Combat Maps
After several days of travel, the town of Torch finally comes into view. The stone and steel buildings come into view as you come over the top of a rocky outcropping that overlooks the valley settlement. You look about your adventuring group, a collection of strangers that you barely know brought together by parallel interests. Having spoken little of importance to each other, you don't know what drew the others to that poster in Hajoth Hakardos. You have only your own reasons.
"The town of torch is in trouble", the poster said. "The main source of income for the town has vanished as has the chief counsellor. A group of adventurers are needed to find out the cause and bring the counsellor home, if possible. Reward: 5,000gp for the discovery of the counsellor's whereabouts and a scroll of resurrection for his safe return." The poster also listed the remaining members of the town council and where their town hall is located.
Now, in the valley below, your first real adventure begins.

Rhea grasps the handle of her craftsman's hammer. Torch! Finally. I shall get my own creations into that unignorable violet flame at the hills summit. Imagine what I could do with those temperatures...
But as the caravan rounds the corner Rhea's hear sinks. Where was the unending pillar of purple fire? Why was it not streaming from the peak of the hill into the sky as it had done for eons? She had been waiting for this trip a lifetime...
I think I'm gonna be sick...

Rogar looks up at the hill and back down to Rhea.
I know, lass. I only ever got t'use it once, but that there was the best forge fire known to man or dwarf. And it's not the lack of forgin' tha's the problem. Without it's only source of income, another fine town's gonna wither and die.

"Aye... and who knows what else we might find in that forge," Myst adds as he squeezes his right forearm with his left hand absently, his gaze fixed on the darkened town.
"I suppose our employers will want to know that we have arrived. To the town hall then?"
Kaziya's face adopts a wry, nonchalant smile. "Looks like basing your economy on an inexplicable, flame-belching hill isn't exactly fool-proof, eh?"
The short, strange looking woman pulls down her brightly colored headwrap and shakes her hair out, while her long tail languidly plucks a waterskin from her belt and passes it to her hand, whereupon she takes a long drink.
"Gods, I hate traveling."

Myst starts a little at the appearance of the woman's tail. It was hardly the first time he had seen it, for she used it freely. However, as far as Myst was concerned, one did not simply get used to people having tails.
Or horns for that matter.
Keep in mind that although Myst is an aasimar, he has the scion of humanity alternate racial trait and is unaware of his celestial blood.
Eager to hide his unease, he focuses on the woman's words.
"Who's to say the town wasn't founded by fools?" he replies with a grin. "For all they knew, the source of that flame might have been unstable and on the verge of exploding. It could still be for all we know."
He returns his gaze to the town.
"Heh. Wonder if that makes us fools then for taking on this job."
LG Female cleric of Briegh 1; hp 10/10; Fort +4, Ref -1, Will +5; AC14 Rhea's Encounters!

"Not disputing its value, just wondering how much they knew about the tools they were using. How much they know even now."
Myst was absently nursing his right forearm again.
"The wonders brought by the Rain of Stars sometimes have strings attached to them."
"Anyway, we should press on. Torch's missing Councillor isn't going to retrieve himself. Hmmm... well... actually, he might. Wouldn't that be a sight, if we arrived only to find that he had found his way back in the meantime. Best not tarry so we can claim at least some credit if that happens, eh?" Myst laughs, eager to change the topic.
Eager to get started on your mission, the five of you descend into the valley. The first thing you notice is the smell, a cross between brimstone and a dump. The brimstone smell is obviously from the now barren Black Hill, charred from the violet flames infamous flare ups. The town probably just got used to the odor of the hill's upper layers being burned away. The smell of the dump is less obvious as the town had no real landfill that you could see from above, but upon entering the town, you see piles of refuse and trash literally dumped into piles in the streets.
You pick your way to the town hall. You're let in immediately to see an elderly Dwarven woman. She beams when she sees you and introduces herself as Dolga Freddert.

Myst quickly pulls his arm back from Rhea, and walks in the direction of Torch.

"Greetings Dolga. Dr Mystiel Sange. Most people just call me Myst. We are here about this notice," Myst explains to the dwarven woman as he hands her his copy of the poster.
"What can you tell us about the recent happenings in Torch? Who is the missing counsellor and what were the circumstances of his disappearance?"

