For years the dreams had come. Maddening dreams. Dreams of fire and molten rock. Mountains of great wealth buried in the heart of the earth. Dreams of terrible, forgotten beasts lost in the deep. Dreams of legend and glory, of sweat and toil.

For months, Tobul the Afflicted, Half-Mad prophet of the Forge-Fire, petitioned the Gathering Council of Highhelm to hear his plea. The lost Axe of the Dwarvish Lords called to him. For ages it had gone missing, and most had relegated it to the ashbins of history and lore, but Tobul knew, it wanted to be found.

For months he had been denied, laughed at and ridiculed, but today, he had received his summons.

=:Campaign Summary:=
//^\\//^\\//^\\//^\\//^\\//^\\//^\\

Ages ago, the Rending of Droskar’s Crag destroyed the twin cities of Jernashall and Raseri Kanton, shattering the great dwarven empire of Tar Khadurrm and plummeting the Five Kings dwarves into an age of decline and apathy. Now, secretly, the Gathering Council of Highhelm have recruited an expedition of seven dwarves to reclaim Droskar’s Crag and redeem the glory of all of Dwarvenkind.

This is a kingdom building campaign inspired by the epic stories that are generated within the game Dwarf Fortress. Early levels will be wilderness survival and hex exploration until the party finds a suitable site to settle. Midlevels, the campaign will shift its focus moreso to kingdom management, defense, and reaching the heart of the great volcano. After that, the campaign will focus more on subterranean hex exploration and dungeon delving, all the while dealing with political forces on the surface. Overall, I wish for the campaign to be open-ended and player driven, with the overarching goal of reclaiming the glories of Jernashall and the truth behind the Axe of the Dwarvish Lords. Expect goblin baby snatchers, orcish incursions, elven caravans, human mercenaries, badger tornadoes, catsplosions, giant eagles, nobles, kobolds, dragons, and the unspeakable horrorterrors of the underdark and beyond.

Gameplay will be PbP on these here forums.

=:Recruitment Rules:=
//^\\//^\\//^\\//^\\//^\\//^\\//^\\

This recruitment will run a bit differently. As of right now, I am not interested in character builds. I am interested in you, the player. I want players who are able to commit to a long term, open-ended campaign. I want players who can agree to try with extreme effort to post at least once a day. I want players who love roleplay and can take it upon themselves to play through down-time segments. What I love most about these games we play is character interaction, watching relationships build and develop. Of course we’re gonna slay us some monsters and loot us some treasure, but what is kingdom building without personal agendas, inter-political strife, vendettas, and the like?

So, for your recruitment post, tell me about yourself, your history with gaming, your availability, your place in time and space and life, why you want to play THIS campaign SO BADLY, etc. Experience playing Dwarf Fortress is a plus, but not necessary.

There are seven spots. Once players are selected, we can do all the session zero stuff and work together on character builds, backstories, character motivations, and party balance. We can discuss optional rules, houserules, PbP etiquette, and the shape and form of the campaign. The campaign is still in rough draft mode, so there’s still work for me to do, but doing all the session zero stuff with you will give me the time and space to do it, as well as help clarify direction. With an open-ended campaign, I hope we can explore many gameplay styles.

Recruitment will close Monday June 18th.

//^\\//^\\//^\\//^\\//^\\//^\\//^\\

I am 35 years of age. Mountain Time Zone. I am two steps away from finishing a Masters of Art Therapy and Counseling program, so I’m somewhat in a transition state. I started gaming when I was in middle school, AD&D, and returned to the hobby a couple of years ago. I’ve fallen in love with Pathfinder, and I have no current inclination to grow into PF2. Currently I’m playing in one (maybe two) PbP games, and GMing another. For me, that’s enough. I’m excited to GM one more game, but I think that just about fills my plate. Please check out my other campaign to get a sense of my style. I make my own battlemaps.

Dotting. If we end up selected by the 18th, is it okay to take a couple days for the crunch? I’m just back home at the 19th. Thanks :)

Definitely dotting, for sure.

About Me:

I am currently moving from the Central time zone to Mountain. I have an undergraduate degree in English, and a graduate degree in Education.

Love Pathfinder, and got into play-by-post when I moved away from New York and lost all of my weekly in-person games (about 3 years ago). I like the do-it-on-your-own-schedule aspect, and really enjoy the writing. I am a very regular poster. I guess my weakness in gaming is that I have a rebellious streak, so if I feel manipulated into something I tend to go the other direction, but maybe in this case, the rebellious streak will be perfect for my dwarf. :)

I honestly don't know anything about Dwarf Fortress, but I like the idea of kingdom building, and every Kingmaker game I have been in has fizzled, so I am still waiting for a taste. Have played with the DM before, so pretty sure that we will get along, and am also curious to play a dwarf and to find out what "catplosions" we are looking forward to. :)

That said, I am in a bunch of games, so if nine billion people apply, it won't kill me to not play... it just looks fun, so I am in to jump in and have fun if there is a spot open. I even promise to read up on Dwarf Fortress so I have a better idea what we're talking about.

