Hi Everyone,
Tomorrow I'm having a catheterization on my left side tomorrow, so I won't be on the boards that day. But I hope to be back on during the weekend. Thanks all.

The Olympian |

Thank you.

Yes, be well!

Howdy. posting here for easier referencing. Also to avoid cloging with long messages. Spoilers work great on this forum; less good on social media communicators.
Concerning the possible character switch. I do have one drafted out. From that world, with a s hort backstory. I even have an idea of how to introduce him.
I did however have a few questions on how you read some abilities that are weirdly worded.
Also a potential homebrew-sorta.
Context for a few Q's. One of the goals was to use Cantrip as the main attack-at least for a few levels. It won't keep up eventually but I love the idea of it. Hazard is on the class list. Energy ray i'm getting from technomancer. There are no melee cantrips. I do have a few attack spells as well.
Homebrew Paradigm Shift first. Both Technomancer and Mystic both have the option (Harmful Spells Magic Hack/ alternate choice "epiphany" (no direct url to it)) that adds 1/2 their level to damage to spells. Applies to AOE, but only to one instance if its a multi target spell. etc. Basically I'd like that to be an option for Witchwarpers. They haven't had much supplement since release but I'd expect it'll come. Its the only caster w/out that option.
Preferably at level 2 like magic hack. As I don't like those options anyway.
--I want to make the 2 attack cantrips my main weapons; at least for a while.
Questions.
1 Water Magic Feat.
This specifies the Water Descriptor-which exists in 2 spells I could find. One does do damage-but it does cold damage. Lv3 Ice Bolt-water descriptor, cold damage. I've also never seen Water descriptor in general before; its not an element in the game-they all do Cold Damage.
Are Cold and Water descriptors functionally the same?
Kind of important to know if it works for Energy Ray and Hazard cantrips. As those only list the main elements. Though might be retrained to Mystic Strike when I someday have to give up cantrip weapons.
but if homebrew paradigm and water=cold, t hen Hazard and Energy ray will add my Lv to damage. d3+5. Not amazing but not terrible. Comparible to Zellgato's damage actually with his d8+2. Shorter range, but hazard is an aoe cantrip (Save or no damage tho)
2 Ectoplasmic Barrage spell is a bit weird. It does not list a number of projectiles. It says "each projectile" and you are allowed to target "up to two creatures" w/in 30ft of each other.
Logically that means 2 projectiles. What it does not specify is; can you target one thing with both projectiles? It does not say it can nor does it say it cannot. It just has you roll a ranged attack vs kac for each projectile in the barrage.
I read that originally as 2v1 or 2v2 as you wish. Which also made sense with the KaC and lower damage compared to the same level damage spells. But I saw a post elsewhere stating otherwise. So. I'm asking you rather than assuming.
3. Another situation where I undrestood it one way but looking it up making this character it doesn't sound like I was reading it right. So asking.
Infinite Worlds: Can you only pay one slot at a time? The first few times I read it. I thought you could pay for multiple effects with more than one slot. Up to the maximum you can do. With all effects set by the highest slot used. The way the ability is phrased, I assumed you could add multiple layers because it talks about multiple effects in one area. But if its only 1 slot per use. You can not layer multi infinite worlds in one. Though you could get multiple smaller effects using a very high level slot. I do find that odd though; as its hard to justify difficult terrain and 3 damage a round for a level 3 slot-compared to the spell options at that level.
But reading other things it might be only 1 slot ever. Which makes it rather hard to use; but would explain why its kind of hated ability.
I.e. is it.
Standard Action pay 1 slot, get up to that slot’s effect in abilities. I.e. level 2 slot to get difficult terrain and dazzle effect (2 level 1s) or environmental damage (level 2 slot, so 2 damage a round).
Standard Action. Pay multiple slots, to get multiple effects with one use. I.e. I pay 1 level 2 slot and 1 level 1 slot. I get 2 persistent damage, and difficult terrain.
B would let me do combos that wouldn’t be doable until 3rd level spells; cost me more slots but better action economy
I'm not sure how often I'd use this abilty though, difficult terrain option is the only one thats worth much; the rest cost way too much to use a high slot on. Which might explain why I ended up reading the way I did originally; as that makes the ability work a lot better.
Character is finished; except for spending starting income-as I don't know what that amount is.
Also. I used standard 10point buy; but is that the correct amount?
and yes, he may be a version of Zellgato, depending on how you read into it. Either from the same world as other Zellgato, or from this world but gifted that mask from the others. Depends on where the GM sees it fitting in their plan.
He could return now with the others. He realizes he's a bad fit for that world, and the other him kind of bothers him. But he does know he can sure up the defense quite well with his biohacks, as well as keep an eye out on the other group with flora/fauna and patriot.
Assuming nothing crazy happens. Post that, he can pull a Gristlethorn and fade into the background of the base. Likely working in the med lab, and also trying to improve the security. I imagine the uplifted bear diplomat likely went a bit into the PR dept.
and or they could return to their world/other them army. Depending on how things are wanted to go.
As for where Zazz Zakkun comes in, as in his backstory, he's a Part time P.I. Part time Paralegal. He tends to spepcializes in weirder ones. So, through his work, he could have worked as a consultant with the Police b efore. Particularly Det Macloud on some random cases previously-as I am under the impression he's seen some weird stuff.. With what happened the day before, and today, the Police could've hired him as a consultant for tonight and he could been on home d efense while the rest was going on. With Scarlet/Boston Theoritical and the Det coming into contact due to the scene and recommending him or wanting to hire him. Given the otherworld and the recent magic trend.
So given the few hours between-unless home defense went badly, be a decent switch spot.
He doesn't wear a mask like Zellgato-generally speaking, he does have a gator and goggles he'd use if he's using magic in public. If hired by BT, he'd want it to show as a random consultant for PI or Paralegal skills. Rather than "super hero team" though magic and all isn't subtle.

