Pathfinder Playtest Preorder Update

Wednesday, August 1, 2018

When Paizo was planning this year's Pathfinder Playtest, we expected to exceed our own ability to fulfill orders on a timely basis, so we decided to use Fulfillment by Amazon. Unfortunately, Amazon's reports indicate that most customers will not be receiving their orders by tomorrow's release date. They shipped 3 orders on July 28, 3 more on July 29, and no orders on July 30 or 31. Today, they have shipped almost 10% of the outstanding orders, and they are continuing to ship through the night and into tomorrow. They have so far been unable to tell us when they will complete shipping. We will be posting updates as we receive them in this forum thread.

This delay doesn't impact preorders placed with retailers; most of them should have already received their products for release tomorrow. Paizo.com preorders for pickup at Gen Con are also unaffected.

We sincerely apologize for this delay. If your paizo.com Pathfinder Playtest preorder is being fulfilled by Amazon, we will be giving you $15 in paizo.com store credit in the near future.

PDFs of all of the playtest products will be available for free shortly after 6:00 AM Pacific time at paizo.com/pathfinderplaytest.

Any idea on Canadian orders?

So with this giant screw-up by Amazon/Paizo on delivery time AND the fact someone at Paizo thought "no tracking information" would be OK.
How long past the delivery date do we wait before reporting "missing" copies and will they have some to fulfil those lost?

I love Paizo but this sounded like a bad idea to begin with and has proven to be not only bad PR for them but for PF2.
If there was a way to cancel my order I could order all the same books today from Amazon Prime for about the same price and get free shipping and delivery by Monday.
It's very sad.

On the front page of the website, just under the box that contains the playtest download links, you'll see "Pathfinder Playtest Preorder Update." It has been there since this blog was posted, which is the same time that we sent an email to everyone whose preorders are being fulfilled by Amazon.

They did, on August 1st. Have you checked your junk mail folder?

It's also in the main Paizo blog.

I didn't receive this e-mail. I have checked every folder, as I use gmail. I had to find out through a friend about the Amazon delay. Customer service told me to check this thread for updates. As I'm Canadian, I have no idea when I might receive the book even after reading this over.

As I mentioned, the first six orders they shipped were all Canadian, and they've been shipping many every day since Monday. Looking at a couple of the most recent departures, I see a bunch shipping via Purolator (random sample: delivers August 10), and others shipping via FedEx (delivers August 9).

Got mine today. Either their delivery estimates for Ireland are really off, or I feel sorry for some of the Southerners. According to the package, mine was sent by UPS next express by Amazon fulfilment. So hopefully it's a case of their delivery estimates are just overestimating by a mile. That, or I was exceedingly lucky.

Once again Paizo staff shows me the have the best customer service in the industry.

Thank You !

Is there a way that instead of the $15 discount on a future order, I still have yet to receive anything from July, that we could get that money just returned to our cards?

Do we have a decision on whether we will be able cancel orders and get full refunds (as I have requested via email)? I'm not prepared to wait until September and have ordered duplicates via Book Depository given Paizo / Amazon has not been able to fulfil as promised.

I agree. I still have yet to get a notification that my July order has shipped and here we are at the beginning of August,. I am not impressed at all with Paizo this month. AT. ALL.

That would only be fair. I would hope that instead of just sending out a general email to people that Customer Service would take the time to email each person who preordered with updates to THEIR order.

They are now just past 60% shipped.

This is a huge fumble. Huge. We forked over good money in good faith for a product that can be downloaded for free, to have zero tracking info, zero amount of real feedback, and just a disappointing ‘oops’ email.

I ordered the book because I don’t like large PDFs. I like books. I ordered a book. There is no book, at least no this week. I suspect this won’t be sorted until after GenCon.

Major, major disappointment here. I will not make this mistake again, more fool me.

The fault lies with Amazon, not Paizo. I'm not surprised that it happened because Amazon has been messing up their shipments more and more often lately. And it hasn't just been shipments. Their site will show that they have more than enough of an item to ship it and get it to you by their standard delivery dates but then for some reason it is suddenly out of stock a couple of weeks later and you don't get what you ordered for at least a month. Next time maybe instead of ordering via Amazon, try your nearest gaming and hobby store if they are doing preorders.

I ordered from Pazio. They chose to work with Amazon. My LGS is tiny and wasn't going to get any collectors editions of the playtest.

Just like to report, I pre-ordered through Paizo so my order is part of this debacle, and my book just arrived today.

Everyone is acting like the sky is falling over what seems like will amount to a lot of nothing, it's slightly later than expected but earlier than I thought it would be with everything going wrong.

Hopefully I'll get mine by the end of next week.

I received a shipping confirmation email on July 13th from Pazio stating the order would arrive in 7-11 days via Amazon Standard Shipping. On the 31st, after I contacted customer support, I was informed that the shipping company was holding the order back till the 2nd. A friend told me about the Amazon delay as I never received an email about delay

I'm glad that it was only slightly late for you. It would appear that it will be over a week late for some others. Maybe even longer. Having an expected delivery date is important for a limited product like a Collectors Edition (which I ordered).

When I order from Anazon Prime I have no problem getting my stuff. Paizo chose to go with Anazon with no ability for us to check on the order. 8 recieved an email in mid July saying that the order would be sent in such time to get it to me in time for the 2nd. While I appreciate $15 that r eww alot should go back to our cards and not on a future order.

That wasn't an "it's shipping!" email, it was an intent to ship email. According to what a lot of people have reported it actually doesn't say that it's about to ship, but that it'll take 7-11 days (in your case) when it ships. Try re-reading it carefully and see if it doesn't match up with the emails others have reported about.