Silver Crusade

About me:

I'm an Ex-pat Brit living in Toronto, Canada. I'm a now partly retired Computer Programmer sort (I'm working for a Not for Profit company part time).

An old fart, I've been playing role - playing games before you were born :-). I started with the original White Box D&D in 1978 and have played probably literally (and by literally I DO mean literally, NOT figuratively :-)) over 100 different games since then (depending largely upon how one counts different versions of a game).I haven't played continuously since 1978 but for most of that time it has been my primary hobby.

My favourite part of role-playing games is definitely the role-playing aspects although I also enjoy the problem solving bits and war gaming as well.

I am currently playing in a King maker campaign. One thing that we realized very, very early on is that those rules only work if you do NOT try to mini-max them too much, rather building the things that you think your characters WOULD actually build. So, as a cleric of Erastil I've been constantly pushing for more farms, the snobby Elven wizard has pretty much declared one city "his", etc.

I've never played Dwarven Fortress but I love the idea of playing a group that is all one race with a very clearly defined goal. Dwarves are a great choice for that kind of campaign. They're versatile and inherently have enough personality to be fun. The race also supports LOTS of different character types so I'd be surprised if the group suffers from the "cookie cutter" problem. I also quite like Kingmaker (with the above caveat against mini-maxing. It would totally suck if the group tried to mini-max too much). Everything you said above about the campaign seems like it is aimed directly at me :-)

I'm currently in several PBP games but, as always, some are more active than others. I check in to all the games at least once a day (with obvious rare exceptions like being in hospital :-)) and will post daily as long as there is something to react to. Although I HAVE left 2 PBP campaigns when they just weren't working for me I've NEVER just quit them without notice, always making sure to leave when it was both convenient AND telling the GM that I was going.

There’s a lot to cover, and so I think the session zero might last at least a week? At the very least, we won’t rush it, so we won’t begin gameplay until everyone and everything is ready.

I'm a thirty year old man from Arkansas, in the USA (CST). I've been gaming in some form all my adult life and then some, though I've only been involved in Pathfinder for 3-4 years, during most of which I've been playing PBP on this site. That actually the only way I have to play right now, I live in a pretty rural area, and the nearest physical gaming group I know of is 45+ minutes drive away. I'm in the transition between jobs right now, I start part-time with the TSA next month, but should still be available pretty often. I also do some intermittent stuff like soccer refereeing and substitute teaching (though not right now, as it's summer, obviously). I've never played Dwarf Fortress, but I have tried to play in several Kingmaker games, but they keep dying right out of the gate. Between that and that I really enjoy dwarves in general, this game sounds very interesting to me. That and I've got a character concept I want to find a home for that I think would work particularly well for a dwarf.

The Dwarf Fortress Wiki for the uninitiated. Careful, it's complicated.

Further fyi, in DF, your fortress can take on all sorts of domesticable animals, such as cats. You can mark individual animals as adoptable, and a dwarf with a preference for that animal will adopt it. An adopted animal cannot be slaughtered. Cats, however, work slightly differently. They adopt dwarves. So, if you have just one dwarf with a preference for cats, cats will start to adopt that dwarf. If you end up with a mating pair, the number of cats in your fortress will explode exponentially. This is a catsplosion. Sadly, this feature is no longer an issue in the current version, now that gelding is a thing.

Liberty's Edge

'bout me:
I've been a PBPer for several years, albeit with a considerable break to allow me to finish college, get my life in order and deal with things. I wasn't proud of my choice to quit the boards cold turkey and I made more than a couple people very sad with my decision, but it had to be done. I couldn't keep failing at college.

I've only recently dived back in, realizing I kinda missed this. I have a serious case of alt-itis, as my profile page will likely attest; every level of alias from the blank and unfluffed to the not-quite-novella length backstory is there, with all sorts of fun concepts and builds to round them out. Yet there are still so many I haven't tried...

'bout me as a gamer:
I came to love PBP RP on the heels of my time in Champions Online, an MMO that, to be honest, is in a pretty sad state even now; it was with my supergroup, however, that I discovered a fascination with a different kind of RP I hadn't experienced before. I developed character personalities that previously had been naught but vapor into powerfully compelling personas (or at least, that was the impression I got from those around me.)

