Ed's Rusthenge

Game Master fine_young_misanthrope

Rusthenge is a deluxe Pathfinder adventure for 1st-level characters.

The ruins of Rusthenge have stood silent vigil over the southern coastline of Chakikoth Isle for eons, dating back to the era of the runelords of ancient Thassilon. The town of Iron Harbor was built in Rusthenge's shadow, but now that New Thassilon has risen from the depths of the distant past, the old ruins are coming under unexpected scrutiny. Something sinister is afoot in Rusthenge, and it falls to a brand new band of adventurers to learn the truth of the ancient evil that stirs deep within its long-abandoned halls! This adventure also includes new items and character backgrounds, as well as a pair of new monsters tied to the region's notorious history.

Rusthenge Backgrounds
The following backgrounds include a built-in reason
why the character is among those chosen by the
village elders to accompany Elder Ordwi on her trip
to Iron Harbor.
OSPREY BARNRAISER BACKGROUND
RARE
A person cannot live on fish alone, which is why you
work with Elder Bo’Mel on her farm. Elder Ordwi
asked you to accompany her to Iron Harbor because
she values your input in evaluating how the village
might be making use of their natural resources.
Choose two ability boosts. One must be to Strength
or Constitution, and one is a free ability boost.
You’re trained in the Nature skill and the
Architecture Lore skill. You gain the Natural Medicine
skill feat.
OSPREY FISHER BACKGROUND
RARE
Fishing is Osprey Cove’s number one profession, and
you’ve apprenticed under the best of them: Elder
Anlorgog. You’re also a keen study of boats and ships,
so Elder Ordwi wants you along on her trip to Iron
Harbor to help her evaluate the strength and purpose
of the village’s fleet—particularly if they’re building
ships meant for war.
Choose two ability boosts. One must be to Strength
or Dexterity, and one is a free ability boost.
You’re trained in the Crafting skill and the Sailing
Lore skill. You gain the Quick Repair skill feat.
OSPREY SCION BACKGROUND
RARE
You are the birth or adopted child of one of the five
elders of Osprey Cove, and your parent or guardian
volunteers you to accompany Elder Ordwi on her trip
to Iron Harbor, hoping to get an unbiased account of
events. If your parent or guardian is Ordwi, then she
values your companionship and insight and wants you
along on this important mission.
Choose two ability boosts. One must be to
Constitution or Charisma, and one is a free ability boost.
You’re trained in the Diplomacy skill and the Xin-
Edasseril Lore skill. You gain the Hobnobber skill feat.
OSPREY SCOUT BACKGROUND
RARE
Though Osprey Cove is a quiet village, you’ve scouted
the wilderness inland, watching for any dangerous
wildlife or creatures in order to keep it that way. Elder
Ordwi wants you along on this trip because she knows
your knowledge about the Kindred Coast will help
ensure the safety of the group on the day-long trip.
Choose two ability boosts. One must be to Dexterity
or Wisdom, and one is a free ability boost.
You’re trained in the Survival skill and the Scouting
Lore skill. You gain the Experienced Tracker skill feat.
OSPREY SCRIBE BACKGROUND
RARE
Either as a punishment or because of political
ambition, you work for Elder Vandous. On her trip to
Iron Harbor, Elder Ordwi needs someone at her side
who is a skilled observer and adept at keeping journals;
she hopes to provide the other elders with accurate
information about their sibling village upon her return.
Choose two ability boosts. One must be to
Intelligence or Charisma, and one is a free ability boost.
You’re trained in the Society skill and the Demon
Lore skill. You gain the Streetwise skill feat.
OSPREY SPELLCASTER BACKGROUND
RARE
Whether by instinct or study, magic is one of your most
notable talents. Your understanding of the traditions
of ancient Thassilon has helped you learn languages
associated with that nation. Elder Ordwi fears there
may be some form of magical affliction spreading in
Iron Harbor, and she needs your knowledge to help
her determine the threat.
Choose two ability boosts. One must be to
Intelligence or Wisdom, and one is a free ability boost.
You’re trained in your choice of the Arcana, Nature,
Occultism, or Religion skill, and gain Thassilonian as a
bonus language. You also gain the Quick Identification
skill feat.
OSPREY WARRIOR BACKGROUND
RARE
You’d always been the most athletic child of your play
group, leading the other children in games of skill
and strategy. As an adult, there are few opportunities
for you to employ these skills in the village. Osprey
Cove is a quiet community, with hardly any dangers
or foes to fight. You occasionally break up pub brawls,
or perhaps start them out of boredom. Elder Ordwi
asks you to come with her simply because of your
endurance and athleticism—the Old Coast Road is
poorly maintained, and the physical aid you’ll bring
on the trip will likely be invaluable.
Choose two ability boosts. One must be to Strength
or Constitution, and one is a free ability boost.
You’re trained in the Athletics skill and the Gorum
Lore skill. You gain the Hefty Hauler skill feat.

