Hopefully you were in the ER because you're a doctor or a nurse, but if not, I hope everything is ok.

My girlfriend has been having abdominal pain since February for which they cannot find the reason, and we were there for that and she was having shortness of breath and chest pain as well.

Still cannot figure out the pain, but turns out she also had a relatively minor pneumonia.

We were there until 1AM.

"I will always strive to write better" , 25 years gaming, 20 yrs DM

id ask about a hernia. my mom had something similar, bad abdominal pains, but she thought it was a heart attack. apparently you can get a hernia where your stomach links up to your esophagus, and can squeeze up through the hole in the diaphragm membrane.

Male Human (Midlander) Wolfbrother 9/Blademaster 2; Init +4; Senses: Low-Light Vision, Scent, Sense Emotion, Perception +15; AC 23 (+2 Dex., +11 Def. bonus); HP 129/129; Fort +13; Ref +8; Will +11

She and I are both pretty convinced that the pains are from adhesions, scar tissue that forms connections where no connection should be, from her gall bladder and appendix removals.

But the only way to confirm an adhesion is through surgery, so there are a ton of hoops to jump through to eliminate any other cause.

"I will always strive to write better" , 25 years gaming, 20 yrs DM

faster way would be to have the girlfriend just stab herself in that area. would necessitate a trip to the ER OR and skip all the hoops
cant charge you with domestic abuse because she did it herself, and she could write a note stating how and why, so she'd avoid a trip to the mental health ward.

Interesting problem solving suggestion. Being someone who works in a hospital though, and in Mental Health besides, I don't think I would recommend that...

so what your saying is that you might recommend it

Under the right circumstances, perhaps. Such as to a person I really really really disliked, and decided that it was worth the compromise to my ethics and even my sheer basic humanity for the simple aim of causing them ill, then sure, ya.

"I will always strive to write better" , 25 years gaming, 20 yrs DM

so if you disliked the person, you have no problem letting them cause themselves harm so that they can more easily get the main issue, the pain in the abdomen, looked at and fixed? whereas if you like the person, youd not like the idea and would rather see them suffer as they went through the hoops to get the surgery, thus prolonging the agony?

Speaking as a police officer, if I was called to the ER for a self inflicted stab wound that was committed for the sole purpose of being seen there would be 2 options. 1, person goes willingly to be evaluated for mental health issues, or 2 I do what is called an EPOW, Emergency Peace Officer Warrant, and take them to be evaluated.

What he said.

Unfortunately, there are not a lot of shortcuts available when it comes to doing things in the proper order. If someone took such drastic measures, it would probably only have the effect of bringing down a whole new world of questions, assessments, evaluations, and potential mental certification, that it would likely end up taking longer to deal with the issues than if they'd just done as suggested and gotten the required tests and screenings in order.

(Not to mention that if you are in the US (and I'm not American so I could have details wrong, but this is my impression) is that if you are certified to a mental health unit for evaluation, you have no legal right to leave (though you can contest your certification through legal channels), but regardless of the fact that you are there involuntarily, you are still on the hook for the entire bill for your psychiatric stay, which may have taken weeks or months to resolve. At the hospital I work at in Canada, we generally assume it costs about $1500-2500 a day to keep a patient locked on a psychiatric unit. Even if this was here and the Government would foot the bill (which they would - I love Canada), being stuck on a psych ward for weeks is a major disruption to your life, and can be traumatic in its own way. Add a $75000 bill to the aftermath of your involuntary 6-week stay, and the experience gets even less pleasant.)

Even if you have insurance, what is your provider going to say about the fact that the entire stay was precipitated by a self-inflicted wound?

So, unless I disliked a person enough to help them mess up their entire life and reap the fallout for years and decades after the incident, no, I would not recommend such an action.

Edit: Add on to all these considerations that inflicting the wound is not even a guarantee that the problem will be looked at, or that it will be solved. Abdominal issues and pains are notoriously hard to define and diagnose, meaning that even if they do poke around while stitching up the wound, there is a very significant chance that they would not actually even see anything that would help to diagnose the original issue. Add to that that you would have to consider the risk of accidental serious injury or complication. The abdomen is chalk full of blood vessels, and injury to any point on the GI tract (which do not forget is a linear system) means that any point inferior to the point of injury will be affected by that injury, whether or not any of those portions have damage of their own to content with. In the chest, things get even worse as the blood vessels are that much closer together. And anytime you cause injury, you also run the risk of infection or complication... yada yada yada.

I know you said the initial comment in jest, but just to be clear, it is a really really really bad idea.

