More Options ! more magic, ... MORE !

5/5

flavorful options, powerful options
classes, archetypes, feats...

while 100% of the boook might not please you, you want this book.

having the choice to build flavorful PC with the right options is priceless (and for this book, you have...)

ultimate magic, rrrrright!!

this book owes its selling rate for the Magus.

lazy feats, some options are good, some others just dotn´
Archetypes: the best Bladebound Magus
worst of all: Trapper Ranger

Spellblights: interesting but too complex for a fumble system
Spellword Casting: at the beginning it looks very nice, then i read it and... is the same spell restriction and opportunities at a expensive cost of time

feats: ok those are feats

Magic spellbooks: why you dont just paraphrase some words concerning about how to protect the spellbooks with some spells and thats all. maybe a feat or two for scaling this option, besides the spellbooks looks greats.

spells: again, the magus options are great.

my advice for you: buy the book, cut the pages concerned for magus, and dump the rest or Download the pdf at any place you can, print the magus and drop the rest

2/5

While I do not think that either this or Ultimate Combat deserve to be called "Ultimate" anything books (maybe Ultimate Monk), I do think that Ultimate Magic does better cover it's proported theme. In my opinion, Inner Sea Magic did a better job overall, but is sadly setting specific.

On th Divine Side (minus Paladin) this book is extremely, extremely limited. There are a few gems, but most are either placed really far out of reach, or just not worth what you give up for them, and might as well not have been there at all rather than tease.

On the Arcane side, this book is full of material, but severely lacking as well. There is an assortment of random material that just seems like it was left over from other books and tossed in here. The only magical items in this book (exceptionally noticable on the Divine Magic side) are Wizard's Spellbooks, (which of the top of my head, only 3 Classes in the entire game will actually have any use for beyond the sell price).

There are a lot of (would be) nice Feats, except they are specific to a Class, or build, or whose names imply it would be great for somone else besides who it is actually intended. Over all, there are a lot of options, but actually very slim pickings. Overall, it leaves a lot of classes and build out in the cold.

Whereas Ultimate Combat is at best Ultimate Monk, Ultimate Magic is closest to being more appropriate as Ultimate Wizard/Inquisitor, (arguably Classes that did not need more).

mediocre at best

3/5

This book is no Complete Divine or Complete Arcance. I mostl play a cleric and this book does little for me personally.

Yeah, its got some interesting tweaks, but for the price, i dobn't think thy are worth it.

So far I've used 1 feat and the spells from this book. Nothing else. Should've bought the APG.

A good product to add to your collection!

5/5

After reading through Ultimate Magic, some new mechanics offered in this book can add flavor and fun to an adventure.

The Magus appears to be a class that is fun to play as. You are able to swipe at your enemies with your sword in one hand and with magic in the other.

Spellblights are interesting. These curses can hinder the spellcasters in different ways.

One chapter that I especially liked was the words of power. The concept was a little hard to wrap around but when you understand it fun ensues. I tried out a couple of words of power in an adventure and it was pretty fun. There was a point where I fought a spellcaster who also had words of power and it felt like the two were having a very destructive debate ha!

Overall I enjoyed this product and I recommend this to everybody!

Thanks Decorus, do you mind telling me which other ones are for the magus. Or in your opinion how many good spells does the Magus have overall (low lvl, mid lvl, high?)

What is this amazing magical force that populates every wizard's spell book across every continent and every dimension with a new cantrip automatically just because Tim the Enchanter developed a custom cantrip to wash the party's laundry?

Ultimate Magic, pg. 121 wrote:
"A standard spellbook includes all cantrips from the Core Rulebook except those in the wizard’s oppositional schools. Books containing cantrips from additional sources are noted in the content description."

My impression of the RAI was that by the time wizards hit first level, they automatically got all the standard cantrips (detailed in the PF Core Book) from their apprenticeship/training. The standard cantrips are like the building blocks of stronger spells. For example, a basic 1st level carpenter is no master craftsman, but he/she should probably be trained in all the basic woodworking skills with common local wood varieties: sawing, sanding, basic joinery, fasteners, woodstaining/varnishing, etc.

New basic knowledge/techniques, like maybe simple inlays, simple scrollwork, and the basics of working with exotic woods (teak, lignum vitae, etc.), probably wouldn't be standard training. But, they are simple enough to learn once the carpenter is exposed to them and practices enough. Similarly, non-standard cantrips are easy to learn once a wizard knows they exist and then does the research.

