Small chips fly from the globe as the party continues the pound at the hardened crystal. Larger cracks begin to show. But rather than continuing her attack Pashitel retreats back into the center of the sphere, once again hidden by the swirling mists inside.
Perception (DC15):
The globe is about to shatter. Likely with only one more flurry of blows. Oddly out of the corner of your eye you notice the runes that circle the room glowing brighter as the globe gets weaker. They have also taken on a more radiant, silvery tone.
"Hold a moment. Look." Anwel puts up his sword and glances at the runes on the wall. Where before they were red and threatening, now they shone like the light of a full moon. The oppressive sulfur smell was weakening, too. "Is that a good sign?"
Anwel, you aren't exactly sure of the religious meaning behind the runes, however, their magical nature is quite clear. Their power is meant to imprison the demon or prevent its escape at all costs.
Andrei's ability to detect magic is still active and he is able to sense a large power build up of Evocation magic within the runes. Most likely some kind of fail-safe designed to try and destroy or significantly harm the demon should the integrity of the sphere be broken.
The bard can also sense a build up of Abjuration magic coming from within the sphere, although it is still somewhat weak.
The runes continue to glow brightly as the sphere weakens further under the blows from Warren's elemental. When Phedre delivers another sturdy hit, there a shrill cracking follows and the runes grow ever brighter.

Andrei starts swing hard again. "Quickly destroy it, the moment before it breaks property dive for cover and let the elemental do the last blow. I'll explain later" Andrei shouts.
"Is that what the runes do? That makes sense." Anwel slips his shadowy sword into the sash around his waist, and draws his bow. He steps away from Pashtiel's sphere, gives the others a moment to do the same, and fires an arrow at the deepest-looking crack he can see.
Anwel and Vrag back away while Phedre, Andrei and Warren keep pounding away at the orb. Finally after a few more moments with the runes glowing as bright as a midday sun both Anwel sends his arrow streaking toward a large crack. This is followed by Phedre and Andrei and Warren's elemental. With a deafening shriek of shattering crystal the orb collapses. At the same instant the runes release their power. While much of it is focused directly in the area where the sphere was, the entire room is bathed in what can only be called the flames of the heavens.
Warren's elemental is quickly vaporized while everyone else near the orb dives to escape the blast.
Andrei, Phedre, and Warren all need to make a Reflex Save (DC20) or take Holy Fire Damage:6d6 ⇒ (2, 6, 6, 4, 4, 4) = 26. If you save, damage is half.
Anwel and Vrag need to make a Reflex Save DC(15) or take Holy Fire Peripheral Damage:3d6 ⇒ (4, 5, 4) = 13. If save then half damage.
Anwel crosses his arms over his face as the runes vent their wrath upon Pashtiel's prison. He feels the flames burning through the outer layers of his clothes, with particular intensity where he'd tucked his conjured sword. He goes to draw it again when the heat subsides, only to find it translucent and flickering. It would need some time to regain itself.
In the meantime, Anwel points a preparatory finger at the shattered crystal, waiting for the demon to emerge.

Phedre, along with Anwel and Andrei manage to avoid the worst of the blast. Smoke boils off of a stunned Warren as the light fades away, but he is still standing. A look of surprise crosses Vrag's blacked and smoldering face, now devoid of much of the fur that once covered it. The bugbear then simply collapses to the floor.
Something rattles the shards of crystal near the center of the shattered sphere. Before anyone can get a close look the room is suddenly filled with a half dozen smoldering, arachnid bodies. Unlike typical giant spiders, these all have extremely long, thin legs, jointed in three places. The legs support a thin, oval shaped body and separate head. Multifaceted eyes watch the party closely, while a thin, tentacle lined mouth whispers quietly. "Free....free at last."
All of the creatures then bolt for the passage, currently blocked by Anwel, Andrei, and Phedre.

Just a quick question, In the last post you said Andrei was close to the blast so his save wasn't good enough, like Warren he is still standing but not good. However you put Vrag far away so while his save won't save him he would have only lost 13 Hp. Was it a mistake of placement in your first post or the first one was right but you misread it for the second?
Good catch. I misremembered my first post and forgot to check it the others mre carefully before hitting post. Vrag did miss his save but only took the lower damage. Andrei did not escape the blast but is closer to the entry than Warren since you made a second 'leap'. Sorry for the confusion.

