As a GM I appreciate the evolution of the rules that have been provided here. There has been a lot of care and thought put towards balance and ease of play without sacrificing depth.

I must say I’m disappointed to see so much outcry from my fellow gamers regarding the change and perception that the game has been made simple and less complex or limited.
Let’s face it, there is a difference between depth and complexity. I see many comments posted here and elsewhere stating that the game is more simple as though that were a bad thing. I personally feel that having a game that plays well while still providing a wealth of options and tools is a win for my group and I hope for Paizo as well.

Pathfinder was originally built on the bones of a system released nearly 20 years ago, it is absolutely time to update and modernize. From corrections to shortcomings that have been present from the beginning and excellent updates that may seem superficial (layout and book design) the new edition comes together to make everything so much easier to learn and understand. Bringing in new players is great too and is what keeps the companies we love making games well into the future!

Many people feel threatened by change and as new rules arrive, so too do the fears. Like all well designed rpgs, the main goal is to have fun and if there are elements your table does not like, rules and game elements can easily be changed or omitted so that everyone has fun. I encourage all to try first and not theorycraft as actual play often goes differently (and better) than one may expect.

Lastly I want to say how happy I am that this is a great jumping on point for many gamers which makes the game approachable and is healthy for the hobby! For those concerned with options not available from First Edition, give it time there is a ton of content to keep us busy while Paizo roles out updated fan favourites over future releases. First Edition still exists for all who love it, but I can definitely say it’s refreshing for my friends and players to be able start fresh without the intimidation and feeling the need to buy into the massive library of content from First Edition.

Some standout things I love about the new edition:

- Character creation—> Choosing ancestry, background and class and getting stars, skills and many many feat choices feels awesome and adds personality right from the start. (Also as GM, I appreciate having balanced characters at the table so no one player feels like a chump due to the randomness of die rolls. Do players ever want to keep characters with lousy rolled stats? I get the appeal of randomness, but if we just reroll again until we’re closer to party average then it’s not really random anyway)

- Feats and Leveling —> Having so much choice is wonderful. From general feats to race and class and skill specific feats, there is so much option for players to choose from in a nicely structured way! Getting something fun and meaningful at each level is great and gives everyone something to look forward to each level... not just level 3 *cough cough*:P

- Skill levels and Rarity —> These are great concepts that makes investment in skills continue to matter for players so those who are better stand out as such and adds additional flavour at top level. For Rarity I appreciate having some guidance and expectation as to how common things are in the game. It’s not the players that decide anyway but keeps expectations in check and if I feel it’s appropriate I can always change or add anything anyway. So it’s useful AND flexible.

- 3 Actions in combat —> this system is really elegant and keeps things running smoothly. The game turns are reasonable and everyone knows what to expect without some crazy action economy shenanigans that used to happen.

This has gotten longer than I expected so I’ll wrap it up.
Pathfinder Second Edition is a great investment and a huge book full of value. More options are already in the horizon which should expand in a solid way as well.

My only ask for Paizo is to not go overboard on frequent releases. I get the need for rapid expansion at the start to fill out gaps as needed in the game but keeping things spread out allows customers to feel they can keep up without purchase fatigue.

Pathfinder: The Next Generation

I'm a big fan of the new edition, but let me first state what it is not.

While this edition is more streamlined than PF1 in some respects, it's not like 5e -- it's a much richer and denser ruleset. And while it has less unnecessarily complicated bits than PF1, and plays more quickly than PF1 in many respects, it's a dense rule system. Character creation is a good example of this: while you can quickly make a character without thinking much about it (and end up with something pretty good), there are generally a lot more viable options than there were in core-PF1, and sussing these out can require more time investment than in core-PF1.

The good:
--A much richer set of character choices during character creation.
--Several features of character creation (e.g. background and racial options) do a nice job of giving your character the beginnings of a backstory, even if that's the sort of thing you don't think about.
--Many more viable multiclassing options.
--Magic has been nicely balanced: a lot of weak options have been made stronger, and a lot of broken options have been scaled back.
--Spellcasters are a lot more fun to play: they're vastly more effective at low levels, and less overwhelmingly powerful at high levels.
--There aren't really any "dud" classes. Fighters, Rogues and Monks (all weak classes in PF1) are now powerhouse classes with a number of interesting possible builds.
--The revised bulk system and the strength ratings for armor make Strength a more appealing attribute for classes which aren't strength-focused.
--The three action economy makes combat run smoother.
--Simplified combat maneuvers and grappling rules.
--The critical success/success/failure/critical failure system makes checks less binary and more interesting.
--Level-scaling and number-balancing make lone higher-level enemies much scarier.
--The rarity system implements some nice rule-of-thumb guidance to GMs regarding potentially game-breaking spells or items.

The bad:
--Charisma is still underpowered compared to the other stats, and still a prime target for dumping.
--The Alchemist looks a little less interesting and impressive than the other classes, though it's certainly a decent option (unlike the PF1 Monk or Rogue).
--Some new options (snares, alchemical items, downtime) feel a little under-supported (though I'm sure that will change soon).

The pretty:
--The book is gorgeous.
--The book is massive. If you like holding real tomes, you'll like the heft of this book. (It's so big it might be worth opening it carefully the first time; you can find videos about how to open big books the first time to help the binding last longer on YouTube.)


Absolute best Pathfinder edition yet.

