Pathfinder Playtest Preorder Update

Wednesday, August 1, 2018

When Paizo was planning this year's Pathfinder Playtest, we expected to exceed our own ability to fulfill orders on a timely basis, so we decided to use Fulfillment by Amazon. Unfortunately, Amazon's reports indicate that most customers will not be receiving their orders by tomorrow's release date. They shipped 3 orders on July 28, 3 more on July 29, and no orders on July 30 or 31. Today, they have shipped almost 10% of the outstanding orders, and they are continuing to ship through the night and into tomorrow. They have so far been unable to tell us when they will complete shipping. We will be posting updates as we receive them in this forum thread.

This delay doesn't impact preorders placed with retailers; most of them should have already received their products for release tomorrow. Paizo.com preorders for pickup at Gen Con are also unaffected.

We sincerely apologize for this delay. If your paizo.com Pathfinder Playtest preorder is being fulfilled by Amazon, we will be giving you $15 in paizo.com store credit in the near future.

PDFs of all of the playtest products will be available for free shortly after 6:00 AM Pacific time at paizo.com/pathfinderplaytest.

From Paizo? Hopefully they'll be arriving in the Shaky Isles soon!

There are still just under 2 dozen orders that are either unshipped or partially shipped. (I'm still getting shipping notifications on a regular basis.)

I hope mine isn't among those, I'm running my first playtest round this Saturday and it would be great if I'd have my books by then.

I got access to a report that lets me look at things in aggregate much more easily. They're still updating it, and they tell me that some of the delivery dates will move up, but as of now, about 21% of the Australian shipments are scheduled for delivery August 8 and 9. 35% are spread from August 10 to August 23. 41% are scheduled for August 24. The stragglers are scheduled to arrive by September 6.

I just looked at an order that shipped 3 minutes ago (it happens to be to North Carolina) and it's scheduled to arrive Wednesday.

Thanks for all your efforts, Vic!
If you spot any more updates concerning the Netherlands, would you mind sharing?

Also thank you for the store credit!

Awesome, Vic. Thanks.

I'm going to trust the average and go with...August 20th.

About a third of them are schedule to arrive on August 6 or 7. The other two thirds are scheduled to arrive on September 6 or 7, with a couple stragglers on September 10. (There's literally none scheduled for delivery between 8/7 and 9/6.)

Urk, why the huge disparities? I had quite a big shipment (two special edition rulebooks and two Doomsday Dawn adventures), so I fear I'll be on the very late side, even living in one of the more accessible parts of the world.

That's quite a large range. Could you maybe look which batch order 5009058 is in? If you don't want to do that because that might set a precedent, that's completely understandable. Just a bit nervous about not knowing.

Vic Wertz, you are incredible!

I hope you get to live a hundred years in the best possible health.

There are not many people who handle issues like this in such a great manner - and that on a free weekend too.

If i'll ever meet you, i'll buy you a drink. :-)

My thanks to all the other people involved too (like the guys handing out the store credit and the people who made sure that the downloads worked so well and such).

Gen Con is always a tense time and i fear next year will be no exception.

The good thing is, the playtest wasn't only a test about the rules, but also about the shipping of the (physical) rules, so when PF 2.0 ships in august 2019, the process should hopefully run more smoothly.

Well said. Effectively end to end testing in ecommerce! A shame for Amazon to drop the ball, but awesome of Vic to keep us updated.

I started our playtest yesterday. I drew up the map and we all used PDFs to guide us. We got through 3 encounters, so presumably if we get back together next Monday hopefully I'll have the flip map then.

Thanks for the update!

Agreed, the disparity in shipment dates to the same country (variations up to a month) are absolutely baffling.

I think the offer of some sort of compensation was laudable. However, when my shipping costs were $15.75, why was I not given store credit equal to the higher shipping costs I paid by ordering it from Paizo?

Not everyone had the same shipping costs as you did, thus they probably gave what they thought was a reasonable compensation to everyone for the extra waiting time - i.e. it's not a refund of shipping costs, but a compensation for the longer wait.

Unfortunately the minimum eGiftcard is $5, otherwise I would have gladly gifted you a giftcard of $0.75 since it seems to be so important to you that you get those last $0.75. I hope the "missing" $0.75 doesn't wreck your monthly budget.

Thank you for being condescending.

Its the principle of the matter, not the cash.

You might say it's the principle of the matter, but for $0.75 it just seems petty to me. Again, keep in mind that this is something you're getting even if Amazon decides to reimburse all the shipping costs - it's not a replacement for your shipping costs, so the fact that you paid $15.75 is immaterial to the store credit.

As Vic posted earlier:

Vic Wertz wrote:
Gunny wrote:
Instead of a store credit I would prefer a $15 refund to my credit card that would offset the delivery charges since Amazon failed to meet up to its obligation.

We have asked them to step up and waive the fees for all of these orders. I have no idea whether they will do that or not, but if they do, we will refund your shipping fees in addition to issuing the $15 paizo.com store credit.