SURE
Are Cold and Water descriptors functionally the same?
Water spells have always tended to do cold damage if they did damage going back to 3.5 D&D at least.
2 Ectoplasmic Barrage spell is a bit weird.
YES IT IS WEIRD and I'm not confident I understand it. There's some information missing there and I'd like to see more info on it. I searched online and found nothing. A 'barrage' suggests more than one. Two targets allowed, so more than one. Nothing about how much. I assumed at first, looking at how it scales up, that you could divide the dice among targets, but it doesn't say that.
"Though you could get multiple smaller effects using a very high level slot. I do find that odd though; as its hard to justify difficult terrain and 3 damage a round for a level 3 slot-compared to the spell options at that level."
^^^^^
I THINK THIS IS ACCURATE. IT IS CONFUSING THOUGH.

Zellgato |

I've noticed in general some spells I feel like omit details they shouldn't. Some have untyped damage-which is weird to me coming from pathfinder.
Ecto Barrage.
Yep.. I feel like its forgotten text. I mostly liked it for the fact it is one of 3 spells that can effect etheral I know of. and the only level 1. For witchwarpers. I do have a 1/day magic missle though.
it seems like its easier to switch it out for a different spell. Maybe that Overheat; small aoe fire isn't ideal but no cold spells at 1st lv. Or summmon-but thats also confusing currently for me-Dunno where the base stats are..
I'll have a look around the spelllist again. I'm leaning towards 2 attack, 2 utility.
As there is a paradigm combo that lets you pull spells temporarily; albiet costing Resolve points. but it offers great utilty.
Weird Inifnite Worlds.
Cool Beans, its probably not going to be used very often as it directly competes with spells; which for the most part are better. Except for Level 1's Difficult Terrain, that might get used as it can tailor to specific movement types only.
Shame they removed the "per day" from playtest. Slot cost is very high.
I prefer the current effect lists, but having several free per day uses, equivilent to the highest slot you can cast, or letting you pay a resolve point to use it as if you used the highest slot you know. I'd honestly pay resolve over spell slots; unless you chose the few paradigms that use it. Witchwarper is like Biohacker.. Resolves don't serve much purpose.
----------
I love Zellgato, but he doesn't quite fit the tone of this one, as he was built for the last one. and Biohacker is a class I'm finding doesn't "grow" well. Its almost the same as it was at level 2. Not really any new options, nor any different methods of play.
Feels like a class that's better multiclassed w/ mechanic, technomancer or maybe a Soldier.
So switching out for a guy from this world seems apt at some point, if narratively possible. Character without apocolypse world scars and all.
(Though still related to the multiverse of Zellgato theme at this point, depending on how its read; descendent of this world's or pulled from the past and tossed here for a "happy" version somewhere in existance. Depending on how original Zellgato from this game is/was)

