Gimmicky, Expensive Items

3/5

Good: Shield/Armor upgrades, Tattoos, Weapons (love the Asp Coil even if it's just a whipsword from Soul Calibur)

Bad: Mostly items for high level adventurers or theatre kids who want a story behind how they acquired something. Most are gimmicky, limited utility for price. Completely skipped the chapter on adventurer aids since in my opinion that's a player/GM issue that developers are trying to navigate (poorly). Some items are highly expensive but don't have a baseline (the clockwork Macuahuitl for instance, I would have loved a cheap iLvl 1 Macuahuitl made canon!)

Indifferent: Merchants are Absalom-centric. If you don't care about Absalom, those parts aren't useful.

Conclusion: Expected Ultimate Equipment, but this didn't quite hit that mark.

Stoked! Equipment expansion is a real need, so this is very welcome! I'm assuming by the price that this is a 130 page book, which my wallet is a bit grateful for.

Plus I'm just excited for further details on Absalom.

This manual is very interesting. Especially if the part about the shops and merchants is set up in a similar way to the Otari Gazetter featured in Ruins of Gauntlight.

Color me intrigued

Petition for this to be the final cover. Valeros has some real Wirt energy from Over the Garden Wall...

I hope that have more alchemical items for my alchemist.

Oh, are we talking adventuring wheelchairs? Because that sounds great.

More equipment and magic items are always welcome. I just wish you would get away from Absalom for a change of pace.

This is the change of pace... First Lost Omens book in Absalom! To go along with the one AP set there.

WOAH! Yes! Sara is the one that made the Combat wheelchair homebrew for DnD5! Paizo snatched Sara for this book!

You are all awesome!

Was this always intended to be its own book or did it peel off the mythical Absalom book since it's been so long delayed?

This book was always intended to be independent.

Something like Magical Marketplace or Merchant's Manifest is closer to what this book is like. The book includes a lot of different shops. These shops feature an NPC merchant, their backstory, a description of the shop, plus some adventure hooks. These are intended for you to use as shops in your game and are a perfect answer for when the players ask "What's the shopkeep's name?"

Each shop has its own list of items based around the shop's theme. For example, a monster hunter themed shop would have items that are useful for hunting monsters.

We hope that people like the way things are presented!

Awesome!!!!!

Something I missed earlier. Being a blind guy, I really appreciate the accessibility options.

Welp I guess that rules out the September slot and thus a 2021 release at all for the absalom book. At this point it seems it’s been cancelled and they just don’t want to tell us yet. Who knows, maybe it will come out in 2022, but it seems more and more unlikely with every new product announced.

This looks like a fun book.

I'd be surprised. A hilarious amount of work has gone into it and interest remains high. There's also no actual requirement that it come out "in schedule" and instead could appear between or alongside slated Lost Omens releases.

I like the idea. I am fond of disabled characters, and having an official option for playing them is neat.

That cover art... Dx Ekaterina is such a goddess - I love the idea of accessibility items!!!!

Very excited for this! Any chance it will include a method for randomly generating shops & shopkeepers?

Paizo Employee Developer

10 people marked this as a favorite.

There's no random shop system included. We're trying to cover as many shop themes as possible to meet the needs of everyone's campaigns, though. We have over 20 unique shops in the book, so hopefully you can find one that works for what you need!

This art is gorgeous, and I kind of hope it stays the same, Valeros is just like "WHY DID WE BUY A GOAT FEIYA?"

Are the shops set levels or are they scaleable to whatever environment they are placed in?

Paizo Employee Developer

7 people marked this as a favorite.

The NPC shopkeepers note levels, but the shop themselves don't have any levels. You can use the shop in any level settlement and sell whatever level item you need.
