Raelle blushed. "I was so gonna be calm and laid back and not do this. I may have understated the facts when I told you I was kind of a math nerd," she said with a self-deprecating grin. "I may on occasion get a little bit nuts when things aren't just so."

She picked up a scoop. "These are for shaping the dough into cookies. Umm....it has to be these ones and filled exactly or they don't cook exactly perfect...." She put her hand over her eyes. "I'm just making it worse aren't I?"

Ignace patted her on the arm as she rolled her eyes. "It's okay, sis. He hasn't run away yet. I think he probably already knows you're a little high strung."

Raelle is making funny faces as she tries so hard not to freak out as Chara picks the eggshells out of the batter. "It's fine," she said through clenched teeth, attempting to smile. "Everyone has to start somewhere."

"We have to let her 'fix' it before we actually bake the cookies, or her brain might implode," Ignace said, rolling her eyes as she stepped aside to let Raelle have access to the bowl.

Ardiente sighs dramatically "I'm so misunderstood." He says, barely containing a grin.

He stands a bit out of the way while the girls get everything set up, though he will offer to help if any of them appear to need an assist.

The girls clearly know what they're doing and the counter is covered with ingredients and tools in no time flat. Raelle gets the oven heating, while Ignace starts the instructions.

"Alright, to start we need two cups of flour," she said bossily. "Chara, show him which measuring cup to use."

He turns to Ignace "Alright, what do we do first? Be easy on me, as this is my first time." He says with a small smile.

Ignace sighed and rolled her eyes. "Your boyfriend is so weird, Raelle," she complained.

Ignace's tears finally stopped around the same time as Chara's story finished. Raelle sent Ignace to the bathroom to clean up and headed to the kitchen.

"Hey, you two. Sounds like you're having a good time in here. Since Mom is still sleeping, how about we make a batch of feel-better cookies? Chara, you should go and tell Ignace that's what we're doing."
As soon as Chara ran off, excited about cookies, Raelle hugged Ardiente. "Thanks for being here. I don't think I could have handled both of them by myself."

He hugs her back "You're quite welcome, though to be honest, there's few other places I would rather be than with you and your family."

He lets that sink in for a few moments, then says "So, baking cookies. I don't think I've ever taken part in such an activity."

"You've never made cookies?!" Chara demands, shocked, as she returns to the kitchen with Ignace in tow. "Well, you need to learn then."

Ignace sighs and opens a drawer. She starts pulling out aprons. "You're going to need to wear one of these. It gets quite messy," she said, pointedly staring at Chara, who promptly stuck her tongue out at Ignace.

"Hmm. Well, it looks pretty. You're really talented. But you don't have to just work all the time." She paused as Ignace glared at her. "I'm not suggesting you have to stop," she said, putting up her hands to ward off the angry tirade that was threatening. "But maybe you might like me to ask one of your friends to come and spend time with you? I know there's a lot going on, but it's easier with friends. That's all I'm saying."

"How can you be so calm?" Igance snapped. "You almost....you almost..."

A series of expressions passed across Sorchan's face. Rage, sorrow, fear. But only for a moment. "Thank you once again for your help," he said.
"I'll let James know," she said, from where she was seated on the couch, with her arm around Chara. "That information might help them narrow the search area further."
"it was the least I could do. With our homes gone we must band together and aid each other in any way we can instead of squandering what resources we have in petty squabbles, besides, it was the right thing to do... Unfortunately I believe I am at the limit of what my creativity and power can help with here..." He seems somewhat lost but seems to be trying to draw strength from political pseudo philosophy.

"I will not forget this," Sorchan said, trying to convey gratitude, but practically bouncing off the walls with fear and worry.

"Wait, before you go," the young blond girl spoke up. "Umm....when my teacher asked me to come here I left Phaedra alone with Lang. They're probably fighting. She always fights with everyone," Ignace added with a sigh. "Could you check on her? I mean, not that you have to or anything."

Reminder in case the relationships have slipped your mind that Phaedra is Lucas and Lily's younger sister.

"Gareth accidentally blew himself up. Chara, Vis, and Grim went to go check on him, Mrs. Blackscales," Ignace replied quickly, looking nervous as she saw the expression on her teacher's face.

"I'm sorry too," she said quietly. "I may have overreacted. A little."

But in some regions they refer to lunch as dinner and in some regions they refer to supper as dinner. I don't know why. It's very confusing. We....moved around a lot after my powers manifested...for obvious reasons. So I've heard quite a few variations. But I always think of the evening meal as dinner since that was what I learned first."

It wasn't the first time she'd noticed Grim not quite getting it when it came to times of day. She wasn't sure they had days where he was from.

Lets go have some fun this afternoon. and looking to Phaedra It's ok to smile, I know a lot more than you think about firebirds. and you just may find that some of us non-firebirds can be good friends.

Phaedra made a face like someone who had just bitten into a lemon. "I do not require your pity," she said stiffly.

