I’m under the opinion we should rest for the night, and head to the Bahamas in the morning.

I’m down to 1 RP, from having used my powers a lot. 2x gate-jumps, 2x in cockpit but without gating, 1x for fourth-wall, 1x through a wall. The flight to the Bahamas is shorter than a full rest, so it’s rest here or rest there really. Resting here lets Theo do his downtime RP with Enyo, which I think he can just do now if he has no input on the World 12 stuff.

With Portly already in transit to General Cho, there’s no known security risk at Boston Scientific.

A rest makes sense. I've given Verve and Charles and whoever else wants to investigate a quick possible sidequest. Theo is about to get drunk with someone who is going to tell him ALL about the Tarotverse, if asked. Kai has some research to do on a strange black box. And, L.C. is probably going to have some news for Nissa. All of this could happen play out during rest time and before a morning trip to the Bahamas.

Okay... I like that! While Kai’s investigating the black box, I’ll have Nissa check on L.C.

(She’s already checked her voicemail.)

I figured she'd invite you if she was following up on it.

@Charles,
Lv.5 - increase INT, you get 5 SP, and can have 5 ranks in a new skill.
(As long as you started with 16 INT or less.)

…and yes, I did click open the spoilers because these party-split adventures are too damn entertaining to ignore!

Oh, I am planning on increasing Int next level, don't worry. The main debate is if I'll do all physical stats + Int or skip Dex and do Wis also.

I think players looking under spoilers is different than characters looking under spoilers. I mean, the characters may still get to ask Charles and Verve what they got up to last night even if the player knows.

Charles is definitely going to have to deal with people treating him as a superhero one of these days. :D

Channel SuperHeroWatch's most-viewed teen contributors include Theo and Verve's fans from the poultry factory sidetrek. Since Charles has never really spoken in public in his 'monstrous form' on any of these, people are starting to assume Charles is a pet.

I'm thinking of starting a time travel PbP.

The problem with time travel PbPs, as I see it, is no one wants to mess up history because that would be wrong and tidying up history to cover your tracks means detail oriented thinking that might not work on a PbP unless you get a bunch of history buffs.

But, what if the timeline is already messed up. What if some shadowy agency has manipulated the timeline to the degree that FATE has on World 12.

If the other team of time travelers are breeding werewolves in the Tuck Valley during the McCoy-Hatfield Feud, then what would it matter if the PCs came out guns blazing. Things start off really messed up and the PCs race through time being the lesser of two evils in the timeline.

Still thinking about it though.

Time travel stories can be tricky. I still remember, having lived in a dorm fulla trekkies, a Deep Space 9 episode where the entire crew saw the results of them going back in time and having sex:

A once uninhabited planet ended up widely populated by the DS9 crew’s descendants. They all decided to not fix time (after convincing the world that they should!), except for the one dissenting crewman whose lover died in the past. And that’s how it ended—billions of people erased from existence, and that one guy getting The Look.

That’s not intended to discourage you. Just might be a game for players who like being in those kinds of moral dilemmas where even “the right thing” ends up feeling so wrong.

(As you said: “lesser of two evils.”)

Time travel can be really tricky, at least if the PC's can access it via something not completely in the GM's control. I seem to recall reading about an RPG system based around time travel sometime back.

I'm amused by the thought of Charles as a pet. XD

I think *which* history is covered in the game can also be important. As an example, I grew up in communist and post-communist East-Europe, so the history I learned in school vastly differs from the history that someone would learn in a North-American school. There are also significant differences in what is considered an important historical event or period across countries and cultures, so that might be another consideration in selecting your players.

Yeah, it's something I keep thinking about.

I'd like to play out games in which players tackle questions of moral consequences about historical periods, but the period is the current one or something like it.

(I've been tempted to do a time travel game where everyone travels back in time to the present from the dystopian future they're from and tries to save the world, but I don't know if I can set a game in the current timeline without the politics overwhelming it.)

Sliders and Quantum Leap are good examples of what I like. I've read a lot of French comic books--they call them 'bande dessinée' here in Quebec--that have a dimension hopping feel.

Maybe 'sliders' works better than time travel in that way.

What type of RPG invites engagement in discussion about the kind of world we want to build while not turning to entirely fantasy worlds?

I grew up in Canada and have always felt that the reason so many Canadian comedians become popular in the U.S. is because we grow up watching the U.S. from a critical (but close) distance. A lot of my cultural referents would be America.

That's another thing to watch for though -- setting games in real world settings brings up issues of stereotyping others. I lived in Korea 8 years and think I could create Korean characters who weren't stereotypical, but I'd be wary of setting a game in Korea, past or present, without thinking about possibly problematic representations.

I did play a time-travel game a few years back, using a system that was a hack of Blades in the Dark. We the players designed the world ourselves by answering a list of questions - fictional semi-dystopic setting where one character came from the future and knew that stuff would get much, much worse. They travel back to try and prevent it, enlisting the help of the other characters. It was very interesting and we were drawing parallels to the real world without getting into political arguments. But then again, we were a group who was pretty closely aligned in terms of values and where we sat on the political spectrum.

That sounds very interesting. Was the semi-dystopic setting in a future year or the current year? What kinds of things did you go back to change?

It was a near-future year, with VR/AR being more developed and prevalent. Our collaborative world building resulted in a semi-sentient, corrupted dream that used a specific song and people's dreams to draw them into itself. They would be still alive, but in a vegetative state while their mind was completely submerged in the dream. The press was serving corporate interests - all our characters were journalists, paid to write the spin our bosses wanted or needed to put on things. Climate change and the depletion of natural resources was also a thing, resource wars, exploitation and oppression. People resorted to escapism through drugs and/or VR.

