Okay, so this game is fundamentally a fantasy game about escapism, however this particular post is literally nothing but pure escapism.

For context, this post is coming from a place of me having an incredibly intense depressive episode because of the real life real world news, and wishing I were this larger-than life fantasy character in a magical world where I could actually do something about all the horrible s~~! going on in the world. It is coming from a place of intense frustration and mental anguish and is pure, distilled, undiluted escapism.

With that being said - if you could be a level 20 Pathfinder 1E Character, what race and class would you want to be - in addition (optionally), what traits/feats would you like to have?

Elf Divination Wizard.

If 3pp content is allowed, Elan Chaotic Wilder from Dreamscarred Press Psionics.

Half-Elf Mystic Theurge (shaman/sorcerer). I don't need 'unlimited cosmic power'. I'll take 'mostly unlimited cosmic power'. If I can tack on variant multiclass Paladin, I'd do so.

Can I be one of those dragons with shapeshifting abilities? :p Or was this purely about PC rules

(CR 20 monsters don't leave lot of choices left)

Spiritualist with the involutionist archetype and life spirit. My wife wouldn't be too keen on me turning into a wooden robot, so Shabti rather than wyrwood which would be my selfish choice. VMC sorcerer with the Vestige bloodline for a chunk of feats.

Tempted by summoner, and wizard, but I'm not sure how much of Pathfinder is following into the world with me.

I would have to pass on all things divine, as I am NOT a believer... nor am I willing to pray to anyone for anything. Monk isn't a bad choice, for me... not needing armor certainly helps, lots of useful features for being resistant or immune to everyday life, lots of choices of archetypes to trade away features that aren't particularly useful, lots of options for semi-magical powers, I've kinda been wanting to get into archery anyways...

Can I be a Strix? I don't care if I'm ugly [I'm already ugly], I could freaking fly! That would be neat. If not, I'd probably be a Half-Orc with Sacred Tattoos and Shaman's Apprentice... a luck bonus would be nice, as I have never been considered lucky... and having Endurance just built in would be nice. Darkvision would be pretty handy, as well. I really like Halflings, but I also like being able to reach the top shelf... being over six feet tall more than half my life has left me with certain expectations, and I just couldn't imagine not being able to reach things on the top shelf.

Not that I would ever play one IN a Pathfinder game, but being a Vigilante in real life could actually be relatively useful...

A gestalt of cleric and wizard could be useful. Get ALL the spells. It's a little MAD in terms of actual game play, but still handy.

Generalist wizard/loremaster. Throw in boon companion to up my little furry buddy's abilities. Maybe half elf to stretch my lifespan without being short or more frail.
And take Secret of Magical Discipline several times.

Human conjuration specialist wizard.

Human Bard. I would be a philanthropic Rock god who could heal the sick and injured.

I would have my name changed to Buckaroo Banzai.

It might depend on gear. If you are level 20, but have the same stuff you'd normally have on Earth, then it makes some choices significantly less good. Being a Wizard without a spellbook is pretty limited.

I'll keep it simple. Elven spellsage wizard. This will give me access to most of the spells in the game. As a spellsage wizard, I can spontaneously cast any spell on the bard, cleric, and druid spell list. The cost is 2 spell slots for 1 spell, and extra casting time. Usable a few times a day.

If I'm allowed extra features, I would also like to be an Archmage. I'd like to have crafting mastery ability and mythic crafter feat so I can make a lot of awesome stuff.

Also I'd like to be a gestalt wizard/psion (if allowed) for the variety of spells and powers, otherwise probably wizard/sorcerer (arcane bloodline). I'm tempted to go with wizard/monk (unchained) to get good hit points, saves, and monk defense ability, but such features don't aid me unless I'm in trouble. While tempting to be a cleric/wizard, I like being in control of my spells; having to pray for spells and having the risk of being cut off (if my deity isn't happy with me) doesn't help with that feeling.

I know I'm a Hobgoblin appreciator, however honestly I'd want to be a Human Crossblooded Aberrant/Maestro Bloodline Sorcerer. Pick up a few Impossible Bloodline powers with the Eldritch Heritage feat chain as well. The specific powers I'd get are Beguiling Voice, Fascinate, and Perfect Voice from the Maestro Bloodline, Alien Resistance and Aberrant Form from the Aberrant Bloodline, and Disorienting Touch, Distracting Pattern, and Relativity from the Impossible Bloodline.

I'd also want the Affable trait because Diplomacy is a good skill and I enjoy talking to people even though I am now a vessel for a hostile, invasive resonance based lifeform from another dimension.

This question is way too hard. How about a quad gestalt Bard, Druid, Shaman, Kineticist with one level of unchained monk to get the perfect gestalt BAB + karate?

I'm not trading down...