Coming a little late for the gathering, this tall, lanky teenage girl stumbles across the door way. Barely able to catch herself before falling, this human woman mutters something about human feet. Now that she is here, she listens to the woman talk about a poster.
LG Female cleric of Briegh 1; hp 10/10; Fort +4, Ref -1, Will +5; AC14 Rhea's Encounters!
Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4 Ah, what a relief! Someone as awkward as myself. Hello Ruza, I'm Rhea. We were just introducing ourselves to the selectman Freddert.
been watching "Salem" the past few weeks so all town leaders are selectmen in my mind right now haha!

"It's good to see another dwarf out here in Numeria," Dolga says. "As you can see, the violet torch, the foundation of our entire economy, has gone out. We here at the town council don't know why. We aren't even sure what started it in the first place. It just started spewing out of the hill one day. There wasn't much of a town here back then, just a few wandering Kellid tribes. I was a part of the group that discovered how tame the fire was. No excess heat was transferred past the sides of the flames, but it was direct upwards. You could throw a log a dozen feet over the flames and it would turn to cinders, but put a piece of paper on the ground a foot from it's base, and it wouldn't even smolder. Made for a great forge. Good enough, in fact, to support an entire town around it."
An energy fills her voice and animates her short frame as she goes through her explanation, practically bouncing in her chair. She sighs afterwards, "I hope we can get it back. Our monthly tithes to the Technic League are due soon, and we haven't made enough this month pay them. Been losing gold ever since the flames went out. Travelers come to our town to smelt their creations in our special forge, and when they get here, there's no forge! Innkeepers have to charge reduced rates for their rooms. And with nothing to hold their interest, the smiths never stay more than a night. It's bad for everyone."
"How long you ask? Let's see. It's been 15 days since the flames went out and 7 since Khonnir Baine, the councilor, went missing. He personally found underwater caves that lead under Black Hill, and led two expeditions in them. The first expedition went well. He brought back a strange contraption. I believe his daughter Val has it at their home and business, called the Foundry. The second expedition is when he went missing. Unfortunately, you may not get the chance to converse with him." She also gives you the directions to Khonnir's home.
LG Female cleric of Briegh 1; hp 10/10; Fort +4, Ref -1, Will +5; AC14 Rhea's Encounters!

Aye, wherever there's a forge, you'll find a dwarf. Sounds like the foundry might be the best place t' start. This contraption sounds right interestin', and Val might be able to shed light on what 'er dad was hopin' to find.
"Agreed. Khonnir is well-known for his expertise in Numeria's specific... peculiarities... and it would appear that he had a better idea of what is afoot here than anyone else. Val likely knows at least something of what Khonnir does. Or did." Kaziya's tone is matter-of-fact, despite the somewhat bleak implication of her final statement.
She then steeples her fingers together out in front of her, an eager smile crossing her face as she taps together the short claws at the tips of her fingers. "And I would not mind getting a look at this 'contraption' myself, all things being honest."

"Eh, Brimstone smells better" Rogar tries to keep up a friendly conversation with Ruza, despite the little involuntary twitches every time she misses a note on the lute.
Dolga gives you directions on how to find the Foundry.
The Foundry is more of a collection of buildings. The first, and the main attraction, is a large tavern and inn that is popular with the smiths and other travelers passing through Torch on business related to the, well, torch. The second is Khonnir's personal laboratory and workhouse where he supposedly did all sorts of bizarre experiments with the strange technology of Numeria. The third and final building is Khonnir's house, where he lives with his adopted daughter Val.
The three buildings are a mix of stone and steel structures topped with stone shingles. The windows of the tavern and lab are dark. The residency sits behind them and is not immediately visible.
However, as you start to head around back to the house, you hear a scream of terror coming from that direction.

I put the player tokens in the general area where you guys would be coming from. You can move yourselves around a bit before combat starts, as long as you're to the right of the bushes. Which is about 50ft out from where the action starts.
Before you guys can reach the house, the door on the side of it bursts open. A roughly humanoid creature stumbles out of the house on three spidery legs. It's gray and white body is covered in dust and pieces of it's carapace are missing, showing vein-like cords that spark at the ends. Every movement causes the creature the groan and scream. It's looks around with a single, large, glowing gold eye. Then, it turns around cuts into the stone with a cylindrical blade on it's arm.

Hey all, really physicked to try out this new class.
I can also help if you need assistance, currently running several games as well as teaching many classes over here in Japan.
I have yet to find a good way to incorporate maps in a play by post, so I'll be taking you up on that, Rhea.
I'm looking forward to checking out how one of the occult classes does in gameplay. You're officially the first one I've seen.
Hey Rhea. You may want to double check your profile. I was looking through and found quite a bit of errors. For example, you don't appear to have selected any traits. You should have one Iron Gods campaign trait and one other non-campaign trait. Also, a 13 is a +1 and a 17 is a +3. Please go through and fix the sheet up.