When it comes to gaming, I'm a connoisseur. There are far too many wonderful experiences out there to confine myself to one kind of game. I've quite literally grown up with the video game industry; I was born in '82 and got my first NES when I was about 6, so yeah. You could say games are a childhood companion of mine...and yes, I've played my share of RPG's. Some I'd gladly play once more, some I'll never touch again.

when and where?:
I live in southeast Texas right now, so central standard time for me. I'm in between jobs and moves at the moment, so my schedule is more free than it should be (peeps keep giving away my jobs right before I can close the freaking deal...) I'm hoping to fix that if I land a job in Colorado, but time will tell.

Why do I want to play THIS game?:
Well, as with anything I decide I want to do, it simply struck me. I don't always go by a set of qualifications or criteria to pick my interests; sometimes I see something that just jumps out at me the right way. It may be partly because I still lament the untimely demise of the last all-Dwarf game I was in and still want my shot; it could be just the way it was presented as analogous to a style of game that interests me (city-building, kingdom management, defense games, etc etc.) that just struck a chord somehow. I do know that your proposition of communal character building appeals to me. Making characters together does WONDERS for party cohesion and communication.

While I've never played Dwarf Fortress specifically, I have played similar games. Lately I've actually been playing a little indie title called Rise to Ruins; I'm told by DF players it's very similar, though INFINITELY easier to comprehend and perceive due to having actual rudimentary visuals and working tooltips.

That said, I think this will be quite a ride, one way or another. I've no idea what sort of Dwarf I want to play yet, since I have no desire to rebuild my other one for the game; I prefer to preserve her, just on the infinitesimal chance that the old GM decides to necro the campaign.

Who am I?

That is an incredibly deep and philosophical question. No one ever asks -why- am I though. I'm a dude in my late twenties, moving on to my thirties in just a year or so. I'm a gigantic nerd of all things, though tabletop roleplaying games are my absolute favorite addiction that I happily entreat. I enjoy long walks on the beach, appletinis are delicious, and I'm a Cancer. <3

Who am I as a gamer?

I originally started playing tabletop games when I was in my senior year of high school with a bizarre game of World of Darkness that was nothing like World of Darkness. I've been playing a slew of various systems for over a decade now and it easily my favorite hobby and activity in the world and I will likely continue to do it until I'm dead.

The act of storytelling (and doing it cooperatively) is one of the most fun things I can imagine doing and the memories made from these stories last a lifetime. While I've been playing videogames since I can remember, nothing can equate to tabletop gaming.

When can I do the gaming?

I am currently unemployed (working on that) so I am available way more than I should be. Usually though, with most jobs, I'll be available in the evenings and late night hours here in Texas. Central Time Zone is my time zone. Even if I have an engagement to do, I am very vocal about it and will do my best to try and get a post in to keep the fiction alive and moving.

Why I want to be in this game?

Not to nerd out but have you listened to "Misty Mountains" being sung by deep voices!? If that doesn't make you pumped to play a bunch of dwarves aiming to reclaim their homeland or their heritage, I don't know what will.

Seriously though, I have always loved the idea of themed parties and the stories that it could create and this idea is an amazing classic. Add in the fact that I was the weird guy who really enjoyed calculating all the small details that would come from running a town/kingdom/stronghold and this game is an absolute fit for one of my cravings. I would love to play in this game and see what kind of mighty tale of dwarven heroes that we could create. Hopefully, my enthusiasm for this will be enough to be selected. Thank you for your consideration!

Introduction:

Hello,

My name is Florian, I am a 43 old german, living in germany.
I hold a Bachelor´s degree in BA, but I also studied languages, (Chinese) have studied in China, the US (Texas), and England.
I am hooked on Fantasy and roleplaying games for almost 30 years now and I do have some experience on the table and with PbP.
At the moment I do participate in a few very, very long ongoing campaigns (Rappan Arthuk & RoTRL), but as I have at least 2 hours each night for my own, when my wive is finishing her paperwork, I enjoy weaving tales of wonder and enchantment. My dream has always been to be a writer, but alas live sometimes has other plans for you!

Why would I love to play in your campaign?
The first magic word was DWARF! I just love them.
Sturdy, with a quirky sense of humor, industrious and in love with beer. (Sounds german doesn´t it?)[Although I am a strict non alcoholic due to genetics. I am totally wasted on cough medicine.]
The second was building your Fortress. This strikes a deep, resounding tone in me. Very often you just follow the paths, find the big bad and safe the world. But in building your Fortress, well this is a totally different challenge. And I do love challenges!
And the third thing I really like is your declaration bring the player not the class! You want people to fit in and I think that is very promising.