I'm going to wager that $15.75 is a pretty standard shipping price for State-side shipments. But even so, without knowing whether Amazon was going to credit us the shipping cost for botching this, the store credit should have equaled or exceeded the shipping cost for every individual.

And regardless whether you think I'm being petty or not, it doesn't give you license to be a jerk about it. Just say, "hey, I think that quibbling over 75 cents is a bit petty," instead of being nasty about it.

Regarding the date disparities for particular regions, many international shipping services have 4 pound maximums or minimums. I am assuming that when Amazon has chosen different services for similar destinations, the reason is usually because they're sending packages under 4 pounds via one method, and packages over 4 pounds via another.

I know it's not Paizo's fault, but it's getting a bit frustrating. I live 20 minutes from a fulfillment center, and about 40 minutes to an hour from Paizo. So far, I haven't even seen anything and it's down to the last couple of dozen orders?

Thanks for all the information and keeping us up to date.

We haven't sent any order confirmations that say things like that. Looking at your orders, you appear to to have started a playtest order with us, but never completed it. Did you perhaps change your mind and order from Amazon directly? The messages you received sound much more like something they would have sent.

Not trackable

SO... Who is telling the truth.

Still not gotten mine so Paizo jumped the gun?

I got the exact same emails (different package #) and I still don't have my copies. It kind of blows that it's not trackable either. Plus Paizo says my order is complete.

I did buy a softcover version of the playtest at GenCon, but that was mostly for my players' benefit. I hope it comes soon!!!

70% of orders to Great Britain are dispersed fairly evenly from August 8 to August 20. 30% are set for September 6 or 7.

Sigh. It turns out I was right the first time—the numbers I was using did NOT include the cancelled test orders, so when I "corrected" it to 96%, it was really closer to 86%. And when I posted that there were just under 2 dozen orders, I was misunderstanding one of their status filters—there were more unshipped orders that I wasn't seeing. They are actually at just over 94% shipped.

Grand Lodge

I got my email indicating that my order was shipping almost a month ago now. I still have not seen anything on my side. Obviously that email is indicating that the package is not trackable and that it is coming from Amazon. Should I be concerned? How do I get my order?

Received in upstate NY today, right around the same time the special edition I ordered from Amazon yesterday with overnight shipping arrived. Today and tomorrow are the last days of my vacation, and I wanted at least a little time with the book.

I have been informed that the differences I was seeing were due to orders that were "fully prepared but haven't yet left the fulfillment center," which is currently about 6%, and that the percentage of orders yet to be processed is less than 1%.

Thanks, Vic, for the regular updates! I really appreciate the regular communication.

I BEG you guys to do something different next year when the real book comes out. If you want people to pre-order, you have to give them an incentive to do so. This is the opposite of an incentive.

I stopped by a local game store on Saturday and they had everything (hardcover, softcover, leather cover, maps, adventure). My mail carrier disappointed me again today. :-( Having PDFs to read certainly helps, but it is frustrating.

I know having a big blowout launch at Gen Con is the industry standard thing to do, but why not ship pre-orders a week early? Would it really hurt anything?

At any rate, please please please please please please consider doing something different next year.

Thanks for listening.

WOW - Speachless (In a good way!)

Not only is Paizo, pro-active, upfront, transparent, responsive in all of this, but they are also taking responsability and showing loyalty towards their clients which they obviously value so much, in that they are giving a credit to compensate clients for delays that are out of their control.

And I am not even mentioning that throughout this delay, all the materials are made available digitally for free. So the impact of the delay is mitigated by the fact that the materials are already avaialable to Paizo customers in digital format. (Well OK, I am mentioning it.)

I wish all companies I deal with would take example from this unprecendented and unheard of level of customer support.

As a proud customer of Paizo, I see no cause for concern, alarm or complaint by any of this. I cannot wait to start testing 2.0 with my Pathfinder group (giddy girly excitement a'la Stewie from Family Guy)

A shout out also to Vic Wertz, who so obviously dedicated so much time and effort to this issue and ot answering all the concerns listed by people on this post. Consider how much extra time he would have had to perform other responsabilities, but clearly he is putting customer concerns over all other work obligations.

OK - so not so speachless as I orinally stated at the beginning. I just felt inspired and compelled to voice this acclamation to the entire Paizo family of employees. The fact that as a longtime customer of Paizo, it has been my experience not expect anything less from Paizo, does not mean that I cannot still be pleasantly surprised from, and in awe of, Paizo surpassing themselves.

Vic, you are doing a great job at managing expectations. Paizo Order #4781286 is now street date plus 5. :(

Vic and the of the Paizo crew, thank you for doing what you do to keep us informed. I knew several years ago when I left that other gaming company that I was making the right decision. You most definitely go above and beyond what you'd expect for a company and I know I really appreciate that. It was really unfortunate to have Amazon drop that ball like they did with this release but Paizo stepping up to right their wrong was commendable. Now hopefully I can get my rulebook before boarding the plane on Saturday (since it's right now stuck between leaving the shipper and in the USPS system).