Okay! I've tried to clean up my sheet. Sorry for any mistakes i missed...this game is COMPLICATED! Also got a map link ready to go. It'll appear with all my posts. I'll be "the map girl":)
I've found group-editable GoogleDocs to be pretty effective. You can use PDFs to even set player/NPC/monster tokens on the map, allowing each player to move their character in combat.

How much tabletop experience do you guys have? Just curious to see how rounded the table is.
I got started when I was 8. 3.0 had just been released and my dad got me the three core books. I've branched out into quite a few games since then, but always come back to my first and favorite system.

Wow Ruza I did not know that! Okay, MAP link updated with a fresh Google Slides Doc with full sharing.
I got in to war games with my middle school teacher. Then 2E with my friends. Now pathfinder. Recently started playing a Steampunk Call of Cthulhu game and having a super blast! Most gaming life is pbp right now though:(

I started about 4 years at uni with D&D 4. Then I moved house and found a new group who introduced me to pathfinder. Since then I've played and Dm'd a lot of it, as well as playing a bit of Shadowrun and edge of the empire.
Been playing tabletop RPGs for some 22 years or so, since about 3rd grade. (Egads, that's more than 2/3 of my life! Hadn't really thought of it that way before.)
Started with the D&D "Simple" set (Elves, Dwarves, and Halflings were their own class! Haha! Weird). Before graduating on to 2nd Edition. Jumped on 3rd the moment it came out, but was left somewhat cold by 4th (Not a hater! Just wasn't my thing). Was drawn in to PF during the open Beta. Like 5e quite a bit, but Paizo has won over my loyalty (and thus gaming dollars) quite completely with their worldbuilding, flavor, and commitment to progressive representation.
I've dabbled in tons of other systems along the way, from WEG's d6 Star Wars to Palladium's calculus homework approach. The system I play in most other than PF is Savage Worlds, for pretty much anything non sword-and-sorcery in flavor.
I'm still not totally over that realization I've spent most of my life pretending to hit dragons with swords. o___o;

Wow, I feel like a complete newb now!
I liked 4e when I played it, but I don't think I'd go back. PF seems way more like an rpg, whereas 4e seemed more like a tactical game to me. It always felt like there were only a certain number of ways to play a character. What's 5e like? I've been meaning to have a look.
Sorry to ask lots of questions, but what's savage worlds like? Specifically, I've been coming up with some ideas for a (moderately realistic) post apocalyptic campaign. I've imagined I'd do it in d20 modern, as I've read the rules and it seems pretty simple for someone who's used to the d20 system, but I'm open to other ideas.

5e is simplistic. I haven't tried it, but I've taken a look. Most numeric bonuses and penalties have been gotten rid of in favor of advantages or disadvantages. Advantage is roll twice and take the better result. Disadvantage is roll twice and take the worse result.
The good news is that there is less chance of you forgetting about a minor bonus that would have been the difference between success and failure. The downside is that there is a lot of DM adjucation when both advantages and disadvantages apply to the same action. Also, the DM could add additional advantages or disadvantages based on environmental factors, role playing consequences, or just common sense. Which could be a good thing if your DM uses them well to increase immersion, or it could be a bad thing if you've got a DM that uses them strictly to punish the players.
There are fewer books out, which is both good and bad depending on what kind of player you are. The adventures wizards has put out for it so far are not up to par with 'most' of Paizo's stuff.
Personally, I'd rather play pathfinder for the larger material base and better adventures as opposed to 5e. However, I would give 5e a chance if I felt that a certain homebrew concept would work better with that system or if someone I trusted to be a fair DM wanted to run a 5e game. It's not a system I would play in if I thought the person was an adversarial GM, mostly because of the (dis)advantage system.
Savage Worlds is a very cleanly designed and versatile "setting neutral" system that includes easily-executable provisions for flavoring different genres appropriately. I have used it to adapt both Avatar: The Last Airbender and the Persona video games to the tabletop quite effectively. I also use it to run games set in World of Darkness, as I never particularly cared for White Wolf's mechanics.
How much work you will have to put in varies (for instance: adapting Avatar was quite simple, whereas Persona required a great deal of design work on my part) but it provides a basic framework for virtually anything you can think of.

