Trotter Male Halfling Venture-Captain 19

A young halfling wearing a leather jacket and fedora with a pistol on one hip and a whip on the other stands on a table at the front of a spacious room full of chairs, bookshelves, display cases with rare artifacts, a small bar, and several billiards tables.

"Welcome all to the Flaxseed Pathfinder Lodge!" the halfling announces. "Most of you may already know me or have read my work. I am of course Trotter Flaxseed of the noble Flaxseed clan," he takes a short bow before continuing, "author of several treatises on the lost city of Rachikan and indeed the first Pathfinder to descend into the lost city and make an extensive survey of its architecture and artifacts, head historian on ancient Azlanti scripts at the Arcanamirium in Absalom, lead archaeologist on the uncovering of the ruined city of Dokeran in the Mwangi Expanse, author of several articles in Pathfinder Chronicles 45, 62, 73, 85. . ." noting the bored looks of his audience, Trotter decides to move on.

"Well, anyways. . . I decided that after such a long and eventful career-that isn't quite over yet, mind you-to start up my own Lodge here in the city of my family's origin, Cassomir, so that I might pass on my knowledge and training to any agents who wish to stop in. So with the Decemvirate's graces I have opened up this lodge and with their continued graces I hope to serve as its Venture-Captain some day soon!"

Trotter takes another bow before finishing, "Now, make yourselves at home and enjoy the Lodge. I will be seeking out agents as missions come to me. Be sure to act cordially to your fellow Pathfinders and be mindful of the carpet. Thank you!"

Trotter steps down from his table, jaunting across the room to a large bookshelf from which he procures a dusty old tome. He sits down at a table and begins to study the book with a look of exaltation and wonder.

"Oh, you're going to Tian?" Trotter looks up from his book and lays aside his glasses. He jumps up from his chair and hops across the room towards a bookshelf, quickly scanning its contents. "Let me see, let me see. . . Ah! Here it is! On the Dietary Habits of the Ancient Natives of the Wall of Heaven! You may find this an interesting read on the way-especially chapters 4, 5, 8, 9, and 15, which were penned by yours truly!" He hands the book to the first person who looks vaguely willing to take it.

"Good luck Pathfinders! The Lodge will be waiting for you when you get back. I'm hoping to get some new agents here soon; perhaps someday we will rival the Heidmarch Manor in reverence as the most productive Lodge outside of the Grand Lodge in Absalom!" Trotter bounces back across the room and returns to his tome.

A young Pathfinder agent walks out from the office area with a note. He moves towards the halfling and hands him the letter. Trotter spends some minutes reading it over before announcing the Lodge, "It seems a veteran Pathfinder has begun sleepwalking, traveling through the dead of night in the same direction each time. Sheila Heidmarch would like some assistance to escort the sleepwalker to his destination and uncover the true nature of the strange phenomenon overtaking the man's dreams. Come see me for more details before you head out and remember to give Mrs. Heidmarch my regards."

I'm running 04-19 The Night March of Kalkamedes (1-5) if anyone is interested. The Discussion thread is open. I'll start once I get 4-6 players.

Also, does anyone know of any high-tier (7-11) games starting up? I've got a couple high tier characters that haven't seen action in a while.

Another messenger comes walking in to hand Trotter another note. "Eh-hem," Trotter begins to get everyone's attention as he stands atop his table.

"An active cell of the cult of Lissala—ancient goddess of runes and obedience—has been discovered in the Varisian town of Palin's Cove. I'm sending a group of Pathfinders to infiltrate their service and learn as much as they can. Come see me for details!"

Trotter flips over the paper he is holding, "Oh! It seems there's more!"

He reads quickly, his eyes widening. "Right here in Cassomir! It seems some Pathfinder and Aspis agents have gone missing in the Imperial Naval Shipyards. Come speak to me for more details!"

I'm planning to run the entire five-part Devil We Know series, beginning with 01-29 Part I: Shipyard Rats (1-7). Ideally I'm looking for four characters who have not played any of them before to go through all five together in succession. I'm leaving the last two seats open because I have had a few people interested in jumping in for later parts they have missed.

Having played it, I would not recommend it for a party of four first-level characters. We had a party of six first-level characters and had to run away during the second fight. Part of it was poor tactics on our part but other people on the boards have agreed that this one is best tackled above first level.

Let me know if you are interested. We'll get started once I have a party of four.