About Me:
I'm 44, I've been playing D&D & other RPGs since I was 12. A couple of years of PbP experience - failed attempts on giantitp.com and a few campaigns here of which the most active & current have me as Torsten and Jynnjun if you want to take a look at how I've fit into other games. I'm in a couple of face-to-face games too, one as GM and one as a player.

How do I have time for this? Well, cancer has hit me hard enough to make employment impractical, which gives me time if not as much energy to make use of it as I'd like. I can certainly manage another game of 1/day posting though.

Yes, I've played Dwarf Fortress, though not currently. I'll be reasonably familiar with most of what you might drop in from that game (though not everything - badger tornadoes?).

Kingdom building & similar soothes something deep inside me & I'd be glad to give this one a whirl if I can.

Sweet, so I have never played Dwarf Fortress but my buddy who loves to GM has ran a game based on it as well and it was great.

About me: I have played D&D almost 30 years and Pathfinder since it's been out. Pretty much only play pathfinder now. Since my buddy moved away all my playing is done through PBP on here or an occasional game on role20 or Fantasy Grounds. I am in 6PBP games on here now. The oldest is 4 years so I'm not going anywhere. I post multiple times a day as I sit at a computer all day for work. Weekends are hit or miss mostly miss as the wife and I do lot's of things and I don't computer much since I do it for work. So besides for vacation and what not you won't have to worry about me leaving the game.

I'm eastern time zone and work 7:30am to 4pm so all my posting is done then.

Why do I want to play? I love kingdom building. Kingmaker was/is a favorite. So a game that embraces that is always a plus. After that I just love to play. I try and bring energy and keep the game moving. I'm in a 2 day training on the 18th and 19th I will be hoping on those nights to keep up with my current games and I can chime in if selected but won't have much to contribute until the 20th. Thanks for the consideration.

About me:

I'm in my late thirties and have been playing roleplay games since I was 10 (the red box D&D edition). I am based in Europe, and I travel a reasonable amount with work but it doesn't seem to interfere with my posting. I took a break from these boards, but I'm now back and posting regularly in every game I'm in.

I have more experience with GMing than I do with playing, and although my tabletop group has now disbanded, we had a blast. I ran a Kingmaker/Ultimate Intrigue mashup that went really well and I am thinking of putting a recruitment thread up for it at some point so I can try running it in PbP. I'm therefore very familiar with the kingdom building rules.

I'm running one game on these boards and when that's finished I will set up another one (possibly the aforementioned KM/UI mashup), but I am strictly rationing the games I apply to so that I can do them all justice.

I couldn't resist this one, though! I loved The Hobbit, it just captured my imagination and my heart when I first read it and I LOVE the idea of trying to emulate those dwarves! I agree with what the other poster said about the songs: hearing 'Far over the Misty Mountains' in the cinema genuinely gave me goosebumps, they sang it just as it should have been sung. I am far more excited by the concept of this game than a grown-up has any right to be.

I heavily favour roleplay over roll play and I love PbP for the complex character dynamics that it allows. My posts can tend towards the lengthy, but I try not to hog the spotlight (it's a cooperative game). I don't play many computer games, so I'm not familiar with Dwarf Fortress beyond the name itself and the basic concepts.

Scarab Sages

About Me:
I have been RPG tabletop roleplaying on and off for the last 15 years, starting in D&D 3rd edition and moving to Pathfinder around 2007. So I've got a pretty good comprehension of the Pathfinder side of things. I live in northern Georgia, I'm in my early 30s and I am married and have two kids. Aside from PbP games, I have a regular VTT game I play in. Otherwise my time is spent with the family, doing house or school work (working on a dual MBA/MSIS), or playing a video game.

As to my style I enjoy in-depth roleplay but I am not the kind of guy to write a 1000 word description about the scene or a 500 word monologue, but I do love getting player interaction. In fact, that is how I met my current VTT GM and a fellow VTT player that I have been playing with for several years now. I do also enjoy rollplay, but completely understand the difficulties inherent with PbP games. I've been playing PbP games on and off for the last 3-4 years. I've DMed a number of successful modules, and tried running some AP's that have collapsed from player attrition and major life changes (2 kids, moving 3 times, changing jobs, bla bla), luckily I am pretty settled in for the next, probably 15 years or so. As such, not expecting any major upheavals. I'm at the beginning of running a Hell's Rebel AP as we speak. Working to start up a Rise of the Runelords game, and I just joined in on a Hell's Rebels game that lost a player after Book 1 (so currently 3 in total, want to cap it off at 4). I work in IT in the local school district so I have a decent amount of flexibility to post, since I am often in front of a computer. As such, I can often get in several posts a day if the pace allows for it. Weekends can be more difficult for me.