The black raven wrote:

Ergo, the way I read it, all cantrips from additional sources would not be known by any and all level 1 wizards. They would have to find them and add them to their spellbook, same as any other spell.

To be consistent with Ultimate Magic, the CRB should be given an errata in the Spellbook part of the Wizard class (page 79), such as "A wizard begins play with a spellbook containing all 0-level wizard spells in this book (except those from his prohibited schools, if any; see Arcane Schools) plus three 1st-level spells of his choice."

The Soundstriker bard archtype seems really interesting, but I am not entirely sure how it works.

Does anyone know the save DC for Weird Words and if you can have multiple sounds targetting the same creature?

For the Bard I like the Animal speaker and Song healer archtypes best and even better they stack with each other.

Cut for space and will be coming out in Ultimate Combat, maybe? At least, I hope that is what happened so that we can eventually see these spells.

Am I the only one who finds the "every cantrip" logic absurd in the first place?

What is this amazing magical force that populates every wizard's spell book across every continent and every dimension with a new cantrip automatically just because Tim the Enchanter developed a custom cantrip to wash the party's laundry?

The idea behind the cantrips being in every wizards spell book is that they are so common that they get to be part of the Wizards book BECAUSE they are SO common. It is not magically put in place across continents and the like. If a "new" cantrip comes in to place then it should NOT be part of a wizards spell book because it is not that common yet. Once it does then yes it should get put in. This is one of the advantages to being a wizard over a sorcerer. So as you implied this is simply not the case. They are just handed down from generation to generation and from wizard to wizard across continents and the even the planes of existence. They have been around so long they are common and have easy access to them.

Can anyone tell me what kinds of goodies the bladebound magus archetype gets, and if there are any new feats that mesh with the magus well?

That can be tricky to work out even as the designers, at least for freelancers. I know what I wrote, but I don't have the book yet so I can't say for certain what made it in. And even when I do get the book, development can change/rename/combine freelancer contributions until we aren't sure what to take credit for.

Does stuff that freelancers write that don't make it in generally show up in other work they make?

Usually we're told that if it got cut once, it's probably not good enough for a second chance :) Occasionally I've seen outlines that included bits that got cut from other products.

Edit: I should add that submitting it to anyone else isn't an option. Paizo buys all the words I write for them lock stock and barrel, whether or not it makes it into the book :)

Sometimes! Sometimes Paizo will let us post those things up here, and sometimes they suggest that we not do so (in quiet, menacing tones of voice, sometimes accompanied with a few quick strikes from an iron bar to our typing fingers). These spells might have been cut for flavor, for balance, for space, or for any number of reasons.

Sadness! I was hoping options cut for reasons of space could be put elsewhere, so I could see what awesomeness was cooked up but not left in.

Oh well, back to scouring the 3rd Party Compatible page...

To be brief on it, the black blade can only be a certain type of weapon (One-handed slashing, a rapier or a sword cane; I think the restrictions on what types of blades can be used is friggin' silly, what if I want a short sword as a black blade?!). Bladebound magi get less pool points because their weapon gets some too, and the weapon gets a couple cool, but not really worthwhile abilities.

It's a fluff archetype, really.

Meanwhile, over at Amazon.com, Ultimate Magic hits number 269 in bestseller rank of books. Out of all Amazon books. Yeah, it's up there among top dogs such as carb diet guides and memoirs of former US presidents or almost-vice-presidents. Best I've ever seen with Core Rulebook was something around number 900.

That's in case if anybody was wondering how caster splatbooks sell.

Its impressive, no doubt. As a side note, the PF RPG core rules book is #2 in the fantasy gaming category behind Ultimate Magic.

I think it is actually a prety good take on Elric of Melnibone. The Black Blade is a Stormbringer/Mournblade type of weapon that grows in power with the Magus.

It's flavorful and captures an iconic Sword & Sorcery character very well. Works for me :)

RE: VedounMar's review.

Ensemble feat gets called out as poor design. The reviewer seems to have missed that Aid Another in combat is a standard action, while the Ensemble feat allows AA as an immediate action, therefore giving a net bonus in action economy.

I think you only get the free PDF if you are a subscriber to the RPG line. If you'd merely pre-ordered it, then you'd just get the book with a 15% off the book price, because of the Pathfinder Advantage.

...it's always possible that if you write a nice letter to Customer Service saying that you didn't realise that, they may retrospectively alter your pre-order to an RPG line subscription and give access to the PDF too. I'm sure a staffer will comment about this last paragraph though!

