Good point. I forget how diverse the setting is sometimes.

My idea for an off-the-wall character. A fighter who dumps intelligence, who has mediocre strength and dexterity, and a boatload of charisma. They’ll pick up Desna’s Shooting Star at level 1 and several free skill ranks by using advanced armor training and advanced weapon training.

So you’ve got this super-nice kinda scrawny-looking person who at the drop of the hat can become super-terrifying and whose skill with a starknife is inexplicable.

'Slightly Above Average Person'

The idea being not only *no* dump stats, but each stat having at least a +1 modifier, with the following scores

For a Human: Str 12, Dex 14, Con 14, Int 12, Wis 14, Cha 13

For a Tengu: Str 12, Dex 14, Con 14, Int 12, Wis 14, Cha 12

Not sure what class I'd put them towards yet, but the idea of having a positive modifier on all rolls is something you don't see or hear of very often. Usually the race is to get MAD down to minimal levels and push it all to SAD.

Interestingly enough, my first ever 3.5 character had solid 14's all across the board.

Looks like they could make a pretty good reach cleric or shaman.

Well...since the thread has apparently been fully revived...most of my characters probably fit into this thread.

Male Gnome, Unchained Monk 5/Sorcerer 1/Dragon Disciple 6...imagine a gnome mashup of Master Roshi from Dragonball and Pai Mei from Kill Bill...3' tall gnome with a pink ponytail who rips his shirt off to reveal he is more ripped than the party barbarian.

Male Sylph, Warpriest (Calistria) 1 / Avenger Vigilante 11...famous male courtesan (gigolo, prostitute, etc) who goes out at night as a spirit of vengeance type hero. Wields a whip, takes the Sylph feats for at-will flight.

Female Human, Tattooed Sorcerer 12 (Undead Bloodline), Racial Heritage: Gnome feat to allow her to count as a Gnome to gain access to the gnome racial feats related to illusion spells...focuses on illusion magic and themes it all to look like necromancy. Super goth/emo, obsessed with death.

Male Human, Alchemist 12...takes lots of weird mutation related discoveries (tentacle, extra arm, wings, tumor familiar, etc) Obsessed with curing himself of these mutations, but always just makes things worse instead of actually curing himself.

Male Nagaji, Bloodrager 5 / Dragon Disciple 7...swears he is born from the blood of Gold Dragons, not Naga...wanted to become a paladin but had no divine connection, still tries to act like a paladin. Slowly becoming more draconic as he levels up, likes to point it out to people. "See, I told you I was born of the Dragons, not those foul Naga." *spits*

Those are just a few of mine off the top of my head.

Lazy Person: a Promethean Alchemist whose Homunculus does all the alchemy. And creates all the elixirs. And does all the fighting, supported by a Tumor Familiar and maybe a Detached Hand or some-such.

All the while, the Alchemist just stands back and shoots the occasional crossbow bolt. You know, when he can be bothered to.

I played a Sylph Pack Mule for awhile in Emerald Spire, it was pretty fun and surprisingly useful. Took Cut your Losses to help with looting, Took Nameless One for flavor, and the classic sylph feats to fly.

Said Sylph was a nameless merchant, looking for rare wares to ship back to his parent company. Eventually when I got my Fly speed, the party nicknamed him the "SkyBoat", on account of him ferrying the party around with his absurd carrying capacity.

(As an aside, Cut your Losses is such an under rated feat. It's great when the battle takes an unexpected turn- Like, say, when your Paladin somehow failed his will save, and starts attacking the party just as you defeat the boss. I'll always be greatful I remembered to check the unconscious bosses' vitals before going through the magical healing spring.)

The Lord of the Birds

Tengu Inquisitor (Sacred Huntsmaster) with Eagle Domain. Roc animal companion and Hawk (Valet) familiar, all sharing the same Teamwork Feats.

Same can be done with Cleric + Animal domain + Eagle domain, minus the Teamwork Feats thing.
But unlike Inquisitors, Clerics can cast Power Word X.

In case you were wondering what X is, well...everybody knows that Bird is the Word.

Since this character is already a complete non-specialist, taking a single level each in a whole bunch of mostly martial classes might be the way to go. Maybe go for something that gives you Dex to damage early on? The result is a just-about adequate fighter with lots of odd niche abilities.

A level 10+ Psychic who uses Ghost Syrup to become permanently incorporeal and then uses Possession to steal bodies and interact with the world.