Tempting, with DM Beckett's Penumbral Accords on the last fight and the holidays coming up. When were you thinking of starting? If it'll be a few days I may have space. I've got L2 tower elf conjurer, L3 human fighter, L2 ranger/L1 transmuter half-elf (assuming he survives Penumbral Accords), and human L2 rogue/L3 urban ranger. Would probably prefer not to tie up the latter, though.

    The Notice:

    Pathfinders Wanted!

Hidden within the twisting paths of the Echo Wood lies the lawless settlement of Thornkeep. Here, the hardiest settlers and artisans ply their trades, ready to defend their own with blade or arrow; mercenaries and barbarians brawl in dismal taphouses, fueled by turbid moonshine and illicit backwater drugs; brigands and river pirates come to spend their bloody gold in unruly and dingy establishments; and monsters both benign and otherwise hide among the populace, eking out their debauched existences as they seek to inflict cruelties on their neighbors. Mercy, charity, trust—these virtues are in short supply in Thornkeep. It is a place where the bold and enterprising can make a fortune and perhaps even keep it—so long as they are strong enough to protect their wealth from the myriad dangers, both human and otherwise, that plague the town.

Beneath the weathered walls of Thornkeep lies an ancient maze of magic and madness. Once the workrooms and summoning chamber of a rebel Azlanti lord, these subterranean chambers were forgotten thousands of years ago after the eradication of the evil lord and his followers. Over the centuries, adventurers have found their way into these twisting passages and magnificent chambers, only to discover that the fading magic of the ancient Azlanti still lingers here. The people of Thornkeep call this dungeon the Halls Under the Hill, but those heroes who have dared its depths know this place by a different name: the Accursed Halls.

Rumors have recently reached the ears of the Pathfinder Society of something stirring within the Halls, and Baron Tervin Blackshield has given Pathfinders permission to explore the dangerous dungeons. All those brave enough to delve the Accursed Halls report to Aram Zey at the Grand Lodge in Absalom for further details.

DM Rah here! I'm running Thornkeep, Level 1 "The Accursed Halls." I'm looking for 4-6 dedicated players with 1st or 2nd level PCs willing to post 1-2 times per day. My hope is to complete it within a month. For the Discussion thread GO HERE.

Replay Note: All Tier 1 scenarios and Tier 1–2 sanctioned modules are available for unlimited replay with a 1st-level character for credit. The sanctioned modules may also be played with a 2nd-level character once for credit.

Anyone willing to run any of Emerald Spire for pfs credit? I have a 4th lvl character I'd like to see run in more of it.

I think we are at 6 already and we don't want to go to 7. I couldn't remember for sure so I thought I'd ask anyway.

    The Flaxseed Pathfinder Lodge

At the request of a few posters and to keep this campaign a little more organized, I am suggesting a few new guidelines to posters:

Gameplay: The gameplay thread is primarily for in-character chatter and should be kept in-character as much as possible. GMs who recruit through the gameplay are encouraged to do so in-character, but it is also recommended that Gms post in the recruitment thread as well, as some players do not like to wade through the in-character chatter to find recruitments (this is just a suggestion though).

Discussion: The discussion thread is for out-of-character chatter of any sort, be it rules discussions, advice, or even chatter unrelated to Pathfinder.

Recruitment: The recruitment thread is for GMs to find players for their games. This can be done in-character as in the gameplay thread but the chatter should be kept to a minimum, as some people will watch this thread only for the game announcements and do not want to sift through in-character chatter to find the announcement; that is what the gameplay thread is for.

All threads: When a GM links a signup on a spreadsheet, it is not necessary to respond with a post saying "I signed up!" This only clutters the threads and makes it hard for others to find the announcement. Furthermore, all discussion (in any of the threads, in-character or out-of-character) should be kept civil, respectful, and appropriate.

As usual, I will not strictly moderate any of the threads and no one will be punished for posting outside the guidelines (that's why they are guidelines and not rules). Just keep posting and have fun!

    Howdy party people!

I've got a bad case of "real life" going on at the moment, and it's proving problematic for my PBP GMing. Is there someone who'd be willing to take the reins on a Core Labyrinth of Hungry Ghosts (low-tier)? They're about halfway through. Please PM if interested.

I managed to have a page long, non-game conversation while not realizing I was in the IC thread. I retroactively apologize for cluttering your awesome thread!

