Sovereign Court

I would like to attempt to play a Paladin/Hellknight character in PFS. Does anyone have such a character that has been played on PbP who I could look through? I'm mostly interested in how you approached conflicts, RP'd, and to start thinking about the type of issues such a character would need to contend with.

Secondary interest, LG Hellknights in general are interesting to me as well!

If you have advice for me, shoot me a PM! I don't want to devolve this thread into a paladin alignment thread :)

F HP: 8/8, AC 21/17/16, F+2, R+5, W+3, speed 40ft, Perception +1, init +5

You might want to search the boards, there's bound to be a thread or two about it.

A PM is but one voice, in a discussion you'd probably find more angles to work with.

Sovereign Court

I agree, but from what I've been able to scrounge up on the topic, such threads quickly devolve into unproductive debates about alignment. While those have value as they are at least somewhat representative of the discrepancies I may experience at any table, I think anecdotes are more useful at this point in my character development and player preparation. As far as I see it, I need to form and refine my own views before diving into a public, "anyone can enter" discussion on the topic.

You're free to skim this character. He's not a paladin, but he's a LN Hellknight that worships Iomedae. I've only played him on the boards once, though.

F HP: 8/8, AC 21/17/16, F+2, R+5, W+3, speed 40ft, Perception +1, init +5

You could think of what your paladin strives for, to better general society. Find a Hellknight order that matches his/her goals, and maybe go from there.

For example, has he/she had a bad experience with (let's go cliché) cultists, summoning things that destroyed the pally's family or town?
He/she could have the conviction that such individuals should be brought to justice, and if found irredeemable, kill them for the safety of the people.

(Order of the Pyre: Against fanatical [witches, warlocks, cultists, shamans, mystics and madmen])

Copper Gate | Skittershot | We Be 5uper Goblins!

The hellknight orders that would work best from an alignment perspective for a paladin are Pike, Torrent, Pyre, Scourge, Godclaw, Scar and maaaaaaybe Nail.

Pike is all about fighting monsters.

Torrent is about rescuing kidnap victims. It's almost excusively confined to Kintargo, and so while it might be useful for a character you're applying chronicles from Hell's Rebels to, you might have difficulty explaining what a Torrent HK was doing away from Kintargo.

Pyre, as noted above, is about fighting against fanatical and blasphemous cults. (I think about one PFS scenario in three involves defeating a cult of one sort or another.)

Scourge is about rooting out corruption and organized crime.

Godclaw is about fighting demons and chaos in the Worldwound.

Scar is a very small order but does still exist and is dedicated to hunting down assassins and stopping them before they can strike.

Nail is iffy. There are LG members in it, canonically, but the mission is about quelling "savages" and spreading the benefits of what they consider to be civilization. Has some unpleasant aspects to it.

Sovereign Court

My working character right now is shooting for the order of the torrent. From what I've read, traveling work is basically what they do! :D just meshing the whole Hellknight + paladin + pathfinder agent is something I'd like to see in action.

Quote:

Chaos cults! There is no difference for them between demon lord's cult and chaotic-good empyreal lord's cult. Also, foreign cults (of any orientation) is the same heresy for them. Even if they are lawful.

Just saying, I generally agree with everything. I love the hellknights theme. Cool concept, unique.

Hello, sorry if this question on the Unchained Barbarian has already been answered in a FAQ but I could not find anything.

I cannot see the reference on Ex-Barbarians for 'normal' Barbarians which stated a barbarian who becomes lawful loses the ability to rage and cannot gain more levels as a barbarian but retains all other benefits of the class.

Question: What happens to a character with levels in Unchained Barbarian that becomes lawful in PFS?

GM Aerondor wrote:

@Noral, I think this should be asked over at the Flaxseed lodge .

However as written it appears that there would be no penalty for being lawful. One could argue that they cannot gain levels, as they don't meet the requirements for the class anymore, but there is nothing in the unchained writeup that says they can no longer rage if they become lawful.
And in PFS2, lawful barbarians are permitted. And both Skalds and Bloodragers can be lawful.

Uuups, sorry for posting a PF question in the Starfinder thread! ;-)

Your answer completely makes sense!

I had no time (and some emotional barriers) to check out PF2. But good to know that there probably won't be an errata of the Unchained Barbarian given the new rules in PF2.

Thanks for the quick response!

What's your playing bandwidth looking like, I might help you tackle a couple of those.

GM question - what have GM's who are "graphically challenged" done if the "unmarked" maps aren't included in the back of the scenario? I've used some of the marked maps from the scenario expecting the players to "disbelieve" say if something is marked A1 or A2.

Also some of the flip maps are "marked up" too in the scenario. My graphics skills aren't that great that I can just erase the markings. I tried once but the coloring I tried to add "back in" left a discolored mark on the map.

Silver Crusade

I usually just use the marked up map if it's all there is. If it's bad enough, or just needing a grid for a fight in a large room, I also have a plain grid file.

Dark Archive

What are you using to pull the map out of the PDF? I have noticed that just clicking on the picture of the map and copy / pasting it tends to pull the map out alone without any of the overlay markings like traps, room numbers, ect.

This seems to work on most everything past Season 3

I generally try running it through a pdf extractor. A lot of times it'll pull the traps and secret doors off the map.

I've found it doesn't work as well with maps pre-season 4 though.