Edit: On second thought, your type wouldn’t change, so you’d die of hunger or thirst unless you found a way around that.

Ponymancer?
Sorcerer would be a good choice for your class, with the abyssal or primal bloodline to buff your summons a little bit.
Halfling is a good choice because of the bonus on charisma. There's an alternative racial trait that gives a bonus to ride and handle animal checks.
Spells, mount and communal mount ofcourse.
Feats, augment summoning, superior summoning. It's not that complicated.

And then the funny stuff starts. Do you need cover? Mount! Do you need cannon fodder? Communal mount! Do you need to deactivate a trap? Mount! Do you need something to barricade that tunnel? Communal mount!

The possibilities are endless!

You forget the greatest Mount exploit: Alter Summoned Monster. Because sometimes you need a pony that becomes an angel but still hangs around a while.

One I've been working on as an NPC: an Eldritch Guardian who uses Share Spells and a scroll (or otherwise finds a way) to cast Alter Self on his goat protector familiar to turn her into an elf (say), then pops a Greater Hat of Disguise on her elf head for infinite Alter Self to stay in that form (yeah I know, you have to activate it every 3 mins, but let's just say that's feasible). So now he has a humanoid with all of his combat feats to chill with. He gives her a ring of eloquence, and now she can even talk with everyone.

This guy, he's wanted by the law and by the criminals and everyone else--so he carefully arranges poisons and buffs to fail the first save of a scroll of Baleful Polymorph, but pass the second save. Now he's a little bird with his own mind intact. His elf familiar picks up his falcata (or hornbow) and his other gear, and dons his armor.

These days he's riding around on his elf familiar who has all of his combat feats. Protector works both ways, so she has effectively the same HP that he does. To the outside world, she's a moderately competent fighter (decent STR) with a pet and a verbal tic. Nobody knows why she seems so... familiar.

These two work with the party (hired to hunt him down, perhaps) until there's enough trust built up between them (he realizes they won't betray him for money, etc. With some parties I've played with this might actually never happen)--and then, during some particularly nasty fight (and especially if elf goat's somehow incapacitated), she will demand that the party cast Dispel Magic on her birdie. Suddenly, backup appears!

...I, uh, I may also have somewhat watered-down builds for using this as a PC, including ones that don't rely on the Greater Hat of Disguise. I've been meaning to post an Advice thread about it to get the last details figured out. Maybe soon.

Nope:

"The new creature must be an option from a spell of the same level or lower as the spell that summoned the target."

So, while you can transform an angel into a pony, you cannot do the opposite.

Halfing Gun Slinger/Inspired Blade/Alchemist/Master Chymist

Doesn't reach full crazy until lvl0, but at that point he's Dr. Jekyl/Mr. Hyde. His normal persona is refined, uses a rapier only when he must; he would rather be at home drinking tea and tending to his cat. His mutagen persona is the Hulk; gunplay, bombs, wanton destruction except against cats. The normal persona's love of cats bleeds over and the Hulk goes out of his way to protect any kind of feline.

I know about the exploit, but this thread is about crazy/fun character concepts. And it wouldn't be a ponymancer if you'd summon angels and demons instead.

I made a permanently fox formed Kitsune pyrokineticist. I named him Mozilla.

I used the Ponyfinder rules to make a being known as the Tooth Fairy. He's a Pegasus invested heavily into flight and vital strike and fleet. He hit 120 move airborne, and because he used the otherwise not particularly powerful 3pp Time Thief he was able to use his limited daily resource to make that an 'extra' move action a number of times per day. He would bolt in from hella far away, vital strike you with an EARTH BREAKER and fly away while you picked up your face. He was obsessed with teeth, and the Earth breaker was carved as a giant molar.

Spheres of Power allows for biological poisons that actually work decent in combat, I made Belladonna, Toxic Shapeshifter. She can do multiple limbs of claw attacks with 2/round to all three physical scores. It only takes a scratch.

I have two ideas.

1: An Oread Bloodrager. Take the fire elemental bloodline. Depending on if you have a cool GM or not, sacrifice a feat to make him a Large creature. Give him a Hawaiian sounding name. He's basically a walking volcano. Aloha.

2: A blind Ranger who specializes in killing medusae, basilisks, cockatrices, and any other monsters with a vision based petrify attack. Frequently delves into dark places and patrols the forest by night without a second thought. Who needs torches?