Ignace rolled her eyes. "Phaedra is having some trouble adjusting to life on the surface. It's easier for Chara and I because we never lived on the sun among the other firebirds. You can't miss what you never had. Her family were strict segregationists and she is still learning how to accept others as equals," she said sweetly but with a pointed glare at Phaedra.

He offers a hand to Chara, even offering to let her ride on Lang's shoulders if she wants.

Chara gladly climbs up on to his shoulders, turning to stick her tongue out at Phaedra.

"I hear that your ceremony went smoothly. I am glad. It is....for the best that I did not attend." Her posture was still a bit stiff and her speech formal, but she didn't seem to object to Lang's presence.

Lang tries to be polite as possible and welcoming. He looks toward Ignace's new friend a bit hoping for an introduction.

Ignace hesitates. She had been very upset with Lang, but she wasn't sure that she was upset enough to inflict Phaedra on him. On the other hand, Chara was giving her the puppy dog eyes. Her little sister hated conflict.

FWOOOOOOOOM!

The corridor became an inferno for several seconds as Ignace lost control of her powers.

Reflex save for everyone in the corridor to see if you were able to get out of the direct blast before it went off.

One, two, buckle my shoe. Three, four, shut the door. Don't listen, don't listen, don't listen....don't think about it....five, six, pick up sticks...

The confrontation between the would be bullies and the girls and their would be protector was suddenly interrupted by a hallway full of bats. Ignace screamed, completely losing her concentration.

Image

Ignace curled up into a ball on the floor, running nursery rhymes through her head over and over. If she didn't focus on the here and now then maybe she could stop it. The air around her was getting hotter.

Image

Ignace glanced nervously at the group of boys clustered along the hallway outside the cafeteria as Phaedra chattered on about dresses. Normally she'd be happy to talk about clothes. It was her favorite subject. But having to pass such a crowd of people made her nervous. And there was something that seemed off....

Just as they moved past the group, she gasped in surprise as she was hit squarely in the face with some sort of fruit paste. Phaedra shreaked indignantly as she was also covered in sticky thrown food.

Image

Ignace watched the clock. It seemed to be moving very, very slowly.

"I can't believe we actually have to take classes with non-firebirds....it just isn't right. Do they not understand the importance of keeping ourselves separate? We're special...surely they must see that." Phaedra had kept up a steady stream of this sort of chatter since they got there. It was annoying. Ignace had barely picked at her lunch. Being around Phaedra was stressful. But she couldn't seem to make her go away. "I just feel so comfortable around you...I'm so glad that there's someone I can really talk to here....I was worried that wouldn't be the case," Phaedra continued while Ignace ground her teeth.

Image

Ignace sighed and winced as the new girl gripped her arm tightly as they waited in the lunch line.

"If you would prefer we can take our lunches to the sewing room to eat," she sai begrudgingly. She had meant to go and eat alone, but this new girl was impossible to get rid of.

"Hai!" Midori says excitedly, folding the yukata gently and apparently oblivious to Ignace's awkwardness.

"You have fun too Ignace-chan. I should be going or I'm going to be late. Lang-kun said we should be back tomorrow I think." Midori thought briefly about giving Ignace a hug, but she wasn't sure it would be proper, and anyway Ignace-chan probably didn't want to be hugged. Instead Midori settles for a smile and a bow. "Goodbye!" she says, on the way out towards her own room.

"Goodbye," Ignace said, glad that Midori seemed to be in a good mood, glad that she was getting some space from Lang, but also a little jealous that the others were going on the trip without her. But she knew it was for the best. She wasn't ready to be around that many people away from school. They could get hurt.

"Hai, it definitely makes things very confusing." Midori agrees, nodding along with Ignace-chan as she says her peace about romance in general. "Maybe someday though, we'll want to giggle and talk about boys. I don't understand why though." She says, trying to be honest with herself for a moment, but failing completely - she didn't think she would giggle over boys.

"I hope so. Zilla-chan didn't even give me a chance to explain. It hurts a little that she's so ready to think that someone is going to hurt her.. but I understand that Hew-kun and her have had a very difficult life together." Midori says soberly, trying to push the thoughts of romance out of her mind - especially since it wasn't helping at all. Her heart was still beating more quickly than normal.

"I think that Zilla wanted you to like Hew because that would be a way of making sure you wouldn't leave or disappear or anything...like you rejecting him was also rejecting her. I think. I don't know. I'm not an expert. I just think that deep down it was never about liking someone or romance at all....just basic insecurity. That's something I can understand very well. Plus...something she said....I think it bothers Zilla when other girls get fussed over and she doesn't. I think that maybe she is old enough to think that giggling over boys is fun and maybe it's hard sometimes hanging around with us younger girls who still think it's icky. Does that make sense?"