Zwordsman |
Okie dokie. Sounds good. Either he can be called away, or he'll remain behind for the gate watching. He feels confident with a squad-those cops will be a lot stronger with hacks and antidotes. (Objectively that home defense would enjoy a biohacker support buffs) Then he'll get called away in the interiam during this adventure.
--------
Since there is homebrewing going on. Could we add Energy Ray to the class list? I'm currently taking technomatic dabbler (which means i increased int as well) mainly to get that cantrip. If thats fine. I'll drop the Int a little, Water Spell and Technomatic Dabbler, then pick up mobility and Agile Casting (so he can move and cast~).
Lowers damage and removes magic missle. but it feels really cool~
but otherwise. Assuming standard 10 points to spend on ability stats (was for Zellgato's original. I'm not sure if it was for the superhero stats), and 9000 credits. The character is fairly built, have character traits in my head, trying to find nice comparable art but working on a description. I do need to decide the last level 1 spells. but I've more or less made that choice. Summon creature was very tempting and I figured out how it works. But also feels like it would be a bit awkward in use. So I'll skip it for now. May also downgrade armour. I chose it for aesthetics and slots haha. though low hp/stamina means its not bad to have strong armour.

Zwordsman |
Okie dokie. It looks like recuitment stated Standard. But wasn't sure as Zellgato had a lot lower stats in general than others it seemed like. I just assumed race or special class's effects
for now I'll finish it up tonight assuming standard stats and make a Alias
Thanks for the energy ray! Inefficient but so cool

I need to polish the sheet, it looks like I had a lot of small clerical errors. But the general stuff looks to be accurate for review. Will have to fix the small formating and settle up the headliner detailer.
May change name still... Zazz was the original one but I have an alias with that already; so thought I might confuse it. Might end up with a completely random name. or go with a Title.
Way too many of my go to name/personality trait suites are related to Z names. hah

Tarren, how exactly do archetypes work in Starfinder? Would I be able to retcon application of the Medic archetype? I’m not positive what exactly it will cost me from the zoomer base class, that’s the main question.

Legato Oaks |

This is Zellgato's potential Witchwarper replacement. Depending on how the story goes.
off hand power set fits better probably; and likely fits better with the team's low reliance on 10min stamina (biohackers are notorious for those). First feat might change to mobility.. debating skills vs Mobil casting
He's a paralegal(part time), PI (part time).
I'll fix up the hyper links and finish adding more. but its there for GM review. Top of it has a GM fiat question.
In the meantime Zellgato will be doing his thing, and buying the new injection sniper once he has some time to work with BT to improve his weaponry.

Apologies - Nissa reached me off-line and made me realize my comment about things being “not cool here” could easily and incorrectly be interpreted as here in the game. That could not be farther from the truth. IRL, I had reached my breaking point and couldn’t find the cause and it was crushing me.
On that front, things are better and there is considerable improvement on the horizon, but things are still getting sorted as I try to deal with the overload I have created attempting for my self trying to find my own solution via distractions.
For the record, for me, the answer appears to be: Say something. I have been far more candid with those in my personal circles lately and they have, to a person, lifted me up and given me more strength. I suppose this post is another of these even though it is offered as an explanation rather than a cry for help. Thanks for being here.

Tarren the Dungeon Master |

I had understood you as meaning in your personal life. I get that. This game has been going on for quite sometime and I've had ups and downs in my personal life as well. One of my solutions for this is that every time you leap through a transdimensional portal, I ask you whether you want your character to arrive at their destination or if you'd rather take a break as they get whisked out of the story. This lets people step out of the game when they need a break.

Charles Wilde |

It never even occurred to me to take that badly. Glad things are looking up for you at least!

The Olympian |

Well, Tarren. My country's judicious branch has let the country down. I hope you give us many remote-controlled primates and maybe star-spangled traitors to beat down, because The Olympian is ready!!

The Olympian |

Three winged monkeys on your side of the exclusion zone. Captain Canine, Cat Lady, Beast Tamer, and the rest of the Animal Control semi-super team are on their way.
The Olympian takes a mental note to give Cat lady a call. She sounds like fun. Maybe she's free on Saturn's Day.

I mildly hope Cat Lady is just a crazy old cat lady now.
Once upon a time she was known as The Felonious Feline, but she retired from crime to spend the money she stole on a shelter for cats. Bored in retirement, at 59, she became one of the founding members of Animal Control. That was 10 years ago. Few in the hero community know she used to be a semi-super-villain.

