Hi all and thanks for the invite Obermind.

I haven't played Shadowdark, but reading through the quick start rules it seems like a bit of a mashup between 5E, 1E, and DCC. I'm willing to give it a go. And having played and GM'd a few DCC funnels, I'd go ahead and give the random rolling a try for my PC.

As for light sources, I don't mind PCs being a little nerfed when it comes to darkness. The fact that nearly every PC has darkvision in 5E is just as annoying as none having it. Maybe there is a middle ground where you can still have the danger/horror of darkness but we ease up on some of the more bookkeeping in the rules? For instance, for tracking light sources, maybe a source lasts for 3 encounters (puzzle, monster, npc, whatever) before it burns out, needs more oil, or recast? Or maybe the GM just rolls to see if we've got sufficient light for an encounter. If yes, then it ins't an issue unless an enemy or someone does something. If no, then maybe a d6 roll to see how many rounds of light we have left. A simple INT check could warn a PC about the upcoming light failure, but it would have to be an active roll, not passive. Just some random musings

Finally, I'm not a big fan of using Discord. I just prefer having only one place to check for game info/discussion. If others want to do that, thats cool but I'll probably steer clear.

Hi WW, I'm certainly interested. Probably look at trying The Eye or as a secondary choice The Knack. Open to most any of the Houses, I guess Bastien or Lovell would be my tops picks, but really anything could work for me.

Hey all, I'm the 'one more' Infinity mentioned. Haven't figured out exactly what to play yet, but given the current group probably leaning toward bard or rogue.

Like Lucian, I've been slinging dice since the early 80's and this is pretty much my creative counter balance for being a non-profit CFO in the real world.

As long as work/life don't get too busy, I'm usually good to post once or twice a day depending on the situation.

Cool. I'll work on getting the crunch and background into an alias. Should have something ready to go by tomorrow morning.

GM: I think I'm going to switch to Alchemist instead. It just seems like it'll be a bit more fun at the moment. Although I really don't know since I'm not familiar with 2E.

Okay. I'm going with goblin swashbuckler.

He grew up working in the big Kreed lumber mill like many in his clan. The Kreed's prefer to use goblin's to maintain the massive blades and steam powered equipment because they are small, nimble, quite expendable, and work cheap. Seeing no future and a limited number of fingers and limbs in that line of work, he decided on a different career path. Having always been good with a blade, he initially tried to work for the sheriff. His hope being that a bit more law and justice in Falcon's Hollow could help his clan who were often mistreated and taken advantage of by all three families. Especially as things grew worse when the Kreed's took over completely. Unfortunately, the sheriff has his own feelings about goblin kind and refused to hire him. With few other actual prospects he's simply spent his time practicing, and practicing some more, and taking the occasional job as a hired guard or plain domestic laborer.

Hello! And checking in. Still not sure what I'm going to play class-wise but leaning toward goblin, gnome or vanilla human for race/ancestry.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

@Sasha: That works for me and would definitely make sense given the change to Virgo.

So I think between Hannah, Sasha, and the NPC Nathan, that answers three out of the four Relationship questions.

@DMDM: Regarding taking engineer and pilot, I was thinking one of Thea's things was to constantly be trying to improve her fighter 'to squeeze the most out of it plus a bit more.' But seeing how XP works, I'll take Single-Minded for now instead and maybe shoot for Tinkerer at some point down the line. And it seems like there's a it of synergy between single minded and solo mission as well.

So, now I could see Thea as Engineering's or Hannah's go to guinea pig. Anytime there's a need for a test pilot to try out a new drive that could go BOOM!, new unstable weapon system that doesn't always fire, a new sensor suite that detects F-298 from a longer distance, but leaves you blind up close, Thea is willing to give it a try because: "The survival of the human race is at stake here! Whatever I've got to do, I'll do it no matter the risk. What's one life compared to the entire Fleet?"

The rest of her immediate squad know her value and she's earned their respect more times than any of them can count since the disaster of the Corak attack. Thea's always the last one home from a mission, making sure everyone on her team lands before she does. And she may not be the best pilot in the fleet, but she fights hard and is willing to put it all on the line so she's saved a life or two more than a few times. But her recklessness can also put them in tough spots and her mission at all costs can rub some the wrong way, especially Nathan who's now Squad Leader since Thea went and got herself frakked by nearly taking out the hanger with Hannah. Of the squad, Cockroach currently sides with Nathan, while Raven is solidly with Thea. Finally Buzzsaw walks the middle just hoping to live through this all.

