If you’re not deriving a mechanical benefit from it, treat it like veneration.
“My name is Talea Torv, and I am a follower of Aroden. Yes, I know he’s dead. Others have come back from the dead. Why not him?”
Talea is my Ustalavic Scarab Sage character who venerates Aroden and is interested in many of the philosophic tenets of the Esoteric Order of the Palatine Eye. Her former boss was a member, and she’s considering joining once she’s had a chance to learn more about ancient Osirioni ruins and cultures. (Although she is an Arodenite, no way is she getting involved with the Harbingers of Fate — mainly because their history with the Society makes them Nut Jobs.)
At any rate... You can pretty much “venerate” whatever you want. You can only “worship” PFS legal options.

"Cirri, You two are not alone...."
Staff Magus, still early in her career though

I have literally only played with one Magus in my entire PFS career and he used a whip and specialized in Disarming and delivering spells from 15 ft away.

I have played with one SwashMagus who was completely shut down by something that had resistance to cold and electricity. It was... interesting to watch the player's reaction, to say the least.
If you're going to overspecialize like that, that's simply logical consequences.
That's why I railed against all the 'optimization' rhetoric for years; people wound up acting like there was one, objectively best way to do anything, dumping on anybody who didn't think like they did, and blaming the game if it somehow managed to sink their little Titanics.

GM Andrew |

Yeah but a magus who is level 4 and above doesn't need to have literally every spell be the FotM damage spells. Being a prepared caster, having other spells in their repertoire can totally turn situations like that around.
And if they're level 3 or below, they hopefully can do enough damage without spells anyway.
(From having played my magus and actually casting other spells, while still keeping a couple shocking/intensified shocking grasps in his memorized spells for the situations where that is best)

To which I will respond by positing that if there IS an option that seems to keep revealing itself to be "the best", then perhaps more options are needed!

OKAY. I urgently need help from someone familiar with #6-04: "The Beacon Below"!

![]() |

Bardu is around if they sided with the elementals, and Saruna if they sided with the mummies. But the one they sided with typically tries to talk to them back in A2. In my current run of this, they didn't side with anyone so started the conversations with both a little on the back hoof.

GM Socrates |

I'm preparing to run a scenario (haven't decided which one yet!) for some friends of mine that are both
A) new to Pathfinder
B) new to PbP
They're all smart people that can figure it out, but I want to give them the best introduction that I can given that I probably won't be there to help them create their characters... Although maybe I *could* have them all over for a night to do just that.
Anyway, assuming I don't, do any of y'all have any tips on how best to introduce them? Dump them into the "getting started" part of the PRD and send them the PbP Character template and the PFS guild guide? Let them look over my core Rulebook .PDF? Anything else?

GM Socrates. Have you seen the Pathfinder Strategy guide. It is quite good for new players. It only covers core classes and no archetypes but it does have a brief quiz to direct you to a class that fits what you want to play and lays out suggested race, feats etc.

When I'm running a game for new PbP players, I usually start my thread with some variant of this post, that way they can reference it easily if they forget the formatting conventions.

That is exactly what I wanted! It even came in one of the Paizo Humble Bundles that I bought awhile back. Perfect. Thanks letsuna.
I am, of course, still welcome to additional suggestions!

GM Andrew |

I admit I am not familiar with the Magus class, but wouldn't it be a good idea for one to take the Elemental Spell feat to have a variety of spell damage options available instead of just elec/cold?
With my magus, I use Corrupting Touch for acid, and Scorching Ray with the Close Range arcana. No need for the feats in my opinion.

Socrates, good luck with your new game. I think the following thread/guides are great introductions for new PbP players.
Pathfinder Society Role Playing Guild Guide
10 Questions that will make your PFS roleplaying blossom. An excellent post by KestlerGunner designed to help flesh out your PFS character.
Building a Better Doomed Hero: Painlord’s Advanced Play-by-Post Play. My go to guide on how to play play-by-post games in PFS.

Fantastic! That middle one is something I have been thinking I should flesh out for my own characters as well.

Still need help....
But the one they sided with typically tries to talk to them back in A2.
A2? The cramped, fog-choked hallway that neither of them are ever mentioned as being in? How can that be? While we're on the subject, what's the deal with the scrolls that award Preservation Points? Common sense (which is a surprisingly useful mainstay implement to a DM) says that as long as the magical fog is there, it should be an impediment to finding those scrolls.
Bardu is around if they sided with the elementals, and Saruna if they sided with the mummies.
The adventure writeup doesn't say that, though; Saruna is where she belongs (A3), but Bardu starts out on the next floor down.
In my current run of this, they didn't side with anyone so started the conversations with both a little on the back hoof.
What do you mean? Did you demote their initial attitude category? That could be a serious problem in higher-Tier games (which mine is not, mind you). Also, as little sense as it makes, the scenario does seem to assume that there is one "winner"; what exactly are you saying I have them do if that's not the case?