Goblin Hunter on a skunk mount. He rides it backwards.

Cockatrices have a touch based petrify attack. It's good to know these things before you go hunting.

A terrakineticist looks like fun, but you might want to have some control over what the terrain about you actually is. Enter the amazing tools of manufacture and play a dwarf wanting to build roads everywhere.

I was enamored of the Goblin Feats Roll with It and Tangle Feet. I envision a Goblin Monk with Panther and Snake Style, Mobility, Roll with It and Tangle Feet. A little green bowling ball running around the battlefield tying everybody's shoelaces together, and when he fails an Acrobatics Check and provokes an Attack of Opportunity, Panther Claw. If the AoO misses, the Goblin gets an AoO through Snake Fang. If the AoO hits, Roll with It lets the Goblin take no damage by being sent skittering around the battlefield like a little gree bowling ball.

I always wanted to roll up a siege wizard necromancer with a literal skeleton crew to carry around my ballista. Dip inspired blade swashbuckler for eldritch knight prerequisites and added defense.

The last thing my son and I got started talking about was a STR build with a large rock. Just a 30 or so effective carry weight x3 for heavy load belt and a huge rock. CMD to "piggy back" on someone? Take 1400 pounds on your back. PINNED & HELPLESS! (and taking crushing damage)... alas the mechanics for this don't exist in PF. The closest is just gaining a heavy load status. No "wtf is on me! help me get it off!" status. We figured it would be funnier if it was a halfling. They have some feat that lets them share a square with monsters and stuff (and run up on them). Sovereign Glue FTW!

I suppose you could add entangled, grappled, over encumbered and suffocating rules together to approximate that situation, it would be DM Fiat and very rude. ;)

I loved to play a reincarnated gnome dragon sorcerer who came back as a kobold, then tried to get along as gnome with disguise and illusions.

He got hired for a Diplomatic Mission to befriend a tribe of kobolds where the gnome was supposed to disguise as kobold.

The resulting confusion of the other Player chars was hilarious.

Glippli Paladin - Play as Frog/Glen from Chrono Trigger, also lay on hands with tongue.

Paladin + Celestial Bloodrager - *Angry smiting noises*

Still of the serious concepts i think the one that might be the most fun is the character i put together that is Ranger + Horizon Walker + Red Mantis Assassin. A edgy kids dream, teleport stabbing and nothing is personal <3

I help out a friend of mine statting NPCs. At one point, I was asked to provide a vigilante with Many Guises, who happened to be a dwarf. The end result was an Avenger milking the fact that they don't take ACP to Stealth for all it's worth, while using an adamantine pick if the lock won't open. Also, they took a talent that gave SLAs just to qualify for transformation sequence.

Normal, upstanding member of a theive's guild.

Son and I discussed a Homunculus and permanent magic jar character, with a clone in backup storage in case the person (in homunculus' body) dies to far from his real body. Seemed feasible at the time, but we didn't really flesh it out (get it, wink wink, nudge nudge).

Tengu twins, Huginn and Muninn.
One is Tengubushi-Fighter/Tengukensei-Magus,
The other is a Shigenjo-Oracle/Swordmaster-Rogue,
Both gestalted, not multiclassed.

Another fun one would be the schizophrenic archer, a Witchguard-Ranger/Hexenhammer-Inquisitor, who thinks he is a ranger protecting a witch sometimes, and other times thinks he is an Inquisitor hunting witches. Once again, gestalted not multiclassed.

I have an NPC that I built like a PC. He's a gestalt Cleric/Unchained Barbarian. He has the War and Rage domains, the feat Mad Magic so he can cast when raging, and a bunch of natural attacks from rage powers, items, and feats. He's a homebrew race somewhat based on D&D's Dragonborn and can take the Lizardfolk feat Dangerous Tail so he can have a tail attack.

I also have a pair of twin PCs that are meant to be played together. I'm still working on their builds but one is a Dashing Thief Swashbuckler and the other is an Unchained Phantom Thief Rogue.

It's been a while since I thought of this guy, forgive me. *Cracks knuckles*

Kensai Black Blooded Magus, putting all his money and resources into making the blade stronger with crafting. It raises the blades ego score so high the Magus can't save against it, essentially making the Magus the thrall of the sword, the Magus is almost irrelevant to the character. The Magus was a street urchin who happened to be nearby when the sword needed an arm.