Started rolling up a Human Thaumaturge with the Isprey Scribe background, should finish later tonight.

I think I saw interest in a thaumaturge, swashbuckler, and barbarian. I'll probably roll up some kind of spellcaster.

Yup, I'm going to be the barbarian/medic. Figured that for my first pbp, best to keep it simple and just keep Striking like a barbarian should. However I'd be open to playing other classes if we have too many people in melee...Might want to go with a forensic medicine investigator if so.

Unfortunately as flavourful as the custom backgrounds are, I'm not going to use any of them. Having access to battle medicine at level 1 is key to my character. Going human to gain battle medicine via a skill feat could be an option, but I lose access to my reaction and +2 hp.

If any of you guys get wounded/low hp during combat, please ping me so I know to run over to you guys to battle medicine!

Thank you for having me in this game. I will create my character later. What classes will others be going to play? I am seeing a barbarian/medic.

Just figure I will throw those out there. At 1st level, really only Ancestry Paragon matters, but it matters overall for build planning, so def worth asking.

Jacen casts Presitigation (1E) and a small dot of red light appears on the ground in front of Kwan Chang, who curses in a manner which would make a sailor cringe, then slams his paw down on the dot.

NOTES:

1 - Ninja-dotted Gameplay
2 - Edited Custom Background in Pathbuilder so that Jacen's Lore skill is Thassilon not Demons
3 - Added Dull Gray Aeon Stone to Gear: this is the cornerstone (pun intended) of Jacen's psychic journey and interest in all things Tassilonian. While I would prefer that it was an inheritence rather than a 9gp buy, I can live with that. This stone was formerly a Tourmaline Sphere used by Jacen's great great grandfather (elven) who came to meet him when he was born. The stone was already dull gray by then having saved his gradfather's life.

Awww...he's a cute guy! Reminds me of Oscar the Grouch but less grouchy. Just curious though - what alchemical recipes does he know? I believe you have access to 4 first level alchemical formulas and 2 first level alchemical formulas that must be elixirs or tools.

In case we are using Remaster rules, I believe Seedpod gains a range increment of 30 feet instead of 10 feet. Makes that attack easier to use.

I took:

Quicksilver mutagen, lesser
Silvertongue mutagen, lesser

You might need healer's tools to treat wounds, even if you are using natural medicine to substitute nature for medicine. A repair kit would be nice too if you have crafting. Would be nice if you got the recipe for elixir of life though so you can cook some up on the fly. Not to backseat too hard, but you should max out your Int as an investigator since you get to use your Int modifier to hit if you Devise a Stratagem.

Ah, good point. My other healer's an alchemist, so I forgot about those, but will definitely get them. And I wavered on Elixir of Life, since I did have other ways to heal, but probably makes sense.

Unfortunately for the concept, leshies take a hit to their Intelligence, so this is my maxed out starting Intelligence.

At low levels, I think having multiple means of healing helps prevent character death. The more the better.

Also, I think since 2023 you can just go for 2 free boosts with any ancestry instead of taking the 3 boosts + 1 flaw that some ancestries have. That means you can have an incredibly intelligent leshy without the flaw. I know I have used this before for a leshy magus.

I agree, but since it's an adventure rather than a full adventure path, the lack of a growth arc seems like it justifies a little more optimization than I normally worry about.
