In the long, long ago, we announced changes to our errata process. In the Changes to the Way We Make Changes blog, we announced we would be issuing errata twice per year, once in spring and once in fall. And we fully intended to do so!

Then the Remaster happened instead.

That workload was fast and furious, and didn’t really leave time for other tasks like finding errata, vetting the changes, and producing the public pages for them. Even after the books, we were catching up with projects that had their schedules thrown into disarray, and could release some Remaster compatibility errata only when the first of the core books came out, over a year ago.

This blog marks us returning to the intended schedule of two updates per year.

Today’s Updates

The new errata and clarifications are up now on the FAQ page, identified with “Fall 2024” and the printing of the book they apply to. For example, “Player Core Errata (Fall 2024, 1st Printing).” This set includes a pretty extensive set of updates to make the initial Remaster books as accurate as possible. Future sets of updates likely won’t be this lengthy. Also, because we previously put out errata when a book was being reprinted, we typically had the final wording on hand. In this new system, the challenges of text layout make it possible that some of these updates might not match the exact final text when we reprint a book. We could have to revise them later, keeping the same mechanical changes but adjusting the wording a bit.

So what books are we covering?

Pathfinder Player Core has been out long enough for people to have found a lot of minor errors, which make up the bulk of these updates. We covered some fixes that veteran players familiar with the legacy books could likely figure out, but that new players would lack the context for, such as stray mentions of “ability modifiers.” Several feats got improvements to be more appealing for the characters they’re meant for.

One of the notable changes you’ll see is an update to the sure strike spell. The spell could be very strong, with the reroll effectively making a much larger bonus than most abilities can grant. This benefit was usually in control at low levels when characters had few spell slots, but it could become disruptive and repetitive at higher levels on characters built to gain a huge number of copies of the spell and use it constantly. We’ve added temporary immunity to the spell, with the intent that it can still be very strong to create intense moments, but that there’s little incentive to use more than a handful of spell slots on it.

Pathfinder GM Core had some minor changes, mostly to cover side effects of the Remaster process and the introduction of reinforcing runes being missed in a couple places.

Pathfinder Monster Core had a variety of small changes. The one that affects the most creatures is fixing the scaling on the demonic pact and diabolic pact rituals.

Pathfinder Player Core 2 saw a few changes, including changing the incorrect action symbol on You’re Next to a reaction, giving the champion multiclass dedication the champion’s aura ability, and fixing the damage on live wire.

Pathfinder Secrets of Magic already received updates for Remaster compatibility, but we’ve added some more updates. The main one is to allow the magus to use spells that don’t require spell attacks. This made part of the Expanded Spellstrike feat obsolete, but that feat can still be taken by players who want to affect areas. Studious spells were missed in the previous pass, and are now updated.

Other changes to Secrets of Magic include several fixes to individual rules elements and repeating the elemental themed changes and expansions that were detailed in Pathfinder Rage of Elements, making them easier to find for people who don’t have that book.

In addition, we’ve put out our lost album! That’s to say, the long-absent Secrets of Magic 1st printing to 2nd printing errata is now on the FAQ page as well.

For Pathfinder Howl of the Wild, we’ve updated a few levels and prices for some of the beast armaments so they are more in line with their runes. We’ve made a few targeted changes as well—gone are the days of the minotaur rogue also scaring all their teammates with Alarming Disappearance, which no longer affects allies who have spent significant time with you.

For Pathfinder Lost Omens Tian Xia Character Guide, a few pieces of missing information were added, namely the Speed entries for the sarangay and yaksha ancestries, which are both 25 feet.

Pathfinder War of Immortals got the few changes that were previewed in the Alternate Mythic Rules document added to the FAQ page.

We hope these changes will make your games play more smoothly and clear up a few points of confusion! We’ll be keeping an eye out for other potential errata that come up between now and spring.

Greetings Starfinders! While everyone is excited about the future of Starfinder, including the exciting continuation of the Year of Era’s End, our Mechageddon! Campaigns, and the Starfinder Second Edition Playtest, we have some last minute housekeeping in the archives that includes a pre-GenCon round of Starfinder FAQ and Errata!