I was not very excited with the state of the rules during the initial state of the playtest. I can now confirm they took all of the feedback to heart, changed what needed changing and came out with an absolutely spectacular final version.
Rules-wise it is far superior to Pathfinder 1: the action is streamlined and simplified (especially on the players part and in the way the book teaches you how to learn and play the game), while not only keeping the depth of the pathfinder game and setting, but even adding to it quite a lot. As an example, classes are now modular, which means you get to choose exactly how you build and progress through them. This brings a mind-blowing amount of customization potential which guarantees an impressive longevity.
Furthermore, the tools in the hands of the GM have been greatly improved, making it easier to tell the story the way you want without sacrificing either roleplay or game mechanics. I like to support storytelling with quick and interesting mechanics, especially around the use of skills, and that's exactly what they have expanded in this edition, among other things. The amount of work and polish that went into this is evident in every paragraph.

In conclusion, I cannot overstate how much I love this edition! In my opinion, this is now the best fantasy roleplaying game out there, and my new standard of reference.

In the Equipment section a "lesser potion of healing" costs 3 gold, in the treasure & magical items section it costs 4 gold. Which one is right?

1 gp is not a big deal. But this is not 1st edition. I like the silver based system myself. I would use the higher of the two. I like healing to take more effort. Another idea would be see what other potions of that level cost and match it up. Wait for a second printing in order for them to fix all this stuff.


Anyone know what time it becomes available? Midnight or in the morning?

It should be up at the top by the Review and discussion tabs.


Underneath Add PDF, there should be a clickable "(in your downloads)" once you've purchased it.

Under Product Availability, there should be another link to My Downloads.

And above the Search This Thread box on this page, there should be a Download (1) tab to click, but there's a bug that sometimes hides it in Product Discussion threads.

You can also go to My Account>Digital Content from any page.


Log out of the site and pretend you didn't know the forums existed. When you go to the website, click Store, etc - are you able to find a PDF of the CRB, or only the hard copy? I wasn't. Fortunately, I knew the forums existed and figured there'd be a direct link in here.

I'm not going to make this a capital case because, honestly, it may be intentional on Paizo's part as a business decision. And that's fine. Just wanted to point it out in case it was an oversight.

Right there. As Rysky says, they don't have separate product pages for digital and physical copies; you just click which one you want.

Maybe they are included in the lost omens character guide???

Also: look at 2e.aonprd.com/ for the official Pathfinder Reference Dokument website. All the content from the Core rulebook (mostly without art and in different order) and Bestiary (not complete yet, but will get Monster Art) is available for free online.

I don't think he drowns. I think he only made it halfway. I presume that he either would have to turn back or try a different strategy.

In which case this seems like an odd example to explain skill DCs to a beginner, readers should not have to "presume" anything. Why start with an ambivalent case where the reader doesn't know what happens halfway through?

Starting a rulebook with a rule example that already sparks a forum discussion (guilty as charged here) sets an unfortunate precedence. Besides that the example itself is odd with the critical success being necessary to complete the deed. Does this mean that beating the DC is not enough for skill checks anymore, but crits are needed for instant completition now?

This touches FAQ/errata territory, which it really should not being the very first beginner example of a rule.

But to be clear: No real negativity meant here, I am happy to see the 2nd edition out and eager to read through the book. Thanks to all parties involved for the hard work!


I agree that it is a confusing example. I'm just guessing what it means, myself..


The example seems to have incomplete data: table 4-4 on page 242 lists distances you achieve with one climb/swim action.
The example on page 10 doesn't include any distances, so it seems the river is wider than the character (we don't know it's speed either) can swim with a success, but narrower than the character can swim with a critical success.

The part about the drowning begins with "Had your result been less than 16," – I see no problem there.

Playing devil's advocate here: The problem is that the most important part of the example - simple DC success - is the one that leaves you literally hanging in the water without resolve. How is this is a good first beginner example on page 10 of a rulebook?

And even a more seasoned player (myself) wondered why the critical success was needed?! Seemingly something that is explained 232 pages later and an odd case that various players likely never encountered before. Personally I never had to make that role in years of playing PF1.

The authors have my deepest respect, but they could sport a more "educational" writing style that results in more answers than questions. I had hopes that PF2 would be more precise in writing. And maybe it is, I only just began to read. But the first rule example proved to be a stumbling block already and that does everyone an unnecessary disservice.


The Druid Spellcasting description says you start with 5 cantrips, but the spells per day chart says 4. Is that i typo?

Rule Error?

Fighter Dedication requirements list Strength 14, Dexterity 14 with a COMMA. Shouldn't this be an OR depending on which primary stat would have been chosen? The other Dedications are based on the primary stat and this feels like a high cost to buy in when a Fighter doesnt HAVE to have 14 or higher in both stats at creation. It's a choice to shouldn't that comma be an OR?

Seems like a high cost to buy into a dedication.

In the beta I believe it was 16 Str or Dex

Also, it was a question for a developer, not sure you would have knowledge of what was or was not intended when it comes to errors and because of our previous encounter I wouldn't want to take what you say, or you to take what I say in any way other than the way it was intended. This was intended for someone who wrote the rules, unless you are one of those peeps and are missing the tag? Or have a link to where a dev clarified?

Still on the fence about picking this up. Loving the idea that +10 or -10 also results in crit result (fun and intuitive!), not loving that there is a separate list of results for every possible action (stopping game to consult a table!).

Also, you kinda' needed three spreadsheets open to run Pathfinder combat past level 10. How unplayable does PF2 get at higher levels?

You don’t need to consult a table, the degrees of success are on each ability it’s applicable to, so you’re doing no more referencing than in 1e.

From what I’ve glimpsed combat is running a lot smoother. The rules and monster stats are up on Archives of Nethys, the official PRD if you wanna check them out :3


What does the Barbarian Animal Instinct "Deer" do? The 'CHARGE' weapon trait is not defined anywhere in Core Rulebook or Bestiary.

$80 for my deluxe CRB and it's already obsolete needing errata? :-(