"I will always strive to write better" , 25 years gaming, 20 yrs DM

oh yes, there is that whole "save you from yourself" situation i hadnt considered, as ryland pointed out. which, i have to admit, is rather pesky. why would you be called to an er for a self inflicted stab wound? just to verify that it was just that and not person on person attack?

Unfortunately, I've never been to Texas, so I'm only familiar with the state from its internet presence; impressions that are notoriously accurate, and never distorted or selective in presentation. Therefore, I'm pretty sure the entire state is populated with gun-totting, football obsessed, chili cookoff/bbq competition going republicans, and that there are more fully automatic weapons than there are people. Looks like a fun place to visit, actually.

Yup. That pretty much is an accurate depiction. Except we also all ride horses and live on ranches.

I am back from honeymooning, everyone! I haven't read the thread yet, as there are 61 new posts at the time of this post, so I'm going to catch up now. Who knows, Dengorin might even already be dead?

Male Human Cleric (cardinal) 3 | Councilor

Okay, finally caught up. I believe Dengorin is dead, as he currently has a Con score of 1 and his HP is at -6. However, if he gets his full normal Con score for negative hit points, I'll happily attempt to stabilize him. Just let me know.

Well, as of right now there is no known weave that heals ability damage...perhaps experimentation is in order?

I'll try to stabilize. Since there's no weave, I may have a long recovery ahead of me.

It was a strong temptation, and I almost had him do that without thinking about it too much, but the more I thought about it, the less it fit. Rhoekk is practically fearless, but he is also quite calculating. He is extremely wrapped up in his duty, and that makes him more of a "Big Picture" thinker, and in the big picture, he could not afford to run off and risk capture or death right now, just because it is what he wanted to do. It would be what he wanted to do, but he felt unable to act on that desire due to larger concerns at hand.

One of my players has just stepped away due to a new arrival in the family, limiting his amount of time for pbp.

So with him leaving, i have a slot open for a new person to come in and play.

I will post more info about character creation and background of the storyline and location of campaign, although you can learn alot by reading the first posting in the gameplay thread, will post more info at my lunch break in 2 hours.

and a bump to bring attention to this...

I'd need character creation information, if I were to join?

EDIT: I am interested, of course. But I'll have to read up on the gameplay thread and such like.

of course...time got away from me

PC build: 25 point buy

anything from the netbook under the dragons banner is allowed.

The group of characters is from the current reality that takes place within the books. But, they are in an alternate universe where the Rand Al'Thor was not rescued at the of Dumai Wells. Now he resides within the white tower. The group is within Salidar for the purpose to act as liasons between the Black tower and the rebels, but things have gone awry since they arrived. The delegation from the black tower was attacked and only one has survived so far, the Whitecloaks are moving to attack Salidar from the north, and news of the Seanchan moving in from the south has just been revealed by the Amrylin.

also, the wolflord PRC has been removed. in its place are feats found within UtDB.

Here's a bare-bones wanderer / thief taker, if you're still looking for someone! I'm thinking he's a part of the eyes-and-ear network - maybe the yellow since Jasmine is yellow and from this world. I'll flesh out more as I'm able, been a busy week. Oh and this is fia.

Just wanted to drop a note here in case you're ever looking for new players. I'd love to play in a WoT game.

So, when you say "The Dragon Reborn", how literal do you want that to be...

...because I have a kobold oracle of flame who actually believes he is a reincarnated dragon that would fit that perfectly, if wanted.

as interesting as it would be to have a kobold in a wheel of time campaign, i think my players would revolt if i allowed it.
But thanks for the offer Fal.

No worries. He'll find a dominion somewhere. :P

just so everyone knows, this is a wheel of time campaign, not a pathfinder.

Ha. Looks like my comment bumped your thread on the Recruitment board, Rizzenmagnus. Sorry.

FWIW, I have the WoTRPG book but haven't read the netbook you referred to in your character creation guidelines.

Looking to fill a recently vacant slot in my Wheel of Time group.
If you are a fan of the series, then you may want to look into joining this group.

The group has a wide variety of classes, from aes sedia to Aiel, to an Ashaman and an Ogier blademaster from Seanchan.

Perhaps you have always wanted to play a Tuatha'an? or a wolf brother, or perhaps an Aiel that can channel? Or even a Darkfriend?

The group has just discovered an ancient ter'angreal that is a house, and within it a room that allows them to go anywhere, so long as they have physically visited the location before...

shameless bump

I'm quite interested, but would need to do a good bit of reading to build a high level character.

I used to have a pdf of the rulebook. Let me have a couple days and I'll get something up here.

ok.

Another bump

Apologies for going AWOL. I couldn't find my copy of the rules, nor an easily downloaded replacement. I read a few things I had, as well as skimming Under the Dragon's Banner. I really can't commit the time to making a suitable entry at this point. Good gaming!