We have a plethora of little changes that'll make your games run more smoothly than ever. These include but are not limited to:

• Clarification that you cannot use lethal grenades and missiles non-lethally by just taking the standard penalties.
• Many clarifications to Starfinder Enhanced, including narrative starship combat, the enhanced Solarian, explosive danger, concentrated cloud, and how living holograms stow items.
• Clarifications and changes to gear, including a 24-hour immunity clause added to timeskip crystals and attablossoms, clarification on the skipshot pistol, the radiation of abysium ammunition, degenerator weapons, robe of communalism, and if you don't like the new gear changes, the draining finisher gear boost and tech smasher archetype!
• Updates to Alien Archive, including the requirements to wield dragon glaives.
• Updates to magic, including the void whispers and grasping branch spell, junk armor spell, the school spirit spell, the hive mind connection, esotericist, and the expert artificer.

Most of these changes are minor housekeeping that shouldn't impact how most games are run but help ensure less variation across multiple tables and clarify the intent of our design. This should help make it easier for players transitioning from one group to another or who want to try out fun character options in organized play!

Welcome! We’re a week out from PaizoCon and you’ve got a whole slate of reveals for new stuff to look forward to: Pathfinder Player Core 2,Pathfinder War of Immortals, Pathfinder Howl of the Wild, the list goes on! But some of you might be looking back thinking, “Sure all this new stuff is great, but I’d really love some updates and clarifications for some of these books I bought right before the remaster started.”

Well, good news! We’ve got a slate of errata for you. Right about now, you should find some new entries over at https://paizo.com/pathfinder/faq for Pathfinder Guns & Gears, Pathfinder Rage of Elements, Pathfinder Lost Omens Firebrands, and Pathfinder Lost Omens Ancestry Guide. I’ll let you read those entries to see the specifics, but some highlights include a broad update in the Ancestry Guide entry for re-standardizing the flight feats of certain ancestries like sprites and strix to bring them more in line with the new standard we’ve set for ancestries with inherent flight following the Remaster. We’ve also got a swath of minor updates to combination weapons to align with the new standard set by the swap function of the Interact action in the Remaster, and some much requested clarifications for Rage of Elements.

This also marks the beginning of a return to normalcy for us following the flurry of activity around the OGL events of last year and the need for us to pivot to the Remaster project and the introduction of the ORC license. With all of that in the rearview mirror and a clear road leading into a bright blue horizon ahead, we’re looking to get back on track for the annual errata cycle we had announced right before those plans got altered. As part of this pivot, we want to set some clear expectations for what the future we’re working toward is going to look like for FAQs and errata.

• Hardcover Rulebooks: This includes books like Player Core, Guns & Gears, Rage of Elements, etc. Our goal for this product line is for it to receive two errata and FAQ cycles per year on an as-needed basis, one in the spring/summer and one in the fall/winter. This current drop is the spring/summer cycle, so you can expect one more errata update before the end of the year!
• Lost Omens Books: This line of books will receive one errata and FAQ update cycle per year on an as-needed basis, coinciding with one of the two hardcover rulebook cycles.
• Adventures: Our Adventure Path line is a monthly periodical and the player content produced in it is intended for use with the associated adventures. The standard for player content presented in adventures is that it is of uncommon or rare rarity and directly tied to the story it is presented with; using this content outside of the associated adventure inherently requires GM review and approval (or appropriate sanctioning for use in Pathfinder Society organized play). We do not currently have any plans at this time to include adventure content in a scheduled errata cycle. We may still do errata around particular reprints, such as when compiling an adventure for a hardcover release.

So, that’s our roadmap for the errata and FAQs going forward! If you’re planning on playing some Pathfinder Society games at PaizoCon, make sure to check for any updates your character might have received!

Greetings, Starfinders! I’m proud to announce substantial updates to the Starfinder Roleplaying Game posted to the Starfinder FAQ and Errata page! You can read the details of these errata in full by expanding the dropdown menus of each product, and you can further filter your results using the search bar at the top of the page.

