Well, according to the July Subscription thread, subscribers could get their PDFs as early as July 8, which is just slightly more than teo weeks away!

Pathfinder Companion, Maps Subscriber; Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber

Has it been clarified whether PDFs will be granted upon shipment, as usual, or embargoed until release date, as they were with P1e's release?

Paizo Charter Superscriber; Pathfinder Companion, Pathfinder Accessories Subscriber; Starfinder Charter Superscriber

Oh, good question. However, books could arrive as early as July 9th, so what's the point of the embargo?

I don't think so.

The accessories subscription is going live on Monday (hopefully) and I'm guessing they wanted all the subscription stuff in place before making their "here's how it works" blog. Fingers crossed they clarify things like the GenCon pickup and PDF releases as well.

To be fair, red dragons looong precede the birth of Dungeons and Dragons.

I'm sorry, I've not preordered anything before on Paizo. Does it mean if you preorder, those orders are shipped out to customers on the 8th? Or is that just when you have inventory? Reason why I ask is the August 1st date.

Ever get an answer on this? I was thinking of ordering as well but want to be sure...

We haven’t had an answer, but as a longtime customer I’m pretty confident that’s just a display glitch (the site has recently had some other, similar issues with other products).

Again, I’m nobody official, but my understanding is that whether you preorder, subscribe, collect at GenCon or buy from a local brick and mortar store the book won’t be available until August 1st. They will start shipping prior to August 1 but what they would ideally like to achieve would be everyone receiving their books at exactly the same day.

Having said THAT new customers may not be aware that it is very rarely right to preorder from Paizo - you’re nearly always better off subscribing for the following reasons:

1. It isn’t obligatory to stick with a sub, so if you just want to “try” the rules, there’s no embarrassment in subscribing then cancelling if you get the book and decide you don’t want future releases
2. Some combination of subscriptions gets you a discount on the price that isn’t available for preorders (the exact details of subscription discounts for PF2 haven’t yet been announced)
3. If you subscribe, you get a free PDF if most Paizo books purchased through that subscription (but only if you are subscribed when the book comes out).

The potential exception this month is if you want the Core book but not the bestiary (or vice versa). It MAY be possible for customer service to arrange this for you, but I’m not sure.

Paizo’s shipping costs are generally on the high side (the subscriber discount can make a big impact on this), so if you are concerned about cost and don’t want the PDF then it would make more sense to preorder from a different online retailer really. It’s really hard to come up with a scenario where preordering something from Paizo that is available via a subscription is the best option for anyone.

Okay serves me right for not reading the subscription thread first before posting here.

They will start shipping on July 8th - they obviously think that’s how long it will take them to chug through all the orders by August 1st.

That means it’s possible you’d get a subscription/preorder before August 1st but note that there’s no guarantee. Some copies each month don’t arrive until after the streetdate and it’s the luck of the draw where you are in the process.

Could SOMETHING please be added to the product listing to differentiate this from the PF1 Core Rulebook?

It doesn't say PF2e anywhere in the description that I can see, nor does it in the "see also" links.

"Hello everyone.

I have some unfortunately bad news to pass along this time. I spoke to the tech team this morning and they have informed me that they will not be able to have the code in a place where we can reliably do non subscription pre order pickup at GenCon in time for the deadline that the truck needs to leave for the show. So we will not be able to do pre order pickup at the show except for subscriptions.

If you have a pre order you need to cancel so you can buy a book at the show (we will have them available there) please let us know and we can get it cancelled.

Keep in mind that with Katina in a new department, Sara out of the office, and me taking on Sara's duties until she is back the three of us that are here (but mostly Sam and Virginia) are working to get through the inbox and boards as fast as we can, but there is a backlog."

So if we have subscriptions and pre-ordered items, the inclusion of the pre-ordered items in the list of what we can pick up at Gen Con is in error, is that right?

Edit: Specifically, the two questionable items on my list are the Pathfinder Condition Card deck (I do not have a Pathfinder Accessories subscription and don't plan to get one at present, barring unexpected news about Paizo Advantage for PF2 before they run the auths next week.) and volume 6 of the Dawn of Flames Starfinder Adventure Path (which people who aren't going to Gen Con won't see until late August).

I'm still confused about the subscription thing, as I live in Denmark. When I try to place an order, the website doesn't show shipping price(s), which makes me a little iffy :P

And, will the hardcover version be shippable by July 8th? My local stores all show August.

Subscriptions are scheduled to begin shipping July 8th, but they don't expect to get the last ones out until August 2nd. There's no way to know if your order will ship toward the beginning or toward the end.

If you want to know how much shipping will be, put a copy of the CRB (or whatever you're subbing to) in your cart and click "Proceed to Checkout." From there, click on box 2, Shipping, and you'll see your options and the costs. From there, you can go back to box 1, Shopping Cart, and remove the item(s).

I'm going to go ahead and warn you, shipping the CRB to Denmark will be expensive; it's too heavy to qualify for the cheapest international shipping options.

P2e books aren't supposed to be in stores until August 1, so that's why your local stores tell you that. They (should) have it before then, but they're not supposed to sell it until street date.

41,99 dollars in shipping, damn xD

Guess I'll wait and buy it here. Would'a been nice to get the PDF's "free", but ah well. :P

When the PDF becomes available on August 1st, it should be a lot cheaper than the book -- but it will almost certainly be a huge download.

I'm in Denmark and have tried to subscribe, but it isn't worth it. Paizo declares the full value on all packages (as they should), so everything over 80 DKK (~12$) will get hit with 25% VAT on the price of content and shipping and the 160 DKK (~25$) handling fee.