Maybe her squad and Gunny's have a friendly 'kill' competition going. It started to just boost morale a bit within the ships crew, but has turned into some serious competition between the squads? The contest hit the civilian fleet and now the Underground offers odds on each pilots/squads chance to take the lead or even survive each mission. There are even interfleet podcasts/journalists covering the blasted things which is driving command crazy because it is a distraction and doesn't always put the military in the best light.

I'll try to get all of this into a set of final semi-coherent background narrative bullets tomorrow along with an actual alias.

@Tareth: I could also switch Hannah to Virgo if you prefer Sagittarius. I was on the fence between the two anyway. If you're changing to Virgo I might switch out Getting to Know All About You for Explorer. I think it clicks a little better with the rest of Hannah's choices.

On the other hand if you want to keep Sagittarius I'd probably choose Virgo's Single-Minded and Stemmed to the Eyeballs since Solo Mission and Squadron Leader don't really seem to fit Hannah.

I'll go ahead and make the leap to Virgo, it probably makes a bit more sense for Thea in the long run. Seems like part of her background could be that she was a Squad Leader but got busted down after the hanger incident. Thus taking the Solo Mission for now and maybe ticking Squad Leader if she survives long enough and behaves herself.

Can't think of too many other NPC's for Thea at this point except maybe the other members of her wing. But her assumed dead husband Rowan could have a role to play. Was he actually captured by the Corax? Thus if he does reappear, he's working for the other side. Or did he survive the attack, but never got in touch with Thea because he is actually in another relationship? Or did he simply go underground to get out of the military and join Unity where he became an enforcer for Claudia. I'll leave it to the DM to decide.

Hrmmm....In light of the no dup playbooks, I think Thea could switch to Virgo, keep both the Pilot and Engineer moves and take up the Solo Mission move. Keep her relationship with Hannah and solo mission fits with her 'riding the edge' mentality.

Her NPC relationship makes a bit of a different twist in that Thea thought she was over her dead husband, but discovered she wasn't at a most inopportune time with Nathan. This resulted in a good sized row (in front of the others in their squad, embarrassing Nathan to no end?). Thus she feels like she's let both Rowan's memory and Nathan down as well as herself. Nathan is still pretty ticked about the whole thing and is either looking elsewhere or looking to even the score in some way.

The whole incident is what led Thea to drinking with Hannah, which lead to the events in the hanger a short while later, and likely to her volunteering for whatever half baked, suicide mission the bloody CAG and XO come up with next.

DMDM: Throwing this out as an option if you don't want duplicate playbooks. Just let me know which way you prefer I go.

rdknight wrote:
If Tareth would like to fill this role with Thea Gillis that would be great. I can see them having some similarities that could make them tight friends.

That works for me!

I could also see combining that with a slightly modified version of the first question into "Who is always up for 'improving' equipment and hardware? What was our most recent upgrade, near disaster? Which I'm thinking in a couple of alcohol crazed days, Thea and Hannah attempted to supercharge her fighter's turbo boost and almost... ("Although, it really wasn't all that bad and honest everything was under control. Don't know why the chief is so hot under the collar about it all. Besides it kinda worked!)... blew up half of Alpha Hanger.

DM: Just out of curiosity are we using the planet names listed in the rules, or are we going with something else like the 12 colonies or the earth system as 'home' based on your write up in Discussion. Would be useful for me just as PC/NPC background fodder.

Thea "Firefly" Gillis, Sagitarrian, Pilot/Engineer +1 Sharp, -1 Warm, Explorer.

Relationship #1: Another pilot, Nathan Vega, in her squad secretly loves her, but she's still grieving the loss of her husband during the attack and has no current interest in any kind of a new romantic relationship. In fact, most think Thea is 'riding the edge' by taking on dangerous missions in an effort to join, Rowan in the afterlife.

Relationship #2: Will wait to see if there's a PC to fill this spot. I'm thinking the 'Who's always up for an adventure?' question would be a good one.

Interested. Reading through the rules now. Will get a PC posted over the weekend.