Oh, don't worry about it! It wasn't just you, I think everyone has been guilty of that at some time or another. But I also didn't have any rules or even guidelines before. After a couple people mentioned that it was hard to follow the announcements in the Gameplay thread with all the other talk going on, I just thought it was time for some better organization.

I definitely like the idea, EndlessForms. That way folks can still have some fun in the Gameplay thread and we can easily keep an eye on the Recruitment thread without skimming through the other stuff. For instance, I'd hop on to check things out and see 15+ posts and wonder which awesome Recruitment I might have missed only to see it was just a good bit of roleplaying by folks.

I've updated my signup to fit more along the lines of Feral's in terms of the request section.

I can tell everyone right now that I can't match his pace as a GM. But once my current game finishes I'll consider the requests first when recruiting for my next game.

Ok, I want to be a good girl and follow the new guidelines, so I'm coming here to pick some brains on a character build that has been confounding me for some time.

I have an Oread character that I have yet to actually play and he will be level 2 the first time out. I won't say that I min/max, but I do like for my characters to have some good synergy in intent. I'm not likely to draw up another Oread any time soon (just the one boon) so I'm inclined to try to use one of the Oread racial archetypes...(Student of Stone Monk and Shaitan Binder Summoner) but to be honest, these archetypes seem to come with nerf built right in. =/

Monk seems like a good option, making good use of the Oread bonus to Strength and Wisdom. The potential Favored Class Bonus might be good if you were willing to forgo using a weapon most of the time. And Fast Movement would undercut the lousy 20 ft movement rate. But oh wait... you don't get fast movement as a Student of Stone. You get bonuses to avoid trip and bull rush maneuvers against you. -_- I don't see this being useful enough to negate fast movement. And then you also get your bonus feats spent for you on the Elemental Fist/Shaitan style chain. I know few things resist acid damage, but I haven't really seen these called out as especially useful monk feats.

Summoner archetype starts off badly by having no option to negate the -2 to Charisma penalty the way you can for an Oread sorcerer with the elemental (earth) bloodline. And then it goes on to make picks for you that again, seem like ineffective choices.

So am I wasting my time with these archetypes? I recently read over the retraining rules and have decided it's too expensive to bother with in PFS, so I need to make sure I have a viable build before I finalize my only Oread. I flirted with the idea of a Monk/Druid but then decided there aren't enough levels in PFS to make it work. Still like the Way of the Angry Bear, though. ^_^

So does anyone have some input to share? Should I just forget trying to find a good archetype and make him a straight monk? Shape-shifting druid perhaps? Or maybe a cleric with the earth domain? Something else I haven't considered? I need some help! I've been beating my head against this Oread wall for over a year now and it's time to get him ready for play.

From an optimization standpoint, you can make both archetypes work for you, but it's not really the greatest of choices. My advice is "If you want to do it that bad, just go ahead and do it and make it the best you can."

As an owner of a gnome ranger who focuses on strength, you definitely can still be effective. And the higher level you are, the less the incremental ability scores you started with matter.

To me, the big draw of the Shaitan Binder is that you can make an effective caster eidolon because of the free magic evolutions. I actually have a caster eidolon (Chained First Worlder Summoner: Skilled (Use Magic Device) and Skill Focus (Use Magic Device), and am planning on taking some of the magic evolutions and improve charisma). It has worked fantastically so far, but really what makes it is the Use Magic Device and the plethora of scrolls and wands I give it, not the evolutions. With Shaitan, you can expand on that even further, and Shield Ally and Greater Shield Ally aren't really needed.

Also, as a summoner, you can get by with 14-16 charisma starting out honestly. This is especially true if you try to focus more on buffing with your summoner than offense.

As for making a monk, I'm much better at offering advice for the casters. XD

    Hopefully my ramblings help lol.

    Silver Crusade

FYI, starting in August, you can make an Oread without a boon. Sylph, Ifrit, and Undine, too.

I don't really know much about oreads and their archetypes, so I can't really comment on that. But if you don't like them, I'd say don't use them. And that's coming from someone who made a sylph with a boon years ago that makes a point of using TONS of stuff from the sylph chapter of the ARG (Sky Druid archetype, racial feat, 4 of the racial spells, etc).

I've heard rumors that PFS might open up the elemental races for general play, so I've been thinking about how to build a PFS Oread as well.