"Not for long." Anwel holds his guard in front of the passage until the group of no-doubt-summoned spiders bears down upon him and his friends. When he is sure he will catch as many as he can, he looses his spell. A grayscale spectrum spews from his hand, seeming almost solid in the darkness left behind by Iomedae's fire. It finds the eyes of the spiders and checks their forward movement.
"Distractions." He looks to Andrei and Phedre. "They will regain themselves presently."

The spider like creatures all rush the doorway at once. Anwel and Andrei each cast their spells to catch as many of the creatures as possible. But as the magical spray and shards touch the creatures they each wink out of existence only to reappear again moments later in a different location. The same thing happens when Phedre lands a blow with her sword. The weapon simply passes through the creature which blinks away and then reappears a few feet away. Clearly only one creature is the real demon, but it is impossible to tell which one until Vrag steps up to one of the creatures attempting to use the ceiling to pass overhead and this time his blade hits something solid.
Pashitel releases a loud scream of pain which reverberates throughout the cavern as one of its legs falls to the floor still flopping after Vrag's lucky blow severed it at the joint. It falls to the floor and instantly all of the illusions disappear while the demon's concentration is completely shattered.
"Why did I expect anything different?" Anwel shakes his head. Pashtiel's illusions kept getting the better of him, and he was allowing it. No matter. Better take advantage while they're gone. Anwel points at the demon and looses a glowing green ray at its chest.

A burrowing earth elemental can pass through stone, dirt, or almost any other sort of earth except metal as easily as a fish swims through water. If protected against fire damage, it can even glide through lava. Its burrowing leaves behind no tunnel or hole, nor does it create any ripple or other sign of its presence. The demon's legs wither as Anwel's magic washes over its body. Clearly weakened by the spell, Pashitel's movements are slower and off balance as it has little strength remaining. However, this ends up actually helping the creature initially as its staggering movement throws the attacks of Warren's allies and Phedre completely off. All miss the mark.
Vrag manages to land another hit, but its not enough to bring the demon down. Finally, Andrei steps up and sends his blade slicing along the wounded creatures body.
"Noooo!" Screams the creature in a mind piercing tone as its legs collapse and the arachnid body slumps to the floor. A moment later the whole body flares a brilliant violet color and returns the demon to its home plane leaving nothing but a dark shadow it the stone floor.

Warren claps Vrag on the shoulders. "Well placed strikes. You have faced and defeated a creature of great evil. We will sing of this event for years to come."
"Even if it is not, we should remain alert in the days and years to come." Anwel nods approvingly at Andrei's and Phedre's divinations, and slumps back against the stone door frame. The battle, and Iomedae's trials, have drained most of his energy, and his magic is nearly spent too. Pashtiel's tricks have given him a few new ideas of his own, but he will need to rest before attempting any serious experiments. "I do not mean to diminish your accomplishment Vrag, Andrei, but no demon strong enough to require all this," he waves his hand at the runes and shattered glass, "to bind it would have been destroyed utterly by the force we brought to bear. It is likely banished, and may return.
"But if it does, it will seek us out, not this place of its confinement. Folk can resettle here safely. That is what matters." He pushes away from the wall and sways a little on his feet before steadying himself. "We should let them know."
First, I'd just like to say thanks again and I hope everyone enjoys the game.
To get things started if you could all give me your time zones (Mine is US West Coast, PST) and just let me know that your characters are all final and ready to start that would be great.
A couple of other formatting and 'house rule' notes before we begin:
Critical Hits will cause double damage, but I will also add some other effect based on the situation. I have numerous charts to roll from including the old Rolemaster set which are still fun.
Critical Fumbles are possible with a natural 1 and a confirmed miss. I will determine the result based on a d100 roll from you.
During combat please begin each post with a spoiler containing the round, your Initiative, AC, HP Current/HP Total, Reflex, Will, and Fort Saves.
To help me find things quicker and easier, in the IC thread please do use the OOC tags when talking out of character and "bold normal dialogue."
If you have questions feel free to ask, otherwise feel free to discuss roles, tactics, kingdom names, marching orders, etc. I'll have the first actual Gameplay post up a little later today.
Do you prefer that we fully detail our equipment, or can a nebulous 'Adventuring gear' cover flint and tinder, mess kits, grooming supplies, blankets, and all the other essential stuff that costs < 1gp?
For equipment, please do a 'one-time' detail list of those typical 'adventuring' items your character carries. This will help when replacing lost or damaged gear or identify who just might have the right piece of equipment to complete a task.
All consumables (including rations) should be accounted for and tracked.