Feats

Extra Arcana
Extra Arcane Pool

The Black Blade has its own arcane pool that it can spend.
It can turn all its damage into different elements or even force.
It can give its user SR.
Lots of neat tricks....

The Magus spells are tricky it depends on what you consider good.

It does get spells that turn it into Monsterous Humanoids or Undead with all the abilities:) I believe in the end it can go up to huge size or tiny as either....

Um... after UC, there's the Pathfinder RPG Basic Box (?) due out in the Autumn, but have no idea what's due to be released after that. I'm sure they'll hint or explicitly say at Paizocon and/or Gencon.

BTW, the Basic Box is heavy so if you live outside the USA you might want to cancel after getting the UC!

WHY would I want the basic set if I have the full blown rules? See that's the big loss in something like a subscription, any money you save will be blown on something worthless to you comming down the pipeline and forced down your throat.

I understand why the company would make a basic set, but I don't see that appealing to the majority of pathfinder players who are playing the main game. So having a subscription and getting that would be a penalty.

ALL of their subscriptions are currently month to month. You are free to unsubscribe from any of their lines at any time you want. If there is something coming down the pike you don't want, post in customer service to cancel the subscription when its the next product in line. That's all.

There's no "penalty" to subscribing. There's actually a benefit, the early PDF. However, just like anything you've put down you want to keep getting until you say stop...you have keep an eye on the line so that you CAN tell them to stop. Paizo makes it extremely easy to manage your subscriptions via email, phone or message board post.

As has been pointed out before in this thread, you can cancel your subscription after Ultimate Combat comes out so you can skip the Beginner's Box, then reactivate it after the Beginner's Box has been released. All you have to do is notify customer service that you'd like to do this, either by messageboard post, email, or phone.
(Ninja'ed, I see...but worth repeating!)

Seems like a pretty cheap thing to do and against the purpose and intent of subscribing.

I would guess that Paizo has probably figured out that the Beginner's Box isn't a pressing need for everyone. I doubt they expect 100% of the people that are subscribed for, say, Ultimate Magic to carry their subscriptions over for the BB.

I'll point out that there are many subscribers like myself who are pleased that it is part of the subscription.

Plus, Paizo's "subscription" is really an at-will thing. If you are really adamant that you do not want a product, you can unsubscribe for that month - it's not like a magazine where you pre-pay for a year.

Um... after UC, there's the Pathfinder RPG Basic Box (?) due out in the Autumn, but have no idea what's due to be released after that. I'm sure they'll hint or explicitly say at Paizocon and/or Gencon.

BTW, the Basic Box is heavy so if you live outside the USA you might want to cancel after getting the UC!

I think Bestiary 3 will be announced at PaizoCon next month, on schedule for a December release... IIRC, it was the exact same pattern last year for Bestiary 2.

Originally Bestiary II was suppose to be out in October I thought....or maybe that was the first Bestiary that got pushed back so far. I know the first one was suppose to be out In September when I was at Gencon 09' thinking that isn't that far away...then it got pushed back as well.

Trying to stay on schedule can be a pain sometimes, while announcing more awesome sauce to be released!

Include me in that list. Heck, two of my favourite games I ran were for kids, so discounted Boxed sets (and PDF for me) are a good thing.

Spoiler:

I ran Sunken Citidel for a bunch of 10-12 year olds for a birthday party. It was a blast because I had one aunt helping to 'advise' her niece, and the other parents were rolling for the rats, making little rodent noises, one played Meepo etc. I think we all had fun.

Spoiler:
I ran Hollows last hope for FCBD a few years ago. The parents were amazed that I held the attention of 5 kids for 6 hours. They all got to keep 'their' mini, and the best player got to keep her dice. The shop was happy, they got at least one sale out of it.

So, tomorrow (Wed, May 18) is the street release date.

How does that translate into when I will see the book in places like retail book stores etc?

I have the book preordered at Barnes and Noble.com but it says the book is scheduled to ship June 6th!!!!

In theory, stores are good to go with selling the book from 18th.

However, B&N take Paizo books not from Paizo directly, but from Diamond/Alliance. And the date when they actually start to hand them out ... tends to vary, especially with big chains for whom this is book number 457302389, as opposed to LGS where it's a Big Thing.

I wish I'd known that before ordering my copy of Faiths of Purity from them. Now I'm getting one "just one more minor delay!" after another from them about it.

But thanks for the advice, and I'm still looking forward to getting my very own print copy of UM.

So the PDF is available at 2AM... Is that 2AM Eastern or Pacific?

I'm on the East coast, and over here it says 3, so I assume it's already calibrated to your location.