As to the game, I've never played Dwarf Fortress, but I am excited by the prospect of an open ended, kingdom building style game. My VTT game that I play is Kingmaker so I have a small amount of experience with Kingdom building, but having the opportunity to play in an even more open ended style game sounds amazing. Also, the themed party of dwarves sounds like it would be a great time!

About myself:

I'm Irish (so under GMT), in my thirties, and have been roleplaying for most of my adult life, with a few months-long breaks due to circumstances. My creative interests almost all have to do with writing in some shape or form. Post-wise, I keep up with numerous pbp campaigns and have done so for over a year in some cases. I like playing a variety of characters personality types and mechanical functions, and enjoy a variety of tactical elements, story-telling, and character development in games.

About this campaign:

I've dabbled in dwarf fortress but have mainly enjoyed the stories that have emerged from the game, some very organically. I'd love to play in a campaign with that atmosphere. The variety of scenarios between high-level planning and low-level adventuring is very appealing from an interest point of view.

DBH:

I've been a roleplayer for 30 years now. 2E to 3.0 then 3.5 and Pathfinder from the moment it started putting out AP's.

I'm on a PC nearly all day and can post during that time. I live way down at the bottom of the world on GMT +12.

I love Pathfinder, and I also love it when the traditional settings are bent out of shape (Iron Gods is a particular favorite of mine) or flat out ignored in favor of taking the game in a new direction such as you're trying here.

As a Roleplayer I like the characters with skills and brains, which is why I'm thinking Skald. Someone who has a knowledge of the history involved in this under taking, and wants to be there when a new history is made.

Who am I?:

Philo's just this guy, ya know? I've only been gaming since 1982. This means I've made all of the classic mistakes and I'm on to making entirely original mistakes. :)

I can usually post a couple of times a day on weekdays. Weekends are harder, but I can usually check in once a day.

I'm in southern California and on a clear night I can just hear Disneyland's fireworks. Pacific time.

while I haven't played Dwarf Fortress, I do like the idea of an all dwarf campaign. I was in one that petered out, as so many campaigns do. But dwarves don't take setbacks lightly. They tough out the hard times and rebuild. This time, the defenses will be stronger.

Dark Archive

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Hi djdust (Father McKinley),

Skorn here (the player of Gordon Alexander). I love the idea of Kingdom building and enjoy everything dwarf. I think I would enjoy your game and hope I can create a PC that would add to the story and to everyone's enjoyment.

About me: I am a long time role player and GM. I first played D&D back in 1976-77 and have never really stopped. I have had a few short excursions into other systems and in the dark days of 2.0 played a lot of GURPS. When AD&D 4.0 came out I was happy to jump to the more familiar and more loved system that Pathfinder provided. I am active as a player on the boards, and GM in weekly home games and in society play. I am fortunate that I can travel some and like to attend cons to play society play. I will admit that, mostly because I have friends that play it, I sometimes jump into an AD&D 5e game. When I do I generally have fun, but still prefer pathfinder.

I have raised two kids as gamers. Both are now adults but still play PFS when they can. My son is even a venture officer. And I have introduced a lot of other people to this hobby. I attended a con this past weekend with two of my son's friends who I taught to play.

I live in northern Alabama (Central Time). I work for NASA as a contractor and have done so for many years. I am an engineer and computer scientist with an MBA and am part owner of the contracting company I work for. I am to the point in my career that I am cutting back my hours and unless traveling have plenty of time to post a couple times a day. My wife is a non-gamer but supports my hobby, I am lucky to have her.

I have played dozens of games on the boards and can honestly say I have never walked away from an active game. I would certainly never just disappear and if I am going to be gone for any length of time will let the GM know. I do travel some and especially when camping or out of the country it can be hard to post. And I hate posting from my phone. I so wish Wayfinder was available for an iphone...

I am happy to answer any specific questions.

About me:

Hello, I started playing RPG’s with AD&D and I have played many systems since then, My gaming group was playing Storyteller and Shadowrun when 3rd dropped bringing fantasy back. I am a new father and that has limited my ability to play at the tabletop, I was pleasantly surprised to find Play by Post, I am new to it but enjoying it very much as it leans toward flavor and atmosphere. Which I enjoy in a game but is often hard to find in a face to face game.
I am interested in this game because I love dwarves, and the idea of a kingdom building game sounds very interesting to me.

I have plaied in several long tearl realworld games, I love to RP and for the next several years PbP is going to be my best way to do that. You can count on me to stick around

For me Strider from the 1978 Bakshi film is what I think of when I think of Ranger.

Who am I?
Well, I am a Thirty-two year old medically retired Marine. Which means I have a lot of free time. I am going to be a first time dad right after I turn thirty three in December. I am currently GMing a game of Way of the Wicked (my first full AP as a GM.) I'm happy to offer any more info if you have something you wanna know more.

