The Start of Something Good: Announcing Errata Cycles

Friday, May 17, 2024

Welcome! We’re a week out from PaizoCon and you’ve got a whole slate of reveals for new stuff to look forward to: Pathfinder Player Core 2,Pathfinder War of Immortals, Pathfinder Howl of the Wild, the list goes on! But some of you might be looking back thinking, “Sure all this new stuff is great, but I’d really love some updates and clarifications for some of these books I bought right before the remaster started.”

Well, good news! We’ve got a slate of errata for you. Right about now, you should find some new entries over at https://paizo.com/pathfinder/faq for Pathfinder Guns & Gears, Pathfinder Rage of Elements, Pathfinder Lost Omens Firebrands, and Pathfinder Lost Omens Ancestry Guide. I’ll let you read those entries to see the specifics, but some highlights include a broad update in the Ancestry Guide entry for re-standardizing the flight feats of certain ancestries like sprites and strix to bring them more in line with the new standard we’ve set for ancestries with inherent flight following the Remaster. We’ve also got a swath of minor updates to combination weapons to align with the new standard set by the swap function of the Interact action in the Remaster, and some much requested clarifications for Rage of Elements.

Ezren with the magic grimoire

This also marks the beginning of a return to normalcy for us following the flurry of activity around the OGL events of last year and the need for us to pivot to the Remaster project and the introduction of the ORC license. With all of that in the rearview mirror and a clear road leading into a bright blue horizon ahead, we’re looking to get back on track for the annual errata cycle we had announced right before those plans got altered. As part of this pivot, we want to set some clear expectations for what the future we’re working toward is going to look like for FAQs and errata.

  • Hardcover Rulebooks: This includes books like Player Core, Guns & Gears, Rage of Elements, etc. Our goal for this product line is for it to receive two errata and FAQ cycles per year on an as-needed basis, one in the spring/summer and one in the fall/winter. This current drop is the spring/summer cycle, so you can expect one more errata update before the end of the year!
  • Lost Omens Books: This line of books will receive one errata and FAQ update cycle per year on an as-needed basis, coinciding with one of the two hardcover rulebook cycles.
  • Adventures: Our Adventure Path line is a monthly periodical and the player content produced in it is intended for use with the associated adventures. The standard for player content presented in adventures is that it is of uncommon or rare rarity and directly tied to the story it is presented with; using this content outside of the associated adventure inherently requires GM review and approval (or appropriate sanctioning for use in Pathfinder Society organized play). We do not currently have any plans at this time to include adventure content in a scheduled errata cycle. We may still do errata around particular reprints, such as when compiling an adventure for a hardcover release.

So, that’s our roadmap for the errata and FAQs going forward! If you’re planning on playing some Pathfinder Society games at PaizoCon, make sure to check for any updates your character might have received!

Catch you next time!

Thank you, regular errata are very appreciated particularly for those of us with at least one leg in the org play sphere.
EDIT: Might it be possible to add something like a "last updated on [date]" entry to each errata section, to make it easier for GMs and players to check if there are recent errata?

Actually going back and fixing older content so it's not errata'd or powercrept out of existence is a huge win! Thank you so much for fitting it into the schedule, gang. Gonna roll up a strix Triggerbrand to celebrate.

Yessss. I know you have all been working super hard lately pumping out content, so thank you for managing to get this done. Especially happy about some of the kineticist errata! Stance being taken out of rebirth in living stone is awesome (and what I assumed was supposed to happen!), the scaling on conductive sphere is unexpected and awesome, and we have ranges and areas on all impulses!

My one and only (unrealistic probably) hope left is to get a faq that tremor can be used even on aerial enemies (actually everything in a 10ft burst) and not only on grounded enemies, especially is the damage is confirmed to be d8 scaling and not d10. Even then it's not a big deal (maybe the intention is for enemies to be on solid earth) but again that's just my hope.

So much for the Kingmaker Errata, which definitely needs one pass because of the included systems.

Lots of welcome changes here.

It does feel odd to see combination weapons get all that love, and Inventor's Dual-Form Weapon feat continues to be incredibly bad by comparison. (Also, as written it arguably says you can't benefit from runes on the second form at all, since the two forms are a single item). Chiefly, two actions to change between forms is just crippling.

Hooray, we finally know the area of effect for Roiling Mudslide.

Wait did Rogue Resilient not get errata'd!?

Happy to see this!

Tell me I am missing Rogue Resilient errata please someone...

The Rogue Saving Throw adjustments in the remaster have not been changed, treat it as intentional until further notice I guess.

Isn't it weird they touched Aggressive Block but not the Rogue Saving Throw adjustments? I am starting to believe I am slowly gas lighting myself into believing it is intentional. A couple of people said it was suppose to be errata'd said by the creators/some of the team but when i asked them for any links they couldn't turn up any.

The only thing that kinda annoys me is that it's difficult to read these as a changelog with the new and old errata being smashed into one entry since we've moved away from printing-based errata for the newer rounds. I think it'd be helpful if maybe there was some dating or something so that a person only interesting in seeing the most recent changes from last time could distinguish them easily.

This is excellent to see, thank you so much!

God I'm so happy they clarified you can use old Aasimar/Tiefling content with Nephilim. I had to pass several IRL Diplomacy checks to make my Idyllkin after the remaster and I feel so vindicated right now.

I've never seen anything from the team acknowledging it, so I think they may have manifested that out of the conversation surrounding it rather than the designers having said anything, but at this point, I think we have to take for granted it was deliberate.