Pathfinder takes TON of work to run for the poor GM! My favorite so far is Cthulhu. It's investigation and RP heavy. But most people wanna just kill monsters. Still, got a steampunk game going on here:)

I've been playing Pathfinder for.... about 10 years now. Started when I went back to college and have been with it ever since. I've only been playing online for about a year though... Not that many games over here in Japan... well, not that are close.
I tried to get into a steampunk game, the GM was using the new system... but he didn't like my character idea... And here i thought a talking monkey, wielding a monkey wrench was a good fit for a gearhead.
LG Female cleric of Briegh 1; hp 10/10; Fort +4, Ref -1, Will +5; AC14 Rhea's Encounters!
Haha, should make it a talking samauri monkey!
lol, never thought of that. I am posting as him right now so you can take a look at him... encase your steampunk game needs a new player :3
I love that name, and I don't know why.

It's cause it's a sexy monkey-name haha! *gives monkey a pat*

Yes Gm, any help by PM or discussion thread would be awesome. Sorry for my lack of game knowledge.:( Anyway, I'm just happy to be here and RPing my character. Not much of a power gamer. So if I'm not making sense just say "Rhea, you're not making sense. Again!" haha!

All right.
First, about skills. The appraise skill is for finding the value of loot you collect. If you're trying to size up monsters, the appropriate knowledge skill is important. For robots or other tech stuff, that's engineering. Ordinary constructs are arcana. There a lot of different knowledges.
Likewise, there are a lot of different craft skills, they just aren't listed like the knowledges. A person who crafts weapons can't necessarily craft alchemical items. You have to pick one to invest in. You could invest in more than one, if you put skill points into multiple specific crafts.
Now I see you don't have the Inteligence to really pull off a,lot of different knowledges and crafts like you seem to want. A good fix would be to rearrange your point buy. That has to be done anyway as you ate at a 21 point buy instead of 20.
It looks like you put your human race bonus into intelligence. My suggestion is to drop your wisdom down to 15 and use your race bonus to bring it back up to 17. This will actually drop your point buy by 6. You're at 15. Spend two points to bring your Int back up to 12. Your point buy is now 17 with the same stats you had before. From here you could spend the last 3 point to make your Int a 14 and better be the holy inventor character, or do other things if that's what you want.
Also, you don't seem to have used the extra skill point being human gives you. If you traded itvout gor an alternste race bonus, I didn't see where. And you haven't used your favorite class bonus, which is an extra hit point or skill point you get when you take a level in the first class you took. And yes, you do get it at level 1. Again, if you traded it out for something race or class specific, I didn't see where.
You actually have a lot of room to become a more skilled character just by using free resources.

Okay I'll work on her tonight...
I want to say that I'm not trying to discourage you. Your character looks good for the most part. It's just the skills that need work.
And for the record, I try to keep up with the characters of all my players. Not because I don't trust them, but because it's very easy to overlook things. And it's only when something weird happens or someone doesn't seem to be clear on something that I take a really close look. If you ever have questions about something, just ask. Pbps are actually really good for that sort of thing because you don't have to worry about people getting mad for holding a game up with questions.

Knowing my luck, all the creatures in this adventure will be mechanic and not effected by mind effect spells.
@Rhea: You may also want to consider taking the Iron Priest archetype for your character. It gives you some thematic Class Skills that a Cleric usually does not have, like Knowledge(Engineering). It also lets you affect constructs with your Channel Energy ability.
If you need any help tweaking your character, I am happy to assist!

But having a few options to cover your weakness is never a bad thing, either.

Yeah, dwarves have lot of those: "+2 to this stat under these circumstances" options, which it's very easy to forget about!
Hopefully the stat line is a bit easier now.

Hey, just letting you know I'll be away for the weekend and may not have internet access. I'll be back early Monday afternoon (GMT), so hopefully won't miss much!
All right. I doubt too much will happen over the weekend.
Do the map people have an idea on how to use them in dungeons?

You bet. I will get a map up for you in a few hours.

GM i put up a full dungeon map with fog-of-war rectangles on it. No grid lines. Do you think this will work? If you want something different just ask.
After this initial dungeon though I might have to ask AP questions about their names so I can hunt down the maps.
I only own book 1:)
That's great. Thank you, Rhea.

Hey Matt, do you think you can put the map in a url link on the short description area? That way we can access it at the top of each page.