Great to be selected. I am on EST but usually stay up late to keep up with the PSTers. I know the bird animal companions are not optimized for combat, but the role playing flavor of the eagle shaman was too tempting. Hopefully the superior scouting will make up for this somewhat.
DM - Tareth I await your determination of the cost and stats for a falcon and the gear so I know how much $$$ I have left. And this is assuming that falconry as we know it is practiced. I thought about using the hawk familiar as a baseline.

Warren - For the cost I'm going to say 60gp for the falcon/eagle and all needed gear. That's about midway between a light horse and a good guard dog.
I'll look into stats soon and try to get you something tomorrow morning.
FYI, if you are interested in some potential descriptive ideas and cool images of actual Native Eagle Hunters check out this page.
I dropped the +1 composite bonus on the bow for a +0 composite bow and fleshed out my supplies. I probably went overboard on the gear, but donkeys are sturdy critters and you did say you wanted a detailed list ;)
BTW, are regional langues going to come into play in this campaign? I took Hallit, but I can swap it out for sylvan if it is unlikely to be used.
I'm EST as well. Glad to be gaming with you folks. I'm looking forward to being on the other side of the screen for awhile. I equipped Stephanus as the city boy he's been all his life (wasn't sure I was making the cut). I'll spend a bit more and outfit him per the campaign intro. Otherwise the character details for Stephanus are final.
Tareth, if I put the occasional journal entry together in character, should I spoil it but put it in the gameplay thread? Or would you prefer it elsewhere?

The eagle is normally included as an animal companion. As falconry was a profession of the nobles, I assume the hood, gloves, rings, straps etc. as well as a quality domesticated bird do not come cheap. The hawk familiar may be a place to start. Right now I'll call it 60gp for a trained falcon and falconry gear.
I'm a big Tolkien fan, so the giant eagles always intrigued me. Awesome link to eagle hunters, if possible I was hoping to buy an eagle hunter rather than falcon. I was unaware that the tradition of eagle hunters seems to predate falconry.
Thad's equipped to the nines with horse & mule, etc (as befits the war stud that he is). Stephanus is no horseman. Should we be trying to talk our way onto one of the settler's wagons, buying our own animals, hoofing it ourselves, or pooling resources to buy a wagon of our own? I still have pocket change enough to make a good start toward a wagon, but probably not the skills to drive it myself.
EDIT: Though I suppose we could do this in character since we haven't met prior to gathering at the gate...
I have changed Kams' avatar to avoid confusion with Thad and Warren; guess we all liked the look. He should be all set and ready to go, with the profile updated to match the HL sheet. EST here, though it should not be a problem, my current work schedule gets me home round midnight.
Thanks for the selection! I just got home from a grueling 24-hr bus ride back home from holiday adventures, but I'm here! I'm in the same time zone as you are, master DM. However, once school starts up again, I have mostly evening classes...so, late nights and early morning posts for me.
I'll work on putting my character up as my main profile, and solidifying all that stuff tonight.
Well, for the next three weeks I'll be at GMT+1, but January 21st I fly back to California and when I recover from the ordeal, I'll be at PST till July.
I know the fey aspects of this game are heavy, and the last I played Tityanna she played leaning towards the fey aspect of things. It would not change her history much to flip from verdant to fey, and, yeah, I need to update her stats for 25 point buy.
Ok, character updated. Added in personality and appearance, still working on the gear (just need to add up the encumbrance and what gold I have left). I have some ideas on character personality development and how they'll tie in with the feats/revelations, but I'm tired and must sleep. I shall finish the updating process tomorrow.
I have updated Tityanna to be Fey Bloodline as well. And 25 point buy, which means she has really decent physical stats now and might be able to take a hit or two :P
Oh, and her Fey bloodline isn't going to be a big issue - for now. It is something that came up in play when she was verdant, that she took the side of nature and natural order of things as a good character who appealed to order as the limit of what the group was told to do rather than a restrictive personality. If that makes any sense.
Basically instead of looking at the Charter as a document that gave supreme authority to do whatever the group wanted, she looked at it as one that defined what their legal authority was and did not wish to stray from that.
Will likely change her avatar soon, if any of the new ones suit.
@Thad: The regional languages will be used, so either choice may come in handy.
@Stephanus: The journal entries sound great. Go ahead and put them as spoilers in the Gameplay thread.
@Warren: Duh. My bad. The cost for just the gear would be 10gp (20gp if you want high-end, decorated gear). I have no problem with you using either eagle or falcon. If you decide to go with the falcon just use the eagle template in the core book but add +1 DEX, -1STR, and make the fly speed 85'.