But damn, there are some fantastic errata in here, combination weapons are now even better than before and I already liked them. Spellshot and Bullet Dancer both got a glow up, in Spellshot's case the extra damage on energy shot is appreciated, but it's mainly a utility bump, while I think Bullet Dancer is just much more usable.

The action cost on stretching reach is nice, I've actually been ruling that you can be in a stance as an exploration activity the way you can use a shield, so trading an exploration activity for the action cost should be useful for my players without breaking the game.

Honestly the GM should allow most things from Pre-Remastered because if you don't that's literal years of content erased in an instant. Pathfinder Society lets you so you should use that as your base. I would use the new spells/cantrips over the old ones though.

We use Foundry and the Foundry devs had decided not to port over the old Tiefling/Aasimar feats because they believed the devs wanted them gone. I felt like I was taking crazy pills trying to convince everyone the intent was for the old stuff to become Nephilim. He allowed it at the end though.

This is high on our list of desired functionality improvements but will likely need to wait until after the website updates are complete before we can start moving forward with implementation.

It seems that Tengu ancestry feats were not included in the flight rebalancing? Is that intentional?

The Errata is difficult to understand yes. It is out of order and doesn't have dates...

I imagine Tengu and Kobolds are going to get their changes in PC2.

I'm pretty sure Tengu are normally flightless, in-lore.

There are specific notes in Rage of Elements bringing the armor impulses' strength scores into Remaster, but I thought I noticed similar errors in a couple of the natural armor abilities in Howl of the Wild previews?

My highest level PFS character (lvl 8) is a Bullet Dancer, and I agree, this definitely makes the class better. I *do* wish we had also gotten access to Dual-Weapon Reload, but you can't have everything.

Not sure what the "Qi Spells" feat is that is replacing "Brawling Focus" -- maybe a PC2 Monk Feat we haven't seen yet?

But very happy here!

Didn't expect the QoL improvements to flying creatures. That's great!
Having access to Flight isn't as powerful as it used to be due to the action economy requirements, thus it's not that disrupting early on, specially in this restricted form. Good stuff.

Most are, but then again so are most Sprites. Skyborn heritage Tengu have a line of flight Ancestry feats. (Soaring Flight and Soaring Form.)

Do we know if they are going to address all ancestry flight feats? Such as the Sylph versatile heritage?

Fantastic. Hopefully we can also get some simplification or explanation on some things like polymorph and Untamed form interactions.

Is it intentional that Automatons (who are in Guns and Gears) didn't get their flight errataed to match the level changes to the other ancestries with flight?

Will this errata show up in PDFs or new print runs of physical books?

When a new printing is executed, the current errata for that book will propogate to the PDFs and new printings.

So... things I notice...
- Kineticist elemental familiar can be applied to any familiar... which means that a Witch who gets it via archetype can get the value of that summon twice per day? Huh. As "silly familiar-sacrificing tricks for the witch" go, that one's not bad.

- Being able to stack Rebirth in Living Stone and Assume Earth's Mantle is welcome. Indeed, a lot of these changes/fixes/errata for Rage of Elements are welcome... even if I might have preferred that Molten Wires not get the attack trait. Ah, well. I suppose I can't claim that it comes as a surprise.

- Some of the more egregious Firebrands stuff bot nerfed. Good.

In general... this is really nice to see. It's also around about the time that I'd hoped to see it, so that's cool. Thumbs up to Paizo. Keep up the good work.

I'm baffled that Secrets of Magic somehow didn't get errata again. Is there some problem that prevents that book from getting errata? Like, Inner Radiance Torrent scaling was admitted wrong by Paizo almost immediately after the book shipped and was made limited in PFS "until it gets an errata." That was YEARS ago. There's lots of other stuff in this book needing it too, and even the most obvious one (Arcane Cascade) took forever to finally happen and got bundled into the Remaster changes.

What's up with that?

I been wondering that also, I know Gods & Magic is getting a Remastered edition maybe they are planning in 1 week at Paizo con to announce Secret of Magic Remastered? Maybe the Secrets of Magic will be rolled into Divine Mysteries (The Gods & Magic Remastered book)

Hurray for returns to normalcy!

Hey, just reporting that in the additional feats for Way of the Spellshot, Gunslingers don't get access to the Master Wizard Spellcasting feat. Not sure if this is an error or a deliberate choice.

Also, Rain of Rust is still lacking a duration in the feat's description. Otherwise, I am LOVING these changes. I cannot wait to see more this coming fall/winter!

EDIT: Winter Sleet's issues are still there, as well! Just as a FYI!

I was tentatively waiting on a second printing of the Player Core before buying a hardcover. (It's kind of hard to find info on what printing is "current" in the physical releases.)

Do you have any hints of when you might get to a second printing?

Love the buffs to combination weapons! I'm really hoping we soon get a Lightning Swap-style feat for them, especially since they're now meant to be more in line with Swap.

Also, I'd love to know why permanent flight was lowered all the way from 17th level to 9th level. I hadn't heard anything about that.

Yeah, I'd like to know that too - same for the Nephilim. Is it that versatile heritages get it a bit later?

Awakened animals have access to them at 9th level, so they got rebalanced. IMHO it's a powercreep of sorts albeit minor

RIP the Elemental Instinct barbarian granting kineticist impulses the rage trait.

Which means if a main class kineticist took Barbarian Dedication w/ elemental instinct and then took Instinct Ability at level 6, they'd lose access to virtually of of their kineticist powers outside of rage.

I wish the last line of Elemental Rage were changed to "If you have any kineticist impulses with the same element type as the one you chose for your instinct, such as ones gained by taking the Kineticist Dedication multiclass feat, they gain the rage trait while your are raging."