Student of Stone doesn't seem so bad. It is not just a bonus to CMD: "So long as both he and his opponent are touching the ground, the student of stone gains a +1 bonus on attack rolls, damage rolls, bull rush and trip combat maneuver rolls, and to his CMD when resisting a bull rush or trip attempt." Of course, it would be more bearable if it scaled rather than just being a flat +1. Yeah, losing fast movement hurts, but you could offset the 20ft. speed with any of a variety of dips that would all mesh well with a Str/Wis build just fine (Barbarian, Inquisitor w/Travel Domain, Reliquarian Occultist w/Travel Domain, Cleric w/Travel Domain).

Similarly with the Shaitan Binder (can you use that archetype with the Unchained Summoner in PFS?) it doesn't seem too bad. +2 to an ability score and the ability to cast a variety of spells seems pretty good for not too many bad tradeoffs.

Your idea to play a straight monk is good. Unchained Oread Monk would be pretty good, since you could max strength and still have reasonable Wis, Dex, and Natural Armor to get a decent AC.

Way of the Angry Bear looks like a cool idea, and Oread seems like a great fit for it--possibly the best race in PFS for such a build, really.

My own thoughts are to go for one of the martial semi-caster classes that use Wisdom: Ranger, Warpriest, Inquisitor, or Hunter. Inquisitor, in particular, has a lot of really cool archetypes (Sanctified Slayer, Sacred Huntsmaster, Reliquarian...). I think Warpriest has some Monk-hybrid archetypes that would be a good fit as well; possibly better than a regular monk since you'd have Warpriest spells and the like.

Oh geez... I have to start reading the blog regularly. And stop sitting on my boons for so long, lol! Well gosh... maybe I should forget playing him just yet and wait until August and combine the oread boon with some others to get a suli. The Ifrit and Undine ones are probably going to be easy to trade for soon.

I traded to get my Second Wayang Boon just before Wayangs became freely legal. Imagine how I feel. :P

I wonder: Would anyone think it was worth anything if I tried to pawn them off now? Could I do that? Could I do that with the newer one but not the older one (I played the character I made with my older Wayang Boon quite some time before they were freely legal, but the charater I made with my second Wayang Boon I don't think saw play until AFTER they were freely legalized...).

Oooh, I'm not sure how that would work... the stuff on the Additional Resources is confusing. Under advanced Race Guide, which contains both of the racial archetypes for Oread:

Oreads: all alternate racial traits, favored class options, racial archetypes, racial equipment, feats, magic items, and spells are legal for play.

But then under the APG, it says:
As of 4/27/15 the summoner class in this book is no longer legal for play. A summoner character that has played at least once at level 2 or higher by this date qualfies to continue using this version of the class. Otherwise, only the summoner in Pathfinder RPG Pathfinder Unchained is legal for play.

Hard to be sure, but I don't think they would preclude each other. But I don't have the Unchained book. So does that mean I couldn't play a summoner at all?

Investigators are just plain fun. I have a level 11 Psychic Detective, and he is probably my favorite character ever to play.

    Silver Crusade

For my sylph, I went with the racial Sky Druid archetype, even though they don't get a wisdom bonus. Not the most optimized, but certainly not awful.

The archetype is pretty cool for a casting focused druid, flying out of range of enemies. I took the Cloud Gazer racial feat to see through clouds and Weather domain to get Obscuring Mist and Fog Cloud as domain spells. So I can hide in my clouds, casting at enemies who can't see me to fight back (or reach me once I'm flying). Doesn't work in enclosed spaces, since it would get in the way of my allies, but it works well in larger battlegrounds. I'm also using most of the sylph racial spells that go with the sky/weather theme (Windy Escape, Gusting Sphere, Wind Blades once I reach that level, etc).

Given the int bonus, I'd expect to see some sylph int based casters like wizards and witches. I know someone who has a sylph wizard already.

Based on what is coming up and the timings of the next GD I'd take a stab they will incorporate the new multi table special #8.00 Cosmic Captive.

The new special Serpents Ire has not had the requirements announced, though I'll its 4*+ like Serpents Rise . I couldn't even guess at the other special - Through the Maelstrom Rift.

So there are potentially THREE specials at the next GD, though as that isn't my baby I'm relying on guesswork.

The GD guys also use much more open mustering so it should be easy to get in on, we don't have the same resources they do so it kinda means we need to keep caps on things.

    Dark Archive

hmmm depending on when starting the Cosmic Captive I might join in as a player, that way I can possibly GM it here in NL (considering it, but not set in stone)

Serpent's Ire I am playing at PaizoCon UK this year in July. If needed be I can possibly GM here then after that...
