I'd love to complete another AP here on the boards. Yes, the last one took, umm, three and a half years? EF ran Shattered Star for us, he'd could tell you more about it.

With the new year, I am considering starting a campaign on PBP, for PFS credit, and looking for recommendations on which to run. It will be my first campaign I have ever run.

I am very interested in this once you start looking for players. I was in one AP that flamed out pretty quickly last year and have been searching for another campaign to join ever since.
Any one in particular that you would like to play? I am open to options..

Honestly I don't know enough about most of the APs to really have one picked out. I can say that the techno theme of Iron Gods doesn't appeal to me at all. And I don't think the open world concept of Kingmaker would lend itself well to PbP.

But I'm also open to a longer mod if that seems more feasible.

I've got a Goliath Druid I've wanted to get into a Giantslayers AP for a while now. I've tried twice and failed.

But I agree with Shifty in that a long mod has a better chance of success unless you choose the players based on previous experience and know that they are reliable. The emerald spire superdungeon would probably also work.

You can also count me in if you want to do this! I've not played any APs at all so I'm keen to do so. However I have the whole card game of skull and shackles, so that is particularly interesting for me to see how the card game stacks with the actual AP.

Silver Crusade

Yeah, I'm very glad I took players I knew well for my Iron Gods campaign. You've been around the forums long enough that you've seen a lot of players play alongside you/GM for you, so you probably have a better idea of what to expect than a brand newcomer to the forums does.

For what it's worth, the AP's I'm most interested in playing are Curse of the Crimson Throne, Wrath of the Righteous, and Hell's Vengeance.

Scarab Sages

"Iron Gods," "Reign of Winter," and possibly "Mummy's Mask" all interest me. How do you feel about custom/non-Paizo/adapted 3.5 content, by the way? I do a lot of Society play here, and I relish opportunities to play with unusual material (to give you an idea of where I'm coming from, I spent the '000s feverishly collecting 3.0/3.5 books and making up my own stuff, but almost never getting to play with any of it).

Knowledge Checks -Sky Key Solution Aid Token

For those showing interest, I will keep you in mind. I do plan on keeping in campaign mode and having some house rules.(IE open up some races, allowing some feats with different prereqs, maybe some variant classes, etc) But i probably will not go hog wild and incorporate anything out side of Pathfinder, since I am mostly familiar with this system.

Looks like you have a lot of volunteers, Z.D. After many different attempts to play, I ended up taking over yet another failed RotRL game, and we have been going strong for just over a year now and are about to finish book one.
The best thing that I can tell you is to echo Shifty.. find a good group and keep it small. It is much easier to wrangle 4 players for an extended time than it is to wrangle 6.
Other than that, keep in mind your own limits and responsibilities. Balancing PFS/ Flaxseed with the rest of your life can be challenging enough before adding in the commitment of an AP. I had two games prior to this one where I was GM and they failed.. partly due to life, or we would reach a slow down in the AP and things would drift off, or because I would overcommit, leading back to a slow down and drift.

Good luck and best wishes for your endeavors!!

I would be interested in an AP also. Of the ones mentioned, Reign of Winter, Hell's Vengeance, and Giantslayer would be the most interesting.

I would be interested in an AP as well.

I'm one of the failures at running an AP, just so you know.

I like going deep with modules. I run one for a group, and if I wind up liking the group, I run a reunion game for that group that links up in some way. It gives me a chance to explore a bit of territory in a more sandboxy way without going whole hog on modules.

There are also ways to approach the mini-campaign by doing a series of scenarios with the same group.

You could do a Kaer Maga sequence by combining City of Strangers I, Godsmouth Heresy, City of Strangers II. You could do a sequence of Hao Jin Tapestry scenarios, or do all the Blakros Museum ones (though it might be hard to do them all here, since those are popular and most people have played some of them before.). One GM is doing an extended campaign of Baby, it's cold outside -- a whole bunch of winter themed scenarios from PFS.

I think a PFS mini-campaign could have lots of advantages, including the ability to break for a couple months while you allow the PCs to play other things, and then come back for a reunion game when you're fresh as a GM.

Hmm

Oh... and while you all are planning your future campaigns, why don't you go ahead and mark your calendars with the upcoming 2017 PBP multi-tables and gamedays!

__

FAQ:

Can you tell us more about Cosmic Captive?

I'm so glad that you asked! Cosmic Captive is the most recent multi-table special, and it is an absolute beast for prep. Fortunately, Iammars (Jen McTeague) put together the same tier-by-tier statblock cheat sheets for Cosmic Captive that she did for Sky Key Solution.

Since this one is three scenarios in one, with different routes, I am going to suggest that GMs muster their games by preferred routes: Earth, Water or Fire. We'll try to split up the tables accordingly.

This will also be the first gameday for which we'll be doing central registration not only of GMs but also of players, so that we can catch everyone with a group announcement if we need to do so.

GM Hmm, why are there only three dates listed up there for 2017?

We want there to be break times when there are no "events" going on but regular PbP play. Having nothing but specials makes them no longer feel special, and everyone needs to breathe.

GM Hmm, why those dates?

They were picked in order to avoid the holiday season, Paizo Con and GenCon. It's hard to schedule a twelve week game day without hitting one of those hard markers.

GM Hmm, what if I have a question that isn't in your silly FAQ?

Ask away! In fact you might want to click the announcement thread linked above and ask it there so that we can discuss all this more in detail.

Hmm

I enjoyed your Honor's Echo game, Z.D.! I'd be happy to play a longer-term game with you.

That's going to be a pretty solid 2017 :)

BuA should finish at the end of Feb.