There are points of similarity. It's PbtA, not the Forged in the Dark system. They both use playbooks, and they both have "success / partial or complicated success / failure" rolls. They're both very narrativist, and they both alternate scenes of action with social / cooldown scenes. The Pressure mechanic is rather similar to FitD's Stress. And with particular regard to BoB, you are running away from a vastly more powerful foe in a universe where the bad guys have already mostly won. So that's familiar.

The PbtA system is mechanically simpler, though -- it's always 2d6, with modifiers that can't go below -3 or above +4. That's really simple! Characters have just 5 stats, which start at either 0, -1, or +1. Also pretty simple.

Doug M.

Cool. Thanks for the summary. I'm a bit swamped the next couple of days, but I'm in and will grab the bundle tomorrow.

GM: I haven't heard of that particular issue before, but if you havent done so already, you might try clearing out your cookies. I know that some of the bigger issues with the boards in the past have been resolved that way.

So here's my thoughts on village creation. How relevant will it be to the actual adventure? Are we going to need to spend a lot of time there initially or are we almost immediately heading out into the wilds in search of the Hand?

If it is the latter then I'd offer a suggestion of letting things develop as we play through the funnel. Using the Flashback mechanic (I guess I should check if these rules use Flashbacks.) or just the usual banter between PC's to describe various aspects of the village and surrounding lands.

If the former, then how much more will we need? We've already got quite a bit to work with. For instance we've already established the following:

* A marketplace
* A lantern maker
* A church with a gloomy, drunken(?) priest who follows St. Ignys' preaching and teachings.
* A nearby river with a ford rather than a bridge that has been unusable at times due to the heavy rains (so we aren't in a desert)
* All the rain implies a fairly temperate region, unless we decide it is an unusually early start to the monsoon season or something.
* Another section of river that has a stretch of terraced falls, perhaps inhabited by a fey, spirit, demon or other creature that could be a threat or possible ally depending on your needs.
* We've got a broken down manor and a minor noble house on its last legs led by a decent, but gullible man with numerous eligible daughters. At least one of whom may be a black widow.
* There's a wanted bandit (whether good or bad is still TBD) in the area.
* Somebody has offered a bounty on the above bandit. Local sheriff, other noble, a group of farmers/merchants tired of having their goods stolen on the way to market?
* There's at least one farm that grows hay.
* Disease has passed through the place in recent years affecting both Benoit and Candace and supposedly several others.
* There's a local rat catcher (my third character who I haven't done a background for yet.)
* The road leads to at least one good sized city.

I also think we've got a Beekeeper and a few other potential PC's that could fill in more details.

Seems like all we really need to get started is a few names. Village and region/nation names would be helpful. And then maybe the name(s) of the local forest or other key terrain features that might be initially relevant to the adventure.

Totally support the idea of a google doc to maybe keep track of this and other NPC's/places/mysteries we add as we go.

And this isn't to say I'm opposed to more setting building, I'm happy to do so if others wish. I just wanted to point out what we've already done and maybe save a little time if we wanted.

I think I'll start with Syrina and Candace and leave that cruel bugger Stitch as a reserve. I've created an alias for all three.

PbtA and DCC sounds like an excellent combination. I really enjoy both systems and would be up for giving this a try. Is there still room for one more?

I'm going to go with Swashbuckler either human or half-elf. GM, are there restrictions on what traits we can use? Is Trap Finder okay to take?

Will start pondering background.

I've had to go back and take a look at PF classes (It's been 3-4 years since I've really dove into the system.) I was actually looking at Hunter myself. But for whatever reason I always had a liking for Swashbuckler but never actually gave it a try, so that might be another direction. Finally, I could give a Summoner a whirl, again just because I've not tried it yet.

I've played plenty of Rogues before, so if that's your liking go for it.

Hi all, here's my two cents, feel free to take or leave as you like.

I'm fine with starting at level 1. While the power level is low, I can use it to 'get to know' the character a bit more without having to worry about all of the crunch. Will we have the ability to 'revise' PC's during those initial 1-3 levels? That said, given PbP speeds, it would be welcome if we end up moving up a little bit faster than usual.

Any particular corner of the Lost Lands you're thinking of starting in? I think I've got a bunch of Frog God stuff in a couple of different Humble Bundles so that'll help me narrow down where to focus any limited background reading I might need to do. If there are lore/canon type details you want us to stick with or incorporate (or not) into backgrounds, posts, etc. then just let me know. I'll often just make odd little background details up on the fly just to add a bit of creative life into a character or NPC.

