Paizo And Foundry Virtual Tabletop Content Partnership

Tuesday, April 5, 2022

Paizo is proud to announce that we have officially partnered with Foundry Gaming LLC to bring premium content to Foundry Virtual Tabletop. This new level of partnership represents the culmination of nearly a year of communal effort from Paizo, Foundry Virtual Tabletop, Sigil Entertainment Group, Syrinscape, and contributors from the FVTT Pathfinder Second Edition development community. We have heard the outpouring of support from the Foundry VTT userbase and are extremely excited to continue to work with the Foundry team to bring Pathfinder content to their platform in a way that emphasizes the quality of our respective products.

The first premium product to release as part of this partnership is the second edition Pathfinder Beginner Box, coming April 16. The release of the Beginner Box on Foundry VTT has been specifically timed to precede the community driven Beginner Box Day event occurring the weekend of April 23–24, 2022. Fans won’t have to wait long for more content as the debut volume of the Outlaws of Alkenstar Adventure Path, Punks in a Powder Keg, will be available simultaneously with the book’s retail release on April 27. Volumes two and three will follow as they hit store shelves in upcoming months.

Next month, the truly massive Abomination Vaults Adventure Path arrives as an all-inclusive deluxe module, coinciding with the release of the hardcover adventure compilation.

Among the many premier features players and GMs can expect in these premium offerings are:

  • Adventure and toolbox content converted to Journal Entries, each customized by hand to provide dynamic links to other documents and specific instructions for running the adventure using the automation features of Foundry Virtual Tabletop.
  • Scores of unique, high-resolution character and monster tokens.
  • Exclusive, highly detailed, and immersive adventure maps with support for Foundry Virtual Tabletop's Overhead Tiles and Foreground Layer features, re-created using assets from Forgotten Adventures.
  • Scenes pre-configured with walls, lights, sound, tokens, and hazards already placed to provide GMs the most convenient experience running the adventure.
  • Music, ambience, and sound effects provided using audio from the extensive Syrinscape library.
  • Script Macros that allow a GM to ease the effort needed to handle more complex encounters that await players.

We’re incredibly excited for the Pathfinder community to check this premier slate of products out on FoundryVTT and look forward to expanding our offerings as time goes on. We’d like to thank the passionate volunteers who laid the groundwork for Pathfinder Second Edition content on Foundry, without whom we’d have had a much steeper climb to bring these projects to fruition. Special thanks are due to developer FryGuy, whose PF2e PDF to Foundry module has provided countless GMs with adventure importing and formatting services in the absence of official FoundryVTT support before now. Internally, this partnership has had no greater champion than Andrew White, who was among the first in the company to point out FoundryVTT’s meteoric rise in the virtual tabletop landscape and has spearheaded coordination between Paizo and the various teams working on these releases. Thank you all!

Now, let’s get to playing some Pathfinder Second Edition on Foundry Virtual Tabletop!

So this is kind of a big one then that should probably be asked. The PDF to Foundry module worked off of purchased PDF's. Can we anticipate some support to those of us who have used this route to help create our games? And being as the Beginner's Box is very common in the Humble Bundles, will there be future support for that?

Aw, hell yeah!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!

In the blog there is a teaser for a beginner box product that will be released.

Huge news! Semi-related: I just started porting my own Pathfinder 2e books from Pathfinder Infinite into Foundry yesterday!

werfhjnoiehuwoqtg HECK YES! So excited, and seems like y'all've done a good job of adding extra value as well!

Wayfinders

Excellent news! Foundry is, IMHO, the single greatest way to play and run PF2 currently, so to see the official recognition and partnership is wonderful to hear.

Amazing! I'm 100% buying Outlaws of Alkenstar on release!

This is so so so exciting - I'd love more info on how much the modules will cost or if it'll work similar to pdf to foundry where we'll just need an official pdf to get access to it?

Great news!!!

Ownership of a PDF associated with a premium Foundry VTT module will result in a discount on the module purchase price. So if you have the Beginner Box PDF, either from a prior purchase or a Humble Bundle, you'll have that amount deducted from the price of the module when it comes out.

Conversely, if you don't own the PDF, you'll get that as a bonus when buying the module.

Users who bought the PDF will get a discount for getting the module, and users who purchase the module will get the PDF alongside it for free!

There is an FAQ about this announcement on the Foundry website (should be more prominent in the announcement).

Yes! High-res maps and tokens, sounds, linked journal entries? Fantastic!

Edit: The discount on previously owned PDFs and getting those PDFs as part of the module is excellent news! Thank you!

What will happen to PDF to Foundry now? It would be a shame if this partnership just results in the commoditization of something that was previously a free community resource. (Assuming you own a legal PDF)

This is the first time in months that I check the Blog for the APG errata and don't spend the rest of the day disappointed.

As Mark said, if you already own the PDF version of a Foundry product (such as the Beginner Box), the cost of the PDF will be deducted from your purchase price of the Foundry VTT version automatically.

If you're already running a game using a PDF converted via PDF to Foundry and want to take advantage of all the new features that come with our official conversion, you may have a few minor cleanup tasks on your hands, but for the most part you should be able to activate the module, import all of the new compendium content, and pick up more or less where you left off.