A druid with wild shape and polymorph self. Just think, you could have sex with absol... uh, sorry, I mean a paladin . Strong, powerful, noble and you have to be good looking and charming to a high degree. And because of your mandatory alignment you would be universally trusted and liked and you have to rescue damsels in distress. You would get so much puss .. sorry, sorry. Somebody else has been messing with my post honest. What I mean is you would be universally well liked and admired and have the opportunity to do so many good deeds.

Keep in mind, even a level 20 commoner would be a superhuman being capable of being famous the world over.

Personally, I'd be tempted to go with wizard or alchemist for the immortality.

You should probably just be a kitsune paladin with realistic likeness.

Really, a kitsune with realistic likeness is probably the easiest choice for any of our picks. You can seamlessly interact with anyone in the world, while being able to hide from surveillance. You don't have to be someone famous, just pick some moderate looking person off the street wherever you are.

I would be an oracle of the heavens. You get some interesting revelations. You are a 9th level caster with access to spells like Heal and Miracle. You are a CHA based character with both diplomacy and sense motive as a class skill, so you can get people to listen to you. I would go for human to start for the extra skills and favored class bonus. With the right spell selection, you can actually accomplish a lot of good.

The final reason is that you come back from the dead in a new body when you die. There are no restrictions on this except what is in resurrection. So, other than being turned into an undead or dying by a death effect you live forever. If you are killed right after you resurrect you still don’t die. Dying from old age also causes you to be reborn. You age normally so can actually live a fairly normal life, but can take advantage of immortality as well. You also come back as different races, so get to have a variety of different experiences to prevent it from being boring.

Liberty's Edge

A mindblade magus, because I've lost count of how many people I wish I could stab with my mind. I'm joking! (mostly...)

OTOH, Cassilda here (my magus) is a variant take on a character who's been living rent-free in my head for a couple decades now, and who is the kind of hero I'd want to be if I had "great power."

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Halfling cleric, just vanilla cleric, with the Community and Healing domains. If I have to be in a fight I'd focus some of my feats on optimizing the use of a halfling slingstaff, but I'd also include a feat to give myself a cat familiar; not an improved familiar, just a standard Tiny sized cat.

I'd give the cat the Valet archetype. I'd take an item creation feat, probably Scribe Scroll, and a couple different professions like scribe and tanner. Then I'd spend my time making books and paper, writing professionally, and handing out my healing to anyone that needs it.

More than anything I want to help rather than harm, but I'm not about pure pacifism and healing. Along those lines though, I want to deal non-lethal damage. There's no reason in this world to add more carnage than we already have.

Last but certainly not least, I like that gentle combination of Wisdom and Charisma; the ability to listen to people, understand them, and then communicate with them diplomatically to help them understand others and themselves. I may be naive and not cynical enough yet, but I still think there's merit in conversation, dialogue, and empathy.

And why a Halfling? The Hobbit has been my favorite book since I was 5 years old. Bilbo for me is the prototype for what I consider a hero; reluctant at first, but inspired by his own sense of wonder and curiosity in things greater than himself. On the road to adventure he's not the strongest or the fastest, not an action hero, but he's always there for his friends, when he's needed. Everyone counts him out, from the dwarves to the dragon, but this unlikely burglar is praised in the end by a dying Thorin for his wisdom and courage nonetheless.

Oh, and what did Bilbo take home from his adventures? The ring, of course, obviously, but what else? Just enough to be comfortable, nothing more. THAT'S the kind of person I want to be when I grow up.

Meanwhile I just pull girls by being severely autistic and a vessel for a hostile, invasive extradimensional resonance

We are amused.

I think I have found a like minded individual. That is to say one who has to keep their sense of humour in check on a site like this where young impressionable people may be reading.

I was definitely right.

We are still amused. The violins on TV sketch was great.

It's a tough question! Because of my love for the music of Ronnie James Dio, I would almost certainly be a Wizard (Universalist). By the same token, Michael Moorcock's "Elric Series" would make me a 20th level Bladebound Magus.

On a personal note, at my therapist's insistence, I had to stop following the news almost completely because it was making my progress almost nil. I'm so glad I did. I mostly just read science news articles now.

At CR 20 you could be an Ancient Gold or a Wyrm Bronze or Silver, for the dragons with Change Shape (in B1, anyway), and with the Bronze or Silver, you'd get access to 17th level Sorcerer casting (only 15th level with the Gold). Silver and Gold also get access to Cleric spells, which is gravy.

That would definitely be one of my choices, with 20 Elf Druid being the backup choice, for the age of the elf and the shapechanging of the druid. Want to fly, fly like an eagle, explore the depths of the ocean as a shark, etc.

a CR20 dragon, duh. Dragons are objectively the best.

It comes benefits of high level non prep castership, shapeshifting, long age without being immortal, physical abilities, hopefully lack of itchy skin, potential for class growth and ability to deal with every lower level threat in relatively pacifistic manner :p

I am already half of the way towards being a dwarven druid. Give me actual magical powers with animals and fire and I'd be set.