Who am I as a gamer?
As a gamer I've been pretty broad spectrum. I've played a smitten of D&D 3.0 and 3.5. I've played quite a lot of Pathfinder, some Starfinder, a LOT of Star Wars Edge of the Empire, and a bit of well, really anything anyone has presented to me in the last five years.

I'm probably a bit of a chaos monkey. I love trying various things and using utility spells in creative manners. Typically I'm a fan of Bards, Barbarians, Rangers, and Slayers. (I like skills.) One of my favorite concept games to play is A Song of Ice and Fire (Unfortunately they all die quickly). I love political intrigue and combat both pretty equally.

When can I do the gaming?
Every day but Sunday. Sunday I go to the Shooting Range with a buddy in the morning, and straight to an at table game. I could potentially post something like 11pm Central Standard Time.

Why I want to be in this game?
Kingdom building is just amazing. I think it's the true passion behind the concept of Pathfinder/Roleplaying in general. You amass all this power and want to make the world a better place. What better way, then staking out your own personal bit of the world and enforcing their own vision.

The part of it being Dwarven only...well my first character was a Dwarf for a reason. Tolkien was a huge part of my fantasy realm reading when I was young, couple that with Bruenor Battlehammer from the Drizzt series and you've got the basis of why I'd wanna be in the game. Dwarves, building a city under a half active volcano, Pathfinder, Sandbox, and shenanigans both inside and outside of the mountain. How could I not be interested.

* I work nights which gives me an opportunity to post in my PbP games while at work.
* This means that one post per day is usually pretty easy during the week. But on the weekends I often am not able to post.
* I am in a bunch of PbP games right now and am running four of them.
* I had never even heard of Dwarf Fortress before seeing this.
* I am quite fond of Dwarves though for a variety of reasons. On the one hand they make good hearty adventurers and at the same time their personalities make for some good comedy.
* I love games with a kingdom building element. To me that is at the heart of an old-school character's goals. In 1e D&D it was just assumed that this was something you wanted to do, and was built into the various classes.

Hia! I don't really think I have the time to commit to this but it does look very intruging :)
The Z-axis problem.
I do have a quick fix for the Z-axis problem if you are intrested :)
The idea is not to use a true Z-axis but to use a sort of sideways "Y" instead. You have the flat ground; " __ " which meets the side of the mountain going up; " / " you then have another plane which goes into the mountain at a perpendicular angle (or other degree of slope) from the "entry point" of the mountain " \". The further the settlement goes into the mountain, the deeper it gets.
Basically your flat map splits at a certain point into 2 maps; the mountain surface and "underground." The underground map goes downwards at an angle giving the illusion of depth while still being plottable on a map. From that you can still have localized hexes with a 3d element, like a mineshaft or cavern to add variance but its probably better to keep them small and localized :)

It should simplify fortress building a lot if you decide to use it.

I've been a gamer (Video Games, TTRPGs, Strategy Games (Really Big on Twilight Imperium)) all my life, although I haven't memorized any player handbooks, so I may be rusty on the capabilities of specific classes, unless I happen to be playing a character of said class at the time.
I'm just about finished with My degree in Video Production, and will have a lot of free time on my hands come summer. My availability will be, in general, every day I'll be able to post once or twice. I'm in the Pacific Northwest and my time zone is PST. Why do I want to play this game so badly? Because Dwarves....and influencing the path a kingdom takes sounds really cool. Also I'd like to Secretly launch a plan to overrun and take over the kingdom with a horde of cats loyal to me. I have a minimal amount of experience with dwarf fortress, I coudln't get the 3D overview mod to work and got frustrated.

EDIT: Removed Blurb

I've been playing RPGs since the late 70s. I also reside in mountain time. I post 1/day as a rule (depends on if the GM is AWOL) and expect that from my players in the 4 games I run on here. I'm about to finish running RotRL, which has been going to quite a few years now.

I tend to have a fairly thin background on characters, mostly focusing on mechanics (an idea to try) and let them develop a personality as I play them.

Wow, this sounds like a campaign I would absolutely love to join.
But ... I am about to go to a 3 week vacation into a far secluded area of the Scottish highlands and will totally drop off the boards in all likelihood and won't return before 3rd July.

I'll probably sneak this game for a while.
@djdust: Maybe you can add me to a list of 'potential re-recruitment candidates' - if that is a thing for you (I know that I have such a list for my game). In case 'The RL strikes back' happens.