Zellgato |

Howdy.
Putting it here. I'm not sure when a good time would be. This game is pretty fast paced time wise. Much less take a bit of time to visit Doc Z, and maybe the fortune teller. And look into getting a citizinship sort of deal and an apartment off campus so to speak~ Transtion to having a normal sidelife~ balance. i'll start throwing that in here and there during some moments of downtime, and some will probably occur off panel given the tempo. I'll likely have his personality switch up earlier so I enjoy it more.
Or as you said before. Could just have the last portal came back slightly different experience wise. With a Zellgato who learned abit more. etc.
Basically though. I'm going to lean into him being a general human doing his best. As he doesnt really feature much in the way of super powers. And is no longer particularly speedy.
So leaning in on the normal, and learning abit of magic.(See next tab)
ampoule and dabbler lets him have some small magic ability. Some fun tricks. Although ampoule is heavily restricted and abit awkward. But is fun sounding and unique.
Series of one shots and such let me figure out more what bothers and or is good fo me. Biohackers are great 1-3 or so. and then are rough till 8. But I do love them. They really can switch up weapons if built well. Which helps with the tempo issues. So I think I will keep up with Biohacker. Technomancer doesn't interest me much as a class. Precog is kind of neat. He might multiclass after 8 though. 8 will give him full weapon spec w/ all his injection weapons. Which feels good.
Proposed changes
lower int 19, to 18 (in effect starting at lv 1 w/ 16 instead of 18) and putting that point into 16 16 12 18 10 8. Allowing Zellgato to use full range of motions. (base stats w/ no items)
switch out battle medic theme. In the same vein of fleet and jet dash, overlaps heavily w/ Henri. Quartermaster might fit his history of being the "odd job" person in his platoon.Prole is also very good. Fits his current profession well. and team player helps his habit of helping others do things so far.
Toss out Far shot feat-orignally taken due to no Injection snipers. and probably also lose Fleet and Jetdash. Most of the team has 40ft and or jetdash sort of motif.
Looking at replacing with Weapon Focus and Versatile Focus. So he has full range of options for each situation.
I was also eyeballing Technomagic Dabbler. Would let me use Spellgems. Although cannot craft them, so use would depend on income and if they exist in BTverse.
Switch up Theoroms. lose Medical Mastery-doesn't come up much, and doesn't provide much consistency. Get Painful Injection which adds static damage and fluffs as Zellgato's custom brew.
Considering possibly switching the Ampoule Expertise is another theorom I was considering that would fit really well with the concept of learning magic. As they're simliar to biohacks. It feels like it might be abit wasteful though. Highly limited choices, requires Resolve to use on anyone else, etc. Biggest benefit is that he could craft them now that he knows the spells for ampoules.
Lv 7 could take that magic inclined field of study maybe. Its breakthrough is neat and I think would restore uses of Technomatic dabbler. Wouldn't help the Ampoules though which is a shame. Would have meant I could make ampoules for the group to hand out each morning or with a short rest.
Dabbling a bit in magic and science might be a decent spot for him.
I have the intention, when time allows to sell a lot of what he has (10% is rough) and buy several lower level stuff. Which is my current plan.
However, if you would rather do a full switch out that occured back when Zellgato returned from his world (having screwed time up and changed his past selves' fall into large paranoia which is what I had happen). Then I could just start over cleaner.
TOTAL WEALTH FOR LEVEL 6: 15,000

Absolute Compass 250
Concealed Compartments 175.
Carbon Skin Armour. 1220.

if we dont' track ammo. I'm going to buy a 20cr tool....that is purely a coffee brew set.

Some BT clarrification questions!
BT is a think tank, it clearly has some relation to the government given Patriot's comments and some pressure from president that Bosslady mentioned in passing.
But are we a government agency?
Are we a law enforcement authorized agency?
We are tangential super heros basically. But Is that the actual team's job at this point? Or, taking Kai for example hero-ing was a side quest for their work. Nissa's modeling. Theo and Charles likely being scientifically important to examine.
Is Zellgato basically on a governemtn sponsored green card for work situation? Or is it more, they're keeeping details of otherworlds secret (till recent events) and now he's a public figure so they haven't really brought it up to BT and surpressed it in the news.
Patroit's group, Are they government sponsored. Basically post-prison transitional job situation for most except Patriot?
Or is it kind of like two political parties pushing agendas in the public using the two teams?
Depending on how I can finagle. I was pondering trying to have Zellgato lean towards some magitech and maybe magic bullet stuff~ As he can shoot ampoules. Although they aren't the most offensive sadly. Wish they were just spellgems with differnet forms.