What's funny is I found this thread as I took a break from reading Lord of Chaos.

I have the WoT RPG book, and I used to have the Under the Dragon's Banner netbook, although I'll have to redownload it.

I'm not 100% sure I have time for another PbP, but I am interested. I'd like to read some of your gameplay thread, as well as learn more about your game. A question:

When you say 25 point buy, do you mean the Pathfinder version or the one in the WoT rule book?

Second, can you tell me more about your campaign?

pathfinder version.

more about the campaign...hmmmmmm...

currently the setting is in the midst of book 7, a crown of swords. but the difference is that the majority of the group were taken from the main realm into a mirror world through a portal stone by a black Ajah. actually, the party was split and sent to two different mirror realms. one realm actually had Saidar tainted, and the aes sedai were all men. A combination of aes sedai and Whitecloaks. the other group was ported into a realm where the battle of dumai wells was a failure. the Asha'man didnt arrive in time, and the aiel were victorious, to an extent. they failed to capture the dragon reborn. he now resides within the white tower walls. the Shaido aiel have taken Cairhein and are moving south and east.
The group was just in the mountains, in a ter'angreal travellers house from the age of legends. within this house they discovered a room that allows them to travel to anywhere they have been in their past, so long as the location hasnt changed as much. while testing it out, the group has wondered into a trolloc encampment 100 miles south of the blight border. the blight has begun to build up within the area.
at this time, they are being attacked by a group of trollocs...

Okay. I read the first couple pages of gameplay, and it felt like the characters had an established backstory as a group.

I'll post up a character for perusal today or tomorrow. Would I be from the mirror world or from the world they are currently in? Just so I know for backstory purposes.

Yes, there are two other threads that date back to 2011 That establishes this group.

You would be from the mirror world.

Also, feel free to make whatevet you feel like, dont think you have to make a pc to fill a nitch. If you want to play a fallen aiel that has taken to the sword instead of spear, be my guest.

Backstory:

Dengorin Kaltaneos was born second son to a minor noble family in the nation of Illian. Though not as wealthy as other families, they still had sufficient coin that he had a comfortable childhood, and he was given a noble’s education, including the sword and the Old Tongue. His family primarily lived in the city, and so he was exposed to the sights and sounds of a major port city. His weapons trainer, an Ebou Dari, taught him the basics of the sword and the path of the blademaster, though he himself was not one.

Upon his 21st birthday, the Great Hunt was called. Seeking adventure and excitement, Dengorin went to the Square of Tammuz and took the Hunter’s Oath, and set forth to find the Horn of Valere. He believed that the Horn was somewhere on Almoth Plain, and so journeyed there with a small retinue to seek it. While there, Almoth Plain exploded into chaos with the advent of the Dragon Reborn. Clashing with small bands of Dragonsworn, he lost a couple of his companions before fleeing to Ghealdan for the winter. Ghealdan, once part of storied Manetheren, might surely hold the Horn of Valere. He set to seeking the Horn, and then the Prophet came and preached of the coming of the Dragon Reborn. The turmoil caused by the Prophet’s mobs caused him to lose more of his companions before making his way to Altara.

Dengorin seemed to be followed by chaos. He decided the horn could not be in the South, and so travelled to the Borderlands, to seek the Horn there. He and his companions clashed with Trollocs several times, and one by on each of his remaining companions has fallen. Now, there is only him, and he begins to wonder if he should return to Illian, where surely he will be safer, although he has failed to find the Horn.

Appearance and Personality:

Dengorin is a young Illianer in his early-mid 20’s, with brown eyes and brown hair and beard which leaves his upper lip bare. He is well-dressed, if not always in the most expensive clothes, and slightly above average in height and weight. His once jovial personality has hardened somewhat in light of the troubles he has faced, and he no longer believes Shadowspawn a myth. He has a healthy respect for Aes Sedai due to not understanding their strange power, and believes Rand al’Thor to be the true Dragon Reborn. He isn’t quite sure how the Prophecies will be fulfilled if the Dragon is in the White Tower, but he’s sure Aes Sedai have thought of that.

reference the level noble and compare to level in bard for what you are eligible to take

Noble: (Dragon Reborn #1039) The resources from the UTDB will take affect over the "call in a favor" shown in the wotrpg book.

noble knowledge: as like bardic knowledge, nobles have greater access to books, and may have read a plethora of topics to help them learn to be better, or worse, nobles. THis allows nobles to make all knowledge checks untrained, and can add 1/2 his/her noble level to said checks.