Sandbox with a few reasonable hooks and potential plot lines works for me.

PF1 is okay. Not my favorite these days as I simply don't have the time or interest in sorting through and managing all the fiddly options as a GM. (Since I've been GMing more than playing, that's been important lately.) Instead I've been enjoying more narrative focused systems like FATE or Blades in the Dark in addition to the somewhat less rules heavy, but putting on some bloat, 5E. I'm also a big fan of DCC just because it is so random, old school, and fairly simple. (I'm eagerly awaiting the new DCC Dying Earth Kickstarter materials). But I know PF1 and totally okay rolling with it.

Typically I can post once a day depending on work and family stuff with maybe a "creative energy recharge break" on a Saturday or Sunday.

As a GM, I'm partial to running 'Theater of the Mind' style on the boards. But as long as I'm not the one coming up with maps and moving everyone's icons around, etc., I'm okay with a more tactical/mechanics oriented game.

Thanks for the invite Obermind. Enjoy your time off and Happy 4th to those celebrating today.

Okay. Will work on crunch and background this week and should have something ready to go by start time next week.

So I'm clear, are we using the racial ability modifiers per the PBH or are we using the newer rules where you get to assign ability bonuses regardless of race?

Hey all, just checking in. For character idea I might take another shot at a Phantom Rogue, but certainly looking at other ideas as well.

Can go either way on Ability scores. I don't mind going entirely old school and rolling, even though it'll probably totally work out bad for me. :)

So I haven't totally landed on a class yet. I keep bouncing between Druid (Circle of Stars), Ranger(Swarmkeeper or Fey Wanderer) or possibly Monk (Way of Mercy).

GM: One question, are you allowing the alternative class options for Rangers that are in Tasha's?

As for what was lost. He was actually a member of the Defenders of Dawning Bastion but all of his memories of that time, his friends, and what happened at the carnival were what was lost. I think he would have ended up going back with Willow and ultimately ends up becoming a lost with no recollection of what brought him to the carnival. He now works as a beekeeper supplying honey (raw, sweets and mead) to the carnival. Not sure if I'll go with Feylost or Witchlight Hand background, but definitely one of the two.

Tareth, long time since we played in a game together. Last time you were playing Vorik in a Kingmaker game I think.

Thanks Willow. Looking forward to jumping in as well.

Hi all. Ms. Rumblemuffin passed me an invite and I am in the process of working up a character for DM Fern. I just wanted to drop in quickly and say I'm excited to join such a great group of characters and players.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

DCC is a great system, would love to jump in on this if there is still room.

GM: I envision Oskar's role to be pretty standard rogue early on. Find and notice traps or ambushes, try and disarm a trap or two, sneak about, stab or shoot from the shadows, get into various kinds of trouble. ;) I didn't go a face route since it looked like we might have bards and others who were interested in taking on that role, but I still might switch a skill or two to at least get prof in Deception or Persuasion.

Despite being haunted by the ghosts of his village and a down and out goddess, he's not actually looking to be a loner. In fact, he's looking for friends and companions who won't run away at the first sight of that faraway look in his eyes or the odd images, feelings, etc. that seem to happen when he's around. Spirits of the dead can be handy when you're fleeing a pack of goblins, but less so if you just want to play cards and share an ale next to the fire.

As for posting rate, I usually do once a day. Weekends can be a bit sketchier, but I do the best I can depending on circumstances. I'm also at the computer and working from home most days so barring a really busy work day, I can occasionally post a bit more often should the situation require it.

Here's some further crunch for my Rogue, Oskar Aglund

Race: Variant Human (Damaran)
Class: Rogue
Background: Haunted One
Level: 1
Feat: Fey Touched (+1 WIS, Misty Step & Dissonant Whispers)

STR: 10 +0
DEX: 16 +3
CON: 10 +0
INT: 12 +1
WIS: 16 +3
CHA: 12 +1

HP: 8
Prof Bonus: +2

Prof Skills: Stealth (+7), Acrobatics (+5), Perception (+7), Investigation (+3), Survival (+5), Sleight of Hand (+5).