For the time being: happy nerding everyone and give me something to read, once I am back :-)

Thanks for the advice! This is basically why I’m thinking of dividing the hex exploration points of the game up, to facilitate different maps representing different layers underground. As it will come up later in the game, I still have some time to tinker out a workable system.

About Me:

About Me
I am in my very early 30s, and I live on the east coast of the United States (so, Eastern Standard Time). I started playing tabletop RPGs back around 1999, getting started with AD&D at the very end of its lifecycle. I really got my start, though, when 3rd Edition debuted soon after. 3e and 3.5e have a special place in my heart, which is why I immediately took a shine to Pathfinder when it was introduced to me.

My PbP Experience
I have about a year's worth of experience with Play by Post. I started here on the Paizo boards, discovering PbP as a great alternative when conflicting schedules all but buried my in-person RPG groups.
Throughout my RPG experience, I've always been the DM or GM. Therefore, I've especially grown fond of PbP because it gives me the chance to be a PC. Admittedly, though, this means I'm still developing my skill at "pushing" the story along as a character.

Dwarf Fortress and Other Games
Dwarf Fortress was always one of those games that I'd heard about, wanted to try, but never managed to find time to check out. I love games that allow you to build something of your own - a town, a stronghold, a kingdom, etc - which is why this campaign premise immediately struck me. I started browsing the information on Dwarf Fortress, and as soon as I read that cats adopt dwarves, rather than the other way around, I was sold.

My Availability
I check my PbP games several times a day because I always look forward to continuing the stories. PbP games have been a wonderful outlet for both my gaming and my writing passions. I am almost always available each day from 3pm (EST) onwards, and I like to post at least once a day.

Liberty's Edge

Apparently Dwarf Fortress is popular because that's QUITE a list of applicants. Who knew?

Hmm, might be interested not that I've seen this. I'll have to take a bit of time to put together my text block, though. Hopefully masterfully crafted, but I don't have that much skill in typing, so likely not.

DWARF FORTRESS GAME

MUST DOT NOW

(For realsies, though, I'm busy at work at the moment, but I'll put in a real submission later on.)

About Me:

My name's Jasper. I live in Northern California. Way north. Up by the Oregon border.

I've been playing Pathfinder since the original Beta test. (My name is in the playtest credits somewhere.) I'm a longtime vet of the Paizo PbP boards. A while ago I wrote a guide on how to do it. (shameless self-promotion, I know. This is a competition though, so I figure I'd better use any leverage I can)

When it comes to gaming the story is the most important thing to me. I am a big fan of roleplay heavy games, but I also enjoy the mechanics and use them as much as possible to support and inform my character's actions. I feel the relationship between roleplay and mechanics should be symbiotic. If I had to describe my ideal, I'd say 60% roleplay, 40% mechanics. In my opinion, the system should support the story, not be a substitute for it. I like playing Scout characters in Exploration-heavy games because it lets me push things forward quickly. I find that dungeon crawls live and die by their scout's posting rate.

Which brings us to frequency. I'm good to post pretty much every day. Sometimes weekends are a little hard, but I try to give notice when I'm going to be short on posting time. I make up for it by being able to post multiple times a day most days.

I pride myself on my reliability. Too many games die of attrition and players dropping out without warning. You won't have to worry about any of that from me. I'm, in for the long haul every time.

As for this game in particular, it's because I love the premise. I'm a big fan of Dwarf Fortress, and the idea of playing in that setting sounds like a ton of fun. I'm looking forward to my first Fey Mood.

Silver Crusade

Dotting for !!FUN!!

Silver Crusade

I have been playing RPGs since 2000 or so. I have played and GMed D&D mostly during that time, with a few other games sprinkled in. I'm available weekday evenings and almost always weekends as well. I live in US Mountain Time. Why do I NEED to play this game? Two words: Magma Pumps.

That's very similar to how the map worked in early versions of DF

djdust, any thoughts on when you will select your vict.. er, players?

Dark Archive

Hey, it's ya boy Urist.

Everybody get up, it's time to slam now:

Hey there! I'm Nate. I started with PnP RPGs at the dawn of the 2000's with a few friends in high school in 3rd edition of DnD. The game fell apart almost immediately, thanks to a lack of communication between the GM and the Players as to what they wanted out of the game. After that, I joined up with some friends at a FLGS and we had a grand old time of it. We played multiple campaigns over the following decade, enjoying everything from high adventure 3.5 to slow burn political games of Vampire the Masquerade and stories of personal tragedy in Changeling the Lost. Changes in schedule would eventually separate me from this group, but I've been an enthusiastic participant in Pathfinder Society for the past four of five years.