The characters were in the vein of magical anime girls, with separate personas inside the "dream".

This is the system, we played the "In A Maze Of Dreams" variant.

If you were going to use it to play a non-pbp game, I'd recommend Feng Shui - the system is really easy to pick up and it has time travel built directly into the main plot.

Feng Shui does look interesting. I really need to look into some different RPGs.

I just saw the ending of the Umbrella Academy and ...

spoiler:
... I did a similar thing with a time travel game. The players, having eliminated the temporal interference in the past come back to find that, in the present, they had never left. (Why would they have? The temporal interference never happened.) It was fun while it lasted.

Thanks for the spoiler tag, which I am NOT peeking at! I’m only on S1, Ep.4—just getting into it!

Please use spoilers if any of you respond to further discuss Umbrella Academy!!!

I did find it funny the huge guy is named Luther, which I didn’t know when I came up with Flex Luthor.

I think the second season was better than the first. (And, explained a lot of the first, making the first better.)

You'll like the ending, I think.

We had friends over recently that said S1 is slow in the middle. Ep.4 was frustrating at the end. Klaus is such a useless prick. I hope Diego’s dead ex haunts him.

But that aside, I am into it, and will stick it out through S1 & 2.

Hoping it won’t end up like Black Sails or Westworld, both of which got too dark to enjoy at S3. (GoT had enough epic pay-offs that I cringed my way through villains like Ramsey Bolton and Pirate Guy Whose Name Escapes Me.)

I actually watched the first season of Umbrella Academy. I didn't know a second season was out (I cancelled my Netflix cause I realized I wasn't enjoying the content available, and they cancelled the marvel tv series, which was my reason for having netflix in the first place).

For me, Disney is the thing I didn’t want to keep. Baby Yoda is just… the Cabbage Patch Kid of the Star Wars universe. (I just made that phrase up now. It was the only thing I could come up without an adjective form of vomit.) My kids wanted to see Hamilton, and it was $5993 cheaper to see it on TV instead of on stage.

We have Amazon Prime, which was great until we finished Mrs. Maisel. Netflix just released S2 of Umbrella Academy last week. I get all my superhero shows on Netflix.

My daughters love the Flash and aren’t sick of Supergirl yet. I have mixed feelings: like the super power depictions, love the comic relief episodes, hate how often someone sacrifices his love life and actual life so the Flash can be happy, and think crossover episodes should only exist in Hell.

I stopped watching the CW superhero shows when it was just the flash and green arrow. I watched the pilot of Supergirl and when they mentioned that it was going to the CW, I just...had to quit.

Nice! Though, unless the GM says different, I’m gonna say Nissa failed the check. Her class was 20th Century Film, so any real-life film created after The Big Lebowski should not be known to her.

And Nissa better know The Big Lebowski.

I have yet to see The Expanse. ... I haven't exhausted everything on Canadian Netflix yet.

I fast forwarded things toward the island but there is space to retcon in conversations with the Marshall.

I have a whole bunch of stuff that Enyo told Theo about the Tarotverse while they were drinking that Theo may share with you all. I'll put it in the campaign info soon ...

Get a VPN Tarren. It's pretty dope for lots of reasons, including accessing netflix stuff from other regions.

@Nissa: There used to be a bar that would do Friday night showings of The Big Lebowski on their projector and sold white russians in the city I used to live in (which still might be going on, cause I haven't been there in almost a decade).

Oh, and this is Nissa’s player. Just thought I’d show that The Big Lebowski even inspired the name of a Col. Greer-level NPC.

Hey folks so this is Vrog Skyreaver/Verve. Sorry about the spam if we were in multiple games together.

Unfortunately, I have some bad news. I currently do not have access to my main account. I have opened a ticket to Paizo, but from the email I got back from them, it's not looking like I'll be able to access my account any time soon.

I would have posted sooner but I didn't even think about making an alt until now.

As it's not fair to everyone to make them wait, I'm going to withdraw from the game. If I get me account fixed and the game is still ongoing, I'll reach back out to see about joining.

Thank you for letting me play with you all, and I hope you all have a great game!

Okay, so, when I introduced the masked man and the bear, I was kind of playing with the characters developed by players in my World 12 PbP. I advanced their careers a little bit, but I liked their roleplaying and kind of kept them in mind for those NPCs.

Along with Vrog/Skyreaver, they were looking like they'd be the only ones left in that PbP. (Vrog was playing an android in that one and pretty much single-handedly saved the rest of the team's butts at one point when everything went haywire the way I'd intended.) As it turns out, the two players of those characters are actually the only ones left.

If you feel okay about a couple of new players joining, I'd like to invite them. They wouldn't necessarily be new characters though. Neither the bear nor the masked man gave you their names as I kind of thought this might happen.

Oh, cool! That would be awesome!

So are they supposed to be Bear Guy and Masked Man, like with the in-game history? (Not like I’ll quiz them, or be like, “how could you forget the Big Banana incident?” *runs upstairs crying*)

Yes. If they want to. I kind of kept things vague regarding Bear Guy and Masked Man's identities just for this reason. It seemed like it might end up with just them and Vrog left, but Vrog was already in this PbP, so I just used them for those NPCs basically. I didn't do either one justice, but the PCs are the heroes not the NPCs.

If they are interested and everyone here is comfortable, I'd brief them so they would be able to step into this game, giving names to Bear Guy and Masked Man.