CC will run June to mid Jul

Aug-Nov will be GDV

Not a lot of room to squeeze much more in - I'll have to leave Runecarved Key until Jan 2018! :)

Oh boy, I'm gonna have to survive, and then rush Morrin to 19.2 for Runecarved Key.... I think it will be doable.

Runecarved Key you say. I may well have a group of level 19.2 core players for that...:)

VC - Sydney, Australia

In this case 'Race' is a bit misleading, could be a ways off yet... :p

That's fine, they have just hit level 15. We finish All for Immortality tomorrow then it will probably be Moonscar, an AP segment, Witchwar Legacy and then a final AP segment.

Unless John gives us some new high level seeker content this season.

This... kind of confuses me?

Is the scenario that poorly written, or has power creep reduced it's impact?

Don't have any horses in the race at the moment as it were, as my highest isn't even Seeker-level yet.

The scenario was written for up to 15th level.

They were running 19th level characters.

It was written to be able to scale to level 14-15, but is still playable by all level ranges. It's just they would use the 14-15 part of the scenario, which would be quite underwhelming for 19th level characters.

Exactly as TOZ said. Even with generous GMing, it's not much of a challenge to 19th level murder hobos. So they began buffing the enemies. It made it amusing for everyone, which is why we play, right?

So, I was thinking of trying my hand at running a PFS PbP. I don't have many PDFs, but my preference is The Godsmouth Heresy. Granted, that could potentially be too long or big for a first scenario.

I've been a PFS player and sometime GM for several years now, and have played and ran Pathfinder and 3/3.5 home games for much longer, so experience isn't a problem. Honestly, my biggest hurdle right now is how to upload maps onto Google Slides. Is there a guide for this stuff?

Saving Cap'n Crunch wrote:

That was the biggest obstacle for me, too. Draw is a little easier than Slides, so I started there. It's actually pretty easy, just copy and paste the map in.

I think Godsmouth is one big map, so you'll probably want to cover up stuff. Look for the icon that is a circle overlapping a square. From that menu, choose "Shapes", and then most likely a rectangle. That will allow you to hide each room until the PCs get into it. I've played the module before, so if you want I can walk you through creating the map.

High five!

Great to hear!

You are right, Godsmouth can descend into a slow grind and might not be the best bet for kick off - you may ended up jaded if it isn't the fun you expect.

Grabbing a few of the freebies might be an easy way to cut your teeth as well:
Master of the Fallen Fortress
First steps (Part 1)
We Be Goblins series

There are a few other freebie mods, but run those after you have got your look and feel down pat.

Google slides is the way to go FOR SURE.

There are a couple of cool guides stickied
HERE - have a look at Painlord and DH particularly.

Let us know what your questions are and we'd be happy to help.

It's really easy once you get into it all...

Thanks for the quick responses, I already feel almost good to go! I just need to pick a scenario. I do have most of those freebies and will probably do one of them, I was pretty much only thinking about Godsmouth so I could get some XP onto my shiny new Coread. I think that this'll be fun and not too hard to master - just some things to adjust to and it's another PFS game. I know where to go when I have questions, though, thanks again for the support!

I actually just finished GMing two tables run of Core Godsmouth. Just be prepared for a long game and a very grindy dungeon.

Also, if you would like a Google Drawings map, I could provide you with the one I used where I very selectively covered things up. Just PM me, or if you have any questions too. :)

The advantage of slideshows is that players can move their minis on mobile formats. As a person who does everything in iPad, I can move in slides but not drawings.

I have Godsmouth, and could be talked into helping you put together your first slide show. I've gotten pretty good at it. I found a guide for extracting images once... It had issues so I was thinking of redoing it.

Actually, speaking of this, one of my upcoming tasks is consolidating all the guides and information for PbP into one place. So we need nuts and bolts stuff in this guide... What else?

I like draw as it plays more nicely with zoom.

VC - Sydney, Australia

I used Google Draw for a while and found it quite good - and in some ways (ie zoom) its better than Google Slides, however Slides works better with mobile devices so it was worth the trade off in order to maximise access.

I remember the bad old days when GM's (myself included) were having to literally put map screenshot images up on Photobucket and give the party links to the current map.

That sucked so hard.

Question: I've read that in PFS there are ways to reach level 20, but are there any games that take place at level 20? I.e. will a PFS bard ever be able to actually use Deadly Performance?

Seems kind of disappointing to tell a character "congratulations, here's this awesome capstone ability, now goodbye forever."

VC - Sydney, Australia

I don't get Capstones.

I don't recall seeing a character in play past about level 14, and in PFS you wont get to see it in use, your ceiling is really about 12-13.

At the moment, the only way to 20 is Race for the Runecarved Key. At level 20, you retire to your private island to train up the next generation of Pathfinders. There is seeeker content -- modules and APs -- that will take you to 19.2. Hard to find that high tier stuff without lots of planning. The highest I have GMed for is level 14. That was crazy, but fun!

I am not saying that you cannot use Google drawings. If no one is on mobile, it is pretty good. But there are lots of players on mobile these days. Slides are less of a hassle with mobile players (and GMs).

Hmm

If you do use Draw and have players who are frequently on mobile, just be prepared for them to be able to see it and then ask the GM or other players to move their tokens.

Modules can take you to 19-19.2. From there you can play Race for the RuneCarved Key once... and you can actually do it at 20 if you use the Extended Travels con boon after reaching 19 and before Race. So the max is now Level 21 (20.2 then Race).

Sadly, my -1 played Race at level 7, so will be stuck at 19.2. oh well. GM 19th level Race in February will be fun regardless.

And yea... DnD has always broken down in the 12-16 level range.. Epic is always nigh impossible to balance challenge and success.