Hew-kun likes me... and... well." the ninja stumbles a little over her words, trying to think of how to explain it properly. "I... I don't feel the same way, but I think Zilla-chan wanted me too... and she saw me and Lang after we had been wretsling in the mud and... she got some strange ideas I think. She thinks I betrayed Hew-kun. I... I already talked with Hew-kun and told him... is Zilla-chan really that upset with me?" she finishes just a little despondantly.

Ignace sighed. "And this is why I think romance is stupid. We are way too young to be worrying about this stuff now. There will be plenty of time when we're older and stupider like my sister and her friends. All of the giggling and the talking about boys," she said, rolling her eyes.

"It's okay, Midori. Zilla is really upset, but give her some time to calm down. If Hew explains things to her, I'm sure she'll come around once she knows that she misunderstood."

That didn't stop her heart from beating quickly and the rose colour refusing to leave her cheeks. Especially when Ignace asked to see what she had made.

"Hai!" she says eagerly, trying hard to contain her excitement, as she turns back to the vestibule to extract the yukata for Sara and for Chara that they had made. She lays them delicately in front of Ignace and awaits her professional judgement of the pieces eagerly.

"Hmmm...." Ignace looked over both garments carefully.

"It's good! Downright amazing for a beginner, though I suspect from looking at these that Cariban knows how to sew pretty well," she said, smiling. "Chara is going to be so happy with this duck pattern."

She paused. "Ummm....I don't mean to pry, but are....are you and Zilla having a fight or something? She didn't really want to talk about it, but she was really upset. It's okay to tell me if it isn't any of my business."

The girl herself backs out and turns to face Ignace, a rueful smile on her face.... and just a hint of rose-colour on her golden cheeks. She glances at the yukata she is holding. "Ah... thank you Ignace-chan."

It's just the adrenaline... just ignore how your heart keeps beating quickly. That's what Blackscales-sensei meant - just ignore it. Midori takes the offered yukata and smiles and bows slightly out of politeness. "Thank you." she says happily. "I... I will tell Lang-kun. He... he thinks that he ruined everything, and I think I helped to cheer him up."

After a slight awkward pause, Midori suddenly seems to remember something and eagerly blurts out: "Have you seen the yukata that Cariban-san made with my help?"

Ignace grimaced a little when Midori mentioned what Lang thought. It wasn't too far off the truth.

"He broke my trust. That hurts. It's going to take time to get past that...it doesn't mean I hate him."

Ignace gladly grabbed onto the change of subject. "No, I didn't even know Cariban could sew! Sara never mentioned it even though we were just making a yukata for Cariban...I'm sad that we never got to have our tea party after all. Next weekend, I guess. But first let me see what you guys made."

Sara doesn't have the best grasp on things, but she tries to help reassure Ignace about her abilities.

"I appreciate the sentiment. But those are small fires. There is no amount of cold that makes people happy about being next to a volcano....well, maybe some firebirds, but not everybody else. But you're right about my needing to learn how to control it."

"It isn't so big. Anyone can use magic to talk to animals easy. I wish I could sew like you do. You can't do that with magic." :)

She shuffles through her material component bag, wondering why the older Cariban told her to get the things it did. Candle stubs and acorn shells were silly things to keep in a bag, especially when you use them to make magic happen.

"I like making things. Especially things that make people happy. Fire doesn't make very many people happy."

"I think I understand what you're talking about. As much as I think I need to, at least."

She pours a small gulp of seeds into her mouth and chews them up.
"If you want, if we can find some bees, I can ask them for fresh honey and wax from them. I can tell them not to sting us too. We had bees at home."

"That sounds fantastic, Sara. I really admire your ability to talk to animals. It's so useful," she said a little wistfully.

"No. I didn't see her. Maybe she's talking to someone. She likes to talk."

She looks over the nearly finished work on the tiny dress for Cariban.
"How do you eat wax? I bit one of the candles at home when I was littler and it tasted really bad."

"Well, that's because you're not a firebird. I'd feel the same about your food. I can't eat water-based foods unless they're treated in some way like being burnt or being mixed with something that makes it okay. It would make me really sick otherwise. And my food is mostly just yucky to you, but some of it could be poisonous. Firebirds like oils and waxes and anything burnt. It's because my metabolism works so much differently than yours."

"Personally, beeswax is my favorite dessert and if I had taken a bite of a candle, I'd think it was the yummiest thing I'd ever tasted."

Sara has left the cafeteria and is arriving back in the sewing room.

"Hi Ignace. I got your lunch pack thingy."
Sara has a small tray with fruits, grilled vegetables and nuts with a chunk of cake on the side.

"Thank you, Sara," Ignace said smiling as she pulled out a charred cheese sandwich and a small packet of charcoal briquets. "Ooh...they even included a wax cup for dessert," she said happily.

"I don't suppose you saw Zilla at all? She's been gone a long time. Maybe something distracted her? Maybe I should go look for her after lunch."