Starfinder Enhanced takes center stage this go around. This includes clarifications on how the enhanced witchwarper can take advantage of their alternate class features, some significant boosts to biohacker snipers and medics, and fixes to the DC of some troublesome feats. We also updated the back-matter of a handful of Adventure Path volumes, including the starsinger archetype from Starfinder Adventure Path #47: Nightmare Scenario and the plane-touched species from Starfinder Adventure Path #46: The Perfect Storm. Almost every hardcover has some level of errata, but perhaps the biggest change involves some clarifications to the Starfinder Roleplaying Game system itself, including official clarification that you can now intentionally hit a willing ally without an attack roll, and an explanation of how characters with a 0 ft reach can engage in melee combat! There are many other changes and, as always, we welcome more questions, comments, and feedback on our Rules Questions forums. And feel free to discuss this errata right here on this blog post!

We recently updated our Starfinder FAQ and Errata with a slew of new entries! You can see all these errata entries by expanding their dropdown, and they’re also fully searchable using the search bar at the top of the page.

These updates include some necessary errata for Starfinder Interstellar Species, including updated rules for Devastating Throw and Draconic Shot. Game Masters will want to read the new rules on the crush special ability from Alien Archive. And a bunch of gear has been changed to bring it in line with our other options, including thasphalt firearms, xenolash whips being a bit less oppressive in play, and a clarification that caustoject weapons can inject biohacks!

There’s also a major change to how weapon fusions work, changing the previous 24-hour cycle time on swapping these out to only 10 minutes. The team discussed it, and we realized that these were inhibiting the use of fusion seals in most games and especially in Organized Play, so we’ve adjusted these rules to be far more accommodating.

Welcome to 2023 everyone! With the Second Edition of Pathfinder now in its third year, the folks on the rules team are really thrilled to see how all of you are engaging with the game and telling thrilling stories of adventure with friends and family. Behind the scenes, we’re continuing to make the game as good as it possibly can be by creating brand new content and going back to make sure that our existing books are working the way we intended.

That means errata, and today we’re happy to announce several exciting changes to the Pathfinder Core Rulebook that make the game a little easier to play and bring certain aspects of it more in line with our current thoughts and sensibilities. But before I toss the blog over to Lead Designer Logan Bonner to walk you through some of the highlights, I want to take a moment to talk about some upcoming changes to the errata process itself!

In the past, our errata process has been tied to when we reprint books, so that you could make sure your print edition matched what was currently on store shelves. While this had its advantages, it often meant that changes were made quite infrequently. In addition, if a book didn’t see a reprint, it might mean that we never went in to apply a patch. The result was a process that just was not living up to our needs and desire to make sure you have a great game experience. So, we are changing the process.

Starting this year, we will release errata twice per year, once in the spring and once in the fall. Since errata will no longer be tied to reprints, it frees us up to cover errata issues from a wide range of products as well. We hope this will allow us to be a bit more responsive to your questions and any issues you might have spotted with the game, so keep posting your questions to Paizo.com. Your passion helps us make a better Pathfinder!

Alright, that’s enough process talk from me. I’m going to toss it over to Logan to take a look at some of the changes made to the Pathfinder Core Rulebook!

Core Rulebook Errata

Thanks, Jason! You might notice that Jason said spring and fall, and it’s not... either of those. This batch of errata is coming to coincide with the new fourth printing of the Core Rulebook. While typically any such errata will have already been covered under the new process, this one is playing catch-up. You’ll find all the errata on the FAQ page, but I want to give context and explanations for a few of the major changes.

First comes the most expansive change: alternate ancestry boosts. We’re implementing the option for you to choose two free ability boosts for a character of any ancestry. There have been many ongoing conversations in the gaming community and within Paizo about biological essentialism in RPGs. We think it’s time to address this issue and have added this universal option. This makes it clearer that ancestries aren’t a monolith, and adds more nuance to the world and a wider breadth of characters. To be clear: this is an alternative for all characters and campaigns, not a variant rule, since it’s expected to be in line with the power level of other options. If you have made or want to make a character using an ancestry’s printed options (such as a dwarf with a Con boost, Wisdom boost, free boost, and Charisma flaw), those options remain, and those characters still follow the updated rules. We started heading toward this adjustment in July and are very pleased to have this chance to implement it and bring it to the community!