I looked at the FAQ. And, IMHO, it appears it was missing a question that I'm curious about. Will there be a 'subscription' for future Foundry VTT Adventures?

The creator of PDF to Foundry, FryGuy, announced a few days ago that they were not going to be continuing their work for future APs, as the amount of work was simply too much to continue long-term and it was never supposed to last this long in the first place. In this regard the timing couldn't be better.

Edit: The full announcement of that is here.

This is wonderful news. Foundry has allowed my gaming group keep playing throughout the events of the last few years, and definitely was vital in keeping some of us sane through the isolation. Really happy to see Paizo taking full advantage of the tools and opportunities Foundry provides, and working with the amazing volunteers that have worked their asses off to make the Foundry PF2 system as good as it is.

Fryguy, the developer, in the most recent update announced he will no longer be adding things to the module, but will continue to do bug fixes and whatnot to ensure that what's already available continues working. (He announced this prior to this announcement.)

I believe the author of that module (fryguy) announced that Quest for the Frozen Flame was the last AP that was going to be supported by PDF2Foundry and there would be no further updates to it.

My question is will this change any of the community resources available for PF2 on Foundry? Will I still be able to use all the OGL content as created by the community or will we have to purchase open content to use it?

Edit: Ninja'd by several others!

Does This Mean I’ll Need to Buy The Bestiaries Again To Use the Bestiary Monsters?

The data for the bestiary monsters is covered under the Community Use Policy (and our agreement with Paizo) and are available for free as part of the Pathfinder Second Edition game system. We think this level of supported content in the free system brings a lot of players to the community, and we see no reason to change that.

We know there are a lot of dedicated GMs and Players out there with shelves full of Pathfinder books who don’t want to re-purchase content they already own. The simplest answer to this question is: you will not need to pay to access anything that the PF2e game system currently includes for free. Our focus will remain on giving other reasons to buy our products by offering a way to experience that content that isn’t available anywhere else.

PDF to Foundry is no longer being updated with new APs. Frozen Flame was the last one. The decision to end support for it was Fryguy's, he was spending ~30 hours a month doing the work on it and spoiled every AP, adventure, and society scenario in the process. He was going to retire PDF to Foundry earlier but when we got word that Outlaws of Alkenstar would be the first premium module he pushed on to close the content gap. There is nothing preventing someone else from stepping up and making a similar program, but they would have to start from scratch as his code is closed source and he won't be releasing it to help reduce piracy. He could decide to add future content into the module again, but given that these modules are beyond anything the importer could ever do it's unlikely to be revived. Nothing in the module as it currently is will be going away. All the APs up through Frozen Flame will be importable as normal.

I will be buying Abomination Vaults and Punks in the Powderkeg as soon as they are out. Probably the Beginner Box too, but those 2 are must haves.

Edgecase that I was curious about will items still in development but not released also get the Foundry treatment? One example I was thinking of that comes to mind is the converted Kingmaker AP? Understandable it’s massive so it may not get inputted but having it in foundry would be invaluable to running it, (and my sanity).

Interested in Kingmaker as well since it's basically my next AP after Quest for the Frozen Flame.

This is awesome news! Only thing I'm disappointed by is that I'm currently running both Extinction Curse and Fists of the Ruby Phoenix and would love some of the extras here (like the ambient sound and fancy maps), but they're not available for purchase yet.

And I 100% understand that. It's impossible to do everything at once, and it makes total sense to focus on the new stuff coming out. When I run one of those, I'm really excited by this.

I do hope the other 2e APs get the same treatment at some point, though. :)

Extremely excited for this! The images look fantastic and the work of the people who create the PF2E system in Foundry is just head and shoulders above the rest.

PERFECT timing for us! We are about to finish Age of Ashes and made the decision last month to move from Roll20 to Foundry AND to go back to new 1st level characters with Beginner Box, Otari, and AV!!! Woot Woot!

Wondering how all this will connect with the Nexus?

Any plans for Starfinder APs?

Wow. The future is here. The future is Paizo. You, sirs, are gods among men.

P.S. This is exactly what I asked James Jacobs for in his thread a few months back: https://paizo.com/threads/rzs2l7ns&page=1645?Ask-James-Jacobs-ALL-your- Questions-Here#82230

P.P.S. The next step is Owlcat-level production values.

P.P.P.S. And the next step is Cyberpunk 2077-level. Whoever does that wins the entire artform of videogames.

For those of us who have the Adventure Path subscription, what would the extra "bonus Foundry VTT" content end up costing?

Will there be a subsequent add-on subscription so we can likewise get the Foundry packages?

According to the Foundry VTT FAQ, while they would want to eventually have Starfinder and PF1E included as well, right now they're focusing on PF2E into the foreseeable future.

Sad, but hey! More reason to keep discussing and asking for it!

EDIT: The link to the Foundry VTT FAQ found HERE. The part about the Starfinder/PF1E content is near the bottom.

Hopefully all of the previous APs will be added as time permits, and that the addition of non-AP content, such as rulebooks, will continue without much hassle.
