Backstory:
Dengorin was the third son of a minor noble in the Kingdom of Beral. Because of his position in the house, his father committed him to the clergy of Abadar, and so his schooling came within the church. He was educated in the function and history of the church - as well as an unofficial education in politics. Dengorin determined that in order to gain the power his oldest brother would have as a noble, he needed to become the head of the Church of Abadar. He was ordained and sent to a church at a trading hub city. Unfortunately, the trade routes came to be plagued by bandits, and Dengorin saw an opportunity. He organized a small group of warriors dedicated to the Father of Vaults, and had word spread about of an offer. If a merchants goods were stolen, they could come to the Church of Abadar and file a claim, including the necessary paperwork, and the Church would try to retrieve the goods in exchange for a small percentage to the Church. The Church could then sell its percentage of the goods for profit, and if they recovered goods that no one had filed a claim for, the Church could claim those goods for itself and sell all of them for profit. Despite Dengorin’s overall lack of combat ability, his organization and leadership were vital to organizing the group and providing the blessing of Abadar to ensure their success.
Eventually, word filtered through the church of the opening of a new Bishopric, answerable to the archbishop of the capital. Dengorin’s success in making a profit for the Church made him a front-runner. He saw the opportunity to move closer to his goal of being head of the church. When he was called to the capital, he knew he had taken his first step to prominence and status.
The head of the Church of Abadar was older, but his mind was sharp. He had seen in Dengorin a budding political rival, one who would stop at nothing to claim the seat of power. When King Rubar had asked about Dengorin, having heard the reputation of the lesser clergyman, the High Priest saw his opportunity, and ensured that he spoke highly enough of Dengorin that King Rubar would choose him for the expedition. The High Priest anointed him Bishop, then informed him his Bishopric was going to be a 4-month ocean crossing away. Effectively, it was an exile of Dengorin, wrapped in reward. The only solace Dengorin had was that, since the King had asked for him by name, Dengorin would be in a position of power in the new colony. He would be able to use this colony posting as leverage to claim greater power in the church. This momentary setback meant nothing. He would eventually claim his position as High Priest of Abadar. Time was on his side.