With that in mind, here's the much more important backstory of the sword.

An older wizard, with a Raven familiar, developed a selfish love for a young librarian. He courted her, he was rejected, he tried to backstab his way through by buying the library and pressuring her, he had her sweetheart silently dispactched overseas at great risk to his personal standing... And he was caught, denounced, and ready to be cast from his position with the town.

He tried to enchant a blade to float through town at night and kill the girl who brought him such trouble while he was drinking in the bar, a perfect alibi. When he failed the magic the third time, he got angry and broke his own raven's neck and threw it whole into the pot of metal and curses. The resulting explosion killed him, wrecked his workshop, and forged an intelligent blade that shifted form between a sword with a blade which was the wing of the Raven, a trident which was it's talon, and an axe which was the beak. The blade was imbued with the old wizards hatred of librarians and libraries, but not voluntarily. It doesn't care. It's a broken weapon with a dead wielder, a sacrificed familiar who resents it's killer. The quest it undertakes is one of desperation to shut up the angry voice of the wizard, to destroy all libraries and librarians because the mixed and failed curses didn't provide a specific enough quest to stop at the death of the girl.

To that end, the sword took over the weak will of the boy it found with a broken mind and small gifts of magic, and uses him to strengthen itself with crafting and such. The goal of the blade is to become so strong by force of will that it can take over any being.

Mechanically, the Magus has some crit feats, leading to improved impaling critical. The move action to remove the blade implies that they have to grab the sword, and doing so means they save against Ego, the blade. If they fail, and they will, it directs the actions. The blade eventually got an ego score +20 over the will save of LUCIFER HIMSELF.
That's right, the stat block of an evil god on d20pfsrd shows he's weak enough that by level (18-20, somewhere end game but it's been a few years) he can no longer save against an intelligent blade's ego score even on a natural 20, if the PC puts every ounce of gold and effort into upgrading that ego score at every chance.

Thus armed with a perfect host, the sword intends to destroy the Akashic Record, library of all libraries, and any gods present to defend it. It hopes the voices will quit screaming when even the idea of a librarian is destroyed from the world.

"Don't you dare ignore me, you petty whelp! He isn't the one speaking to you, the meat sack is incompetent! If you won't address me properly I'll run you through!"

I love it. And may "borrow" ALL OF IT!!! Evil laugh fades to silence...

Anything starting with the phrase "I found this in Gonzo".

I would very much like to hear about how this "street urchin" had acquired such hatred that the blade's mind would not be altered. We the Bound do not fully dictate our own goals, rather we merely take our partners' goals as our own. While I often lament seeing once-good members having innocent blood forced upon them, this destructive and depraved individual could have been redeemed quite easily for the same reasons.

rules text:
PRD, Bladebound wrote:

A black blade always has the same alignment as its wielder and even changes its alignment if its wielder does. The blade typically works toward its wielder's goals, but not always without argument or backlash.

[...]
Due to its flexible and powerful nature, a black blade has a nonstandard ego progression.

I made this alias after a couple topics came up very close to one another that assumed Black Blades were by default Evil. I bring it out whenever I think in-character musings of a weapon that's been on crusades for hundreds of years might be relevant

I had a 5e campaign with a shattered +5 vorpal sword, I can't remember its name but I found it on dndwiki or something like that, anyways, you were compelled to find the other pieces, starting with just the +1 vorpal dagger piece each additional piece magically forged and added another +1, until you had a +5 vorpal bastard sword.

Anyways, the possessed blade idea is something I very much enjoy, and will either NPC in my next campaign or will introduce the table to the concept if they want to run with it as their own character.

Rules for that thing may say one thing, but the concept can be worked into existence even against the most prudish rules.

Reminds me of the old Elric of Melnibone books...frail character finds godly intelligent sword...spends the rest of his life fighting it for control. Good books, if a bit dated.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

so, when i run rise of the runelords for my party, they didn't have a rogue to take care of traps etc. so i had one of the goblins surrender and turn over a new page in life. he started as an unchained rogue for the first 3 levels using improvised weapons, catch of guard and disarming enemies for making them flatfoot when no flanking was found. then he moved on in life after finding the HOLY book (a book full of holes and in pictographs, since written words are bad and steal your goblins thoughts etc) he multiclassed into a living grimore.
as a class it's the only way so far to be proficiant in an improvsied weapon (so you can take feats for it etc) and the grimore can be enchanted like a normal weapon.
planed on him getting one enchanted then picking an even holier book-has MORE HOLES. and designating it as his weapons so he can use both - 2 weapon fighting with 2 books hitting the unbelivers with the (words)pictures of god. (he actually had a very high to hit what with the class +1 to hit with said weapon, the faets added and the +2 trait for improvised weapon.
he also liked to explain the pictures in his book as stories that prove goblins are better then longshankes in everything. ('the stupid longsahnk and the wise right size goblin' was a hit with other humanoids)