If you (general you) don't have a local gaming store you want to help support (I don't have one) then the cheapest option to Denmark I found, when I pre-ordered the books, was from Book Depository (yes, they include VAT, but have free shipping from the UK) - search for p2 pathfinder on the site to find the other books.

Cool, thanks! I've been searching for the cheapest preorder site, but skipped Book Depository because the .com domain implied they ship dhom the states.

In general, there is one shipping window for each month's releases. I don't believe the warehouse cares if it's a preorder or a subscription; they just tend to ship, say, all the CRB-only orders together, all the CRB+Bestiary, all the CRB+Bestiary+AP, etc. There's no way of knowing from month to month if your order will ship toward the beginning of the window or toward the end.

That's correct.

So...does this mean the preorders are going to get books possibly before August 1st? I'm getting mine through the FLGS but had I known that preorders went out sooner than the listed release date I'd have probably gone that route (for at least one copy of the books, anyway).

They have begun shipping this week but it's a possibility, not a guarantee. Sometimes we get our subs/preorders before street date, sometimes after.

Possibly. But it's also possible for pre-orders to get their books AFTER August 1, since the shipping window is all the way to August 2. Shipping has not yet started, so its more possible to get it closer to or after August 1 with every day that goes by.

Because they haven't finished dealing with all the auths that mistakenly included the last PF1 AP or first PF2 AP when people wanted just one or the other.

Ahhhh, I see. That makes sense.

I've bought every hardcover book available for Pathfinder, by far my favorite game. This money grab for a second addition hasn't excited me like it has others. I will most likely end my collection at 1st edition and migrate over to Dungeons and Dragons. It was fun while it lasted and I'll still play the 1st edition, but I can't see spending another $1000 or so on another edition to rehash so much of the same stuff, just with "simpler" rules. My generation isn't the target audience anymore I guess.

Paizo is a company, not a public service, so their desire to make money is nothing reprehensible. It's not a "money grab" to produce a new edition at this point in the lifetime of the old edition, because that lifetime simply has reached its natural end, considering the way a business works.

Paizo's continued well-being depends on selling new books every month, and 3–4 new rule books every year are a part of that. And Pathfinder first edition simply has reached a point where there really isn't anything left that justifies more and more rule books just so that this edition could go on. If they were to continue to produce books like "Romantic Adventures" or "Ultimate Underwater Basket Weaving" or whatever comes from the bottom of the barrel, I'd rather consider that a "money grab" if anything. And those would probably not sell all that well, either.

Not making new rule books is not an option, because Paizo needs to sell new books, so the only logical conclusion is a new edition. It's not a money grab, it's just how the business of making role-playing games works, if you want to stay in that business.

Aside from that, the new rules are not "simpler", they are different, more streamlined, but they are not losing complexity. Obviously there is not a wealth of thousands of feats and spells and stuff at the start, compared to the 10-year-old first edition, but of course, more rule books will be forthcoming to bring more options to the game, because, again, that is how business works.

I don't know what generation you are, but I am 53 years old, and have played D&D and adjacent games since the days of BECMI D&D and AD&D first edition. I see myself still in the target audience, and I am excited for this new game.

Your choice is your choice.. but you do realize D&D regularly does these supposed "cash grabs" by putting out new editions of D&D right? I mean in a year or so you will be seeing 6th edition from them..

I'm excited about trying the new edition. If I can create a first level magic user in under 45 mins, it will already be better than P1. :D

Well, I am hesitant to spend a lot of money on PF2, too - as long as I don't see the according value in return. But, in Paizo's defense, it is absolutely possible to play first edition without spending any money. Of course, buying the books and accessoires helps, but depending on your budget and will you are free to skip whatever you want, to rely on legal online sources and selfmade material instead.

Looks like they go for the same course at PF2 (at least Archive of Nethys is free to distribute PF2 content) - and they might get me as a PF2 customer that way.

If nothing else buy the PDfs and see if you like the system then go all in if you do! I subscribed to almost everything so I could be assured of GENCON pickup. After that I will be paring down my subs based on what I actually like and need. The Paizo advantage is great and I like getting the PFS/SFS scenarios for free. But that's just me.

Pathfinder Adventure Path, Rulebook Subscriber

Part of me is disappointed that the PDF isn't available for download when it has shipped. But another part of me admits I'd not get much work done for my job if I could download the PDF.

Sadly, I'll not likely be running Pathfinder 2nd edition for quite some time, if at all. My gaming groups are uninterested and we've a lot of material with old APs (and are still in the first books for Hell's Rebels and Reign of Winter). But you know? Outside of the Occult Adventures (and some issues with Mythic Adventures), I've enjoyed their products. I'm buying them as much to support Paizo as to run these games.

Fingers crossed that the end result for PF2 is something I'll be proud to own :)

Pathfinder Adventure, Adventure Path, Rulebook Subscriber

I'm also disappointed that the PDF didn't unlock when the book shipped. Especially because it doesn't say anything about this, in fact, it even claims in the shipping notice and right here on the product page that the PDF is available for download.

If I hadn't searched through the forums for an answer, I would still think that it's a problem with my browser. Poor communication, I have to say.

Anyway, I'm excited about 2E and I can't wait for August 1st.

Your overall point is valid, but there is no chance of WotC putting out D&D 6E in “a year or so”. D&D 5E is still WAY too popular and successful, and there is plenty more in the tank for 5E. New editions get released when the current edition is reaching the end of its life cycle in terms of sales, etc. 5E is still INCREASING in sales and popularity.

D&D 5E will be around for quite some time.

Anyway, back on topic ...

I just ordered / preordered the Core book yesterday. Very interested to see what the final rules look like!