Inspire Confidence: as per the bard rule but with a minor tweak. The increase in bonus applied to those listening will be +1 every 5 levels. so at level 15, the noble can apply a +4 unnamed bonus to those listening. this effect lasts as long as the noble speaks, but should he stop speaking, the effects will last the noble level+charisma modifer in rounds. The noble cannot use inspire confidence and instill fear within the same combat.

Instill fear and doubt: the reverse of the bard rule. the noble has the ability to demand attention to himself, even in the heart of combat. with this attention, he is able to cast doubt upon his opponents, making them second guess their cause. perhaps he points out the infallacy of it all, perhaps he offers money. either way, his speech saps the will of those he and his army is fighting. this ability affects up to 2x the nobles HD in creatures if they are 4HD or more less than him, if less than 3hd or up to 3HD more he affects his HD in creatures. If 4HD or more above his HD, he affects 1/2 his HD in creatures. all creatures listening are allowed a Will save DC= to noble level plus charisma modifier plus 10. The noble cannot use instill fear and instill courage in the same combat.

inspire greatness: as per the bard special ability

inspire competance: as per the bard special ability.

of special note, sword forms are a skill that anyone can learn, so long as they have proficency with a sword blade.
info can be found here: sword form skill info
you can apply up to your level in sword form skill points.

Don't forget Blade Forms, now. ;)

Okay.

Is this still using the 3.0 Skill points or Pathfinder skill points.

Use pathfinder rules for skills. i.e. max rank = your level. Class skills give a +3 bonus.

Thank you. Much appreciated.

EDIT: Pathfinder feat progression, too?

Yup. Using pathfinder versions of feats where they duplicate. For example(s), use Pathfinder's dodge, power attack, combat expertise, etc feats rather than WoT's dodge feat.

Any change to the Armsman's Bonus feat progression?

As pathfinder's fighter I believe.

Very good. This should be right, then. Rizzen, feel free to take a look.

i like it, dengorin. looks good. feel free to say hi in the discussion posting.

Had some people drop out of the group, so i have an opening or two.

Setting: Robert Jordan's wheel of Time.
Ruleset: cross between the WOTRPG book and Pathfinder.
Character creation: 25 pt buy
11th level characters.
equipment: basic mundane items are available, but magical items are incredibly rare. You will start off with a +1 ter'angreal of sorts, but anything more than that is rolled for or found.

Plot point: This is a mirror realm. The battle at Dumai Wells was an utter disaster for rescuing the Dragon Reborn. He is held captive at the WHite Tower by Eladia. for the PCs, two of their own have gone after a third that went crazy and were seperated from the main party. The main party is attempting to rescue their companions AND free the Dragon.
Right now, a Deathwatch Ogier is rampaging through the White Tower killing all who are Aes Sedai. The group has just found him, but part of the group is splitting off to rescue a trapped companion who just gave birth, and another group is moving up to find the Amyrlin, who is key to releasing the Dragon.

I'm back on the boards Rizzen! Would you be amenable to me rejoining?

Alright, so, always wanted to be in a WoTRPG. Let me dig up my book, but is there something that the group stands in need of? Got enough channelers? Need an agility based character or a frontline fighter? Anything that the party members absolutely will not tolerate?

Well, let's see. We currently have the following characters that appear to be active:

From the world of the books:
Ebou Dari wilder
Aiel Wilder / Wise One Apprentice
Borderlander Wolfbrother
Midlander Wolfbrother / blademaster
Borderlander Armsman/woodsman/blademaster
Aiel Algai / Aethen'Dor

From the mirror world:
Aes Sedai (and npc warder)
Andoran Asha'man / armsman
Ogier Deathwatch guard
Borderlander (I think?) noble / armsman.

Also, hi Jasmine!

Hi Fiallain! Good to see you! :-)

welcome Josh.

Feel free to make whatever you want to make. I dont adhere to the "we need these 4 classes to make a proper party" method commonly found in dnd/pathfinder. instead players make whatever they feel like and then they go on an adventure. It is, from my POV, more realistic in a sense.
I attempt to offer a balance of RP and combat, and encourage players to utilize skills in ways not commonly thought out.
I push the envelope with RP, from cute and cuddly to GRRMartin having sex with the movie "human centipede" and this is the result. see vampric shadowspawn that looks like a cross between slime and spaghetti
I also strive to make the PCs think, and push their preconceived philosophical boundries.introducing a PC that was a seanchan noble sul'dam. lots of drama there, still unresolved

but, most importantly, i just want you to have fun.

as for setting wise, yes we are in a mirror world. It is currently book 7, at least from the PCs POV.

oh, and Jasmine, welcome back!
After i introduce you, feel free to jump in again.

Thanks so much Rizzen!