I use Abode to make a "snapshot" of the map then save it as a .jpg

Thanks! I'll try that next time.

Yup I use Adobe Acrobat as well. if you click on an image within the PDF it will highlight blue. You can copy/paste it then and it will just pull the map without all the traps, secret doors and all of that.

Tyranius's approach of select, copy, and paste is what I also use, and it usually works. There are some oddball maps where that also pulls the markings, and some (like the very early PFS approved modules) where the map comes in lots of little pieces.

...So long as the file you are copying and pasting from wasn't pre-flattened and the page or map made into basically a 'picture' of the layered file used to create the map in the first place--like most of the older modules are.

As an alternative for these flattened maps, if you are using Google Slides (and a PC or laptop) you can do things like copying the pasting the marked dungeon into Slides and then pasting a second copy on top of the first. Find a bit of floor (or whatever it is you are trying to hide) that is unmarked on the upper layer and (you will need a PC's functionality for this) crop the second image down to that bit and place it over the part you are trying to obscure. TA-DA! If you want to make sure it sticks in place, group the two layers together, and place them at the very back of all the layers (so you don't have PC tokens walking between the two layers). This works for walls with mysterious 'S's half hanging out of them (just crop down a piece of clean wall and floor and plop it down on top), and for the areas behind those 'S's (just use a bit of not-so-porous dungeon wall).

For example (spoilers ahead!):
In "Voice in the Void" there is a big hole in the floor covered over by some fungus that characters can find with a perception check, or I suppose, by walking over the spot. The hole shows on the map, so I just did what I described above and voila! No visible hole just more nondescript floor. I covered up the secret passage in "Hall of the Flesh Eaters" the same way. Both modules are oldies, but goodies.

If you don't mind using a command line, you can also use pdfimages to extract all of the images from a pdf file. This is what I did before I got an Adobe subscription for one of my classes.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

I use the ExtractPDF site that RePete linked to, as I find that I often end up with map markings I don't want if I just copy it using Adobe. Extract the image also has the advantage of letting me create a file on my computer with everything in it - maps (without creatures, secrets doors and stuff marked), illustrations, etc. That way I can also upload and link to the images of NPCs and such, so that the party gets the visual aid.

Rob - I am in fact still trying to decide what to run for GD VII. I'd run any of these for you:

7-01 Between the Lines (1-5)
7-24 Dead Man's Debt (1-5)
7-27 Beyond Azlant Ridge (3-7)
8-03 Captives of Toil (5-9)
8-05 Ungrounded but Unbroken (1-5)
8-22 Wrath of the Fleshwarped Queen (1-5)
9-14 Down the Verdant Path (1-5)

Your choice! Or if you'd rather not be faced with such choice, you sit back and I'll pick one.

Im currently in 2 pbps and am adding 1 more for the gameday.

I can generally handle playing about 6 at a time and GMing one. I keep meaning to start something these last two weeks but haven't yet been inspired. I'll probably decide on something this week althoufh it'll likely just wait for the gameday at this point.

One of my games just finished, so I'd actually be down to kick off a game of 9-14, Down the Verdant Path as soon as you're good to go (before GameDay is fine with me). Let me know and I'll get it going.

I had forgotten we had a con not too far away this weekend, don't quite have time to make it to that. I'll look through the list and narrow it down based on reviews and whimsy and shoot you a message.

New con in sacramento...

I try and make it up here every once in awhile and last time was about a year and a half ago.

Also I missed Memorial day cons this year so my wife could go to WisCons so it's been awhile.

Bronze House Reprisal is my personal favorite in that range. It’s a 5-9 with the second half a massive infiltration effort with a lot of ways to handle it. Even just smash and grab style, though where is the fun in that?

I know with the con season coming up and then game day stuff it could be awhile, But I'm looking for a tier 7 - 8 run of CORE #6-04 Beacon Below.

Port Godless from Season 5 (tier 5-9), can work as an infiltration. Not much mystery/political intrigue though.

Recently played Season 6 Darkest Abduction (tier 7-11) at high tier with 4 person adjustment. Fantasy New Orleans vibe from this one. Local politics and prejudice a strong part of the plot. You have to work/think *gasp* to find out what is really going on, which I liked. However, you aren't really undercover during the investigation.

Will say the BBEG fight is tough. Nearly TPK'd - though we all ended up surviving.

There will be a Gencon-related outage of the utility known as GM Hmm from now until August 7th.

Basically, I’ve sent my brain ahead to GenCon. It’s already there, plotting to take over the world. I am hoping that it will get reunited with my body when the rest of me flies into Indiana on Wednesday morning, but one never knows.

I am unlikely to answer emails, PMs or message board posts during this period. If you wish to have help, please contact Chris Marsh, Redelia or Magabeus. Thank you all for understanding.

Hugs from your temporarily brainless VC!

Hi,

Most of you won’t know me so sorry for taking up your time, but I was a regular before vanishing at the beginning of the year and rough patch towards the end of 2017. I just wanted to apologise to GM’s and Players for that and negatively impacting your experiences.

I am feeling a lot better and really missed the atmosphere here and all the cool people I have had the pleasure to roleplay with and keep hearing great things about the forums from friends and blogs etc.
I am looking to start playing again, but I totally understand if some people don’t want me around as it sucks to be messed around.