I have a multiclassed witch, rogue, kobold that believes he is a paladin. He took the undersized mount feat and believes his familiar (a giant flea) is a divine mount.

I have a few really decent ones:

In Skull and Shackles I am playing a small-sized Vanara swashbuckler (mouser) 1/ Unchained Rogue (Vexing Dodger) 4/ Fighter (Cad) x named Jack the Monkey.
Key abilities: Shikigami Style, Shikigami Mimicry, Shikigami Manipulation, Catch off Guard, Greater Dirty Trick, Catch off Guard, Sneak Attack, Devout worshiper of Arshea, the empyreal lord of sexual abandon.
Mechanically he steps into your square, climbs up your leg, whaps you on the head with a coconut (or traveler's any-tool) then gives up his sneak attack to blind you.
Thematically he climbs you and humps you in the face, then spends an hour talking about how great it was. (look up Arshea's devotion, if you don't already know)

In Wrath of the Righteous I am playing a Human Lunar Oracle 1/Warpriest x of Desna named Charlie Halfhand.
Key features: Fate's Favored, 20 charisma, noble scion of war, Divine fighting technique Desna's Shooting Star, Startoss Style, Oversized Starknife held in two hands.
Mechanically he has Charisma to: Initiative, To hit, Damage, AC, and Reflex saves. Additionally he focuses in luck bonuses, getting the most out of his Fate's Favored.
Thematically: He's basically mr magoo. he trips when demons swoop in for the kill, he happens to glance away when bright lights flash in his face, when he attacks, he closes his eyes and hurls his Returning Starknife at the nearest thing and it ricochets around wildly before somehow bouncing back to him.

I have a pfs character that, at 8th level, can grapple large and smaller creature up to 20 feet away from him and reposition them into flank with his buddies. as an immediate action. on their turn. he's also a full natural attacker. it's a spicy meatball.

I'm currently running a venerable barbarian that is convinced he is a wizard and uses UMD to emulate spellcasting, serves as the party face, and is heavily invested in spellcraft and knowledge skills.

Oh, somehow I completely forgot my clouded vision/deaf life oracle who i roleplay as mute. She writes notes in wizard's spellbooks and tears the pages out to talk out of combat, has "Read Lips" and "Taldan Sign Language" as 2 of her 12 languages, and can cast heightened continual flame strong enough to counter supernatural darkness. She also carries a whistle to blow when she needs something in combat. She carries a +1 adamantine bardiche she isn't proficient with, a Tower shield she isnt proficient with, wears +1 deathless spell storing full plate she isn't proficient with, has a -15 initiative, and commonly takes 300-400 damage per adventure.

She has 2 kills in her entire career, a skeleton she killed with a shield bash in Crypt of the Everflame, and a random vampire spawn she channeled to dust in some scenario I cannot recall the details of.

She has saved 8 pathfinder's lives with Breath of Life CL 10 cast through a metamagic rod of reach followed by quickened reach cure critical wounds for a total of 9d8 + 22 healing.

Also, i have a level 5 comic book hero. no levels of vigilante.
Hugh Man appears at all debriefings and gathers the pertinent information for his client, Skeleton Man. before the party sets out he tells them he has to go get his client and then they can be off, walks around a corner for 2 minutes, and comes back without his shirt on. d20 - 2 dc disguise check.
following an accident as a small child in which he broke his arm Skeleton Man was exposed to dangerous Divination rays. these rays revealed that he was in fact part man, part skeleton. yes so too as a centaur is part man part horse, he is part man, part skeleton.
He uses his skeleton eyes to detect the dastardly minions of Skin Man, which he brings to justice with his Calcium Strength and Skeletal fists. He's only recently picked up a weapon which with to fight his foes after seeing how effective reach weapons are at subduing foes: The Bane of Skin Man, a tri-point double-edged sword.