I think Boston Theoretical is a defense contractor company.

Tarren the Dungeon Master |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |

The Zellgato changes all sound reasonable. We can always find a way to justify them, but the easiest way is that, when Zellgato returned for a visit to World 12 something shifted in the timeline and Zellgato became a slightly different version of himself. About 20 years after Zellgato's first adventure FATE started manipulating the timeline and World 12's TAROT tried to stop them. Things got messy. If April Patel never becomes Ms. Gray then Zellgato's world becomes quite different.

Tarren the Dungeon Master |

I think Boston Theoretical is a defense contractor company.
Yes, but on the research side of things and with a focus on weird science such as alien tech, transdimensional travel, and cryptids. There isn't a lot of pressure on them to turn out usable stuff, but the transdimensional thing is really working out for them.
No one in Washington really cared about Boston Theoretical before but things are getting exciting now. BT is beginning to get the kind of attention it doesn't want ... the attention of greedy businesspeople and the politicians they own.

Zellgato |

Want me to switch out now, or the next lull? ALthough the lulls in this game are hard to catch~ So I'd appreciate a heads up. Wand timing and all.
Ah, I see. I kind of know how that feels then. Our town had an electric car plant opened up. So population explosion, suddenly state capitol cares about the local area, and we're under funded. So weird attention and weird business focing things~ So that'll be a good frame of mind there.
So realistically, if we were to invade here it isn't exactly sactioned etc. With some ramifcations if it goes sideways? Neat.

Tarren the Dungeon Master |

I know the team is making a trip offworld this week (game time). Someone will have to take April home to World 12 too. Either of those times make more sense.
As a rule, I've not had changes to timelines on one world affect things in other worlds. You can stop Agent Patel from becoming Ms. Grey on World 12, but her incursions into World Z still happened.
So, World 12 hot take ... April Patel goes back and becomes an Agent of TAROT dedicated to restoring the timeline. Ms. Grey, Director of FATE in her own alternate timeline, battles to protect the alternate timeline.

Zellgato |

Sounds good. We'll address it when we get there in the future.
I'll just keep reading and thinking and developing his concept as he goes on.
Pure biohacker or biohacker nanocyte are the best for his concept now. We'll address when time comes.

We are preparing to leave for our trip to Somewhere New (tm) and I have no guarantee of a network connection for much of the next week. Please bot Henri as necessary and I look forward to seeing what you’ve gotten up to in my absence. Cheers!

Henri Patineur |

Thank you! It was a wonderful trip and included adventures planned and unplanned. The planned adventures involved riding rented bicycles as far as we could along Lake Tahoe (we went much farther than we thought we could and suffered no ill effects the next day - a fact we happily have noted for future rides) followed by a hike up Donner Pass until we lost the trail. Fortunately, we did not run out of rations, so we did not have to make any difficult decisions. That's as close as I will get to trying to make humor from that terrible tale - look up the Donner Party if you aren't familiar with that particular tale from American pioneer history.
The unplanned adventures involved a train that suddenly was no longer available to take us home and the resulting scramble to find a route home. (Quite literally, think Planes, Trains, and Automobiles.) It worked out, but there was some concern as we realized the American railway workers' strike was going to have a very real and very personal effect on us! I absolutely support their right to negotiate for better work conditions - but our train was cancelled before the strike was even supposed to start! AND THEN THERE WAS NO STRIKE!
I'm actually not remotely upset, the trip back was fine and we got an extra day in our vacation destination thanks to awesome folks at the place where we stayed. It's just ... SMH
But, to the real reason I came here - @Tarren, I realized in my post to Teleporting Boy that I don't believe I gave Henri any languages besides whatever the default is (English?). Should he have received extra languages from a high INT or was his world situation such that he would really only have had access to a single language?

Tarren the Dungeon Master |

Henri should definitely pick up some languages. With Mexico doing aid work in what used to be Texas and Arizona, Henri would have come across Spanish. Also, as large-scale society crumbled, smaller local groups formed. The language spoken by the founders would become the group's language, so anything is possible. If Henri spent time on a commune founded by someone who spoke a language other than English, he could have learned that group's language.

Henri Patineur |

Cool.
Spanish
French
...
an indigenous language from the Southwest US? Would Navajo be a thing?