I would like to try out a shifter now that they are legal!
I’m glad to hear that. The PFS forums are all doom and gloom about how no one will want to start new characters now. Since I have at least one new character that I will be starting, I am glad to hear that!
(I need to make something vaguely dragon-themed with a future draconic familiar. Just not sure what.)
Do y’all have suggestions for me for something fun and charismatic?
Hmm

Skald into Dragon Disciple is something on my 'future PC' list. Probably a nagaji, since it fits both the draconic/reptilian aspect as well as the racial stat boosts. You could get a familiar via Eldritch Heritage.
Eldritch Scion magus is another option - they get a bloodline (sort of) and can take the Familiar magus arcana.

I have fallen head over heels in love with Oloch, the iconic warpriest. I want to make my own half-orc warpriest so after outpost I am super keen to get something going.

Anyone up for a rotating GM quest? Maybe Silverhex, although I am fine with any of the others. We could GM one quest and play the others. I shouldn't be too onerous and we can set it up and start when Outpost finishes.

After Outpost? I'd be up for this.

Arcanist (Brown-Fur Transmuter, Spell Specialist, Unlettered Arcanist).
Improved familiar for Pseudodragon.Qualifies for Dragon Disciple.
At Arc 5/ DD 3. You cast lvl 4 Witch Spells. Share Shape works like Beast Shape 2 for your familiar's type which is Dragon. Large Dragon with a stat bump? Enlarged with Iron Skin?
Seems like that all works.

I'm continually having more character ideas, and lately I have had several for CORE. But I am trying to resolve to *finish* more of my current ideas before starting any more.
Does anyone have an idea of how much xp is available in PFS? And will be by the time PF1 scenarios stop coming out?

I think I would be interested in that, though it would be my first GM in a PPB scenario. I haven't played any of the silver hex so that would be fun for me as well.

![]() |

Ok, so looks like there is a little interest. If you are interested in a quest series with rotating GM I have made a recruitment post here .
Thinking we can gather interest now and kick off when Outpost is done and people have a little more bandwidth.

“My name is Talea Torv, and I am a follower of Aroden. Yes, I know he’s dead. Others have come back from the dead. Why not him?”
"I am sure you are mistaken. I am a paladin of Aroden, and he quite clearly grants me his power. Those that believe he is dead just don't have enough faith." says Lady Natalia. (who is, in reality, a battle oracle.)

So I haven't yet reported my "Beacon Below" game - is that typically done when the game begins, or when it's concluded? How long do I have left to do it without any penalties or missed opportunities or whatever?

It is typically done when you finish the scenario, or when the convention ends on April 30th. You have five weeks yet before you have to worry.
Hmm

I think I may need to call in a ringer for my "Beacon Below" game; I've tried, but I'm not sure I can keep up.
Will I still get DM credit and whatnot? I've been at it for a few weeks, and I can still do Chronicles when the time comes. I think I'm 1 DM credit away from my first Star....

![]() |

Just take it slightly slower. Tell the players you can only do updates once a day or once every couple of days. Sometimes you get a group that is full of rapid posters, and then just limit yourself.

GM Hmm |

Is it the posting rate, or the scenario complexity that is causing issues, Closet? If you feel completely underwater, there’s no shame in stepping down. We’ve all done it for various reasons — heck, I had to drop a campaign when I became VC. But if you like the game and want to continue, maybe we can find you a mentor or mentors that you can consult when you get stuck.
What do you want to do?
Hmm

I am in the home stretch of two of my three GM slots at the moment Closet, and I have run that particular adventure once before and just saw it ran Saturday at a con.
Willing to coach you through it if you're still struggling too hard or taking the game on if you really need to completely tap out.
But I just checked in on your game and regarding the dilemma they now currently face...
The party probably needs to explain more of what THEIR goals are, for the plot to begin to make any sense to them so the two can respond. These two both know HOW to get past the golems and both know about the ritual to create a flawed sage jewel but your players didn't give them much reason to talk about it.
I definitely would not have structured it as one big conversation the way you have, because if they had gotten to explore a bit more of the dungeon they would have a better understanding of the situation and the necessity of the choice at hand. It will save time if you can get the plot conveyed though.
The gist is this - they need to construct a flawed sage jewel to get into the library where both Badru and Saruna believe the Amethyst Sage to be/where the beacon is probably originating since it is locked down in such a way that it can only be opened by a sage. There are only two acceptable jewels in this dungeon for that purpose, the jewel serving as Saruna's heart and the jewel serving to animate Badru.
The party will have to decide which servant they would rather kill which will cause a big fight to break out at the end of which they will probably possess the means they need to get a Sage Jewel made. They may not yet quite understand the necessity of this, so I would allow them to walk away from this conversation (and for Badru to retreat to his workshop) so they can find out that a) they need to be able to prove they are Jeweled Sages to the glass golems and b) knowing that, that the only way to really do that is to kill one or the other and to take their heart so they can make the flawed sage jewel.
Hope this helps