Prof Saving Throws: DEX, INT

Weapons: Shortsword, Shortbow, Dagger
Armor: Leather
Equip: Burglar's Pack, Thieves Tools

Background Feature: Heart of Darkness. Those who look into your eyes can see that you have faced unimaginable horror and that you are no stranger to darkness. Though they might fear you, commoners will extend you every courtesy and do their utmost to help you. Unless you have shown yourself to be a danger to them, they will even take up arms to fight alongside you, should you find yourself facing an enemy alone.

So something is starting to come together.

Phantom Rogue, with the Haunted One background.

Right now, I'm thinking human, but that could still change as I shift through the various possibilities.

Some key Background points:

* He is the only survivor of a terrible flash flood that destroyed his village. Whether natural event or caused by a nefarious villain he doesn't know. And doesn't much care for now. Instead, he blames the patron goddess/spirit of the village for not saving the hamlet. The goddess who used the last of her power to escape her shrine and 'leap' her spirit into a simple wooden raven pendant. The same pendent he wears because it is the last gift given him by his wife. To throw it away, would be to throw away the last connection with his family, home, and love. So the patron spirit now haunts him in an attempt to get him to become her priest and build a new congregation and following. So far he adamantly refuses.

* In addition, he's haunted by the spirits of his village. The spirits may be real or may all be in his mind. Either way they all manifest as his friends and kin killed in the flood. Sometimes they help (RP reasons for the manifestation of his Phantom features at 3rd level or doing sneak damage) sometimes they hinder (fumbles or other RP opportunities.)

* He's in the city as a refugee and scraping by working odd jobs or stealing if need be to put food in his belly. Although he won't steal from other poor folk and in fact will go out of his way to help those who have less than he does. Especially orphans or others who've lost their family.

* Eventually he wants to figure out a way to banish the spirit from his wife's gift and be free of the harassing patron spirit for good.

I can flesh this out more and get it into a narrative piece if you decide to go forward with it.

I'm thinking I might go with something like an Explorator with a knack for surviving dangerous environments and a gift for repairing/creating things mechanical from a variety of scavenged parts.

His youth was spent clawing, fighting, and scraping by to survive the slums of a forge world. His curiosity and somewhat free thinking mind got him turned in by others and he barely escaped being 'recycled' by agreeing to risk his life seeking caches and knowledge among the most dangerous and chaos filled parts of space.

To the frustration of his superiors, so far he has survived. This despite more than one close call, the most recent being a nasty daemon that resulted in the bionic replacement of his left arm.

He continues to tinker and follow his mind's mechanical wanderings. Sometimes his creations work just right, sometimes they don't. FATE wise, I still need to come up with Aspects and allocate skills. +4 will be Tech, with Shoot, Survival, Lore, and I'm not sure what yet on the lower rungs.

Looks like we are coming up with our own Stunts as well, so I'll need to contemplate that a bit. I'm assuming special equipment (like a bionic arm) might be a Stunt?

Hey all. Just tapping in to let you know I'm here. Having a busy day today, but will start contemplating PC concepts and aspects as well as diggin into a bit of the 40K fluff.

Are there significant game world events, locations, or other canon that we could use as inspiration (or should try to avoid)?

Right now I'm kind of looking at a Wildfire Druid or a Mercy Monk. Either seem like they might be a reasonable blend of combat and healer.

Ability Scores: No real preference. Each has their perks and drawbacks, but point buy is probably the safest route for insuring some sense of balance.

Initiative: Guiness' suggestion works for me in the PbP format.

Hey all. Just checking in and saying thanks for the invite. I'm looking forward to it. Not sure exactly what I'll play yet. Some of the options in Tasha's are interesting and I haven't had a chance to actually play any of them yet.

Hello all. Looking forward to giving this system a try.

Right now I'm leaning toward Slide or maybe Whisper. As for crew I'm game to try any of them although I would agree the cultists seems less interesting.

And like everyone else, I've no problem with mature themes as long as they are handled maturely.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I'll go ahead and give Medic a go. It seems like there will be plenty of opportunity to switch if it just doesn't fly for me. Seems like it might be easiest to just generate a new PC/Alias with 6XP added on rather than trying to maintain continuity with Leon's character since I don't have a good sense of his background and limited time to weed through all of the posts.

And either Commander or Marshall is fine with me. I guess I just assumed Commander was taken. :) Although I will likely need a bit of help tracking all the things with Marshall.

Continuing to dig in here. It looks like we don't have anyone in the Spymaster campaign role, so I would gladly fill that unless it is taken and I've just missed it.