You received this email when we charged your card, which had to happen before we can deliver Amazon the data regarding orders that were successfully charged. Amazon will then be shipping them with the target of delivering to most customers near the August 2 release date (which is when the PDF will be available).

The Paizo account page is, unfortunately, misleading. Normally, when Paizo marks an order complete, their warehouse has shipped it. In this case, however, Paizo was done with the order July 13th but only because they had transferred the shipment info to Amazon Fulfillment.

I don't know how difficult it would have been to go in and alter the language for this one order whose fulfillment was handled out of house, but it might have avoided a lot of misunderstanding for people checking their order status.

Yeah, I got the same email. What it was intended to convey (I believe) was that they've finalised the order and are about to pass it on to Amazon for delivery.

The belief was that Amazon would then look at where you are, how long it would take to get to you (9 days, I guess) and then ship it to you so that it would arrive on August 2nd (presumably Paizo expected Amazon to ship it to you on July 24th).

Vic was in contact with Amazon daily (near daily?) and it only became clear this week that they weren't actually doing any of that (or only for half a dozen orders, anyhow!) What they actually did was to let all the Paizo orders build up, presumably with a plan to release them to the shipping companies on August 2nd.

Paizo have since been hassling them to get them out the door and hopefully we'll all be getting them "soon".

The above is a kind of cobbled together guess as to what's been going on. However, Vic certainly made a post that when those emails went out on July 13th nothing had actually been shipped. "About to ship..." is not the most precise estimate, after all.

Or, what Joana said. (Faster and simpler than me, as usual!)

Yes, that would indicate that Amazon was "about" to ship it, not that they had done so on the 13th - the intent/ready to ship part. Since Amazon has/had all the books it was automatically marked as shipped in Paizo's system (hence why it shows up like that on your Paizo account). The intent from Paizo was that Amazon would ship the books so they would arrive as close to August 2nd as possible. That's where something went wrong in Amazon's system. We don't know what went wrong on their end yet, though. It couldn't have been that they shouldn't start shipping until the 2nd, as they had already shipped a few books before that.

EDIT:
As the coven of ninjas above have already explained. :-p

As the coven of...

The original quote, and your response, both stated that it wasn't a shipping confirmation email. It was. I, personally, understand what happened. The shipping confirmation email was unclear. It did not explain that Pazio was confirming that the product had been shipped to Amazon, not the customer. The wording was "about to ship from Amazon Canada Warehouse". "From" indicates, it is already at the Amazon Warehouse and being shipped from that location. That doesn't mean a shipping confirmation email did not exist.

Furthermore, of greater concern to me personally, I didn't receive an email regarding the delay and figured Pazio CS might want to know that. This isn't a case of the email being lost in junk or other folders.

Yeah, it was natural to read that email as meaning the book was on its way.

For the record - the email I got advising me of the stuffup with shipping came through on the 2nd August (in Australia - likely 1st August US time)

The warehouse in Canada should already have received the books by then, but that's a technicality.

That, however, is indeed more troubling and a point of reference to investigate by Paizo. If you haven't changed email address since putting down the pre-order, then you should have received it. Even more puzzling since you got the other email in question when Paizo charged your card on the 13th.

Still have not received mine as of 8/4/18. I am going to guess that I won't be getting my package anytime soon. I am not happy with the delay. I preordered the books three months ago and would like to have my books on the promised date. I ordered through Paizo instead of Amazon because this company said that they couldn't promise prompt shipments through Amazon. Well the friends that I know who ordered it through Amazon already got theirs and I still have not received mine yet. I am highly upset with this whole situation.

Now all I get is an email that says "Sorry we screwed up and you are out your money, but here is $15 to make it better."

What a rip off. Paizo should be giving me a discount on my card and not store credit. Now I have to order more crap from them and wait another three months for it to arrive as well.

I think there is some mix up among the comments on this thread between "fault" and "responsibility" as well as "excuse" and "explanation."

Paizo is definitely responsible for this mistake. They have admitted that, owned it, and are trying to make reparations for it. They foresaw a problem with fulfillment, endeavored to head the mistake off before it hit, then were let down by the people they entrusted to head off the problem. Their mistake.

It wasn't their fault in that no one at Paizo did anything wrong—they simply were let down by others. This is one of those situations that occasionally rise in life when you do everything right and still lose. It sucks, but there it is.

Further, Paizo is not making an excuse for what has happened. An excuse gives you a free pass for doing something normally not acceptable. Not showing up for work? Bad. Not showing up for work because you have the flu? Excusable.

What Paizo is giving is an explanation as to what happened and why. It doesn't excuse them from responsibility: this is simply to let us know what is happening and how a company with a reputation for great customer service could make such a gaff.

I get people are upset, but I work for a company that has been let down by the incompetence/mistakes of subcontractors in the past. You essentially have to apologize for someone else's screw up and then swallow a loss to try and make things right. It is a little humiliating and very frustrating. Paizo has my sympathies: I feel your pain.

Many international shipping services have 4 pound maximums or minimums. I am assuming that when Amazon has chosen different services for similar destinations, the reason is usually because they're sending packages under 4 pounds via one method, and packages over 4 pounds via another. I also do not know their finalized shipping weights, but I think it's safe to assume that if you have more than just a rulebook, it's over 4 pounds. If you have just a softcover rulebook, it's probably under. If you have a hardcover or deluxe hardcover, It could go either way, depending on how much their packaging weighs. That said, they are occasionally splitting orders into multiple packages, so your large order may end up being two small shipments.

Worst case scenario I draw the map or use some Dwarvenforge / tiles. I should go looking to see if anyone's prepped out handling combat for 5 pcs instead of 4 for the playtest.

I really hope some deliveries in the US aren't USPS, as they apparently don't have anything scheduled to come to my house for the next 7 days... I know it isn't Paizo's fault but it still makes me sad.