I first heard about Dwarf Fortress while hanging around the /tg/ board and the the whole culture of the thing fascinated me. Hearing stories about how horrible a fort could go, seeing the insane level of depth, and memes surrounding it. By the time I had finished reading the legend of Boatmurdered, I was in love. I still play the game off and on, making each session about trying to learn a new mechanic (last time I learned about how to make eggboxes and breed turkeys!) and sometimes catching old streams to put on in the background while I do other stuff.

My work schedule has me up in the late hours, Central Time. I would usually post in the evening and late evening, checking in on the afternoon from time to time. I'm new to Play-by-post, but I'm more than willing to learn and I've got a lot of local friends who are heavily involved and willing to lend me advice in the down-low.

I'm also a freelance writer, with my first notable credit coming out soon. Pardon if it sounds like an advertisement but I am REALLY EXCITED ABOUT THAT right now.

The first post says recruitment will close tomorrow.

I am a dwarf and I'm digging a hole.
Diggy diggy hole.
Diggy diggy hole.

About Me:
Tell me about yourself.
I am twenty-eight years old. I graduated high school but have not obtained any college degree. I currently work as a bookkeeper for a small helicopter repair shop. I'm currently training my replacement, and expect to be leaving in a year to pursue something in network administration.

Your history with gaming.
I've been playing vidja since I was a kid. My father owned an NES and a Sega Genesis, which I was allowed to play very early on. My parents bought me an N64 shortly after it came out, and I managed to convince them to buy a GCN sometime thereafter. I was introduced to PC gaming by a friend via Red Alert 2 probably around 2001, and played it and other RTS games in my downtime. In 2003, I discovered PC FPS, and mostly stopped playing console in favor of PC games. Today, while I own a handful of modernish consoles, I play almost exclusively on PC, generally sticking with indie games and narrative-driven games.

I was introduced to D&D in 2006 when a friend lent me his copy of The Dark Elf Trilogy by RA Salvatore. This sparked my interest in Forgotten Realms, and when I learned there was a game system this was all based on, I sought that out. I stubbornly stuck to 3.5e until probably around 2012, when I finally made the jump to Pathfinder. I've played in numerous campaigns in both systems (as well as a handful in other systems, such as 4e, 5e, GURPS, Savage Worlds, etc), though I've not had great luck in finding a campaign that lasts.

Your availability.
Right now, my availability is fairly constant. My job's a pretty lax gig, so my hours are flexible and I can post from work when things are slow, which is often; the nature of helicopter repairs is that a job will take anywhere from six months to a year, during which I have little and less to do other than cut checks, and then there will be a week of hell once it's done getting it organized and billed. I'm not currently in any other campaigns, play-by-post or otherwise, nor do I currently have any recurring social obligations outside of work.

Your place in time and space and life.
I am located in Phoenix, Arizona. That means I'm in MST all year round. Contrary to popular belief, most people are not in a standard time zone all year around. For example, if you live in California, you're in PST during the winter, and PDT during the summer. This is true of basically every other state. So when I say that I am in MST all year round, I mean that I am in UTC-7 all year round: we do not observe Daylight Saving Time.

Why you want to play THIS campaign SO BADLY.
Dorfs are the best, and my fascination with them is mostly born of playing and reading about Dorf Fort. Despite this, I've only played a Dwarven character once so far in D&D/PF, and not only was that Dwarf not particularly Dwarf-like, but that game also ended abruptly with the sudden and unannounced disappearance of our GM.

Recruitment is CLOSED.

I want to first acknowledge a few things:

By doing recruitment for this game, in this way, I asked you to maybe open up more than you're used to on the forums, perhaps on all of the internet. There's always a sense of security and safety that accompanies anonymity, and so I deeply appreciate your willingness to be open and vulnerable as such.

Speaking of vulnerability, in the normal recruitment paradigm, there's a level of objective distance when applying with a PC. With a quick glance, I see 24 applicants, and I'm picking 7 players, which means that there are 17 PEOPLE that won't be picked. Not 17 characters, but 17 players, will be rejected. That makes this a very difficult decision for me indeed, because rejection sucks and I don't necessarily want to reject anyone.

So, thanks, thanks, thanks, and more thanks to everyone brave enough to put their egos on the line. I'm going to take my time with this one, and I hope you can appreciate why.

You'll likely hear back from me by next Monday.

The solution is simple. Pick 7, and have the rest show up as a migrant wave! <3

Liberty's Edge

Dwarf arena! throw out some pregens and let us FIGHT TO THE DEATH.

Come at me bro! I am a volcano oracle so the floor IS NOW LAVA!

all dorfy ideas. and, omg, an arena showdown until there are 7 mighty dwarves left standing... that would actually be much easier than ME choosing people... I should have thought of that from the get go.

Just give me some time to get a Throw Anything build together.