@ DM: Warren bought a hunting animal at a young age, and now he has an additional eagle animal companion who needs no gear. As I was not aware hunting eagles were as common, I have changed the bought animal with gear to an eagle. I have subtracted 60gp for bought eagle and gear--I just don't know what the stats of the bought eagle are.
At 3rd lvl, I'm going to be taking the Life Link revelation. This ties in with my curse, as Zavac will quite literally be taking scars (damage) from the party. However, since I won't be getting it until 3rd lvl, what I'm wanting to do is just have Zavac kind of distant towards everyone, slowly making bonds with the members. As these bonds grow stronger, he literally becomes bonded to them.
@Zavac: I'm not familiar with Oracles, but that sounds like a neat way of developing him. One of the reasons I'm looking forward to a campaign like this is the opportunities for group forming and social interactions beyond what you'd see in a typical small party. From what I understand, Oracles are not particularly common in Golarion, so you are probably quite mysterious to characters without Knolwedge: Religion or Arcana. Depending on how mysterious you want to be, you could talk about your "gift" in character...
@All: I'm in GMT -10 on vacation for the next week or two, then will be going back to GMT +0. I work erratic hours, so my posts could come in at pretty much any time but evening in GMT will probably be the most common.
@ Thad: I have some RP ideas floating around in my head as to how I'll "expose" his gift. I'm thinking he'll probably get close to one of the members (at this point, kind of looks like Warren), and then go from there. He's not shy, but he's still quite regretful of what happened. I'm definitely going for a mysterious character, at least in the beginning.
I, too, am looking forward to the social interactions. From an RP standpoint, this character has to be the most interesting I've ever made.

Thanks Thad, I got the basic eagle stats now. Like Zavac, Warren is not antisocial, he just has been unsocial up to now. I will see how well I can develop him from a recluse to a member of a government. I plan on having him learning to lead in the outdoor environments where he should be the expert.
I picked the master of birds concept to test my theory that scouting and knowing the lay of the land is more important than fighting power in an animal companion.
I added the animal companion perks on top of the basic eagle template. It seemed the animal companion should be better than a generic eagle.

Ya, happy 2012. Most of my crew is either trying to sleep off or remember the last night of 2011. I think we're getting into the mid 80s today in sunny central Florida. Another wintery day in paradise...
actually rained today in southeastern Norway. has been unseasonably warm. this time last year it was -14 C, and let me tell ya, that kinda cold sucks when you live off the Oslo fjord.
70's and 80's in January, that's just not right. :)
I guess we're pretty middle of the road today in Oregon at sunny and 46. Of course looking at the forecast our usual cheery winter weather returns with gray skies and rain expected Tuesday-Saturday.
@Warren - not quite neighbors but close. We're in Largo (small township crushed between St.Pete and Clearwater).
@Hu5tru - business took me to Oslo a couple years ago. I still have occasional business calls with the folks we worked with then. Beautiful country and people. Of course that was in September, not January.

Thad, thanks for putting this together and Tityanna, good idea. I'll post something over there later today. I think I'll also add a current date since this campaign can run over a longer time frame than most. If there's anything else like this that you all think might be helpful just let me know.
Gonna retry reading John Norman's Gor books again, so if my character starts asking to be mistreated its because I actually made it through one of those things.
I got about 2/3rds through the first book before the darn thing bored me to death.
Sorry to have fallen behind the conversation. No work day posting for me during daylight hours I'm afraid.
Let me know if I need to slow things down a little. I've been trying to respond to those who've been posting, but at the same time leave things open for others to jump in before really moving the timeline forward too much.
Today's the first day of classes back, and so I have a lot of free time on my hands this week...don't expect this many posts in the future, though... I've been trying to limit who I talk to to who I notice is on.
No worries, I'm just leary of not holding up my end of the character development. My experience with these thing is that it slows down terribly and takes alot of patience to keep the thing going long term. I wouldn't do anything to sap the energy from the thread right now. As long as my character's absence isn't detracting from your story, I'm happy with the pace.