The alchemist gets major changes to add more flexibility. This dovetails with new alchemy options coming in Treasure Vault, allowing more flexibility in choosing items for a research field instead of a narrow list. The largest number of changes are with the chirurgeon. An alchemist with this field can choose elixirs with the healing trait and can fully substitute Crafting for Medicine checks and proficiency prerequisites. Now that they can choose items that heal HP, we needed to add a limit for perpetual healing items to keep out-of-combat healing from careening out of control. As with alternate boosts, any alchemist you already made remains a valid character!

Most of the remaining changes are smaller improvements, like fixing an oversight on Simple Weapon Proficiency for clerics, making the horse animal companion work as intended, and having the soothe spell target “1 willing creature,” as suggested by Book of the Dead and the Blood Lords AP. We do, however, have one significant downgrade to talk about. The gnome flickmace was a bit overpowered. A one-handed reach weapon was stronger than we expected it to be, and it’s having more of an outsized reputation than a single weapon should usually have in the game. We’ve reduced its damage and added the sweep trait to bring it more in line with other flails. Its new stat line is Price 3 gp; Damage 1d6 B; Bulk 1; Hands 1; Group Flail; Weapon Traits Gnome, reach, sweep.

With the Pathfinder Core Rulebook 2nd printing beginning to arrive, we’ve published a list of errata found by Paizo staff and fans alike. Many thanks to those of you from paizo.com and other fan communities who helped find potential errata. While there’s a variety of small improvements, here’s a list of five of the changes that appear in the errata that had the most scope. Some of these were also present in the first set of errata:

• All classes increase their unarmed attack proficiency along with their weapons.
• Alchemists gain a scaling item DC without taking a feat and can make more of their field specialty items at 1st level, instead of 5th. They all gain medium armor proficiency in addition to unarmored and light armor.
• We simplified how you carry items into held, worn, and stowed items, making it easier to determine where you can find each of your items without needing to go nitty gritty and buy every bandolier, pouch, and pocket to contain them.
• We lowered the Bulk of several items and separated out the alchemist’s kit, which is for travel, from the alchemist’s lab, which is very heavy. These changes make it easier to carry your important tools on the go.
• We clarified Sustained spells to make it clear whether you could Sustain them multiple times in the same turn and get a benefit.

We hope these errata make the game even easier and more fun to play and run. Thanks to all the editors and playtesters for the Core Rulebook for helping us put out a product with relatively few errors despite how massive it is. While of course, no book is ever perfect and more errata may come down the line, we’re expecting that there won’t be any future updates of this size.

These changes exist largely to clarify intent, fix known issues, resolve inconsistencies, and generally improve quality of life for GMs and other players. Some highlights for player characters include cheaper grenades, medicinals, and poisons, while GMs now have guidance on creating gunnery numbers for NPC starships (and better balanced gunnery numbers for many of the sample starships included). Of course, there are a lot of changes to peruse, and we always welcome more questions, comments, and feedback on our Rules Questions forum.

Also note that the changes listed for the 1st and 2nd printings are already incorporated into both the Starfinder Core Rulebook Pocket Edition and the 3rd printing of the Starfinder Core Rulebook. Eagle-eyed readers of these new printings will notice that we also took the opportunity to clean up stray typos and make language more consistent.

The Pathfinder Core Rulebook has been out in the wide world for a few months now! While you’ve had a chance to put the game through its paces, we’ve been hard at work combing through feedback and questions from staff, players, and fans of the game, looking for any spots that need clarification.

As with any publication, we’ve found a few errors along the way, and we’ve been carefully collecting and compiling them. While we’re not going to list out every typo that we’ve now corrected, we want to provide everyone with the most central updates to the text of the game. Some of these are rules clarifications or corrections of simple errors, while others are broader changes to streamline play or bring core concepts of the game together. We’ve also provided a brief explanation of each change to help show our intent so you can more easily apply the changes to your game.

We should note that not every problem has been addressed in this document. Some are a bit complicated, and the solution is going to take more time to fully test before releasing it to all of you. Just because you don’t see an answer here doesn’t mean that we aren’t aware of and considering the issue—we’re likely just trying to figure out the best way to handle it. Please also note that this document contains updates for only the Core Rulebook. We’re still vetting some changes to the Bestiary and some other products, and we’ll get those changes out to you as soon as possible. Thank you for your understanding and patience as we work to make Pathfinder the best game it can be!