A level 20 character is CR 19. So, if allowing monsters, I’d think CR 19 would be the limit.

i'd go with a variant of my "Shenron, the wish granting dragon..oracle"

Elf (with the lightbringer alt racial ability)
traits: adopted(genie-kin) > minor wishcraft. 2nd open.
10 oracle (dragon mystery)\ 10 exalted (Nethys or some other deity with divine subdomain)

at level 20 sla\abilities include the following:
exalted level 10 'Perform miracle' (aka 'limited miracle') 1/day (no material costs). gained at level 15
miracle 1/day (sla, no material costs). - had from level 18
resurrection 1/day (sla, no material costs) had from level 14
limited wish 2/day (sla, no material costs) ('dragon magic' class ability retrained with elf's oracle favored class ability to get +1 effective level). - had 1/day at level 19, 2/day at 20th
and can use minor wishcraft to cast any level 0 spell as long as a humanoid wish for it (myself included),at will. (from level 1).

all this without counting other spells, sla (divine subdomain spells of levels 1,2,3,4,5,6,8), revolutions and boons.

Tough call here… I’d want to be one of three options…

1) Kitsune Nine-tailed Heir Sorceress of the Phoenix bloodline. Obviously with fox shape and grasping tail. Who wouldn’t want to be a cute little fox with magic powers and healing flames?

2) Catfolk Feral Huntress… maybe with VMC druid and Boon Companion… my inner furry desires this…

3) Gnome Oozemorph Shifter/Oozemaster Toxicant Alchemist gestalt with Psychic Bloodline Blood Arcanist… so what if I can only be humanoid for a few hours each day… I can live a quiet peaceful life and be super powerful…

That is hard to choose though a level 20 Monk(unchained), Kineticists, Oracle, Sorcerer, or CR20 Dragon.

That second one MUST get awarded the Ig Nobel prize in Physiology or Medicine.

Forget what I think would be the coolest, the power possessed by a 20th level full arcane caster is just nothing short of mind-blowing. We're talking about Wishes, travel to other planes of existence, and so on: an existence without constraints, where almost anything is possible.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Just make sure that you have a way to keep getting expensive diamonds to full the casting for that spell.

As long as you can get immortality (with your life remaining fully usable), you have time to solve the other problems, like the expense of the diamonds you need for casting Wishes.

Even a level 20 commoner is super human. You shouldn’t have that much trouble generating wealth. 20 ranks in any profession, perform, or craft would make you the best in the world at that specialization.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Divine spell casters don’t get Wish, but they do get Miracle which is nearly identical. The description of Miracle allows you to duplicate any cleric spell of 8th level, duplicate any other spell of 7th level, undo the harmful effects of certain spells, and have any effect whose power level is in line with the above effects. The top portion of the description of Wish is the same except it specifies the wizards list and has further restriction based on if you have opposition schools. Miracles also states it can have any effect whose power level is in line with the above effects. That would seem to indicate it can do what a wish can do.

Normal use of Miracle only has verbal and somatic components. The spell you are duplicating has an expensive material component you do have to provide that. If the Miracle is particularly powerful there is a 25,000 GP material component.

So, a divine caster with Miracle on their spells known is going to be able to do nearly anything an arcane caster can do with wish. They actually have an advantage that for a lot of things they can do it with no cost.

Combine this with the final revelation of the oracle of heavens and you are set. You can accomplish nearly anything you want. The only way to kill you is with a death effect or being turned into an undead. You can actually live a fairly normal life. You age at a normal rate but come back in a new body when you die.

It may be a bit vanilla but I would go with Human Wizard. Just a generalist Wizard, that would suit me if it somehow happened to be.

Immortality would be the worst form of punishment. "May you live forever" is an insult I save for those I truly hate.

... may you live with your mistakes forever... may you live with your loss forever... may you live long enough to watch all you love turn to dust... may you live long enough to give up on love... may you live long enough that everything that brings you joy dies...

May you live forever in a loveless, joyless eternity with an ever-growing memory filled with loss and regret...

Immortality is a curse, not a gift. Look at DC's Andrew Bennett (iVampire)... he is constantly looking for a way to end his own miserable life. He goes to such great lengths to kill himself, that he agrees to (and does) end the age of humanity... Dr. Fate gets there in time to witness it, but not stop it... a vampire so focused on ending their own immortality that he reset the cosmic clock, ushering in a completely new era for the whole universe.

Immortality surely leads one to the dark side... given a long enough timeline, immortals will eventually snap... the weight of their grief, the overwhelming boredom, the disappointment... nobody stays good forever.

{. . .}

I disagree with you on several grounds, but the one most relevant in this case is that I am already being punished -- I might as well get something for it.
