - 1 ⇒ (1, 5, 6, 5) - 1 = 16
    4d6 - 3 ⇒ (3, 5, 6, 6) - 3 = 17
    4d6 - 5 ⇒ (5, 5, 6, 6) - 5 = 17

...and Holy Carp, those are some fine rolls. If you want to tone that down some, just let me know.

Tentatively thinking a Bard, either vanilla (no archetypes) or an Archeologist.

You can do anything you want with those stats, even a monk. :P

Hello, I'd be interested in playing an arcane caster of some type, probably a witch. I'll need to read over the players guide before I finalize the idea and wor out a background. I'll try to have a framework up by tomorrow and a background by Sat.

Thron, do you know what size party you're going for?

Everything is in the profile for the character! Hope to be chosen. (Used 20 point buy because my die rolling luck is awful.)

Hi DM Thron. I'd like to apply with this character. The fluff's all there, but I need to rebuild for a 20 point buy, spend some more money and select a campaign trait. I'll try and do that tonight.

    Silver Crusade

Interested, let's see what I get for stats before I go too crazy on ideas.

    4d6: 4d6 ⇒ (4, 1, 3, 3) = 11 10
    4d6: 4d6 ⇒ (4, 5, 1, 6) = 16 15
    4d6: 4d6 ⇒ (4, 5, 6, 5) = 20 16
    4d6: 4d6 ⇒ (2, 6, 5, 4) = 17 15
    4d6: 4d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 5, 4) = 15 14
    4d6: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 3, 4) = 19 16

    Hot damn.

    Silver Crusade

So I'm thinking a sword and shield two weapon fighter. I even get to be good at some skills.

I'll get a build posted some time after I get home from work and can play with HeroLab.

Going for a party of 5.

Variant Aasimar and Tiefling bloodlines are fine, but not doing the variant ability table, unless you take the feat, and if you do so, I will make the roll for you.

Ravboom, you will need a VERY good reason why you are tolerated in the town of Sandpoint as a goblin. Just a heads up.

That's pretty much a given no matter where, as I understand it, being a goblin. :) I was thinking of taking the Monster Hunter campaign trait, and adjusting his background to be that he'd been hunting monsters in and around Sandpoint for the last 3 to 6 months or so. That way the locals had gotten used to him (usually used to him bringing in things for bounties). Not necessarily in love with him, but he's 'that scary strong little gobby that keeps bringing in giant scorpion tails' rather than 'that stupid gobby!'. :)

I've got a wannabe golemcrafter I'd like to bring in.
He was in a Runelords game already, but got two encounters in before the game died. Happy to start him again though.
    Does that sound alright?

    Dark Archive

    4d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 5, 6) = 23 18
    4d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 2, 6) = 16 13
    4d6 ⇒ (6, 3, 2, 1) = 12 11
    4d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 6, 6) = 19 18
    4d6 ⇒ (1, 6, 4, 2) = 13 12
    4d6 ⇒ (1, 2, 6, 4) = 13 12

WOW, I didn't know it would remember rolls. I accidentally refreshed the page and lost my post, so I was expecting to lose that roll.

I may try some kind of Bard or else a divine spellcaster (probably an Oracle or a Cleric) there appear to be a lot of arcane spellcasters already.

Profile updated with the exception of adding more equipment. As a monk, he doesn't need much in terms of gear, but as a dhampir, healing is an issue.

DM Thron; is buying a potion of inflict light wounds before the campaign begins permissible? Some DMs don't feel comfortable with starting PCs having magical items, and it's a rather odd item (something only a dhampir would gain any benefit from, aside from use as some kind of magical poison). If allowed, I'd probably buy two for extra survivability.

Hello again, this is Edeldhur's Barbarian submission - crunch is somewhat finished, to give an idea of the mechanics about the character. I am still on the fence regarding the Pride drawback, but I'll mull it over some more - fluff to follow.

OK, cool. Halfling Archaeologist in the works. He'll be a good sneak and trapbreaker, with bard spells & a bit of archery.

Ideas buzzing for fluff now. More details sometime this weekend.

Harakani: Sure, I will discuss any issues I think of with you at a later date (at work, shhh).

Morythine, and everyone else: If you can afford it and it is core material, you can buy it.

Well since Gyr is going sneaky-sneaky type, I'm going to avoid my sneaky summoner/eidolon - since I know Gyr is an excellent writer, I don't want to compete with him given the excellent entry he'll likely post :P

Expect a Dwarf. Love me some dwarves.

Ooops! Crusty, wasn't trying to step on your toes.

If you're feeling attached to your sneaky summoner, I could take my Archaeologist concept toward Swashbuckler too, just let me know...

Actually I've come up with a new and improved concept.

A Dwarven Spellkiller Inquisitor - a purger of heretical arcanists. Need to work in the fluff on why he's in Sandpoint obviously, but I'll come up with something.

I've decided to run a half-elf witch, with the beast-bonded archetype. I figure he can be the "crazy" hermit of Sandpoint, living on its outskirts but stopping by every so often to sell scrap. He'll be awkward, but kindly enough to keep watch on the goblin population for the people of the town (hence the Goblin Watcher trait).

I already like the Avatar Mahorfeus :D

    Silver Crusade

Ok, I'll be submitting a character named Kala Steelheart shortly.

    DM Crustypeanut;

Would you allow the ACG trial classes? Specifically, I always thought a Shoanti would make a great Brawler...

    Thanks

    Silver Crusade

DM Thron is the DM for the AP.

Sorry, yeah I'm not the DM XD I just use this profile as my general posting profile - I am a DM in a few campaigns, but not this one ;P

    Dotting...now for a concept..

I'll let the acg classes fly.

Also, just wanted to remind everybody to try to keep any heroics in your background to a minimum, as your true legacy will be beginning in Sandpoint.
